Th ere are over ten ski centres in the section of the Alps that extends into Slovenia.

Each in its own way off ers a perfect experience of snowy pleasures. Th e main ad-

vantage of Slovenia's ski centres is that almost all of them off er a direct connec-

tion with the valley below. Ease of access is complemented by modern cable cars

and gondola lifts. Two other characteristics of almost all of Slovenia's ski centres

are their small size and their variety. Th e slopes are lively centres of winter sports

activity. In the valleys, in the traditional ski lodges or on »snow beaches«, you can

enjoy the crowds and music and mingle with other winter sports enthusiasts.

You may be surprised by the straightforwardness, modernity and friendliness of

the ski centres. Th eir proximity to urban centres, where you can enjoy evening

strolls after a hard day's skiing, give them a special charm. And in your hunt for

even more fun and entertainment, a larger town is only ever a short drive away.

FROM THE BLOKE PLATEAU TO THE WORLD CUP

Th e still-vital tradition of the Bloke skiers

reminds us of how skiing has become one

of the most popular sports on the sunny

side of the Alps. Th e story began in the

17th century on the Bloke Plateau, where a

unique method of travelling over the snow

on skis was developed. Slovenian skis still

sweep down the white slopes today and

traverse great distances in the sky. Slove-

nia can boast successful professional skiers

who are among the best in the world. Every

year Kranjska Gora and Maribor host FIS

World Cup competitions. Pokljuka is fa-

mous as the fi rst biathlon centre. Planica

holds the record for the longest ski jumps.

And Elan of Slovenia is one of the world's

most prestigious and technologically ad-

vanced makers of skiing equipment.

FEEL MOVEMENT.Forty-three ski centres, large and small, equipped with cable cars and lifts, are a para-dise for those who love zigzagging down the slopes. Skiers and snowboarders who set off suffi ciently early can admire the morning from the tops of snow-covered mountains. Your fi rst morning descent of a smooth packed slope will remain in your memory even after your pleasantly tired legs have started to crave a rest in a nearby mountain hut. In some ski centres snowboarders have separate runs and special snowboarding parks for dar-ing acrobatic stunts. For those who are less keen on speed and slopes, frozen lakes and mountain plateaus off er excellent conditions for cross-country skiing. In Slovenia pleasure is guaranteed on slopes and plateaux covered with a powdery blanket of snow.

FEEL ADRENALINE.Away from the pistes, Slovenia's ski centres off er secret trails and hidden corners that will really get your pulse racing. Th e enchanting waters and magnifi cent waterfalls of summer are transformed, in winter, into adrenaline-boosting challenges for the adventurous. Ice climbing is an activity that only the bravest dare to try. For the sake of a descent on tour skis, the more tenacious among you will fi rst climb a mountain on foot before heading off on your adventure. Th e untouched carpet of snow that sinks lightly under your skis will give you the courage to repeat your climb to the peak.

FEEL PLAYFULNESS.When we are relaxing after a pleasantly var-ied day, our childlike curiosity revives. Ad-mire the true face of the winter idyll with a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh or even on a dogsled. Th e bolder among you might like to try a faster ride on a toboggan or snowmo-bile. Some ski centres off er real toboggan-ing adventures. Night tobogganing beneath a starry sky – itself a promise that you will wake up the next morning to another sunny day full of winter fun – is an unforgettable experience. Small ski centres in the midst of unspoilt nature off er safe, fun experiences in contact with crystal-pure air and the warmth of a cosy, domestic atmosphere.

FEEL RELAXATION.Each of Slovenia's ski centres has its own story. Some will captivate you with enchant-ing nature and entice you on long walks. Others will reveal to you the paths of tra-dition in an urban wander through nearby towns. In the winter holiday season, you can enjoy the festive atmosphere among the stalls of Christmas markets and at outdoor events. For those of you who like to pamper yourselves after a tiring day, some ski centres off er total relaxation in the shape of spa cen-tres, wellness programmes and the pleasures of fi ne cuisine. Everyone will fi nd the thing that makes it worth coming back for active winter holidays year after year.

Ski green!

Over a third of Slovenia lies within Natura 2000 protected areas. Over half of the country is co-vered by forest. Slovenia is one of the richest countries in Europe in terms of biological diver-sity and one of the 15 cleanest countries in the world!* Slovenia's ski centres are in direct con-tact with nature protection areas. Most of them lie in areas that are mountain pastures in sum-mer. Encourage the conservation of their special characteristics: eat locally produced food. Th ink about the environment when travelling: use ski buses – even from the centre of Ljubljana. Take the train to Bohinjska Bistrica, or take an ordi-nary city bus to the ski centre above Maribor. Be environmentally friendly: reduce waste and save energy. Th ank you!
