Immaculate Conception Church Restoration

UPDATE

Dear Parishioners and friends, Works with the third phase of our Church building restoration will continue this coming Spring (2017), weather permitting. Most of the work at this time will be the restoration of the north tower domes (small domes), copper and wood surrounding the domes. The water has caused serious damage inside the north tower and choir loft. Aging windows around the north tower also need to be restored, and will be restored this coming Spring-Summer. We also need to restore the half dome on the south side of our church (the half dome protects the painting of the Blessed Mother above the Sanctuary- Altar) - the Crown Jewel of our

beautiful Church. We plan to restore it this coming summer if we have the finances necessary for the work to be accomplished. In the near future work needs to be done on the East and West walls of our Church building (mostly on the exterior) to prevent water infiltration that causes damage to the walls. A better system to prevent “Sewer back up floods” in our Church and rectory basement is needed. Adjustment to the Church heating system to bring heat to the Church Choir loft is also necessary. After the north tower is restored our Bell system will need adjustment. Due to additions to the Church building restoration project, our new cost estimate for the completion of this phase in our Church restoration is approximately $250,000 (two hundred and fifty thousand dollars). Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Schools heating system also needs urgent repairs, an upgrade in the Schools boiler system is scheduled for this spring. Following the advice of the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church Executive Council approved by the Parish Pastor, we will continue the Restoration of our Church building one step at a time, every year we do as much as our finances allow us to. I thank you for your support of our Restoration project, of your support to our Parish, our Parish Schools. We have accomplished great things in very difficult times; we will continue to do so. With faith and determination we will safeguard what we have received for future generations, that is the mission given us by the Almighty. Therefore, I kindly ask you to continue supporting our Church restoration project and the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Schools. If you have questions, please call: (586) 907 8552 Yours in Christ Father Daniel Schaicoski Pastor/IC Schools Admin

A GIFT TO SAINT NICHOLAS Dear children, the feast of Saint Nicholas is fast approaching. St Nicholas informed that he will indeed visit our beloved Parish and bring his gifts to reward good children for their excellent behavior. Let us also make a nice surprise to our beloved Saint Nicholas. As a gift to St Nicholas we ask children to paint the Nativity Scene or write a poem to St Nicholas or the Child Jesus.

Bring your paintings or poems to the Church. We will have an exposition of your work in our Church on Sunday, December 17, 2017 during all Divine Liturgies and during the Christmas celebration. Don't forget to write your name on the painting or poem. Let's get to work and make a nice surprise to St. Nicholas! At Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church, we will celebrate Saint Nicholas on Sunday, December 17, 2017 during the 10 am Divine Liturgy (There will be NO 12 noon Divine Lit-urgy) on December 17, 2017.

The Good Samaritan

Lk 10: 25-37 The age of hypocrisy!

The lawyer, who approached Jesus in Lk 10: 25-37, was far from being sincere when he asked Our Lord what he to do to inherit eternal life. The Gospel text tells us that he asked the question in order to justify himself. After all, how can you love your neighbor if you haven't got one, or if you don't know who he is? This man was certainly a learned individual, as far as schooling goes. It was his job to study and interpret the Law of Moses. Yet he asked his question out of insincere motives, wishing to bait Jesus, to humiliate Him, to catch Him in his own words. Of course, the opposite happened. He got the answer he deserved; he was forced to admit that he that showed mercy on poor traveler was indeed his neighbor. The lawyer was an intellectual giant, yet he was useless to God and to his own society, for he cared only for himself and his immediate loved ones. Instead of wasting time asking who his neighbor was, he should have been actively engaged in helping his neighbor – all of those who needed his aid. As Jesus said to him, "Go, and you do likewise". He is saying the same to us today. Christ is not interested in fruitless intellectual and philosophical theories. He wants to go "Where the action is" – to show love and mercy in his name to those who need it most. Preachers of righteousness today there are thousands. What we need are activists – Christians deeply committed to God. If our words are proved empty by our deeds (or by lack of deeds", what can we expect from Christ but a stern rebuke: "Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it not to me. The parable of the Samaritan is a tremendously important part of the teaching of Christ, precisely because it was a new teaching, a distinctively Christian teaching. Most religions teach man to care for himself and his family, but Jesus taught the world the true meaning of the word "neighbor." Today's era is at many times an era of hypocrisy. We worry about pollution and ecology, Global warming, deforestation of the Amazon, the Arctic bear, animal cruelty, the abandoned cats and dogs, the starving in Africa or someplace else in the world. We come to America but we stand by Putin! We love Ukraine but we prefer to speak Russian amongst ourselves! We worry ourselves sick over people we don't know and probably will never know them or the real situation in which they live. But to the suffering people on our own doorsteps, in our own backyard, our streets we pay no attention (there are more people abandoned on the streets and homeless than cats and dogs, but caring for cats and dogs is kinda cool, makes us look modern!!!). Who cares about the young people in need today! The elderly! The immigrants, the undocumented in our community! Perhaps in this parish! All that matters is; in the case I am a liberal, the liberal agenda, in case I am a conservative, the conservative agenda, hypocrisy. Everything is wrong but nothing is our fault. We debate about democracy, and yet we are miniature tyrants in our own environments, our families, our homes. We cannot love mankind and hate man in particular. We cannot ignore our next door neighbor and pour forth streams to verbal love of those living half way across the world. Finally the parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us that: We must help a man even when he has brought his trouble on himself, as the traveler had done. Any man of any color or nationality who is in need is our neighbor. Our help must be as wide as the love of God. The help must be practical and not consist merely in feeling sorry. No doubt the priest and the levity felt sorry and pity for the wounded man on the side of the road, but they did nothing to help him. Compassion to be real must issue in deeds. What Jesus said to the scribe, he says to us – "Go you and do the same".
