EDITOR’S LETTER Welcome to the June issue of the Alyth Voice! Many thanks to everyone who has said how much they like the new pictorial covers for the Voice. We’ve got another packed issue for you, and I hope you like our front cover as well. Inside this issue, more examples of Alyth’s amazing community spirit. We hear from Steven and Ashley Boath on how well their new Cafe in the Square and Kidszone is doing, as well as the tremendous help and support they received when they were hit by the terrible floods of 2015. There’s also a call from the Alyth Family History Project for contributions to help them celebrate their tenth anniversary in August. The Project has amassed thousands of records over its first decade - a testament to the sense of community and pride in our heritage that is such a feature of Alyth. There can’t be many towns of our size that have such a vibrant family history initiative with a track record like that! In yet another example of community spirit and pride, it was wonderful to see the dozens of folk, young and old, who turned out on 19 May for the Big Litter Picking organised by Alyth in Bloom. It really is heartening that so many people are willing to give up a Sunday afternoon to help keep our town looking spick and span. Well done to all concerned and many thanks indeed to the AiB team for setting it up and for all the other fantastic work they do. You can read all about it in their update in this issue, and the picture alongside shows the keen litter-pickers getting a briefing in the Airlie Street Hall before heading out onto the streets. Congratulations are also due to Alyth Musical Society for their triumphant production of the Sound of Music, and to Tigh na Leigh Guest House for their national award - see the full story in this issue. Finally, many thanks indeed to Kilry WRI and to Mrs Laurie Crisp for their generous donations to our funds. Contributions like this really do make a difference to our finances and also tell us that our efforts in producing the Voice have value to the community - many thanks indeed, and if you feel like helping out in person please do get in touch with any of the team listed on the back page. Alyth Youth Partnership

The opportunities that arise in Alyth for our young people have been coming thick and fast, and we certainly enjoyed being part of Clare Cooper’s fantastic activities for the Cateran EcoMuseum. In the space of a couple of weeks, we had young people building a coracle using a design which is thousands of years old, composing poetry, then working with virtual reality technology to get some ideas on creating their own art installation. As parents, we are often tired of hearing about computer games but these ones had genuine educational merit and sparked lots of interesting conversations. There will be more to come with this project, and I would like to say how great everyone involved in the EcoMuseum has been with our young people. At the time of writing, we are looking forward to the Alyth Creates Festival – I just hope we manage to get everything ready in time! Part of this preparation is the litter pick, and the young people are keen to get involved – principally I guess because we are going to be in the burn, which is always fun. Talking of the burn, our youngest group, the tribe, are busy designing boats which we will test up the Den in June. I’m not sure of the boats will be functional to the point of taking passengers but the challenge certainly is for them to work together as teams and create a vessel that can at least float! Mind you, none of the young people seem to mind getting wet, as can be seen when they are out watering the plants in Alyth. The pavements get a good soaking too as they get to grips with filling watering cans from the water bowser! June also sees us mark 21 years of Alyth Youth Partnership, and to celebrate we are having a 21st Birthday Party in Alyth Town Hall on Saturday 22nd June. Steve Tait is our DJ for the night, and everyone involved in AYP past and present is invited to come along. If anyone out there has some good photos from the past 21 years, I’d love to include them in our display, so please email them to me: [email protected]. The fun starts at 7.30pm, and it’s £5 at the door for adults while kids go free. Bring your own refreshments, and we look forward to a night of family fun and reminiscing. We might even teach you some of the games that we get up to! George Annan

Alyth Community Council

The Council (ACC) met on

Wednesday 8th May 2019 in Alyth Town Hall

Glenisla Development – Adrian Johnson and Malcolm Officer attended the meeting and gave the Council a detailed outline of the plans. Initially the dementia home will be built, together with 20 houses and 3 commercial units. The developers have been talking to Universities in connection with training staff to work in the care home. The houses will be suited to first time buyers and elderly and are all on one level. The road around the bridge adjacent to the Pitcrocknie restaurant will be widened and HGV’s involved in the construction will be diverted away from Alyth. Overall there is planning permission for 216 residential homes, and the developers will progress on a staggered basis according to demand. The Access road between Isla Road and the development will be improved to allow for easier walking to Alyth. Building is to start in 2 to 3 weeks’ time. Plaque for the Late Professor Hutchison- It is hoped to have this completed by the end of the summer and will be in the centre of Alyth. Speedwatch Campaign – Due to the costs involved we will not be participating in this scheme at the moment Litter pick- Members of the Community Council will be taking part on Sunday 19th May. Local Councillors Report- It has been noted that vehicles are parking illegally in disabled bays and this has been reported to the authorities. The square parking lines have been repainted; however, it was noted it had started to come off already and this will be addressed. There have been instances of mud not being cleared from the Meethill Road and Perth and Kinross Council are dealing with this. The new Electric Charging Point in the Square is not working, and this will be fixed soon. Date of Next Meeting – Wednesday 12th June at 7pm

