Your Workforce Development

TEAMDo you have trouble recruiting, retaining and training your workforce?

Do you see a skills gap with applicants? Are you concerned about the future of your industry’s workforce pipeline? Southeast AlabamaWorks can provide solutions.

This organization serves to help businesses, job seekers and students in 10 counties in southeast Alabama. Whether you are a new or existing employer looking for skilled workers, a job seeker looking for work, or a student looking for training for a promising career, Southeast AlabamaWorks is where you should start.

Ryan Richards, director of workforce development, has added two new highly-skilled team members to create the pipelines in which to share concerns and collaborate with similar industries to produce results.

Katie Thomas serves as the business and industry relations manager. Thomas joined the team with experience in community and program development through past positions with Alabama Power and Alabama Extension. She oversees our regional industry clusters, which are a chance for companies across a specific industry to come together to discuss workforce needs, and guide Southeast AlabamaWorks partnerships to develop programs and opportunities to address those needs and help businesses fill jobs with more qualified applicants.

Ann Carr joined the team as programs manager. With her 10 years spent in the Alabama Career Center system, Carr is able to provide knowledge and leadership in all things WIOA and Employment Service related. She facilitates hiring events for local companies and connects businesses with numerous grant opportunities for both new hires and existing employees. She helps to implement a wide scope of projects for Southeast AlabamaWorks.

Over the past two years, Southeast AlabamaWorks has been able to produce many Workforce Initiatives that are Noteworthy (WINs).

It has worked with our three regional community college partners on many initiatives that have produced excellent results for students and companies. One specific program is the new CDL Driver Program on the Alabama Aviation College campus in Ozark.

This organization also partners with regional career centers in hosting job fairs, working with eligible citizens to provide grants for high-skilled occupations, and helping industries subsidize up to 75 percent of new-employee wages for up to six months, via the On-the-Job Program.

Southeast AlabamaWorks just completed the third session Hospitality 101, a partnership between it, Visit Dothan and Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce. Hospitality 101 is designed to create community engagement for local hotel employees and educate them on how to sell Dothan and show them all that Dothan has to offer. Customer service training is also embedded in the program. These individuals are very important to our community as Hospitality Hero’s.

Finally, in February, the fourth annual Southeast Worlds of Work (WOW) was held. There were 4,173 eighth-grade students from 58

schools in 15 counties who attended the event. There were 90 World Operators, the most ever, from 11 different ‘Worlds’ (industry sectors) to provide the interactive, hands-on career experiences.

To become engaged with Southeast AlabamaWorks, contact Richards at (334) 792-5138 or [email protected]. For information, visit www.southeastalabamaworks.com.

Spiritual Enrichment Center HoldsTour Of Love Event

CAC Plans Annual Blue Ribbon Campaign

In February, Mark “Dr. Dream” Peebler, an internationally known holistic healing practitioner and International speaker, brought a 33 Tibetan Healing Bowl Experience to the Spiritual Enrichment Center of Dothan.

The SEC presented the event in support of the Gilung and Sindupalachoka villages in Nepal which were devastated by a series of earthquakes in 2015. The village of Gilung is in the north of Nepal, only 30 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquakes, and makes these beautiful Tibetan bowls that are shared with many healers around the world. When the earthquakes hit Nepal, all 100 homes in the village were destroyed.

Using the Tibetan bowls, Dr. Dream and his Angels created a guided visualization combined with different sounds and vibrations to harmonize the energy body and relax the mind. Attendees will feel energized and inspired as the bowls unlock stuck energies and connect the mind, body and spirit.

Because the February event was such a huge sell out and people had to be turned away at the door, the SEC plans to have the Tour of Love return this coming October 2019. Be sure to visit the agency’s website www.secdothan.

org or follow on Facebook so you will know when the October event gets scheduled and to get your tickets early.

For more information, call the Spiritual Life Center at (334) 794-2840.

Each April during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center coordinates a community-wide Blue Ribbon Campaign. The blue ribbon is a national symbol of the need to protect our children.

The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness about child abuse and to generate support for programs and services to help victims. This year marks CAC’s 25th annual campaign and the agency is so thankful for the continued support the community gives to the children served through the agency.

Bonnie Finley, a grandmother, made a personal commitment to stop child abuse when she tied a royal blue ribbon on the antenna of her car after her own 4-year-old grandson was killed at the hands of his mother’s abusive boyfriend. Little did she know the impact that this simple gesture would have on people and communities across the United States.

Out of her tragedy and heartache emerged an outcry and thus began a National Blue Ribbon Campaign.

Upcoming Events include the Blue Ribbon Press Conference Friday, April 5, at 10 a.m. at Porter Park, or Porter Hardware if it rains; and the Blue Ribbon Kick Off during Foster Fest that evening.

