Centered? Do what? Centered in what? Centered on what? What are we focused on? Where is our heart? Really? Our kids, when they were young, were diagnosed with ADHD. They had a difficult time focusing on anything. My, was it a challenge! Church, when we come together as a family to worship, what do we focus on? What are our hearts and minds centered on? The question applies to every day and every moment of our lives.

May our God help us to remember that Jesus Christ MUST be the center of our faith. The storms will come. The trials will face us. Clinging close to Jesus, we will be safe, protected, shielded from the storms of life. But even so, we will still be challenged, stretched, wrung out.

But staying focused on Jesus, we will be anchored in Him, secure and unshaken. Race car drivers are trained to focus their attention on where they want to go ( as opposed to where they don’t want to go). The premise is simple: They are traveling so fast that if something catches their attention, and they look at it, they’ll hit it! So they learn to tune out the peripheral and focus on the road ahead.

Friend, focusing on Jesus will always keep us moving in the right direction. With little or no attention to the peripheral, I press on ahead – my attention on Jesus. If not, I can’t follow where He is going – I’m less in tune with Him. May our heartbeat be in tune with His heartbeat.

Let’s just keep it simple, and let’s keep CENTERED. It’s the greatest of challenges.

Good Morning

One wet and miserable morning in Ohio, Ray Blankenship was making breakfast when he looked out the window to the open storm water drain that ran alongside his house. What he saw terrified him – a small girl being swept down the drain. He also knew that further downstream, the ditch disappeared with a roar underneath the road. Ray ran out the door and raced along the ditch, trying to get ahead of the little girl. Then he hurled himself into the deep, churning water. He surfaced and was able to grab the child’s arm. They tumbled end over end. Within about one meter of the drain going under the road, Ray’s free hand felt something protruding from one bank. He grabbed hold and held on for dear life. “If I can just hang on until help comes,” he thought. But he did better than that. By the time fire department rescuers arrived, Ray had pulled the girl to safety. Both were treated for shock. On April 12, 1989, Ray Blankenship received the US Coast Guard’s Silver Lifesaving Medal. The award is fitting, Ray Blankenship was at even greater risk to himself than most people knew. You see, Ray can’t swim. (As reported in

Even though Ray didn’t know how to swim, he knew the girl would drown if he did nothing. So he jumped in and did what he could. A lot of us are sitting on the banks, while we see those around us drowning in sin. We see the problem, but we don’t think we know enough – or have the experience – to do anything about it. So, we sit and watch it happen. Many of us need to start diving in, trusting that God will provide the answers and help we need. Besides, you will never learn how to swim standing on the bank, will