Wish to thank the people of Alyth yet again for their support at the recent coffee morning.

Over £1000 was raised.

This will allow us to continue to buy equipment and plants and to pay for services such as watering and insurance

Thank you again

Huge success for Alyth in Bloom community litter-pick There was an amazing turn-out on Sunday 19 May for the Community litter-pick organised by Alyth in Bloom. Around 70-80 people joined in, representing concerned residents, AYP, Scouts, Cubs, Guides, Alyth Community Council, Alyth Development Trust, Alyth Arts & Crafts Guild, Alyth in Bloom. As you can see from the photos, a large trailer’s worth of rubbish was removed and properly disposed of. Alyth in Bloom said on their Facebook page: “It’s a great pity such a day is necessary, but it's great to know that so many people CARE! Many thanks to all.”

ADT Update Alyth Creates ADT is proud to have supported this year’s Alyth Creates festival on 24-26 May with a grant of £4,760 from the funding we are starting to receive from the Tullymurdoch Windfarm. Alyth Creates is a fantastic celebration of the talent and skill of so many local people, and this year’s even was bigger and better than ever.

Strathclyde Cycle Network The Strathmore Cycle Network is currently interviewing several candidates for a one-year part-time development officer role aimed at increasing awareness and use of the path network as a sustainable option for people wishing to travel between Alyth, Blairgowrie and Rattray, and Coupar Angus. Alyth Development Trust (ADT) has secured £19,500 of new funding for the project from the “Smarter Choices, Smarter Places” Open Fund run by the Paths for All charity. The Strathmore Cycle Network is a £1.6m partnership project involving ADT together with Blairgowrie & Rattray Development Trust and Forward Coupar Angus, to create a network of shared-user paths to connect the three towns.

Grant for Alyth in Bloom ADT fully supports Alyth in Bloom’s exciting Burnside Improvement Project, and has already contributed a grant of £6,037 for an information board, a listening post and a sculpture. We congratulate AiB on breaking through the £100,000 barrier as they work towards their £120,000 target, and we hope they are able to get started on the work as soon as possible.

Thrifty One From the Community, For the Community

Opening times: 10am—4pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday Phone: Anne 07592 338449.(speak or leave a message)

Facebook message on our page: Thrifty One Email: [email protected]

For those of you who use social media , you can find us as Thrifty One. Please like & share us with your friends. The more folk who know about us, the more funds we can raise. Thanks!

April & May were most certainly ‘will we, won’t we months’. Our shop heaters went down the stairs for the summer, or so we thought. But back into the shop they came. Our winter stock was headed for storage, but in came customers caught out by the chill winds and cold rain! However the time has come to embrace bright clothes, light jackets, dresses and shorts. But... we can always find you something warmer when the need arises, as it surely will! So fear not! You only have to ask. What you see in the shop is only half the story. Underneath the shop where, we are told, pies were once made (Thrifty One was a butchers shop for many a year) is a veritable cornucopia. Useful things, things that might be useful, winter stock, summer stock, Christmas stock. It’s a coat hanger breeding ground. There are tea sets that haven’t sold but we are sure the right person will come along one day. Several boxes of records, that we bring up as needed. One customer made the mistake of saying she liked the old Jimmy Reeves records; she went away with an armful! We have more! So when the Alyth Out of School Care Group came looking for a couple of badminton rackets we managed to dig out several, plus shuttle cocks, tennis rackets and balls. They were happy & we were happy that a good home had been found for them. Who knows a future Andy Murray might one day fondly reminisce about how his/her first tennis racket came from the local charity shop!? Our May contribution came about as a result of a letter from the Blairgowrie & District Senior Outings Group. This group formed in response to an observed need for smaller groups of folk wanting to get away for a day but having no means to do so. They borrow the Blairgowrie Freedom Coach to do this. Alyth residents are within their ‘District’ and Thrifty One volunteers felt the idea was a good one and needed support & promotion. I f anyone is interested call into the shop and we will give you their details. Stupidly I don’t have them with me as I write this and this newsletter is already late!

