Here at Best Practice, we are pleased to announce that Verder Ltd has been awarded with our highly regarded Commitment to Excellence award.

Verder the company, founded in 1959 by Andre Verder started as an entrepreneurial trading company in different industrial and laboratory products. Headquartered in the Netherlands, the brand now boasts a significant presence in 25 countries with 50 companies and 1,600+ employees and a growing base of loyal customers.

International expansion of the company outside its home market in The Netherlands, started when the founder moved across the border in 1970. In the 10 years after following Germany, France, UK and Austria. When the political scene changes dramatically in Europe, we took the challenge to move into the Eastern part of Europe swiftly with own operations. Customers however did not only ask for supply of Verder’s products in Europe but drove the company towards Japan, China, USA, India and South Africa to serve these countries with own entities.

This growth inevitably led to the expansion of its product lines as well – which originally consisted

of distributed brands from trusted suppliers – with the addition of more own-name products courtesy of liaisons with manufacturers and important acquisitions (including Retsch in 1995, van Wijk en Boerma & Empo in 2002 and Eltra & Carbolite in 2012).

Verder is a reputable supplier specialising peristaltic pumping solutions for liquid handling; hose pumps and tube pumps for various applications including water treatments, chemical dosing, mining, food & drink and many more! Verder pumps not only offer pumping solutions for a wide range of liquids and/or slurries of varied viscosity, density and chemical properties but also offer solutions that are highly reliable & efficient with low maintenance and low operating costs.

The industry innovator – Verder: stocks everything from the smallest of Original Equipment Manufacture

(OEM) pumps to the world’s largest hose pumps for usage in heavy engineering purposes. Applications for the premium peristaltic hose and tube pumps are incredibly widespread, as the equipment has proven to be most effective in mining, food & beverage, chemical, water & wastewater, pharmaceutical, printing and packaging environments (to name a few examples).

Verder has been selected for this award for its exceptional range of products and impressively vast network of distributors globally and for its dedication to remaining a customer-orientated and green enterprise. The group operates in accordance with its 7 core principles: obedience of the law, honesty & integrity, mutual trust & respect, workplace safety, intolerance of forced/child labour and ethical business activities. RCT Homes issues Guardian24’s Microguard Device to high risk staffSocial housing provider, RCT Homes has selected Guardian24’s state-of-the-art MicroGuard device to protect their lone working and at-risk employees.

RCT Homes, is a registered social landlord to over 11,000 properties in a diverse and highly disadvantaged area of South Wales. From allocating housing and collecting rent to major home refurbishments, RCT Homes’ employees are regularly involved within the community. Much of the work

performed by RCT Homes involves employees working alone in tenants’ homes. Without immediate help at hand,

Housing staff are exposed to a greater risk of assault, attack or sustaining injury whilst performing their duties.

After consulting with Guardian24, RCT Homes decided to replace their incumbent personal safety alarms with over 250 MicroGuard devices. With the ever growing problem of attacks on Housing Officers, it was essential for RCT Homes that the safety device they were using had two-way audio capabilities, something their previous solution had lacked. The MicroGuard would enable users to raise an alarm simply by pressing the device’s central SOS button. This would connect them to Guardian24’s Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) where two-way audio enables a trained Controller to either listen in to the situation, or speak if safe to do so.

To find out more about the MicroGuard and Guardian24’s service, please visit: www.Guardian24.co.uk.

Skyguard’s Mysos Device Safeguards Derbyshire Community Health ServicesDerbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust has turned to Skyguard’s BS 8484 approved personal alarms to safeguard their community-based staff tasked with providing in-home services.

Skyguard’s keyfob sized MySOS devices were implemented as a means of discreet protection for lone working staff to carry on their person. Accredited to BS 8484 standards, the device is equipped with the latest mobile phone and GPS tracking technology.

When the user raises the alarm, an alert is instantly sent to Skyguard’s dedicated Incident Management Centre (IMC) along with the GPS location. Using the alarm’s two-way audio, trained Controllers will first listen in and assess the situation before talking to the

user and taking appropriate action. Using the escalation instructions provided, the Controller will, if necessary, directly contact the local

police control room, bypassing the 999 service for a faster response. All audio and actions from the incident are digitally recorded and can be used as legal evidence if required.

Tom Sanders – Health and Safety Advisor for the Trust explains, “There is currently more focus on providing services out in the community. In Derbyshire, we have several areas of deprivation

with high unemployment which makes relationships between

community staff and patients difficult to establish and maintain.”

Info Cube is a unique new concept from The Tube & Bracket Company that allows businesses to create highly personalised structures to display important information in almost any environment.

The reusable modular components used to create an Info Cube are available in a variety of durable materials and colours so that users can devise robust and visually appealing designs that match corporate styles. Info Cube is ideal for visual management applications as well as retail displays, signage, promotions, temporary exhibitions and other settings where an impact is needed.

The simplest Info Cube is built using interchangeable and reusable lengths of steel, aluminium or composite tubing and connectors. Whiteboards, noticeboards, leaflet dispensers, screens and similar flat items can be mounted into the frame to complete

the Info Cube. Wheels or castors can be added to make mobile structures.

