GG< declared in the beginning, and after the flood )y his acts, that there was no necessity for a man to have a plurality of wives, and I am sure there never will be a time when it wil cease to bo the legitimate fruit of tho lust of the flesL Polygamy is not of God, but of man—an institution of man. It originated in the mind of Lameeb, a murderer and the descendant of Cain, a murderer, and one of the most corrupt men, and of one among the most corrupt fam ilies that ever lived on the earth. We arc taught by the pen of inspiration that if the fountain b corrupt the streapi will be ccrrapt also. God esteemed Polygamy as such when ho destroyed the polygambts by the waters of the flood, not leaving one to represent Lamech and hb pernicious institution. The Church cannot receive an individual into her fellowiihip while he b yielding obedience to an institution of man, which G ^ has con- demned. Is it not ais scriptural, and as great a display of common sense to reeeiTe an Idol ator into the Church, and kiffer him to retain h b idols and idol worship, as it b to receive polygambt into the Church and suffer him to retain hb wives^ The idolater has set aside the law of God that teatiies him to worship the OH4 true and living God—the polygambt has set aside the law of God that teat^eshim to have but one tei/e at the s ^ e time. Why, then, receive the polygambt and rejeet the idolater ? If the Church in Central Africa should receive a polygamist and suffer him to retun all h b wires, to be consistent she must receive the worshipper of idols and suffer him to retein h b idols, and idolworship. It cannot be otherwise when polygamy b adopted and practiced. Polygamy leads to the degradation of the female sex. and the neglect of children. Where this institution b adopted the females are re- garded as mere serrants, and are treated as such. Thb conflicts with the word of God in reference to the duties of the husband to his wife, and the duties of parents to train their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. It b urged that polygamy does not conflict with the will of God, because many of the ^ d and great men of old had many wiresi and when the Spirit of God records the hbtory of these men, he utters not a word of oondem nation against them for their acts. If thb proof that polygamy b right, then according to the same proocss of reasoning, incest an< drunkenness are right After Lot fled from tho ruins of Sodom, and took up hb abode in the mountains, with hb two daughters, he be- came drunk and committed incest, and when the pen of inspiration gives the hbtory of Lat and hb acts, it doai not condemn him for these crimes. Peter epeaks of Lot in the highest terms, calling him a righteous man, (2 Pet iL 7.) without any condemnation of him for his drunkenness a ^ incest In the hbtory of Judah, one of the sons oi' Jacob, we team, committed incest with Tamar^ lis daughter-in-law, (Gen. xxxviii) but the Spirit of God in recording thb h i ^ i y says nothing in condemnation of Jndah's acts. ited, butby application after becoming aminister he

iSecame one of our best infomed ministers. For

good sound thought, deep toned piety, logical argu-

ment aad arrangement, he had few superiors among

the preaching brotherhood.

It waa m y privilege for the last nine years to be

fre<iuently associated with him in protracted meet-

inga, and otiier religlona exerciaea, and I must aay

that he was one of the purest and hdicat men that

it baa been m y good fortune to meet with. I visited

him twice during his last day a and had considerable

talk with him in reference to hia views and feeUngs

little longer be thought he could be more useftal,

that he had matured some sul^jecta which he had

not to well understood.
