This is the first time that Engineers are being felicitated and awards being given to

engineers for doing exemplary work in their respective fields. Supreme Infrastructure

India Ltd has thought of such presentation and hired Economic Research India Pvt Ltd

as Consultant to organize the event.

Applications were invited from various industries and academic

institutes. Several engineers, faculties and students responded. There

was tremendous response. Some infrastructure applications got some

categories rather than all. The awards are declared accordingly.

Respected and experienced faculties from various institutes and

organizations were invited to be on the jury for selection of Awardees. The

jury did a fantastic judgmental work and after considering the average of

several markings, the ranks were decided.

The awardees deserve a pat on the back. Of course there are few who

could not reach the expected level. For them, keep up the good work.

The Award concept was a tremendous achievement and response equally encouraging.

VJTI, Mumbai

Dr. Mangalvedekar is Professor and Head of Elec. Engg. Dept, at VJTI,

since 1986. He has taught about thirty subjects in electrical

engineering. Before joining academics, he was in industry, for almost ten years,

in firms like Asian Paints and Voltas. At present, he is guiding seven students

for PhD and more than seventy students for M. Tech.

At the Institute, he has implemented several projects sponsored by industry, like:

'Development of High Voltage Laboratory' for Siemens and 'Electro Magnetic Lab'

for BARC. Prof Mangalvedekar has done Consultancy Assignments with Industry: viz: ‘Evaluation

of 2.4 Million Voltage Impulse Generator’ procured by Tarapur Transformers Ltd. Wada, Thane. The

assignment involved visiting M/s. High Voltage Test Systems - Mulhouse, France.

He has also organized several Seminars and workshops. E.g. 'Reactive Power Control' for Tata

Power- IEE. More to his credit: -International Journal Publications: Collaborated with IIT-Bombay

and Electric Machines & Power, USA.

Prof Mangalvedekar is also active in students- and academia-related extra-curricular activities.

Prof Santanu was the topper in his BE degree exam, at Calcutta University.

He started his academic career as a Lecturer at BESU, Calcutta, in 1995.

He has written many books and one of them, coauthored; 'Additive Cellular

Automata' was published by the IEEE Computer Society Press, USA. One text

book written by him, 'Compiler Design', is translated in Chinese. Dr. Santanu

has delivered invited tutorial talks in premier conferences like International

Conferences on VSLI Design - (Very Large Scale Integration Design) - etc.

Dr. Santanu has published more than 150 research papers in international

journals and conferences. He has successfully guided and is guiding many PhD

research scholars. He has also contributed to industry. He has successfully handled a number

of projects sponsored either by Government or by Private agencies, having impact on VLSI

Design. Another project; 'Development of CAD Tools For Identification Of Logical Equivalence Of

Library Elements And Identification Of False Paths In A Switch Level Net Work' was sponsored

by Motorola India Electronics Ltd, Bangalore.

Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering

IIT, Kharagpur

Indranil has done MS, by Research in Microelectronics and VLSI design,

from IIT, Kharagpur and is pursuing PhD there.

He has published 12 international research papers in various journals and

conferences. He has won three best research paper awards in three different

conferences. In 2010 he had won cadence design contest in the Masters

category. He is associated in the Special Manpower Development Programme

(SMDP) sponsored by MCIT, New Delhi since June 2006 as a project assistant.

Indranil has been awarded best research paper three times in different

conferences. He has been the winner of Cadence Design Contest in 2010 and among top five

projects in 2011. Currently he is working on the 'Design and Development of Reconfigurable

Radio for Telemedicine Assisted Biomedical System'. One company has already contacted him

to take his work for their product development.

Indranil has interest in sport. He was selected for Inter-IIT football teams for two consecutive

years; 2010 and 2011.

PPrroojjeecctt:: Four- Laning of Bijapur- Hungund Section of NH 13. Length: 97 km

The project was taken up for 4-laning - from 2 lanes - of the highway, from

102 km to 202 km on the NH 13 in the state of Karnataka. It was executed

under NHDP Phase III, on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer

(DBFOT) basis.