An Info Cube can be assembled and dismantled quickly by one person using basic tools. This means that structures can be taken apart after use for simple handling and to take up less space during transportation or storage. All components are robust, resilient and resistant to corrosion.

The Graphit and LeanTek components used to create an Info Cube are the same as those supplied by The Tube & Bracket Company to numerous multinational clients to support lean manufacturing and other efficient production applications. In addition to building adaptable workstations, production cells and handling equipment with these components many companies use them in their visual management systems.

Go electric when you’re looking for precise control and positioning with low operating costsIt’s generally accepted that electric actuators provide flexibility plus precise control and positioning with low operating costs when compared to using standard pneumatic actuators. Whilst falling energy charges have helped address some of the costs issues when using compressed air, high maintenance and operating expenses still remain a major factor.

SMC, who are recognised as the world leaders in pneumatic technology, have embraced the development of electric actuators and now have one of the most impressive ranges of electric drive and control ranges around.

SMC’s latest catalogue of electric actuators and controllers has over 900 pages of product information to help you select the right solution. It is our pleasure here at Best Practice UK to commend the hard work of The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) with our industry coveted Commitment to Excellence profile.

The widely recognised health and safety pre-qualification provider was formed in 1997 courtesy of an arrangement between a group of health and safety professionals and the Association of London Government (ALG). Now the fastest growing and largest scheme of its kind in the UK, CHAS boasts a thriving database comprising over 67,000 suppliers and 830 buyer members.

“CHAS started with two main aims,” detailed Business Development Manager Assistant Sarah Still. “These were to improve health and safety standards across Great Britain and to reduce duplicated safety applications for both suppliers and buyers. This mission has been what has led CHAS to become the name you can trust for health and safety assessment.”

CHAS has been recognised for its methodological approach to applicant selection; approval is only granted upon the completion of routine examinations reviewing the current Health and Safety Management Systems in place. Companies are individually assessed in relation to the associated policies (method statements, risk assessments and training procedures included) to ensure

that they reach the expected industry standards.

Involvement with this company is beneficial to both suppliers and buyers. Suppliers demonstrate compliancy with important health and safety regulations and upon achieving full accreditation a supplier is permitted to work for all CHAS buyers, with their information accessible either via the CHAS website or SSIP portal.

The scheme is available to both public and private sectors, with a membership base that consists of health trusts, councils, emergency services, charities, housing associations, government departments and private companies with an operational supply chain. The CHAS database stores information on a wide range of contractors and consultants, addressing all categories of work from asbestos removal and window cleaning to catering and residential care.

It was back in 2001 when CHAS developed a web-based platform, but just last year its new online process was introduced. The efficient electronic application system, named Eforms, allows assessments and supporting documentation to be submitted online with heightened efficiency, saving everyone a great deal of time and effort.

Best Practice UK is extremely proud to present its highly prestigious and richly deserved Commitment to Excellence profile to Master Lock.

For over 100 years, Master Lock has provided customers with the most effective locking systems available, helping you protect your precious belongings. Whether you require a small lock for a box containing valuables or you’re looking for security in a remote location, Master Lock has the perfect solution.

Founded in 1921 by American locksmith and inventor, Harry Soref, the company has an impressive background. Harry’s first invention was the laminated padlock, built with layers of steel and steel pins to ensure full security. The purpose of this invention was following a request from the federal police searching for a padlock to lock away speakeasies which has been discovered and one that could not be broken by a shot gun. Harry then established the company inventing

more ground breaking solutions such as the twist nob combination lock. In the early 1970’s, Master Lock was sold to Fortune Brands who remain the owner to this day.

Still with the same dedication and innovation they started with, Master Lock introduced many new and innovative solutions for locking systems. From its base in Chicago, the company provide services to around 175 countries with a strong presence in Australia and Africa as well as its

core business in the UK and America.

“We provide peace of mind and protection where people live, work and play,” commented Commercial Sales Director, Andy Culhane. “We have the most recognised, trusted and iconic security brands in our markets that promise the best-in-class value, ease of use, durability, reliability, quality and service.

“Our products are extremely unique and offer exceptional levels of security. As the largest global manufacturer and marketer of padlocks, we continue to build our founder’s passion for innovation, quality, and compelling value into our expanding lines of security solutions.”

With Master Lock’s extensive range

of products which includes padlocks, bike locks, cargo security bungies and straps and remote locking systems, you are sure to find the right solution for your needs.

One of the latest innovations in the range is the Bluetooth padlock. A revolution in modern technology, the lock allows owners to gain access or unlock systems using your mobile phone or an alternative directional combination code. The lock is accompanied by a downloadable app from which you can allow access to chosen persons and select a time scale for which they can enter. Guests can be added or deleted as and when required and deletion means all access will be denied.

Giving you full control, the intelligent system will log which people have entered the location as well as the time they were there for. If a guest was to try to gain access out of hours, the app alerts you on who it was and when they attempted entry. The fully secure system is ideal for use in remote locations or vehicle fleets which require high security.

“This system has been extremely well received by our customers and we are continuously developing the app in order for it to be used across a broader spectrum. We have recently launched a new safe range which offers a high security solution with exceptional levels of fire and flood protection. Master Lock acquired the Sentry Safe business in 2014 which is now fully integrated into the Master Lock business retaining all the expertise and benefits built up over many years of development by Sentry together with the great name and security of the Master Lock company.”

