1introductionIT and the interface between architectural designand decision in the early planning stages

    Main topic:

IT and the impact on the architectural design and the decisions to bemade in the early planning stages.

    Background:

A primary idea emerges in an architects head and materialize, mostlyin collaboration with a design team, into a drawing illustrating the

fundamental project concept. Within this process crucial decisions mustbe made. Beginning with the architects decision which solution areworth being put to the paper, to the crucial client decision, whichpresented concept should be further developed.

The paper and the explorative discussion is based on the review of twoessential books, which throw light on different aspects of the topic.

    Objectives:

discuss the paper topic in the light of the literature review

contribute with an overview of the most crucial IT impacts on thearchitectural design and decision process.

establish a knowledge foundation for further discussion and research.

4IT tools in the solution generating role

The drawing as design medium allows a reflective conversation. Thisconversation is also based on the designers conscious or

unconscious knowledge reservoir. Can the computer replace the

drawing as conversation partner? Can the computer handle tacit

    knowledge?

VR as an experimental medium can possibly, in conversation withthe designer, contribute to innovative architecture and creativity.

The ability of the computer to handle enormous amounts of

parameters in much shorter time as the human being, combining them

to alternative solutions, can perhaps support design generating. But

still the parameters must be identified by the designer.

The design problem is difficult to reveal, multidimensional and

comprised of the interaction between requirements and there is an

interdependence between problem and solution finding. Can the

computer lead to a disruption in the problem-solution-relationship?

A primary idea emerges in an architects head.

    5communication and information transfer

and materialize, mostly in collaboration with a design team, into a drawing illustrating the fundamental project concept

The network era has compressed the communication process, made

information easily accessible and collaboration possible between

    geographically dispersed participants.

Development from focus on the individual to the idea of

collaboration. New dimension in the idea finding processtheinteraction between the individual and the group. Who is now the

    generator of the primary idea?

The bits of the building projects are melting to a compact

conglomerate. The boarders between the traditional stages and roles

in the planning process change and blur. Roles, responsibilities andworking processes have to be redefined.

What do this mean to the architect?

Is the future design process not

    dominated by the architect anymore?

    6decision-making

IT great potential as solution evaluative tool (e.g. the 3D product

model), helping to reduce uncertainty and recognize errors early in the

    process.

The problem of information overload. Is there any limit of how much

information the decision maker can handle without loosing the

overview and focus for the real important issues?

The iterative process between problem and solution finding, requires

enough time for reflection and mature. Also to see the consequences

of a decision. The trap of over-precision and the temptation to use ITas tool to accelerate the process can have negative effects on it.

Where is the limit of time compression in the design and decision

    process?

Within this process crucial decisions must be made. Beginningwith the architect who decides which thought is worth being putto the paper, to the crucial client decision, which presented

    concept should be further developed.

    7decision-making

Design has both qualitative and quantitative aspects. Qualitative

aspects are difficult to define and measure. Can the analytic and

quantitative nature of the computer disturb the balance between the

qualitative and quantitative, subjective and objective, and thus lead to

a bias in the decision process?

Conflict between the established experiences and the will to

innovation. If IT tools are founded on tested experiences, routines andstorage of information, -an obstacle to innovation?

Is there any future solution to reduce risk, still allowing creativity and

innovative solutions? Can the potential of IT contribute to this?

Design in general can be seen to pass through phases ofrelative certainty and doubt.
