Baby Bottle Campaign

Thank you for participating in our Baby Bottle Campaign! We are excited that you are supporting A Woman’s Concern – Your Options Medical through this event.

Do you have a heart for the Unborn? How should Christians respond to women and couples facing unplanned pregnancies? For 26 years A Woman’s Concern – Your Options Medical has answered that question by providing life-affirming pregnancy confirmation services to women and couples facing an unplanned pregnancy, especially those considering abortion due to a lack of information and support. Our confidential and non-judgmental services include pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, options counseling, parenting classes, post abortion counseling and ongoing emotional and material support all at no cost. We strive to provide our clients with truthful information concerning their preborn child and hope by so doing that they will recognize the child in their womb is a beautiful gift from the Lord. With our continuing support through their pregnancy and beyond, we strive to provide the emotional and material support they need. We believe every child has a special purpose in this life. For more information visit us at lyopartners.org.

Our church will be participating in a Baby Bottle Campaign to support A Woman’s Concern – Your Options Medical. Next week individuals and families will have the opportunity to respond to the issue of Life. We will be handing out Baby Bottles or a donation envelope for you to take home, fill with cash, checks, and change and bring them back to the church. Our financial support will help to make these services available free of cost to those who are in need of support and guidance in the fight for life! If you decide to give a donation by check, please make the check-out to A Woman’s Concern.

Bottles will be giving out on Sunday May 13. Please return your full baby bottles or your donation envelope to the church on Sunday, June 17. If you decide to give a donation by check, please make the check-out to A Woman’s Concern. Thank You!!

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s Gospel follows immediately after the Gospel proclaimed last week, in which Jesus taught that he was the vine and that his disciples were the branches. In the example of the vine and the branches, we learned that our union with Jesus will lead to fruitful service. Today’s reading extends this teaching to describe the kind of service that Christians are called upon to offer to others.

When John wrote this Gospel, his community was influenced by a set of religious beliefs called Gnosticism. It appears that one of John’s intentions was to distinguish Christian belief from the beliefs held by the Gnostics. Evidence of this can be found in today’s Gospel.

One of the tenets of Gnostic teaching was the importance of knowledge, or gnosis, as the determining aspect of faith. We read today’s Gospel as a response to this teaching. In John’s Gospel, we hear Jesus affirm that he is known by the Father and that his disciples will know the Father by knowing Jesus. In this passage, however, Jesus reminds his disciples that this knowledge is to be expressed in love. Those who know Jesus well—and Jesus says that his disciples do know him—will love one another. Knowledge leads to love, which leads to action. John reminds his community that Jesus taught that love is the sign of a true disciple and, thus, a true Christian. Even more, a true disciple shows a particular kind of love, sacrificial love.

In the Greek, there are two words for love that are used in this passage. The first is agape. The second is philia. The first word is most often used to describe love for other persons and for God. It is understood as the highest and most perfect kind of love. The second word is used to describe the affection of friendship. In this context, John appears to use these words as synonyms. The root of the Greek word for friend comes from this second term for love, philia. By using this word, Jesus transforms the terms of his relationship with his disciples and redefines for them their relationship with God. In the Hebrew Scriptures, faith in God made one a servant of God.

Here Jesus teaches that his relationship to his disciples is based on friendship, not servitude.

Another aspect of Gnostic belief taught that a believer was an elect person, chosen and set apart from the world. John reminds his community that Jesus also taught that a disciple is one who had been chosen—one who had been chosen by Jesus. To be chosen by Jesus, however, is not to be set apart from the world. Instead, to be chosen by Jesus is to be sent to serve the world as he did. The disciples of Jesus were chosen and were sent into the world to bear fruit by serving others, by sacrificing for others, in love.

This reading, like last week’s, is part of Jesus’ Last

The Sixth Sunday in Easter

Blessed Virgin Mary. May is a month of growth, when nature is reborn. This month normally belongs to the Easter season, between Easter and Pentecost. Many Catholics may be aware that May is consecrated to Mary, but it may be unclear why this month was selected for this particular distinction. Other months have more important feasts dedicated to Our Lady, such as August (Feast of the Assumption) and December (Feast of the Immaculate Conception). What is it about this month that makes it a fitting time to reflect on the Virgin Mary’s role in salvation and to honor her as the Mother of God?

Our Lady is centuries old, dating back at least 700 years. Blessed Pope Paul VI wrote an encyclical on the month of May, focusing on the Virgin Mary. He wrote that the piety of the faithful has long dedicated the month of May to the Mother of God. He stated in his encyclical,

associated with the particular season of the year. May is certainly known for its springtime beauty (at least in the Northern Hemisphere). It is associated with flowers and blossoms, with trees which spring back to life, and grass which sprouts. It brings to mind the idea of promise and hope, of new life. Blessed John Henry Newman offers various reasons why May in particular is dedicated to Our Lady in “and Devotions

rainy, cool month. However, it always remains a month of promise and hope, the prelude to summer, the season of light. It is in this sense that it represents Mary. She reflects the light of Christ.

May was connected with the beginning of new life. This ancient belief led to May being associated with the motherhood of Mother Earth and thus to motherhood in general. It is for this reason that Mother’s Day is celebrated in May in many countries. This connection between May and motherhood led Christians to adopt May as the month of our Lady, the Mother of God and our heavenly Mother. She brought life into the world by giving birth to her Son, Jesus, who brought about a new spring.

Faith Formation News

Last Sunday, April 29th, we celebrated with 17 children that made their First Holy

Communion. While the weather was a bit cold and dreary, the love and warmth of family, friends and community filled St. Anthony's

with joy and wonder as these children received Jesus in Communion for the first time! Please

keep them in your prayers.

This Sunday, May 6th, 13 more children will receive Jesus for the very first time in Holy Communion. Thank you so much to all the

families, Faith Formation team and parish for their love and support for these beautiful

children!

You are always in my prayers!
