What Employees Really Want

Quote of the Day

“Want an incentive programthat works? Easy.

Make work fun again.”

Too Many Perks?

I read something that struck me as both sad and funny.

It was about incentive programs.

It said that employees prefer to choose from fewer than 100 perks when deciding on a reward for a job well done.

I found that sad because I can’t think of many companies that offer hundreds of rewards for getting the job done.

The Stress of Too Many Perks!

Why funny?

I found it a little funny because employees are increasingly dissatisfied with their jobs. (Read)

With 70% of employees unhappy at work, I doubt having to choose from hundreds of rewards is much of a widespread burden.

Imagine the stress of choosing from 100s of perks. Oh, The humanity!

Real Incentive

While I appreciate the work done by my colleagues in the employee recognition industry, I know people want something more. I mean less. No, more.

Actually, they want both— more and less.

No Cost Benefits?

Improving morale, loyalty and productivity is not that difficult.

Most of the things people want at work don’t cost anything.

Let’s look at what they want more (and less) of…

What Employees Really Want

1. They want more input at work.

2. They want to spend fewer hours working per week.

3. They want to have more fun at work.

4. They want less stress at work.

5. They want to get more done.

6. They want more opportunity.

No Cost Benefits

The things employees want most at work can be accomplished at virtually no cost. (You must want to)

Are they worth trying to accomplish?

Ask your team. The answer will be “yes”.

What about the business? The business will gain a more productive workforce. Improved morale equates to improved loyalty. That translates to improved quality and service. Sound good?

Better Than Lean

Improvement must be approached in the right way. Most continuous improvement programs seek to cut their way to success. (People as expense items)

Can we trim the fat, work at maximum efficiency, have fun at work, work fewer hours and always be improving?!

Employees want to work fewer hours and they want to have fun. That sounds like fantasy. Is it possible?

Yes!

We can improve efficiency. We can streamline processes. We can improve the products we sell. We can improve our service.

We can improve every aspect of our businesses if we adopt a more human approach than merely looking for costs to cut.

This not just a feel-good idea. It’s a smart system to improve any business.

The 3E System

© TeachU, All Rights Reserved, Share Freely, Quote Often, Play Nice

That’s It!

Education, Ethics and Excellence make the foundation of the 3E System of improvement.

It’s not Lean. It’s better.

Cutting Fat?

If Lean is like a diet.

The 3E System is like good nutrition.

Diets work for a while, then fail.

Good nutrition is a change for the better, forever.

The Basis

The 3E System works by using 3 blocks upon which we can build any improvement initiative:

• Education

• Ethics

• Excellence

Remember that list of things employees really want? We can meet every one of those objectives with this system without adding cost to the business.

3E System Steps

1. Decide to make the improvements; commit.

2. Let your team know you are committed to these changes. (Puts you on the hook to deliver!)

3. Pick one from the list and focus on it.

4. Ask for suggestions; seek input to achieve that goal.

5. Make small improvements moving toward the goal.

6. Start the next item.

Use the 3E System

As you approach each step ask:

Is there an education opportunity that will help make this happen? Does the team need training? Can a “better way” be learned? (Education)

Is this the right thing to do? (Ethics)

Is this initiative adding to the excellence of the business? (Excellence)

To Work Through a List of

Improvements

As you reach ~80% of the first goal, start work on the next.

Continue the cycle

Start Work on Goal #1

At 80% Completion, Start Goal #2

Complete Goal #1Work on Goal #2

At 80% Completion of Goal,

Start Next…

Foundation

Each change you make must be grounded in each of the 3 blocks of successful business:

Education: Teach better ways, supply tools, always be learning

Ethics: Do the right thing

Excellence: Add to quality

Enough for Now

This isn’t the time to present an entirely new system of business improvement.

This is just an introduction to let you to know that you can make improvements to both the bottom line and the happiness of the employees.

The 3E System is a new way of thinking for a new economy.

And Fun at Work?

What about fun at work?

Fun at work doesn’t cost. People often have the most fun when they are working their hardest.

Fun matters.

Fun is important.

Fun pays.

Fun is Part of 3E

Fun is part of the 3E System too.

The 3E System is designed to improve business by making permanent changes to the way things are done.

The 3E System strengthens a business to fortify it against tougher competition and tighter economic conditions while improving the Work/Life balance for employees.

Striving for better Work/Life balance for employees does not conflict with efficiency.

What About Fun?

You don’t want to read 150 slides right now. So I’ll cover fun at work in another presentation.

But please consider this:

Think about the times you had the most fun working.

Those “fun” times were probably also some of the times you worked your hardest. The “all nighter” to get the big deal, the race against a deadline, the time you got all those units out to fill that record order…

Fun Can Mean Working Harder

Fun can mean working harder than ever.

It has to be properly approached.

How to bring fun into your workplace?

One part of a 3E System business is having a creativity team. Creativity can be learned. Coming up with new ideas that profit the company is fun.

Summary

Job dissatisfaction is at record highs. Real wages are shrinking.

What employees want most are things that can be done with 3E: Education, Ethics, Excellence.

This is just the beginning.

3E can drive direct improvements to manufacturing, sales and service too. 3E can drive improvement in any area of any business. If that’s what you want.
