startport in the Duisburg interior portThe laboratory for successful logistics start-ups

An innovation platform at the most important logistics location in EuropeIn the historic Werhahnmühle complex in Duisburg’s interior port, people are fast at work on the future of logistics. Duisburger Hafen founded the innovation platform startport in fall 2017. The location could not be better, as the Rhine-Ruhr region is number one in the logistics industry nationwide. The fourth industrial revolution (“Industry 4.0”) is changing value chains in both logistics and industry. Logistics has developed from a pure service industry to a major driver of the digital industry. At the moment there is hardly any industrial innovation that does not have direct contact with logistics and digitalization. The Internet of Things and Services, big data, or autonomous vehicles are witnessing a digital revolution in the logistics industry.

A nucleus for the development of the value chains of the futureThe innovation platform startport is the nucleus and laboratory for future value chains in logistics. An entrepreneurial spirit and practical innovation are the most important components for the logistics of the future. The startport project is an innovation driver at the interfaces of mobility, logistics, and industry.

The concept in a nutshell:Around 850 square meters are available for the think tanks on two floors. The special thing about the concept: exclusive partners like RAG-Stiftung, Borussia Dortmund, Initiativkreis Ruhr, Klöckner & Co, Evonik, and Wirtschaftsbetriebe Duisburg are taking the young companies under their wings. The partners also send their own project teams to the startport spaces. A creative and constructive collaboration is to result in innovations that benefit both sides.

Market-ready products as a goalWithin the scope of a one-year accelerator program, the start-ups are supported in their work and the first customers are to be acquired through market-ready products. Professional support is provided by an on-site team that establishes initial contacts and has direct access to an international network of potential customers or project partners from industry and logistics. The locational advantage is obvious: hundreds of companies from industry and logistics are already located in the region, looking for answers to the challenges of digitalization.

How can one get a place within the startport program? The first step is an application via the website: start-ups can apply for a place in the startport program via www.startport.net.The companies are selected by a jury. In a pitch, it is determined whether their ideas and concepts convince the jurors. For one year, companies can use the infrastructure and workshop offerings of startport and develop their ideas into a sustainable business model. After the end of the year, duisport and its exclusive partners have the opportunity to invest in the subsidized start-up. The founding teams are then part of the alumni network and can, for example, use the startport space as regular tenants. Currently 35 start-ups are taking advantage of the startport’s program.

ASDRO

The company ASDRO uses drone technology to measure and inspect surfaces from the air and use sensors to take a look into the ground. Within a short period of time and with great precision, areas, buildings, and structures can be measured and visualized with centimeter accuracy. In particular, ASDRO is specialized in the use of magnetic field sensors. In the future, the noise reduction of the drone and sensors will be further optimized to increase the resolution of smaller objects. A corrective algorithm is applied that uses both drone data and magnetometer data. This also makes it possible to detect the magnetic imprint in the earth’s magnetic field at a greater distance from the object. In the future, several drones will fly simultaneously and autonomously. Further geophysical measuring methods such as georadar and electromagnetics will be developed for the drone.

Psoido

Psoido safely decouples pseudonymous data to ensure the online anonymity of data. Psoido makes the trustworthy sharing of data possible, which allows for new business models and added value between companies. The current dilemma: pseudonymous data allows for differentiated analysis, but always reveals its origin. Anonymous data can prevent the latter, but this does not allow for differentiated data analysis.Psoido decouples the original identity and the virtual ID during the registration of data in order to protect one’s own know-how in shared data pools and still allow for differentiated data analysis.

frachtklub

frachtklub has developed an online shop for freight forwarders that can be easily integrated into the website and processes of forwarding companies. With frachtklub’s white label solution, freight forwarders can enable their customers to inquire about shipments via the freight forwarding website and book them directly online.Leif-Hermann Lühmann came up with the idea for the company as a result of his many years of work in the logistics sector. In his parents’ business and at DB Schenker, Leif observed that daily price inquiries to forwarding agents are still made by e-mail, telephone, or fax. With frachtklub these daily price inquiries are automatically answered via an online shop and transports can be booked. In addition to the time savings, frachtklub opens up a further sales channel for freight forwarders to reach new customers with an online affinity, increase sales, and simultaneously reduce sales costs.

GlobalTech

GlobalTech can measure the axle load of trucks using its proprietary sensors. With their solution, the Finnish start-up wants to counter the overloading of trucks, because overloading is a major safety risk and can be expensive. The sensors can be retrofitted to trucks that are already in operation. In addition to a general warning in case of overloading, a further effect is the real-time transmission of the train weight: in this way the loading and unloading of a truck can be monitored at any time.

idea-ly

idea-ly enables companies to profitably use innovative ideas and constructive suggestions from their employees, partners, or customers. idea-ly’s idea management goes beyond the collection and processing of ideas: idea generators and companies can see at any time what the processing status of an idea is, similar to tracking a parcel delivery.Once the idea has been looked at and evaluated, there is feedback for the idea provider – idea-ly, for example, wants to motivate employees to get involved and make ideas visible.

limbiq

The start-up limbiq records international flows of goods along the entire supply chain and maps them transparently and across platforms. The cloud-based software from limbiq integrates all relevant partners – from suppliers and logistics service providers to end consumers from industry and trade.“Anyone who orders a book via Amazon immediately receives an order confirmation by e-mail with a tracking link. On the other hand, companies that order or deliver goods with an enormous value are rarely given the opportunity to track their shipments. With limbiq we want to change that,” emphasizes Arne Oltmann, one of the founders.limbiq achieves this with an online platform that presents all the information from the order to goods receipt clearly and in real time in one place for all those involved – and thus replaces e-mail, telephone, and fax as a means of communication.