The Birmingham-based business offers the following: power factor correction products, PowerCan capacitor elements, capacitor modules, PowerCab & PowerCabPlus capacitor cubicles, reactive power control relays, detuning reactors, transwave converters, power electronic capacitors and the capacitor chassis formula range. The competencies of its highly qualified engineers extend to the servicing, upkeep and installation of any kind of power factor correction instruments as well as any necessary onsite services.

PCL provides maintenance work conducted by engineers who are on hand every day of the week on a nationwide basis. This includes everything from a simple health check to the repair and rebuild of different brands of power factor correction equipment, treating the deterioration of component parts as appropriate and eradicating unforeseen increases in electricity charges by means of regular checks.

PCL recently attended the UK’s principal manufacturing technologies event, MACH 2016, for the very first time.

Whilst at the renowned biennial engineering exhibition the team impressed both visitors and exhibitors alike with its strong performance range of single to three phase converters and power factor correction equipment.

Those attending the recent edition of MACH between 11-15 April at the NEC Birmingham could find PCL in the UK Manufacturing Zone displaying its TRANSWAVE converters and IMO inverters. Attendees drawn to the stand found the cost-effective innovations to be of great value: industrial companies hoping to improve their green credentials sought out the opportunity to reduce energy bills and save carbon, whilst individuals occupying workshops with single phase electricity supplies were introduced to the advantages of three phase machinery operation.

If you would like to find out more about PCL then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with its team of friendly and approachable representatives today. Enimac is a developer/manufacturer of self-adhesive tape application machinery with over 40 years of experience in the marketplace. The Italian based company specialises in the design and production of both standard and custom tape application systems as well as stand-alone systems and solutions that can easily be integrated into production processes. Their standard machine line offers two revolutionary machines to eliminate the production bottleneck of applying self-

adhesive tapes by hand for companies in the print and

point of sale industry, the X-Treme Light and X-Treme Pro.

The machines automate self-adhesive tape application and provide a cost-effective solution to increase productivity by up to 400%. The X-Treme light is designed for small/medium format products and can tape materials up to 1,000mm wide, its bigger brother the X-Treme pro can tape materials up to 1,600mm wide. Both machines can apply all types of self-adhesive tapes to a wide range of materials and setup times

are less than 5 minutes.

With offices and production facilities based near Milan, Italy, the company has satisfied clients in Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, the UK, France and South Korea. Newtown is the exclusive distributor of Enimac machines for the UK and Ireland and successfully exhibited the machinery at The Print Show last October.

“Despite being a small company that is still growing, we have a diversified client base,” commented Martin Buerger, International Business Development Manager at Enimac. “We have many customers in various industries across many different countries because we have the capability to offer individual clients the amount of automation they need.” “As we are part of a tape converting group, we don’t just sell our customers automation,

but complete tape application solutions. Many of the problems they have we have seen before and can deal with them using our years of expertise.”

If you are ready to turbocharge your tape application productivity and reduce your production costs with an X-Treme series tape application machine, get in touch for more information.

MANUFACTURERS AND SUPPLIERS OF ENERGY PUMPS

FOR THE WASTE WATER INDUSTRY AND BEYOND

ENERGY RAM PISTON PUMPSEnergy Ram and Diaphragm Pumps are designed and manufactured in-house, ensuring the vital quality, toughness and reliability of these essential products. Energy Pumps range of Ram Pumps begins with the smallest 240mm mechanical Ram, through to the 460mm hydraulic Ram Pump. With many different sizes available, it ensures that there is an Energy Pump for most STW applications, including Quarries and Mines where Energy Ram Pumps are suited to tough grit and slit handling.

The Hydraulic Ram Pumps are controlled by our own software, also developed “in-house,” so that we are able to tailor the Pump to your exact needs, ensuring maximum performance for the job in hand. Energy hydraulic Ram Pumps are also available in a duplex configuration which allows for higher flow rates, with pressures reaching up to 20 bar.

ENERGY DIAPHRAGM PUMPSThe Energy Maxi, Major and Mastiff Diaphragm Pumps are the invaluable mainstay of many Sewage Treatment Works. They are competent in both primary and humus desludging and sledge transfer duties. Energy Pumps also have many applications in any industries which need to pump difficult sludge reliably and economically. The patented positive flow base of our Diaphragm Pumps, with patented anti-ragging, non-return Valves is designed to ensure that air quickly passes through the base, which then leads to an easier flow of contaminated materials. This, in turn offers low maintenance and ease of repair, when necessary. Energy Pumps are the obvious choice for many maintenance engineers.

The range of Energy Diaphragm Pumps varies according to the application. The Energy Hydraulic Mastiff Diaphragm Pump is ideally suited for those jobs which require pumping difficult sludge to higher pressures while retaining longevity and reliability, plus ease of maintenance as with Energy Mechanical Pumps. The reliable and versatile Energy Mastiff Diaphragm Pump is based on our highly successful Major. Our Mechanical and Hydraulic Mastiffs allow for greater flow rates and delivery Head. They are capable of processing materials much quicker than the Energy Major Pump, for those tough-handling jobs which require the most robust Pumps. Being the smallest of the Energy Pumps, the Energy Maxi Diaphragm Pump was initially the first to be designed for small STW’s. This Pump has also proven itself to be popular with Abattoirs and Potteries. All Energy Diaphragm Pumps are reliable Flood-Water Pumps and are popular with Farmers for effluent, animal-feed and Agricultural purposes.

