VEnTIlATE?It is simple, the air we breatheis very important!The effect of not having good indoor air quality in the home is dramatic. The average person spends 90% of their time indoors and breathing in stale contaminated air can lead to health issues.

Dust MitesThe humidity levels within a property are directly linked to

the levels of house dust mites and dust mite allergens. By controlling the humidity within the home, dust

mites are less able to breed helping asthma sufferers to breathe more easily.

CondensationThe appearance of condensation on the inside of

windows is a frequent and annoying occurrence. The construction of more airtight homes leads to the reduction of natural ventilation and air infiltration within the property. If ventilation is not correctly

designed and installed the condensation levels could increase. Increased condensation levels can result

in damp patches on walls and peeling wallpaper. Ventilation is key to removing excess moisture from the

property for comfort and good health.

MouldProlonged high levels of humidityand condensation are the main cause of mould growth. Mould spores travel through the air and multiply in damp areas. 1 in 5 homes suffer from issues with mould. Mould is an allergen which can lead to respiratory issues.

Carpets could harbour dustmites, animal danderand harmful particles.

Cooking using a gas appliance emits nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. These can lead

to the increase of various respiratory and other health ailments.

The volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) released from paint fumes can have a serious effect on health when breathedfor long periods of time.

The IP Code (or International Protection Rating, sometimes also interpreted as Ingress Protection Rating) consists of the letters IP followed by two digits and an optional letter. It classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects and water in electrical enclosures.

IP RaTINgs aND BaTHROOm ZONEs

Zone InformationZone 0Inside the bath or shower. Fans cannot be installed into zone 0.

Zone 1The width of the bath or shower tray up to 2.25m above the floor level. Electrical items installed in this area must have an IP rating of IPx4 or higher.

Zone 2This zone extends to 0.6m around the bath or shower tray and 2.25m above the floor level.

30.000 hLong Life

LL-Long Life - The long life 30,000 label certifies that the unit is installed with long life bearings and these are guaranteed to operate for 30,000 hours continuously, without mechanical failure.

TM ES-Energy Saving - The ES label indicates that the appliances is fitted with an EC Brushless motor and provides high energy savings, thanks to the wide range of speed regulation options and significantly reduced energy consumption levels.

A-Automatic - The integral shutters positioned behind the front grille automatically open and close slowly when the unit is operated. The shutters are made from shockproof, anti-uV-treated plastic.

T-Timer – The unit is activated via a switch. When the switch is turned off the unit continues to operate for a period of between 3-20 minutes, depending on the timer setting. Current regulations state a minimum of 15 minute over run where there is no opening window.

PIR-Passive Infra Red - The unit activates when a persons presence is detected within the area (the sensor is located in an inclined position to increase sensitivity), and continues to operate during the person’s presence. When the person leaves the room, the unit will continue to run for between 3 -20 minutes, depending on the timer setting.

THCS-Humidity Control – This unit features a relative humidity sensor that is factory set at 60%. When relative humidity exceeds this level, the unit automatically starts up. This threshold setting can however be modified by the installer to 4 levels: 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90%. When the relative humidity drops below the setting the unit will continue to run for between 3 -20 minutes depending on the timer setting. The unit can also be overridden and operated via a switch if the relative humidity is below the threshold setting.

12V – This indicates that the unit is SElV and is supplied via a voltage transformer, available separately.

P-Pull Cord - The unit is operated via the integral pull cord.

TP-Timer Plus – The unit is equipped with an intelligent timer which includes variable delay start and fan overrun. The unit can also be set to automatically activate the fan for a pre set length of time at variable intervals up to every 24 hours.

Domestic Ventilation Compliance guideIn addition to the revised ADF, a separate guidance document has been produced covering installation, commissioning and on site testing of domestic ventilation systems. All ventilation systems (both natural and mechanical) shall be inspected and commissioned. For mechanical ventilation systems installed in new dwellings, air flow rates shall be measured on-site as part of the commissioning process.

Products Characteristics DatabaseThe Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) calculates the energy consumption and carbon emissions of each dwelling. To be entered into the SAP calculation, products must be tested at either BRE or an independent testing house and then added to the Products Characteristics Database (PCDB).

BackgroundVentilationandIntermittentExtractFansMechanical extract fans, selected by their performance depending on their location, must be positioned in all the “wet” rooms. Background ventilators, are required in all rooms sized by the number of bedrooms and occupancy.

IntermittentExtractstep 1 Calculate intermittent extract rates from Table 5.1A.step 2 The purge ventilation provision (windows) reference in ADF (Appendix B) can be

used for sanitary (w/c) rooms when security is not an issue.

BackgroundVentilatorsstep 1 Determine the total equivalent ventilator area - See Table A below for a dwelling with

any design air permeability. As an alternative, the guidance in Table B below may be followed for a dwelling designed to an air permeability leakier than (>) 5m3/(h.m2) at 50 Pa which recommends less ventilation provisions, but see the cautionary advice in paragraph 5.10.

preferably shared between several rooms.step 3 For dwellings which have a single exposed facade, or at least 70% of the equivalent area is designed to be on the same facade,

cross- ventilation is not possible, or is limited, and additional ventilation provisions are recommended. In this case background ventilators should be located at both high and low positions in the facade to provide enhanced single - sided ventilation. The total equivalent area as described in Steps 1 and 2 above should be provided at the high position(typically 1.7 m above floor level) for all dwelling types and all storey heights. In addition, ventilators having the same total equivalent area should be provided at least 1.0m below the high ventilators as shown in Diagram 2b. Single sided ventilation is most effective if the dwelling is designed so that the habitable rooms are on the exposed facade, and these rooms are no greater than 6m in depth.

ContinuousMechanicalsupplyandExtractVentilationwithHeatRecovery(MVHR)A continuous balanced mechanical central supply and extract system is to be positioned in loft or a cupboard space. An integral heat exchanger recovers a large percentage of heat energy that would have otherwise been lost. In employing this type of system, there is no need to install background ventilators in the dwelling.

step 1 For any design air permeability, determine the whole dwelling ventilation supply rate from Table 5.1B.

As an alternative where the designed air permeability is intended to be leakier than (>) 5m3/(h.m2) at 50 Pa, allow for infiltration for all dwelling types by subtracting from the whole dwelling ventilation supply rate from Table 5.1B: 0.04l/(s.m3) x gross internal volume of the dwelling heated space (m3), but see the cautionary advice in 5.10.

step 2 Calculate the whole dwelling extract rate at maximum operation by adding the individual room rates for ‘minimum high rate’ from Table 5.1A.