The section details are impressive in that it is designed for max speed 100

km/hr. Also, it has15 major junctions, 34 minor junctions, 86 pipe culverts

and 21 box culverts, 36 bus bays, 2 toll plazas etc in a total length of 97

meters. This shows the extent of construction, variation and coordination

required during execution.

The project was completed in 11 months 6 days. It was far ahead of schedule. It is a sound

achievement

The Mumbai High field, located in the Arabian Sea about 160 km west of the

Mumbai coast is India's largest offshore oil and gas field. The project

consisted of - mainly: 1 no Process Platform with all the major facilities for oil, gas

and water separation; 150 men Living Quarters Platform along with required

utilities.

To optimize the project delivery, innovations were required. The basic

engineering and detailed engineering phases were combined. This seamless

integration was done by generating early the key process engineering activities

/ deliverables, e.g. philosophy of documents, Process simulation studies,

Process Flow Diagrams, Line sizing, Equipment sizing, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams

(P&ID s), etc.

The innovation and sustainable practices were made possible under the theme-"ONE TEAM, ONE

PROJECT". The MHN produced First Oil within 3 years.

The coal based power plant was executed with good time saving.

The project was completed in 33 months, earlier than the CEA-

specified duration; 41 months, for a 500 MW unit. The approach

involved:

� Bigger activities were broken down to increase identification of the

parallel activities.

PPaanneell eerreeccttiioonn iinn PPoowweerr HHoouussee:: Instead of shifting the HT and LT panels

to store and then to re-shift them to TG building, the panels were directly

unloaded in TG building and erected. This saved 20 days.

TT&&PP uuttiilliizzaattiioonn:: Instead of leaving the T&P to package owners. The activities were monitored by

dedicated persons of planning for efficient and priority based utilization.

Centrally managed T&P ensured timely availability of erection machines.

BBaacckk--uupp ppoowweerr:: Back-up power was provided for illumination throughout night for work in

emergency.

Birahi Ganga Hydroelectric Project

Sushil Kumar's Engineering Vision helped this project. Articulating this vision,

he went ahead and enhanced the capacity of project from 4.8 MW to 7.2 MW.

Sushil Kumar helped the material department in arranging the materials at site

before time. This resulted in time saving. And consequently: cost saving.

During construction phase of Power House, it was decided to provide steel

structure above ground level, which saved time and money in civil works. By

implementing this idea nearly one year time was saved.

His concept helped to overcome the disaster by flood in year 2010, by successfully cutting the

mountain to divert the river and concreting the area damaged. There was further strengthening

by putting steel liner all along the bottom outlet. This work was completed in 21 days. A short

time for the project.

Protection work on the hill behind Power House and river training works was done on both banks

of Birahi River in front and in the vicinity of power house. This was to ensure habitat stability.

PPrroojjeecctt:: Construction of New Integrated Modular Terminal Building at Indore Airport

The New Integrated Terminal Building is designed for peak hour

handling capacity of 700 passengers including 200 international

passengers. It is a unique blend of glass and steel structure, with an area

of 18000 sqm, meeting the world class norms.

The MS Project Programme for work was monitored in the monthly

project review meetings. The programme was revised as per the site

conditions. The critical activities were closely monitored to control the overall completion of the

project. Thus time was saved. Also, the quantities of various items were jointly worked out by

the Contractors' engineers and the Departmental engineers. This ensured that the material was

delivered at site well in time, so that the progress of work did not suffer.

A true scale model was used during construction. The structural steel roofing, skylight glazing and

roofing sheet were detachable so that the interior view could be seen. This was of great help for

clarity to supervising engineers during actual execution of work, resulting in time saving.

The design of the building; Chemical House was done in a special way. As per client

requirement, this building was to have four bays. Each bay width was to be 24 m. That

meant that the total bay width would be 96 m. The length of the bay was 150m.

While detail designing, the building size was optimized by reducing one bay to 15m width. This

helped to save space in the plot. That saved cost of the project.

The Roof monitors for chemical house were replaced with gravent design for exhaust system.

This resulted in cost saving.