Anvil Traction releases the Zevaz slip resistant safety Wellington bootThe Zevaz slip resistant safety Wellington Boot from Anvil Traction, the market leader in slip resistant safety footwear, is now available to order. Designed with the food industry in mind, these ultra-lightweight wellington boots combine the latest in polymer technology with the highly acclaimed Anvil Traction slip resistant sole.

The slip resistant outsole is based on Anvil Traction’s Anchor design. The octagonal pattern has a wider cleat arrangement which avoids clogging when used in areas of high contamination and the multiple leading edges provide a wiping action to move lubricant out of the way. The slip resistant rubber compound 07/03, mechanically improves slip resistance and exceeds the minimum average requirements in accordance with ENISO 20345:2011 by an incredible 48%. A yellow wear indicator cleat is built into the outsole that focuses on the rate of sole abrasion and provides a visible indication of when the wellington should be replaced.

The upper polymer material is an expanded foam full of air, which acts as an excellent thermal insulator and has been tested and approved to CI standards. The air filled polymer construction offers outstanding comfort for the wearer and reduces muscle fatigue and stress over the course of a working day with the EVA Energy formula offering superb under-foot impact absorption and providing added rebound energy between steps.

Sentry® shines a brighter light on eliminating blind corner hazardsCollision Sentry was designed to create a safer working environment in industrial buildings where forklift traffic and pedestrian traffic intersect. Like a traffic light, Collision Sentry provides a visual warning to drivers and pedestrians that traffic is around the corner. Collision Sentry is easy to install, self-powered, compact, highly visible and reliable.

Based on customer feedback, Sentry Protection Products upgraded its award winning Collision Sentry collision warning system to feature a more focused, more intense warning light for increased visibility. To do this, the LED lights were re-positioned and the diffusing lens was replaced with one that concentrates the focus of the light beam toward the areas where people can best see it; increasing the intensity of the beam anywhere from five to 20 times. Sentry was able to boost the light’s intensity without compromising energy efficiency.

Introduced in 2014, Collision Sentry creates a safer working environment in industrial settings by reducing or eliminating ‘blind corner’ collisions that occur when forklift traffic and pedestrian traffic intersect.

Printing News

Primera Technology Europe: People who innovateAs the world's leading manufacturer of Disc Publishing and Printing Systems, Primera is specialised in producing CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc publishing equipment, specialty colour label printers and medical solutions. Founded in September 1998 as a spin-off from Fargo Electronics Inc. (founded 1975), the company was built on traditional innovation and over the years has become renowned for their exceptional product offering and incomparable customer service.

In the year 2000, the global operating company established a central office for the EMEA region, called Primera Technology Europe. Primera Europe is responsible for marketing, sales, logistics, support and service in that region and is located in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Primera Europe has three main parts to the business, disc publishing and printing robotics, label printers and applicators and medical slide and cassette printers. The company is well known for their high quality label printers including the Digital Color Label Press and Finishers (CX/FX-series), Inkjet Label Printers (LX-series) and Label Applicators (AP-series).

Newly introduced to the range is the LX2000e, which represents an entirely new product class in desktop label printing. This inkjet label printer, using BS5609 section 3 certified pigment ink, benefits

from large separate ink cartridges, which keeps costs per label low and prints quickly with speeds up to six inches per second. Wired Ethernet, USB 2.0 and wireless connectivity enables an easy integration of the LX2000e in existing production processes and allows printing f. e. GHS compliant labels, when and where needed.

This, along with the best-selling LX900e label printer, which is known for its fast printing speed and for producing sharp, high photo quality labels, is becoming increasingly popular with consumers.

Primera offers a wide range of printers according to different needs: For start-up companies it provides a small, affordable printer like the upcoming LX500e, that provides everything you require from designing to importing labels, and for large industrial companies who have large printing needs, it can provide them

with high production systems. The label printers can print whatever the customer needs, whether it be 1, 1.000 or 10.000 labels.

Customer's satisfaction is one of Primera’s main priorities, which is why, unlike other manufacturers, a free label designing and printing software is included as well as a

2-year warranty. Primera’s distributors are situated all over the world and specialise in these products so they are always on hand to offer advice and guidance for consumers.

Primera has also introduced a new portable, all-in-one label printer to the ever-growing range – the Primera Trio. No bigger than a hard cover book and weighing just 1.2 kg, the new creation is the lightest and fastest on the market. It offers the same benefits as standard office machines: printing in high resolution and

colour, scanning and copying, but in a portable size for on the road usage.

When asked to discuss the company’s plans for the future, Andreas Hoffmann, Managing Director of Primera Technology

Europe says, “The label market is continuously growing and we are looking to expanding into new markets. Companies are now realising they need more than just a standard label and we are always developing new printing systems.”