Tigh Na Leigh wins national award

Tigh Na Leigh Guest House on Airlie Street has been named the AA Guest Accommodation of the Year (Scotland) for 2019. As featured in our September issue, Tigh Na Leigh was taken over by Karen and Graham Smith only last summer so this is a major accolade after less than a year in charge. The award scheme has been running for 10 years and this is the first time a Perthshire establishment has won it. The AA inspector paid tribute to Karen and Graham’s “strong ethos of hospitality and friendliness,” noting that they have put their heart and soul to deliver a knowledgeable sociable approach to each guest’s stay”. Formerly a doctor's house in Victorian times, Tigh na Leigh had been extensively modernised into a comfortable and relaxing guest house by previous owners Chris and Bettina, and Karen and Graham have built on that with retained Victorian architecture blended with contemporary interior design. The AA award cited the house’s setting, with relaxing gardens, offering a tranquil, relaxing place to unwind and described Karen’s food as “delicious, well deserving of the AA Dinner and Breakfast awards achieved. The ambience, tranquillity, atmosphere and friendliness all highlight the joy of any stay.” More than 50 members of the public have reviewed Tigh Na Leigh on the AA website and its average score is 10 out of 10. Picture shows Karen and Graham Smith receiving their award at a glittering ceremony in London in April.

Mow the lawn weekly and keep hoeing those weeds where necessarily hand weed round plants. As I've said before hoeing regularly will save time in the long run. Greenhouse. Pinch out side shoots from tomato plants, take care to pinch the correct shoot its the shoot that appears at the axel between the main stem and a leaf. Modern varies of tomatoes tend to grow leafy shoots from the end of the trusses these can be removed also. If the weather is bright try and give cucumbers a bit of shade, easiest way to do this is to white wash the glass. Plant out summer bedding plants watering regularly until established. Remove dead head as soon as possible to encourage further flowering. Place containers and hanging baskets in there final positions.

Glenisla SWRI Meeting - 16 May 2019 Members were welcomed to our closing meeting of the session. After discussing the business topics of the evening, the new committee for 2019/2020 was elected. The points competition trophy winner was announced and this was Mrs Hilary Lawrence who received the cup from Mrs Kathleen Davidson. Mrs Margaret Melville had compiled a quiz on a Scottish theme for our members to answer. After much laughter and doubt, the resulting scores highlighted that we all needed to brush up on our knowledge of Scotland. Our secretary, Mrs Kathleen Davidson, looked back over all the interesting and enjoyable meetings that our members and visitors had experienced this session including chocolate making, life as a vet, tea growing, a year with a guide dog puppy and various craft evenings with local skilled ladies. We also held a very successful coffee morning in Alyth and hosted a Glenisla Christmas party for local children, parents and grandparents with entertainment and a special visit from Santa on his sleigh. A musical evening was held in February where we welcomed members and guests from the local area and neighbouring rurals to enjoy entertainment with “Freewheelin”. Our new session will begin in September but in the meantime we have our evening outing to the Gin Bothy in Glamis and our summer trip to the Japanese Garden at Cowden and Culross village to look forward to. Visitors and new members will be most welcome to join us at Glenisla rural for the new session commencing in September. Membership £25 Visitors £4

