AUTRY DRAFTING STUDENTS PLACE IN NATIONAL COMPETITIONENID, Okla. Seven Autry students of the drafting program placed in the 2015 American Design Drafting National Contest.

Autry students placed in four categories: Shane Morrison first place and Winston Krittenbrink second place in Beginning Technical Illustration Mechanical; Connor Snapp second place in Beginning Architectural Presentation; J.T. Pruitt second place and Jazmin Soria third place in Advanced Technical Illustration Mechanical; and, Jake Blanton second place and Taylor Voelzke third place in Advanced Architectural Presentation.

“I am very proud of the hard work my students put into their entries,” Jon Jones, drafting instructor said. “They have learned to ensure their work is up to real world standards. I was really impressed with the quality of their work.”

According to ADDA, The purpose of the contest is to encourage excellence in effort and discipline, and to give recognition to outstanding students and design/drafting programs. The contest consisted of a series of problems from which the students chose one, and then solved using drafting software.

The students used programs SolidWorks and Chief Architect to create the mechanical drawings and architectural renderings they entered in the contest. In addition to this software, students in the drafting program at Autry will also be proficient in Autocad and Revit by the time they graduate.

Shane Morrison, as a first place winner, received a $100 prize and is invited to ADDA’s annual conference in Kansas City, Missouri, in March to be recognized for his accomplishment.

“I worked for an entire week on this project,” Morrison said. “At one point, I wanted to quit, but Mr. Jones encouraged me to not give up. So, I kept trying and was really surprised that I somehow got first place.”

His entry was an exploded isometric drawing of a tool post holder. An exploded isometric is an item expanded and spread out to show all its parts in 3D form.

“My students will be able to take these skills when they graduate and work in any kind of machine shop, industrial facility or manufacturing facility, such as, GEFCO or Central Machine and Tool,” Jones said.