Lighting News

The Sports Village – SuttonTennis and badminton court light levels and reductions in annual running costs by 75%Tennis, like many sports, relies on carefully designed lighting to deliver the high illuminance levels required for standard and competitive play. Crucial to both the lighting designer and the light manufacturer is minimising glare and shadow while also ensuring the court is as evenly lit as possible.

The courts at Sutton Tennis were previously fitted with fluorescent tube totalling around 6,480W per court of power consumed. Continuous play meant the Club was consuming over 262,080kWh annually. With a total of 9 courts, this amounted to an annual electricity bill of £31,449 just for lighting the courts.

Pulsar Light was approached by the The Sports Village Sutton about our Eco-Range solutions, particularly the UniBay130 – a fixture designed by Pulsar Light in collaboration with England sports bodies and players.

After visiting the site and preparing extensive light calculations, Pulsar Light created a scheme with the UniBay130 that reduced the running cost of each court and provided an increase to the original light levels.

The final scheme included 16 x UniBay130W fittings (per court) with 42 degree optics, which reduced the total consumption to 64,396kWh and the total club energy bill to just £7,727 (a £23,721 annual saving). In addition to paying less in electric bills, light level readings were taken averaging 400 lux, perfect for daily practice and club matches.

The UniBay130 is recommended and preferred by professional tennis players because of the superior quality of light that it produces. The UniBay is the only LED light designed specifically for tennis players to produce continuous, flicker-free light by using a Constant Current Driver to power the LED’s. Every other LED light

uses Pulse Width Modulation to power the LED’s, which pulses (strobes) them at high frequency. A tennis court illuminated with lights using Pulse Width Modulation can cause a stroboscopic effect on a tennis ball which is moving quickly, a major distraction for players and coaches. All of Pulsar’s LED lights (both EcoRange and Chroma Range) are Flicker Free and use only constant current drivers.

Pulsar Light of Cambridge manufactures a wide range of colour controlled LED lighting for large-scale international Architectural Projects, Television Shows, Live Performances, Hotels, and many other applications. Pulsar’s EcoRange provides high power, high efficiency white LED lighting backed Pulsar’s commitment to quality, reliability, and durability.

Our factory and offices are located in Cambridge, England, where we have been manufacturing lighting for 40 years. Cosmopolitan TowerPulsar Fixtures illuminate defining features Warsaw, Poland“The lighting of the red cantilever certainly reinforces the architectural feature of the Cosmopolitan and makes the building an icon on Emilii Platter!”Helmut Jahn

■ Cosmopolitan Tower is Warsaw’s premiere residential skyscraper (160 metres high, 44 storeys), in central Warsaw, Poland. It has 236 apartments, each with floor-to-ceiling windows which provide panoramic views of Warsaw. The building also has a commercial level at ground level, three floors of offices, and a recreation area at level 4 for residents

■ The tower was designed by architect Helmut Jahn, and developed by Tacit Investment. “To me, urban space is essential to architecture.

All my buildings respond to the existing urban space, while creating it with their arrangement and rhythm” says Helmut Jahn. As part of his design, the tower has a red ceiling above level 4, providing a key visual element from street level and for residents enjoying the recreation area.

■ The CEO of Cosmopolitan Tower asked Pulsar to assist with lighting the tower. Existing lights for the

red ceiling had been installed by a building company. The location, colour and beam angle of the lights resulted in a poorly lit feature with hot spots, poor colour rendition and high operating costs

■ Pulsar provided a well-designed lighting scheme for the red ceiling which took into account desired effect, viewing angles (pedestrians and residents), operating costs and maintenance costs. The solution was 8 x ChromaFlood100R fixtures discretely mounted so as to be invisible to viewers, yet provide consistent illumination of the feature ceiling

■ Pulsar also provided lighting for the tower’s exterior atrium (shown above in blue), using 12 ChromaFlood 200’s to provide lighting with infinite colour capabilities. These are changed to suit special occasions, seasons and time of day. Pulsar also integrated ChromaAR111TC fictures into the sculpture ‘You and I’ by artist Eran Shakine

■ The whole system is controlled by Pulsar’s own Architectural grade controllers, making the system both user friendly and flexible at the same time.

Pulsar delivers 452 ChromaRange fixtures in a month to Jay Z’s Magna Carter World TourVarious Locations, WorldwideAt the end of August 2013, Jay Z’s Magna Carter World Tour stage design had been finalised and the concerts sold out. With the first date of the epic tour fast approaching, the production company LS-Live had barely a month to find their lighting solution. Pulsar Light of Cambridge Ltd (Pulsar) was a key provider of the set lighting, a manufacturer LS-Live knew could provide customized products that were robust enough for touring and would deliver on time.

On September 5th, Pulsar received an order for 412 ChromaPanel 600 and 40 600W Rack Mount ChromaZone units

set for delivery on the 24th and 27th September – just 12 working days before the first performance. Each unit was specially customised with XLR6 connectors, and the order was received and processed with the factory working around the clock to meet the deadline. The entire order arrived at the first stadium in time for the build and ready for full rehearsals. This incredible manufacturing feat was only possible due to Pulsar’s unique position as a UK based manufacturer with unrivalled in-house capability and expertise.

