A special thanks to Norm and the social committee as the Memorial Day Dinner was quite the success with plenty of good food and good conversation. We sure do have some excellent cooks in the club with so many delicious items it was hard to choose and not try everything. Eric Sundberg has truly become the master of that big grill with everything cooked to perfection.

With the 6th snowiest winter on record and so far above normal rainfall the water has come up nicely and is returning to the slips. It has allowed a few members to put their boats in the water and youth sailing lessons to return to the club. If we can just get a couple more good rains in the watershed I think we will be in business for a major-ity of the club members for the best part of the summer.

The 4th of July dinner is shaping up to be a good one so mark your calendars and come out to the lake and enjoy our beautiful facilities. For those suffering from sailing withdrawal give me a call and we can try to arrange a nice afternoon or evening sail. Cheney has a wonder-ful amount of lake area and there is something special about being able to sail for one hour on the same tack and still have lake left. And no my boat is not slow : )

Hope to see you on the water soon.

The Statement of Financial Position for the month ending May 31, 2013 was discussed, minor changes made, accepted and approved by the board. (Cheatum/Faber) Property Manager’s Report: Patrick Adams

• Our contract mowing crew mowed the grounds prior to the Memorial Day celebration. We also mowed all the open and contract yard spaces. Workers removed three to four pick-up loads of junk and trash from the yard. The crane wall project is now complete.

• Work crews are installing new sleeves, end caps, and pins on C dock. The board discussed and approved to continue C dock repairs. We are securing and replacing damaged flotation on A dock.

• We were able to salvage and rejuvenate several existing mooring balls and will replace three.

• The drought and recent wind damaged several big trees on NSA grounds. Patrick recommends that we cut down and haul away the damaged and dead debris before limbs fall causing damage.

• Patrick received a 1:30 A.M. call from NSA’s fire security system alerting him of an active alarm at the Afterdeck. Upon investigation, there was no fire. Patrick diagnosed the problem being a bug crawling between the alarm sensors.

NSA opened the Afterdeck to host the Kansas Geological Survey members on Thursday, June 6.administrative secretary Report: Allen Johnson reviewed the list of individuals that have not renewed their slips and/or membership.

The Shelter house rejuvenation is complete.

harbormaster: Doug VeithThanks to the recent rain Cheney lake is on the rise. Most

of A dock and some slips on B dock can be used for shallow draft boats. We had a few boats commissioned and sailed over the weekend and the crews came back wearing smiles that only being on the water can give you. If you are on C, D or E slip and have a shallow draft boat you might consider giving the slip holders on A and B dock to get permission to use their slip. If you have a bigger boat and can’t get in yet, come on out and catch a ride with someone on a smaller boat.

• The crane is back in use.• If you gave up your slip or mooring and would like to

re-up, check with Allen Johnson. We have some good slips available.

• Now that the water is up we are able to do more work on C dock and replace foam that was dislodged from the low water. We are hopeful that all that work can be done soon. Happy days, come out, enjoy and sail.

operations officer: Norman DodsonThe Memorial Day Dinner went well.  We had approxi-

mately 83 members and guests.  We spent approximately $285.00 and took in $278.00 so overall we came out very well.  Some of the expenses for things such as condiments, tea, lem-onade, and some paper goods will be used for other events.  Details are being finalized for the Summer Sailstice.  As you know, we have moved it from Saturday to Sunday afternoon to accommodate the pastor’s schedule.  We’re planning on do-ing a late lunch at 1:30 P.M. followed by the Dedication to the members that have passed and the blessing of the fleet.  This event has been registered with the Summer Sailstice Event and I will be sending out a reminder to everyone to register on the website to be eligible for the drawings.

• Members interested in reserving the Shelter House, Afterdeck, or holding a special group activity should contact Jack Kramer at [email protected]

Vice commodore: Gary Cheatum• Due to low water no races are planned.• At this time we are waiting to see if we will have enough

water and participation to hold the Annual COLOSSUS CUP Regatta on July 4th.

•Gary Shepard is working on getting a fleet of San Juan’s to race in the Whitecap.

• NSA will be hosting youth sailing camps at Cheney this year. They will NOT be at Lake Afton as was previously announced (See Junior Sailing flyer and info elsewhere in this issue of the Mainsheet).

We have a beautiful Afterdeck that was constructed almost entirely from club labor and donations made by members and supporters of NSA. Hundreds of man-hours went into planning how to build and pay for this facility and an estimated fifteen thousand volunteer hours were donated by our members.

NSA members are encouraged to use the facility for family outings, meetings, and social functions all year around. With the summer months in full swing the After-deck is in use more than any other time of the year. This is a good time to be reminded of the rules that have been adopted for Association member’s use of the Afterdeck.