Mister Postman

Mister Postman offers a solution for parcel services to bridge the last mile, so-to-speak. With the help of an app, packages are to be picked up by a free “postman” on one of his or her everyday routes from packing stations and parcel shops and delivered to the end consumer on the desired date. The last-mile delivery solution is so far unique in Germany – the app gives communities in a district the opportunity to organize themselves.Anyone can become a “Postman” with the app or enter a desired delivery date for their parcel. With his approach, Mister Postman wants people to integrate the delivery of packages into their everyday life, e.g. on the way to work. The long-term goal is that in the future packages are delivered to central warehouses of the individual CEP (courier-express-parcel) service providers and that Mister Postman will be able to take care of all last mile deliveries. The focus is on ecological advantages and the relief of inner city traffic. There are clearly also economic advantages: the last mile is so far the most expensive part of the supply chain.

OmniOpti

OmniOpti has developed an algorithm that performs multidimensional route optimization for road freight traffic. Thanks to its algorithm, the Slovenian start-up achieves better results with more alternative routes than existing solutions on the market. Transporters can achieve time and fuel savings of up to 40%.Route optimization for vehicles represents a complex mathematical problem. As a mathematician, Martin, the founder of OmniOpti, has already gained experience in IT, logistics, and route optimization. There he found out that there is still great potential for improvement.OmniOpti currently offers route optimization for road transport, but the start-up also intends to develop the fields of intralogistics and sea and air transport.

PARKLAB

The start-up PARKLAB, located at startport, offers the company and local authorities digital parking solutions and intelligent parking space management. With their own developed parking space sensors, PARKLAB can determine in public and private parking areas whether and how long parking spaces are occupied. The sensors process the collected information in real time. These are of interest to local authorities, companies, and motorists. Especially when parking offenders are to be identified.Using the app, which was developed in-house, drivers can find a free parking space at their destination, be navigated to it, and pay the parking fee via Paypal, ApplePay, etc. when leaving the parking lot. Thanks to the dashboard developed by PARKLAB, companies and local authorities can obtain a precise overview of the utilization of their own parking areas and manage them more efficiently, ecologically, and economically.“As drivers of a heavily trafficked area, we always despaired of finding a parking space,” say the founders Kadir, Luthan and Maximilian of PARKLAB. They would like to make conurbations like the Ruhr area more attractive through their solution.

poolynk

The Bad Pyrmont-based start-up poolynk has developed the “digital pallet slip” and thus digitalizes the management of load carriers along the entire supply chain. The problem: reusable pallets, boxes, or containers usually find their way back to their owners incompletely after the transport of goods. Out of 100 load carriers, only 95 load carriers are returned to companies, according to the start-up – this can mean considerable financial loss for many companies. The reason for this is the lack of transparency for the transfer of these load carriers – this is usually still done in paper form. To counteract this, poolynk has set up a cloud-based portal that enables every actor in a supply chain to digitally record the transfer of load carriers in an app. Companies receive a complete overview of their load carriers via a web portal or within already used merchandise management systems.

PRIOjet

PRIOjet Logistics is a digital platform for processing emergency logistics orders. Time-critical consignments, such as urgent and unplanned transports of, for example, production equipment or machine spare parts required at short notice, are to be delivered quickly, reliably, and safely to the place where they are needed. The founding team, made up of Christian, Rico, and Tianmi, wants to use PRIOjet to solve such logistics emergencies for companies, logistics agencies, logistics and customs service providers, as well as on-board couriers (OBC) at top speed and with high transparency. The founding idea came to Christian when he himself delivered worldwide transports as an on-board courier during his sabbatical. With PRIOjet he has founded a start-up that is supposed to map and accelerate all the processes of a complex transport with transparency and know-how using intelligent software. Companies, agencies, and couriers are thus supported with time-critical transports and can always see where their urgently needed parts are located.

Smart Inductive Solutions

The Duisburg-based start-up Smart Inductive Solutions (SIS) develops wireless charging solutions for cars and logistics vehicles via induction. While wireless charging is well known for mobile phones, it is not yet available for electric vehicles. The founders of SIS have already worked on the topic of “inductive charging” in their research work at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

As part of the TALAKO project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics, the start-up company is equipping taxis and taxi stands with inductive charging technology for a series of tests. With regard to other scenarios, SIS software can also offer other digital solutions, such as automated maintenance monitoring, vehicle reservations, or fleet management. Smart Inductive Solutions have designed their solution as a modular construction kit so that their system can be individually adapted to different vehicle types.

With its joining of the startport Accelerator, the start-up now wants to complete the development phase of its product and enter the pilot phase.

Synfioo

The start-up Synfioo, based in Potsdam and Duisburg, realizes the real-time monitoring of intermodal and global transports in its platform solution. In doing so, the start-up predicts answers for different companies to questions like: When will my goods arrive? What kinds of disturbances could occur along the way? Synfioo can identify disruptions, such as traffic jams or storms, for transportation by truck, rail, ship, and air by using various databases. On this basis, the companies are then given recommendations for action on how the transport can be pursued smoothly.

The goal of the start-up is to give users more transparency about their transports, to involve all relevant actors in their solution, and to provide them with information, thus allowing for an optimization of the supply chain.

TruPhysics

TruPhysics is a robotics start-up that uses its software to give intelligent robots a “brain”. After the start-up had developed its own robots, it wanted to give companies the opportunity to control various robot components centrally. Artificially intelligent software from TruPhysics aims to make it possible for non-programmers to teach and control robots – previous knowledge is not required. In addition to robotics, TruPhysics is active in another use case with the ARtour Assist app. The app offers step-by-step tutorials for assembling machines and enables employees to learn autonomously.