Designing, manufacturing, and sourcing as much of the supply chain in the UK as possible, Pulsar is able to process large orders quickly and efficiently without the lengthy delays incurred by shipping

integral components from overseas or outsourced manufacturing steps. “We work metal, powder- coat, solder, weld, and assemble LED boards in house as much as we can, and this keeps our lead-times short.” explains Pulsar’s CEO, Brian Pohl, “So when a customer has a deadline like this – especially with large orders – Pulsar is able to respond quickly. In such a dynamic marketplace this keeps us ahead of the competition. We can adapt to complete orders rapidly, and always deliver the highly reliable products customers have come to expect from Pulsar.”

With 51 shows in two legs planned, a highly reliable fixture was required. Selecting Pulsar, LS-Live knew they could get what they want with unsurpassed quality – a necessity given the short build-up and break-down times of the set in each location and rough life of touring production equipment.

Based in the heart of Cambridge UK, Pulsar develops and manufactures LED lighting and lighting control solutions for professional architectural and entertainment applications around the world.

Holy Trinity Church, BlythburghHoly Trinity Church, Blythburgh, Suffolk, is known locally as ‘The Cathedral of the Marshes’ and it stands tall, visible for miles from the A12 trunk road. Like many other Churches, Holy Trinity relies on carefully designed external lighting to make its flint decorated architecture a local landmark by night as well as by day. A warm colour rendering, minimal light pollution and restricted glare were inherent factors in the design brief of this relighting project, which covered every elevation of this wonderful building.

Following a successful re-lighting of St Peter & St Paul, Wangford, which is in the same group of parishes, the design and installation team of James Laws and Boggis Electrical of Wrentham was chosen by Blythburgh PCC to re-light Holy Trinity. They selected Pulsar Light Eco-Range floods for both projects.

Holy Trinity Church was previously lit

externally with a variety of sodium and other discharge fittings, with an estimated total power consumption of 2,800 watts. The use of the Eco-Range products enabled this figure to be reduced by 46% to 1,500 watts, using the same floodlighting positions (saving on re-wiring costs).

To reduce light pollution and to give even coverage, the lighting of the tower was achieved by use of narrow angle 130 watt Eco-Range for the upper parts and wider 60 watt units for the lower masonry.

Intelligence your fingertips, keeping you in ControlUtilisation of microprocessor burner controls, flue gas economisers and thermal improvements in boiler lagging have enabled boiler manufacturers to achieve significant improvements in boiler efficiency: heat input minus the sum of the losses. Stated efficiencies are based on ‘IDEAL’ conditions, the reproduction of which under actual operating conditions is entirely dependent on how much care is taken by the boiler operator.

Boiler efficiency calculations are based on the assumption that all the heat transfer surfaces are clean and the boiler is operating at its maximum continuous rating (MCR). In order to ensure that the design efficiency can be maintained throughout the lifetime of the boiler all parts in contact with water must remain clean: scale and corrosion free.

It is one thing designing and building boilers with improved thermal efficiency, it is an entirely different matter maintaining the efficiency throughout its operational lifetime.

The ‘Aquanet system’ is based on an analysis of boiler and make-up water and dosing the precise amount of chemicals needed to maintain the optimum feedwater chemistry. It is the only microprocessor based chemical dosing system offering continuous and consistent water quality control.

Helping UK companies save on energy usageBased in the West Midlands, Leading Energy works with companies throughout the UK helping them to save on their energy usage. Reducing energy and becoming more energy efficient is now seen by businesses as an achievable goal but falling fossil fuel prices has meant some have stalled in committing to energy improvement projects. Climate Change is still on the global agenda and increasingly companies want to do the right thing. However, many companies just don’t have the time to assess their usage and build a plan to put in place.

Having built up a wealth of experience in engineering in industry, Director Cathie Eberlin set up the company in 2008 to provide renewable energy advice which has developed into a full energy efficiency

consultancy service.

After reviewing ESOS assessments it is apparent that many companies are missing opportunities to reduce their energy bills and are also missing out on renewables that still have the potential to provide a return. Tariffs under the FIT and RHI scheme have a limited time before technologies will

be expected to survive on their own so if you are considering replacing heating and cooling systems or have space for PV then now is the time to act before the schemes die all together.

Bowman Chilled StoresBowman Chilled Stores in Spalding is a family run business which has been established for over 50 years. Over the years Mr & Mrs Bowman had a strong influence in large scale horticulture ranging from daffodil, vegetable and cereals.

After the decision was taken to stop production, Mr Bowman decided to convert existing buildings and refurbish them to an extremely high standard for refrigerated storage. This included the licence to store meat, fish and dairy produce.

After visiting the site and preparing extensive light calculations, Pulsar Light created a scheme with the UniBay130 that dramatically reduced the running cost of the chilled storage units, whilst significantly improving on the existing light levels.

The short lifespan of the existing 100 Metal Halide fittings were costing £1.200 a year to maintain and led to reduced light levels and productions stoppages when light servicing and replacement

were taking place. Pulsar’s maintenance free LED lighting upgrade eradicated all of these issues and their associated costs.