This is your opportunity to make a difference by partnering with the CAC in supporting the “25 Years of Hope” Blue Ribbon Campaign and be a participant in the “Blue Ribbon Friday for Kids” T-shirt event. All donations are used to help abused children in our local area. When you make an investment in the CAC, you are helping a child move from victim to survivor.

Celebrating The Gift Of Hope And LifeDid you know that April is National Donate

Life Month. Every year, Donate Life America leads the celebration of National Donate Life Month to focus national attention on organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation to share the importance of registering your decision to be a donor, honor deceased and living donors, and celebrate the life-saving and healing gift of transplantation.

Legacy of Hope, the organ procurement that serves Alabama, partners with hospitals and the community to encourage all Alabamians to consider donation, register their decision to donate and share their decision with their family.

To help illustrate the message of donation, Donate Life America creates unique artwork for each NDLM. The 2019 NDLM art was inspired by bicycles and the phrase, “Life is a beautiful ride.”

Bicycles serve as a symbol of progress, renewal and the moving circle of life. We each carry the potential to help make life a beautiful ride for ourselves, and then for others by registering as a donor, considering living donation, being a caregiver and championing

the Donate Life cause. The NDLM bicycle

theme and art will be incorporated into celebrations and events across the country during April.

Nationally, there are over 113,000 men, women and children waiting for

an organ transplant in our country and nearly 2,000 waiting in Alabama. We all rely on the generosity of donors who are able to give hope to recipients.

For more information, contact Raina Wood, local Legacy of Hope coordinator, at (334) 731-9200, [email protected] or visit www.legacyofhope.org.

Glasstream Powerboats Announces Dothan ExpansionGlasstream Powerboats announced in 2015 the growth and expansion

of a new manufacturing facility in Dothan, Alabama, and is proud to announce the company is now going into Phase II of its original plan. The additional 21,700 square feet will increase the current facility from 55,000 square feet to 76,700 square feet.

“This expansion will allow us to streamline our production operations and manage our exponential growth in production.” stated Kruis Retherford, Glasstream Powerboats president and owner.

“Phase II of our plans will offer a larger area for our lamination department and a designated place to store boat molds. With room for storage, we will now be able to use one of the original buildings built in Phase I for a new cutting/grinding department,” stated A.L. Kirkland, founder and designer. “This expansion is necessary for the continued demand of our product and will be a state-of-the-art production facility for our new flagship model debuting next year.”

During the construction of the new addition, Glasstream Powerboats is also looking to increase its workforce and will be seeking to hire 40-45 new employees within the next four-six months. “This expansion is important

not only for our brand, but also for the surrounding Dothan community and the state of Alabama as a whole,” added Kirkland. “Between the need to grow and the number of people coming to us wanting to work for Glasstream be- cause of the product we produce and the way we produce it, to us that speaks volumes.”

Glasstream Powerboats is a privately owned powerboat company that builds center console boats ranging in size from 17 feet to 36 feet. In addition to the company’s strong dealer net work in the United States, it has an international network of distributors located in Asia, Central and South America, Europe and the Caribbean.

Glasstream Powerboats is a proven leader in designing and creating advanced fuel-efficient center console boats with the dual inverted stepped hull. This unique low-drag design increases operational efficiency and stability. World-wide Glasstream Powerboats are sought after by dealers and end users alike.

WorkforceDevelopment

Southeast AlabamaWorks over the past four years has continued to develop the Southeast Worlds of Work program that takes career exploration to the next level. So many young people do not have the opportunity to see, hear and more importantly experience careers that are available right here in southeast Alabama.

This past February, over 4,100 eighth-grade students from 58 schools in 15 counties from three states attended Southeast WOW held on the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds.

Students had the opportunity to interact with 90 World Operators, the most ever for the event, from 11 different Worlds. These companies and organizations provided interactive, hands-on career experiences.

Students began their World Tour with Transportation and Public Service. They test drove a big-rig simulator and connected with the CDL Driver Training Program instructor. They dressed in firefighter equipment, dragged firehoses and even had the opportunity to use the powerful firehoses.

Students followed with Utilities and Energy. They wore personal protective equipment, stood inside of a bucket from a utility truck and worked as though they were a lineman for a day.

The next stop was Construction and Agriculture. Students viewed a live welding activity, used hammers and drills, and learned about the all-important poultry industry.

Students then immersed themselves in Healthcare and Hospitality. They got hands-on with a myriad of healthcare providers from the region. They also got to race to change out bedding and see what a chef does.

Lastly, students entered the Worlds of Automotive Technology, Aviation, Manufacturing and Media/IT. Each World Operator provided different engaging activities that showed off all of the jobs a student could

find in those companies and organizations. As Career and Technical Education becomes more of an emphasis

in school systems, Southeast WOW provides an essential connection. Students are shown and made aware of careers that can be earned through education from the programs.

For more information and a complete list of World Operators and schools, visit www.southeastwow.org. To become engaged with Southeast WOW, contact Ryan Richards, director of workforce development, at (334) 792-5138 or [email protected].