SOME OF ALYTH’S FAVOURITE THINGS The hills around Alyth were alive with the sound of music thanks to this years production from Alyth Musical Society which ran from 16th to 20th April. If you missed it, you most definitely missed out. The societies ranks had clearly been swelled by a number of new faces and not one, but two, sets of Von Trapp children. In place of an overture the audience were treated to some stunning choral music from the ensemble of nuns, in Latin, nonetheless, which set the tone for an impressive show. There were many highlights to the production with Claire Mallinson giving a notable performance as Maria, Marjorie Twivey demonstrating her fantastic vocal range as Mother Abbess and Gerard Cameron offering a convincing Captain Von Trapp. But the performance truly belonged to the children clearly demonstrating that all their hard work put in since September had paid off. Producer Gemma Pryde explained “Ticket sales went really well, with some performances being close to sold out and we would really like to thank everyone who came along and supported us. There were lots of new members this year and it had been great to see everyone working together on this show.” Society President, Andrew Beckett would like to invite “Voice” readers to the Annual General Meeting in the Ogilvie Rooms on Monday 17th June at 7:30 and to encourage everyone to support Alyth’s first pantomime, “Jock and the Beanstalk” in December. Scout Bookfest Alyth Scout Group are currently working hard planning an overseas trip to Sweden in July 2020. This will be a fabulous opportunity for our youngsters to develop life-long skills whilst broadening their horizons. Therefore, we are embarking on a number of fundraising events to help us achieve this goal. We will be running a bookfest this summer as one of our many endeavours. We are looking for second-hand books, of all sorts, to sell to the community over a three-week period in July. Books can be handed in to the Scout hall on Tuesdays 6:30-8:00pm, Thursdays 6:30-9:00pm and Fridays 7:00-9:00pm. The Bookfest will then take place on: Saturday 13th July 2pm-4pm Sunday 14th July 2pm-4pm Wednesday 17th July 7pm-9pm Saturday 20th July 2pm-4pm Sunday 21st July 2pm-4pm Wednesday 24th July 7pm-9pm Saturday 27th July 2pm-4pm Sunday 28th July 2pm-4pm Wednesday 31st July 7pm-9pm So rake out your unwanted books, then come along to get some bargains and refill your bookshelves! 2nd Alyth Brownies & 1st Alyth Guides Some of you will already know that to save the Guides from packing up in Alyth I agreed to take the group on if I could run i t along side my Brownie Unit, and thankfully my fantastic Guiders supported me, and we were also delighted when Beth Turnbull volunteered to come along as a Unit Helper as well. So we now run the Guides on a Tuesday night along with the 2nd Alyth Brownies with the 2 units overlapping. Brownies run from 6.30pm - 7.45pm and Guides run 7.00pm - 8.30pm. Although the Brownies and Guides overlap we do ensure that both groups have their own space and are mainly run separately but the Guides do like to sometimes join in with the Brownies when they are playing games and singing songs, even although they get time to do this in their own time. However, we all went on a joint adventure to Blair Drummond Safari Park in April. There were 10 Guides, 20 Brownies, 6 Guiders and Charley our Young Leader. We set off in a Smith & Sons coach just after 9am and on arrival at the Safari Park we drove round the Safari before heading to the Nordic Yurts we were staying in, which were next to the lion enclosure. Once we were organised we headed round some of the animal enclosures before lunch. The afternoon flew past with the highlight being an Enrichment Workshop where the girls were split into 2 groups and they had to make a toy for the meerkats which also had to be suitable for food being put in them. Both groups did fantastic and once they had finished their masterpieces the girls got to see them being put into the meerkat enclosure, where the animal keepers proceeded to place food in them before the meerkats went to explore their new toys. From 5.30pm we had the play park to ourselves where great fun was had by everyone! Oh yes, the Guiders were on the swings, in the wooden fort and up and down the chutes as much as the girls. Later we had a sing song and toasted marshmallows, before heading back to the yurts to do some crafts. Then it was supper and bed. Sunday saw us up early, we had breakfast and then started to pack up sleeping bags etc before going on a Guided walk with the Educational Team. I think the highlight was seeing Ray the lion keeper putting out meat for the lions and then watching the lions being released from the building they are kept in overnight. All but one male lion was very quick at finding food, and I'm sure it was only after the girls were shouting at him he finally managed to find some as well. Next we headed to the Rhino enclosure where Catherine from the Educational Team gave us a talk and while we were there we enrolled 8 of the Guides. Next it was chimp island and then the sea lion show before lunch, then a play in the playpark and then it was homeward bound. A brilliant time was had by all and I was very proud of all the girls with how well they mixed and how well they did when we spent time with the Educational Team. Big strides forward for Cateran Ecomuseum The Cateran Ecomuseum project has taken another big stride forward with the publication of many new walking, cycling and driving itineraries including some in and around Alyth. The tours include routes around Auld Alyth, the Den, Bamff Estate and local geology including the 400-million-year-old Highland Boundary Fault under Alyth Hill. Further afield, there are tours around Glenisla, Glenshee, Kirkmichael, Lintrathen and along the River Ericht, among others. The itineraries introduce visitors and locals alike to fascinating facts about the history, environment and heritage of the area, stretching back over the more than 1,000 years that Alyth has been a settlement. They tell how Alyth has one of the oldest ins and stone bridges in Scotland, as well intriguing insights into the local farming and textile industries of yore. You can see the full list on the Cateran Ecomuseum website: https://www.cateranecomuseum.co.uk/explore/ and keep in touch with the plans to formally launch the new venture later this year on Facebook: Caterans Common Wealth Picture shows James III, King of Scotland and great-grandfather of Mary Queen of Scots, who in 1488 granted Alyth the status of Burgh of Barony with the right to hold fairs and markets, enabling it to grow.