The final scheme consisted of 104 x UniBay130W fittings with 80 CRI at 5,000K including G90 glare control optics. One of the many features of our UniBay130 is the multiple fixing options, Bowman’s chose our low profile bracket (F003), enabling them to fit all UniBay fittings flush to the ceiling, allowing more space for fork lift trucks as well as creating a more even light distribution.

New Sysop Training Programme will tackle the Weak Links in Cyber Defence

■ 1,015 cyber-attacks were recorded in 2015 – an increase of 15% over 2014ⱡ

■ Over 95% of IT security incidents involve human error*

■ Sysop’s ‘new programme, new approach’ – focuses on the people and processes that underpin technology’s cyber defences

■ Free seminars running on 4th and 5th February to launch the programme

■ Courses aligned with ITIL®, IT service management standards.

1,015 cyber-attacks were recorded in 2015ⱡ – an increase of 15% over 2014. Now, IT educator Sysop (www.sysop.co.uk) is launching a new training programme designed to

tackle the weak links in business and government’s cyber defences that have still to be addressed – people and process. “95% of security incidents involve human error*. Resisting, responding to and recovering from cyber-attacks depends on the resilience of people and processes as much as technology” say Sysop, who will be promoting the new RESILIA™

cyber defence courses with two free launch seminars in Manchester (on 4th February) and London (on 5th February), to include cyber incident simulations.

Commenting on the need for the new programme, Sysop director of professional services Adam Sawle says, “Cyber is an IT space, and IT directors look for technical solutions to provide additional security – but they often give less thought to how their underpinning people and processes support that.”

National Flexible’s Grab Bag Grabs AttentionNational Flexible had several new packaging formats on show at the Packaging Innovations Exhibition but were surprised when most visitors simply wanted to talk about the new flowwrap grab bag. It was undoubtedly the star of the show.

Originally developed for flowwrapping of high quality sandwiches, a market segment estimated at some £3.5 billion per annum. Visitors to the stand considered the use of the flowwrapped grab bag in suitable for many other packaging applications.

They perceived the grab bag real

benefits were the lower cost of the bag compared to conventional bag packaging (particularly by hand) allied to the unique structure of the pack and the various formats in which is can be used.

The pack is formed using standard flow wrapping machinery with few modifications. It is essentially film on the reel which dramatically reduces

the labour costs associated with packing by hand, whilst also improving manufacturing efficiencies at speeds of up to 30 packs per minute.

Having already won a Starpack Award for a paper laminate with a registered window on a Tesco Finest pack, National Flexible can

now tailor the laminate to variable structures to create the perfect Grab bag pack.

For more detail, please contact Sales and Marketing Director Mark Thompson at National Flexible on: +44 (0)1274 685566 or email to: [email protected].

Elfab announce its latest Buckling Pin Pressure Relief RangeWith over 80 years’ experience leading the industry in pressure management innovation, Elfab have expanded upon their range of technically superior rupture discs and explosion vents with the introduction of Buckling Pin Relief Valves (BPRVs). This latest partnership further enhances Elfab’s pressure relief options for applications within safety critical process environments.

There are two non-reclosing primary pressure relief devices, rupture pins and rupture discs, both offering a range of advantages dependent on specific pressure relief applications and conditions. Having both technologies under its pressure intelligence brand better positions Elfab to service its global customer base in providing the most cost-effective, safety critical pressure relief solution. The BPRV is a unique product that offers an accurate and reliable means of pressure relief calibration, whilst also enabling resetting without the need for the valve to be isolated from the process.

Each Buckling Pin is uniquely designed and manufactured under the highest quality standards to meet customer’s individual applications. Unlike other forms of pressure relief devices, the critical component (the pin) is located externally and isolated from the process. At a set pressure the pin buckles instantaneously allowing the pressure to be released. With two simple states (straight or buckled), after functioning the pin is the only element that needs

replacing, avoiding human error occurrences due to ease of installation while benefiting from low replacement costs.

For more than 85 years, workwear from F. Engel™ has been selected by customers from all over Europe as the first choice for all-round protection and maximum comfort no matter what a work situation may demand.

Founded in 1927 by Carl J. Engel Senior and now 4th generation family-owned, the company has 850 employees based at its Headquarters in Norgesvej, Denmark and 2 factories in Lithuania. Since it first began, with the importing of denim from the U.S. as a hard wearing fabric, the company’s aims have always been the same – to provide superior quality, value for money workwear designed for a perfect, flexible fit and to give long lasting, reliable service.

The original fabric was called Bull Denim which was made from 100% cotton. Over the years, the materials and manufacturing processes have been continually developed to incorporate many new practical and beneficial design details with the versatility of the fabric improved by adding the yarn combination of polyester and cotton.

New colours have been introduced and many businesses are now recognized by the specific colour combination and design of their Engel corporate workwear where not

only is it valued for its practical uses but also as a significant part of a company's professional statement.

Development is an ongoing process as new smart colour combinations and materials are continuously created and tested, with a constant emphasis on product quality, innovation, flexibility and environmental awareness.

The company has an impressive seven collections (along with a large range of accessories), all of which are ‘tailor-made’ for a wide range of industries including manufacturing, offshore, building & construction and the commercial sector. Each item of clothing is designed to be a perfect, comfortable fit whilst giving maximum freedom of movement and reliability, and all are fully certified to EN ISO 20471:2013 standard.

