Anacapa Yacht Club Mainsheet Volume 2012 Issue 5 May 2012 Commodores Report: BILL BRAYTON We are so lucky to have such a wonderful area to go boating. We have the beautiful Channel Islands to explore right in our backyard. We can cross the Santa Barbara Channel in a short period of time and anchor at a number of places and experience the wonders that nature has to offer. Bald eagles are making a comeback on Santa Cruz Island thanks to the conservationists. The Grey and Humpback whales are free to roam the channel thanks to tighter restrictions on shipping speeds in the channel. All this beauty around us and yet this past month we all mourn the loss of fellow sailors. Not once but twice tragedy struck the sailing community. First we heard the news that a boat racing around the Farallone Islands off San Francisco. The boat was struck by a large wave and rolled. Most of the crew were washed off the boat. A second wave hit the boat from behind and washed the remaining crew off the boat. Five out of eight were tragically lost that day. All crew members were wearing proper PFD's at the time of incident. The second sad story comes from the recently ran Newport to Ensenada Race. This past Saturday I read the news of a boat going missing in the early hours of the morning on Saturday. It was reported that the tracking signal disappeared around 1:30am. It appears that the boat, a Hunter 376 with 4 crew aboard, was involved in a collision with a much larger vessel. Reports from race officials dispatched to the scene said “it looked like a boat had been put in a blender”. This is the first time in the 65 year history of the race that there has been a loss of life.We all love our boats and boating yet there are inherent dangers to our pastime. It is up to each and every individual, whether captain of crew, to assess the situations they are presented with and act accordingly as far as personal safety is concerned. Safe boating is fun boating. On a brighter note.We had some late winter/early spring storms pass through the area early this month/late last month and these storms really did a number on our racing buoys. The Wes mark went missing and was found about a mile away from Gina. The Mandalay mark went missing and was found about a mile off the detached breakwater. Although the responsibility of the Mandalay mark belongs to another local yacht club our very own Mike Taylor got after taking care of the mark. Thanks to Mike the Mandalay mark got a fresh coat of paint and new reflective tape. Huge thanks to Andy Killion at Anchors Way Boat Yard for hauling the mark out of the water and donating a gallon of bottom paint for the job. Last weekend I got to take the trip out to the Wes mark and assist in getting it back onto its permitted location. Joe Underwood, Doug Fajardo and myself got out to the Wes mark aboard Graham Dawson’s Cal 48. Graham and his scuba diving expertise made this job an extremely easy one. Thanks to Graham the Wes mark is back on station and it has a new 30 pound bruce anchor attached to the rest of the anchor gear. May is here and with the new month comes the start of our Wet Weds season. This is, in my opinion, such a great time of year for our club. We have so many opportunities to shine as a club. This has always been a user friendly series. It’s a great venue for novice racers to get out there and practice their starts, tactics and mark roundings. Get a crew together and take your boat out for as many Wet Weds as possible. After the race its time to head back to the club for our world famous cook your own meat BBQ and awards ceremony. Don’t forget to fill out your crew prize ticket so you can win some of the great swag provided by our sponsors. On the horizon Just look at the calendar! We have so many great events coming up this month! Starting this weekend with our annual Cinco de Mayo Party and ending the month with a cruise to Prisoners Harbor. So if you like good food, Wet Weds racing and trips to the island you are TOTALLY in the right place! AYC ROCKS! Have a great month! Bill Brayton Commodore

Hello members and friends: April was a busy month for our club beginning with our Opening Day Ceremonies, we had a great turnout of dignitaries from our sister clubs in the harbor and from surrounding areas. A big thank you to all the member that helped with preparing the club, cooking food, cleaning up and just showing up with a smile and representing AYC. It was a proud day for all of us at AYC. We have a reputation of being one of the friendliest clubs in the area and it showed. April also brought us new members! We are excited to welcome, Jason Mack "Mack" and Isabella Rose also Don Dickie and Ingrid Martin. You should be seeing plenty of them around the club as they are enthusiastic about getting involved. As usual we had some great Friday dinners and the meals just keep on coming. On Saturday May 5 P

Ahoy Members and friends,

Wow time is flying, as we enter the month of May the excitement is about to double as the 2012 Wet Wednesday series starts on May 2nd followed by the rescheduled TGIS Winter series number 4 taking place on May 6th. Later in the month our Island series starts with the Anacapa to Port race on May 26th. AYC racing is in full swing so come on out and join the thrill of racing with AYC Now let's talk cruising, this is the month for our first scheduled Santa Cruz Island trip. I am really looking forward to this cruise as this will be the all club cruise out to Prisoners cove on May 26 through May 28th, this cruise is going to be co-hosted by yours truly (Joe Underwood) AYC's cruise chairman and Don Dickey new AYC member and CIYC cruise chairman. Please stay tuned for cruise details coming out soon. I would like to give a big thanks and job well done for all the hard work that went into rescuing and servicing the race marks and getting them back on station for the busy race season. Mike Taylor was instrumental in getting the Mandalay Mark serviced and placed back to its permitted location and Gram Dawson with the help of Doug Fajardo, Bill Brayton and yours truly for getting the Wes Mark re-anchored and back to its permitted location. Servicing all the race marks is a group effort and requires skilled people that know what they are doing. We as a club need to start looking for volunteers to train in servicing the race marks and we need to get the word out that divers are needed. We have several members taking part in the famed Newport to Ensenada race and a crew of members heading off to Antigua race week, our members are getting around and flying the club colors proudly.

URacing EventsU; 1. First Wet Wednesday May 2nd. 2. Rescheduled TGIS Winter series #4 May 6th. 3. Second Wet Wednesday May 9th. 4. Third Wet Wednesday May 16th. 5. Fourth Wet Wednesday May 23rd 6. Anacapa to Port ( Island series #1). 7. Fifth Wet Wednesday May 30th. UCruising EventsU: All club cruise to Prisoners cove May 26-28th.

For more information about on-the-water activities please call or e-mail me at (805) 529-0934 or [email protected] Hope to see you on the water or in the club. Joe Underwood AYC Rear Commodore / Cruise Chairman / Staff Commodore