DONATE TO THE VOICE Your Alyth Voice as a FREE Magazine, written, designed and delivered by local volunteers and depends heavily on precious advertisers and of course on donations from you and our friends across the world. Therefore, it would make sense to make donating as easy a process as possible. This led the Committee to thinking about a secure process that anyone could access and it was decided that PayPal would be the safest and simplest online tool to allow readers the opportunity to donate from their home, their phone etc. PayPal also allows, both people with and without PayPal accounts to send The Voice a donation safely.

GREEN BOOK 12A Sunday 16th June 2019 at 7.30pm

Oscar nominated Mahershala Ali and Vigo Mortensen star in this film, based on a true story. When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighbourhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on "The Green Book" to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger-as well as unexpected humanity and humour-they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

Quote from the Alyth in Bloom article in the 2018 June Alyth Voice---“The yellow hi-vis vests of Alyth in Bloom have started to appear again in the streets around town. Work for the coming season is well underway”---so ditto for 2019. Flower beds are being tidied, weeds removed, flowers dead headed, soil hoed. Grass cutting has begun both at the T-junction and the 5-Roads roundabout and its approach roads. If things don’t look exactly perfect, it’s because we don’t want to cut back the daffodils and crocuses at the time of writing, mid May, this to allow the goodness to get back into the bulb thus producing better blooms next year---at least that’s the theory. Quote from 2018—“Tucked away in a polytunnel are some 1500 plants all in pots. They will be transplanted into planters, flowerbeds, tattie boxes, etc., around Alyth when the risk of frost is over, early June.”---so ditto for 2019. The colour scheme this year will be somewhat different, more reds and pinks I am told by our ladies who decide on the flowers. We have just been awarded a grant by PKC of £2500 to allow us to buy five new, stand alone planters to be placed in the Square. When planted up, these will provide an additional splash of colour---with the added benefit of preventing cars from driving across the pavement to get into the car park!! The Garden Competition, held again last year after a break of 6 years, is scheduled for July 25th --see the separate ad. It was deemed a success last year but we would like more entrants this year. Entry forms can be picked up in Thrifty One and Café in the Square. Completed forms should be returned by July 18th to the same locations. Please join in. The burn side renovation project is moving along, albeit more slowly than hoped. As a reminder, the idea is to remove the bamboo from the west side of the burn from the Square up to the Pack Bridge, replace it with hard paving to match the recently renovated Square, put in street lighting, place free standing planters, benches and artwork along the length and have an information board and listening post prepared by a broad spectrum of the Alyth Community. The estimated cost of all this is well over £100,000. We have raised the amazing total of £101,000 to date, which will allow us to get started when the final approvals have been obtained, hopefully very soon. All the above takes both time and money. We receive great support from many different sources---the people of Alyth, the businesses of Alyth, the “local” grant funders such as SSE Drumderg and Alyth Development Trust, from Perth & Kinross Council, and many, many more. We thank them all sincerely. And to finish on a somewhat less positive note, by the time you read this, there will have been a litter picking day—Sunday 19th May---when folks of all ages representing many groups in Alyth went out around the streets and approach roads of Alyth to pick up litter. It is a great pity that such an exercise is necessary. We thank everyone for their interest and for their concern—a great community effort. As ever, Alyth in Bloom is looking for additional assistance. If you feel you could lend a hand for an hour or two every so often, please contact Tam Thomson (632036), send us an email to [email protected] or contact us on Facebook, www.facebook.com/alythbloom. Any and all assistance will be welcome.