As an example, one of the main brand names under the F. Engel banner is ‘Combat’; geared to cope with any season and designed for action, this durable and stylish, uni-coloured collection has contrasting and reflective piping for greater visibility on jackets and trousers, many of which are made from 100% cotton. Almost all the trousers feature such useful detail as ruler-pockets, hammer

straps and mobile phone pockets, whilst the leg-length can be extended an extra 4-6cm if required. Other names to look out for, each with their own unique benefits, include ‘Galaxy’ and ‘Work Zone’ and the ‘Light’ range for warmer weather.

There are two policies which the company considers to be of very special importance. One is that advice is freely offered to firms and organisations within every relevant industry on the most effective ways by which they can comfortably protect their personnel; the other is to be in constant touch with its customers and end-users to ensure that all products are designed and manufactured with the aim of allowing them to do their work as efficiently as possible. The company is continually researching and gaining new and helpful ideas, from the locker room, to closely examining and testing all practical aspects of wearing and using its garments to maximum effect.

Sentinel upgrades vehicle Radar SystemFor many years, Sentinel Systems’ Auto-braking Radar System has helped commercial vehicles across the UK to safely reverse without presenting a threat to surrounding pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles.

With manufacturing technology rapidly developing, Sentinel has adapted this established system to utilise new and advanced components that enhances the performance of the system whilst continuing to offer an accurate and reliable auto-braking device for commercial vehicles.

The company has been developing its patented Auto-braking Radar System over many years to produce an innovative reversing aid that can prevent collisions with third party vehicle and properties as well

as pedestrians and cyclists, whilst protecting the vehicle itself from any damage. Having the system installed not only encourages responsible driving but could potentially save fleet operators a significant amount of money in insurance claims and vehicle or property damage repairs.

The high-spec system is discreetly installed at the rear of the vehicle to detect obstructions and their distance from the vehicle whilst it is reversing, and automatically

applying the brakes if it becomes too close. Like standard reversing aids, the system also audibly warns the driver of any obstructions within a certain distance from the rear of the vehicle to allow them to take caution when reversing.

To prevent unnecessary and potentially dangerous false alarms, the auto-braking radar detection is only activated when the vehicle is in reverse. This also ensures that the normal operational activity of the vehicle is not restricted. Once any obstructions or hazards are removed from the detection zone, the system will automatically reset itself to allow the vehicle to resume its manoeuvre.

Spectrometers News

New SPECTRO XEPOS spectrometers redefine ED-XRF with exceptional new levels of elemental analysis performanceSPECTRO Analytical Instruments recently announced its new line of SPECTRO XEPOS spectrometers, representing a quantum leap in energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) technology and providing breakthrough advances in the multi-elemental analysis of major, minor, and trace element concentrations.

New developments in excitation and detection introduced with the new SPECTRO XEPOS ED-XRF spectrometers deliver outstanding sensitivity and detection limits and yield remarkable gains in precision and accuracy. The analysers excel at critical tasks from rapid screening elemental analysis for environmental and waste sampling to demanding applications in research, academia, and geological science. They support precise product quality control at-line for a variety of applications such as chemical and petrochemical production, and the manufacture of cement, cosmetics, food, pharmaceuticals, and more.

The new line of SPECTRO XEPOS spectrometers features:Spectacular sensitivity – Innovations in adaptive excitation plus tube and detector technologies that dramatically improve sensitivity – often by 10x or more – to boost precision, realise significantly lower detection levels, and deliver a fast and accurate analysis of a wide range of elements, from sodium to uranium. Enhanced with new high-count detector and tube designs, new sensitivity, and minimised backgrounds, the new analysers’ proprietary adaptive excitation technology enables exceptionally low limits of detection (LODs) for a wide range of elements.Unparalleled precision – Unlike most ED-XRF elemental analysers, the X-ray tubes in SPECTRO XEPOS spectrometers remain powered on between measurements to prevent on/off variations from affecting readings. This ensures long-term stability, realises an exceptionally high degree of precision in elemental analysis – up to 3x better than before, and delivers substantially improved analytical accuracy for concentrations from trace elements to major components.Faster measurements – For operators who require speed more than utmost precision, SPECTRO XEPOS analysers can dramatically

cut measurement times, while still maintaining precision levels comparable to traditional ED-XRF spectrometers. The system’s high speed helps to achieve analyses of most samples within a few minutes.

Redesigned operating software provides proven ease and power, while the unique new TurboQuant II software quickly and accurately analyses practically any unknown liquid, powder, or solid sample. In addition, the new SPECTRO XEPOS spectrometers exhibit a significantly lower cost of ownership than wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) spectrometers – thus delivering WD performance at an ED price for many applications.

Optional AMECARE M2M (machine-to-machine) support extends the new

analysers’ self-diagnostic functions with proactive alerts, backed up by direct connection with a remote SPECTRO service expert’s PC.

The new line of SPECTRO XEPOS ED-XRF spectrometers is available immediately from SPECTRO Analytical Instruments. Four advanced versions are available, enabling users to prioritise their selection according to measurement speed, ultimate precision, or groups of targeted elements in specific matrices.