A. No pets.B. Children under the age of 12

must be accompanied by an adult at any time. Minors (under the age of 21) may not be in the Afterdeck after 11:00 p.m. unless accompanied by an adult.

C. An NSA member must accom-pany all guests.

D. No use of tobacco products in the building is allowed.

E. Grilling inside of the building is not allowed. Only gas grilling on the deck is permitted pro-vided that the grill is positioned at least ten (10) feet away from the building walls. Grilling on the patio directly beneath the deck is not permitted.

F. Exclusive use of the facility requires a reservation and pay-ment of a security deposit and is subject to the Associations Standard Afterdeck Rental Agreement Terms, Fees and

Conditions. Contact the Past Commodore to obtain those documents.

G. Member use in connection with any Commercial Enterprise is subject to the Association’s Standard Afterdeck Rental Agreement Terms, Fees and Conditions. This rule does not apply to events affiliated with or sponsored by the Association.

H. Any planned non-exclusive use by an organized group of 10 or more people requires prior advance notice to, and approval from, the Past Commodore to avoid scheduling conflicts. The member requesting the use of the facility will assume full re-sponsibility for damages to the facility or loss of NSA articles from the facility. Active mem-bers having joined the club in the preceding twelve (12) months will be required

to pay the then current security deposit.

I. Requests for exclusive use in sea-son (May 1 to September 30) will be considered on a case by case basis by the Past Commodore.

J. If you are the last person out, close and lock all windows and doors as you leave.

K. Clean up and remove all trash before you leave.

L. All Cheney State Park and NSA rules, including noise restriction after 11:00 p.m., will be obeyed.

M. Overnight lodging in the After-deck is not allowed without prior approval of the Board except in the case of dangerous weather conditions or other emergency.

N. If a problem arises, notify a Board member, the Property Manager, or the Administrative Secretary.

These rule may be found in the NSA yearbook on page 118.

The Memorial Day Cook-Out kicked off the 2013 Sail-ing Season on Sunday, May 30th. Even though the only thing floating in the slips was Gary Feist’s lonely little Sunbird, the warm weather and raising water provided the necessary elements for a great turnout. Approxi-mately 83 members and guests were in attendance. Eric Sunberg and crew fired up the big charcoaler and cooked up the burgers and dogs to perfection, while wife Leslie coordinated the serving line in the After-deck. The real hit of the event was the side dishes. Some of the best Kansas homecooking you could wish for was provided by the members. It’s true we are drawn togeth-er by our passion for sailing, but this club never ceases to amaze me with the sense of ownership everyone feels for the club and facilities. Many pitched in and helped set up, clean up, and put up just like they do at family get togethers. And to top it all off, donations almost covered the entire thing! What a club.

With the cold weather finally behind us, and the cot-tonwood leaves blowing in the breeze, there is an air of excitement and anticipation in the club with talk of not IF we can put in but WHEN we can put in. With favor-able weather conditions still in view, 2013 may prove to be a great sailing year afterall. For those of you that were not able to attend, I encourage you to come on out for the Summer Sailstice/Blessing of the Fleet on June 23rd. See you at the Lake!

Celebrate Sailing!Summer Sailstice was founded in February 2001 by John Arndt, as the global, annual celebration of sail-ing held on the summer solstice. This is NSA’s third year to participate.

The annual Summer Sailstice sailing event is free to all participants and has grown from 200 boats signed up in 2001 to almost 5,000 boats this year. With many sailors joining in on the fun with many different boats, the actual number of Summer Sailstice sailors participating is estimated at almost 19,000 annually.

Super Full Moon Sunday, June 23, 2013; 6:33 a.m.

A super full moon occurs when the moon’s closest approach to the Earth (lunar perigee) coincides with the phase of full moon. When this happens the moon may seem bigger and brighter.

The moon is Earth’s only natural satel-lite that is in a synchronous rotation with the Earth. When viewed from Earth, you can only see one side of the Moon due to the moon’s rotation and orbit around the Earth. The moon spins at about the same speed and direction as it orbits around the Earth which causes the same side to always be facing the Earth. It is the second bright-est object in the sky after the Sun due to its soil’s reflective properties.

The tides on Earth are mostly generated by the intensity of the Moon’s gravitational pull from one side of the Earth to the oth-er. The moon’s gravity can cause small ebbs and flows in the continents called land tides or solid Earth tides. These are greatest during the full and new moons because the sun and moon are aligned on the same or opposite sides of the Earth.

The full moon on Sunday, June 23rd, is the closest and largest full moon of the year. It also presents the moon’s closest encounter with Earth for all of 2013. The moon will not be so close again until August, 2014

Astronomers call this sort of close full moon a perigee full moon. The word perigee describes the moon’s closest point to Earth for a given month. Two years ago, when the closest and largest full moon fell on March 19, 2011, many used a term that had never been heard before: supermoon. Last year, this term was used again to de-scribe the year’s closest full moon on May 6, 2012. Now the term supermoon is being used a lot.