For the Carbonate & Bi-carbonate handling system in the project as per the scheme proposed

by the Client, the requirement was to have the conveying facility with bag slitting machine. The

scheme was redesigned with 1 tonne bag handling. The conveying system was removed which

saved cost.

These cooling towers are the tallest cooling towers in the world measuring a height of 202

m, beating the existing record of 200 m. There are two identical cooling towers. While one

tower is complete in all respects, the second one is 75% complete.

The cooling tower had to be designed to a height of 202 m, with a top diameter of 90 m. Initially,

it was thought to complete the construction by the traditional method of providing one tower

crane at the center of cooling tower. But as the construction picked up, this was proving

inadequate, considering the quantum of concreting involved at higher elevations.

It was decided to have mechanization of construction as an alternative, for transportation of men,

material and concreting. It was decided to have hydraulic bridges placed inside the cooling

tower for transportation of men, material and concreting, in addition to the tower crane normally

used for construction. The hydraulic bridges have not been used by any other agency in India.

This approach also saved time.

The railway track was constructed on a 12 metre high soil

embankment. The embankment was confined from both sides by two

retaining walls. The total width of embankment was 15m. The

embankment soil consisted of pure sandy soil.

To create the underpass, precast boxes were used and were inserted

through soil using the box pushing technique. It was necessary to remove

the retaining wall on both sides of the embankment to facilitate the box

pushing. The box was slowly pushed inside the soil by gradually removing

soil which was encountered at the face of hollow box. The box was taken

up to the exit side. After reaching the other side of the wall, the other side of the wall was

dismantled and box was pushed further. The entire process facilitated in creating an underpass

below the rail embankment.

It was an achievement that no disruption of train had occurred during this entire process of nail

driving and wall dismantling. This amounted to good cost saving.

The project was of laying of 30" diameter pipe for GSPL under river Mahi in

Gujarat. The length of the pipe was 1500 meter (approx.). This was

undertaken after detailed geotechnical analysis, planning and optimum design

analysis. The goal was to execute the project with 250 Ton Rig capacity.

There were many challenges: Larger length of the crossing, environmental

issues, rig capacity, unpredictable soil changes and gravel encounter. The

parameters were identified, documented and strategized early to enable to manage properly.

Detailed study and Design conclusion helped in the selection of right tools and materials which

gave positive results and saved on time and cost.

The job required a 450 ton rig. That rig had to be procured and, only after the delivery of that

450 ton rig, the project work would begin. The project had a 250 ton rig ready and available. So,

the project was planned, with optimum design and engineering, for the execution with 250 ton

rig. All required resources were planned and proper monitoring and controlling was executed.

The job was completed with the use of the 250 ton rig and the schedule was met. Thus there

was time saving of period for 450 ton rig delivery.

The project was completed successfully by achieving synchronization of unit-1&2 in

November 2011 and April 2012 respectively.

As a grass root project, starting from resources development, facilities establishment, erection to

commissioning of the power plant, the project was completed on time. Best practices and latest

technologies were introduced in construction work; viz. Erection of Boiler Drum and Generator Stator

by Strand Jack method, using Tower Crane in Boiler erection activities, erection of various coils using

innovated monorail arrangement in Boiler, Chimney construction with the help of Slip form etc.

One of the greatest achievements is the standard maintained in Quality and Safety.

The following were achieved in safety performance.

The project confronted a special geological aspect. The complete

Power House was planned to be built on filled up soil. Hence the

settlement was a possibility and design had to be innovative to take

care of this parameter.

The ground level was 52 m, the canal bed level was 75 m and turbine

centre line was at 71.6 m. To overcome these locations parameters,

special design was to be done. The ground level for the two turbine

units was quite different, but, for the operational facility, the centre

line of the two turbines was kept at the same level. Due to geological

conditions, it was difficult to provide the foundation raft for both the

turbine units.

An innovative design was adopted. A special construction joint was designed to take care of this

situation and to avoid the different settlement, to the power House.