What does supermoon mean exactly, and how special is the June 23, 2013 supermoon?

There are 4-6 supermoons a year on average. In fact, June 2013 presents the moon’s closest encounter with Earth until August 10, 2014, at which time the moon will be a scant 5 kilometers closer to Earth. The full moon will come even closer to Earth on September 28, 2015 (356,877 kilometers) and closer yet on November 14, 2016 (356,509 kilometers). November 2016 will feature the closest full moon until November 25, 2034! .

This time period is equal to about 1 year, 1 month, and 18 days. The full moon and perigee will realign again on August 10, 2014, because the 14th full moon after the 2013 June 23 full moon will fall on that date.

Moon closest to EarthYear Date Distance2011 March 19 356,575 km2012 May 6 356,955 km2013 June 23 356,991 km2014 August 10 356,896 km2015 September 28 356,877 km2016 November 14 356,509 km

Looking further into the future, the perigee full moon will come closer than 356,500 kilometers for the first time in the 21st century on November 25, 2034 (356,446 km). The closest full moon of the 21st century will fall on December 6, 2052 (356,421 km).

For the moon to come closer than 356,400 kilometers (221,457 miles) is quite a feat. In fact, this won’t happen at all in the 21st century (2001-2100) or the 22nd century (2101-2200). The last time the full moon perigee swung this close to Earth was on January 14, 1930 (356,397 km), and the next time won’t be till January 1, 2257 (356,371 km).

Bottom line: The full moon of June 22-23, 2013 is

the closest and largest full moon of this year. By a new definition – one that has just entered the world of astronomy from astrology – many will call it a supermoon. There are three full moons in 2013 that meet the definition of a supermoon – May, June and July. But this June 22-23 full moon is the most super of the super-moons! A super-duper moon!

2013 SeaWind National Class Regatta Reportby Rob Fresh

The Air Capital Model Sailing Club of Wichita, Kansas, hosted the 9th annual SeaWind National Championship Regatta, June 1 and 2. Twelve skippers represented five states. The venue was Horseshoe Lake, one of several small lakes in Sedgwick County Park in Wichita. With recent severe weather to our immediate south in Moore, Oklaho-ma, and the same forecast for our area a day after the regatta, we were indeed fortunate to sandwich in cooperative weather for the Regatta. Actual competition was held June 1 and 2, but skippers arrived Friday, May 31 for an afternoon of practice. Naturally, the ideal Friday condi-tions were not repeated the following days.

Friday evening, everyone convened at the home of Rob and Nancy Fresh, to enjoy wonderful food, great conversation, and maybe a couple of beers. Old friendships were renewed, and familiar names were matched to new faces.

On Saturday morning, the 12 skippers found cool temperatures and shifty winds. Although forecast to be heavy, the air actually remained just within the limits of the Skippers and boats. Race Director Allen Archer approved a single 12 boat fleet, with offset marks to windward, and a gate to leeward. The light-then-heavy, shifty winds were mostly NW-NE--unusual for this time of year. They stretched the limits of strategy and tactics (not to mention tuning!) for the skippers, and demanded their full attention. Even so, 21 heats were completed, with Eric Rosenbaum from Texas and Mike Eades from Arizona setting the pace.

Saturday evening found the skippers, staff and spouses at Granite City Restaurant & Brewery sampling the cuisine and locally crafted malt beverages. Stories flew, laughter blew, and everyone had a genuinely good time!

On Sunday morning, the same wind patterns as Saturday greeted the skippers, but slightly less wind speed. Race Director Archer ap-proved a course change, which was laid in to the south of the previous day’s course. The upwind-downwind course was similar to the previ-ous day, but now allowed easier course management. The shifty winds continued. On several occasions, a few boats on a beat to the wind-ward mark experienced crazy wind shifts causing all to “auto tack” at the same time, much like a water ballet. This prompted “ooh-aah”s from the spectator gallery! 12 heats were completed on Sunday.

The regatta ended with an impressive total of 33 heats allow-ing 3 throw-outs. First place went to Eric Rosenbaum (TX), who maintained his lead over Mike Eades (AZ). Third, was Mauricio Dantas (TX) who changed leads with Andy Rust (KS) at least twice, before settling in.

A special thank you to Race Director Allen Archer (NSA) and Scorekeeper Kate Crandell, both of whom did an outstanding job, and also Observer/photographer Travis Donily who battled chang-ing conditions to call a 12 boat fleet. Thanks also to Rob and Nancy Fresh (NSA) for coordinating Friday and Saturday night events, as well as helping with lunches; and assistants Andy Rust, Travis Donily, Steve Crandell, Scott Moses, and Brett Hudson for helping with camp, marks, and photography.