The project was civil and structural works for Line I & II of 4800

TPD Cement Plant and for 40 MW & 20 MW Power Plants. This

project involved construction of a cement plant of Capacity 4800

TPD. The project also involved construction of Preheater of height 125

m and Silos. During the project, 19.57 million man hours were

completed without any fatalities.

The Certificate of appreciation has been awarded by National Safety

Council of India, 2010 The Certificate of appreciation has been also

awarded by UNEP during World Environment Day, 2012 and Safe Site

Certificate at 4th CIDC Vishvakrama Awards 2012.

There has been necessary safety training programs that was conducted for all workforce. Besides

seminars and various types of competitions were conducted to create safety awareness.

Under the integrated Development of Sewerage System, Navi Mumbai

Corporation had come up with the concept of Sewage Treatment Plant with

innovative technology to save land area, energy and produce reusable water. This

project is as per that concept.

The project has achieved the final effluent treatment quality, in terms of BOD, etc

fulfilling the Indian effluent discharge standards. The quality also fulfils the

international standards for non-potable reuse. The plant uses modified SBR

Technology for the treatment of sewage. The whole plant is operated by using automated

technology (PLC/SCADA). The plant also utilizes solar and wind energy. This renewable energy

is used for outdoor plant lighting.

The treated water can be reused in industry and thus the pressure on natural water is reduced.

This way, a sustainable solution is offered to the industry and municipalities.

This is the first and the largest grid-connected Megawatt-scale Solar

Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plant in Maharashtra. Sustainable, renewable sources

of energy will play an important role in meeting energy demand in future. Tata Power

is building a strong green power portfolio and this power plant is a part of it.

One more sustainability factor was demonstrated at this project in that the part of

power requirement during construction, the site area lighting and site office lighting

was achieved using Solar Powered Inverter & Battery Bank. The plant is designed

not only to generate power by harnessing the energy from the sun, but it will also

create the awareness about:

1. The threat from Climate Change.

2. Solar power

3. Renewable energy sources

4. Carbon emission reduction.

structure for Sikkim Airport is unique: It is the world's tallest reinforced soil strucutre, 75m high,

The project comprises unique identification features. The

Project was completed in good schedule. Throughout the

project execution there was nil accident report. The Project was

completed within the approved cost. The optimum utilization of

resources has been done.

The Zone has received Safety and Quality Award from Institution of

Engineers (India). The terminal can handle 150 passengers at a

time.

A terminal building with a capacity to accommodate 200

passengers will also be ready. Two runways measuring 1,740 metres and 1,350 metres are being

built apart from a taxi way peripheral road and a boundary wall which has already been

completed.

The project was to construct Flyover opposite Panvel Bus stand on

old Mumbai- Pune National Highway (NH4), from Km 113/700

to Km 111/200 passing through Panvel town, about 2.5 km.

This is a Four Lane flyover with two lanes each for up and down traffic.

The total width of flyover is 17.2 m. The two additional ramps having

5.5 m wide carriage way, one on either side, start at New Panvel

junction and touch down at approximately 120 m beyond Ambedkar

junction. Four - Lane Flyover has been constructed in single pier /

foundation with precast segmental continuous construction. The elevated structure eliminates

nine junctions.

The Construction methodology adopted is unique. The entire viaduct was constructed one and

quarter span continuous on support. Pre-stressing couplers have been avoided in this structure

due to their vulnerability. Expansion Joints have been provided up to 220m.

climates and terrains in India, such as, the high-altitude Siachen

Glacier, the Ladakh region and remote areas of the North-East. The

highly decorated General's innovative skills and methods of

planning and executing projects, including in the aftermath of the

earthquake in Sikkim, earned the Border Roads Organisation

international repute as the 'Best Under Extremes'. Lt. Gen. Ravi

Shankar's tenure at Border Roads is laudable on several counts that include the implementation

of robust engineering practices and overseeing structural changes in the organisation to meet

the growing demands of both the security and infrastructure of India.

Ltd and President of the Engineering, Construction & Contracts

division of the company. After completing his B. Tech from IIT-

been contributing to the growth of the division in various roles and

capacities. He has been responsible for some of the most

innovative and cost-saving designs for infrastructure projects in