THANKS "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the warm, welcoming and kind hearted people of Alyth for their concern for me during my recent illness. The proprietors of Cafe in the Square have kept me informed of the amount of people asking about my welfare. I wish to thank you all. Thank you also for all my get well cards. I would like to give a thank you to Mr Morris Boyne who took great care looking after my budgie Keo and a very special thank you to Steven and Ashley Boath and staff at Cafe in the Square. The perseverance and cajoling from Steven and Ashley is probably the reason I am here today. Once again my heartfelt thanks to all. Graeme Williamson

SCOUTS There can be little doubt about not “casting a clout until May be oot” – especially this year. The cold wet evenings have spelt havoc with our plans of putting the “out” in Scouting. However this does present an opportunity to carry out other activities. For the Scouts, James Atkinson and Juilia Newman revisited our Code of Conduct. Often it’s not only what we do , but the way in which we do it that is as important. To illustrate this, the Scouts were asked what was important to them and then followed i t up by how to go about achieving this by their own actions The Explorer Scouts have been undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. This involves a great deal of effort and organisation on both Leaders & Explorer Scouts. Even more so when the three levels are being run at the same time. There are expeditions planned for June & September, and I look forward to hearing how they all fared Sometimes I think the only reason I open my mouth is to put my foot in it. And having written about the adverse weather recently, today summer has decided to pay us a visit and the temperature soared into the 20’s. So much so , that the Cub meeting tonight, saw everyone head off from the hut to practise pitching tents – a skill which they will need in the near future. Our Scouting family is constantly changing and tonight will be the last meeting for Patrick West who recently returned from pilot training for a few months, and was last seen heading off with the Cub Pack in tow. He has been helping out at Cubs and Scouts and we wish him well. I was pleased to see Claire Annan our Chairperson tonight handing out handbills for the forthcoming Book Fest. This will be one of the fundraisers for our trip to Sweden next year, and she is looking for support in this venture. This has always been a popular event, but does require a great deal of effort in setting up and manning. I am confident that she will be successful in gaining assistance with this. Anyone who has any connection with the Scout section will by this time have realised that we do not have a set plan which we follow, and details of meetings are agreed by the Leaders on a 3 month basis and carried out. We never have the same programme two years alike. Toward this end, we decided not to have an Expedition Challenge hike this year, but that idea hit the wall as two Scouts want to complete their Chief Scout’s Ward by summer and need to carry out a hike. Fortunately I have a new Leader, Louis who will do the donkey work for this and accompany the Scouts on the hike. His experience in doing Duke of Edinburgh hikes will come in useful. Now where did I put that map? Ron Kirkpatrick

Pollination is the Name of the Game

‘Moderate pollen in Central, Tayside & Fife today’ is a notice that pops up on my mobile telephone from time to time (odd how the UK Met Office has clung to names from local government reorganisations of the past): but to get back to the story. Unwelcome as a high pollen count is for hay fever sufferers, the message reminds us of a vital natural process that affects us all. As spring turns to summer, I am excited by the day to day changes. Stems of willows coppiced by beavers come into leaf and flower. Bumblebees fly in to feed on the pollen, and will be dusted with it before flying on to another tree whose receptive flowers they will pollinate with it. This is a serious business for us humans because insects pollinate so many of the crops on which we depend. Later in the summer, as the cow parsley, hogweed and other members of the carrot family come into flower we can watch the bees, bee flies and hover flies go about their business, looking for the nectar that is their gift from the plants in exchange for their services as pollinators. Willows go for pollination both by insects and by the wind. It seems that the trees vary their dependence according to the weather conditions, which vary from season to season and year to year. Looking at the film of pollen that lies on the surface of pools under woodland at this time of year it is curious to think that this pollen will sink to the bottom of the pool, accumulate in layers and one day become part of a record that will inform scientists in centuries to come about the vegetation of our time, the climate of today and the way the land was managed. Pollen grains vary according to species, which is how they can be identified when examined under a microscope. Looking up from the year old willow shoots to the top of the nearby Norway spruces I am glad to see their immature, vivid pink seed bearing cones. This should be a good cone year for the trees; the red squirrels and cross bills will be glad of that, and so will the siskins. The last big coning year here for Norway spruce was 2014, I think: stripped cones and their scales were heaped around the feet of the spruce trees in the Tay Bridge Wood through that winter. All this apparent diversity and abundance, but report after report warns us of the catastrophic decline of biodiversity throughout the world, the latest report from a United Nations body warning of ecological collapse (https://www.ipbes.net/sites/default/files/downloads/spm_unedited_advance_for_posting_htn.pdf). At last the young people seem to be rebelling. I salute Extinction Rebellion. Paul Ramsay

ALYTH WALKERS

We are an informal group of keen walkers who usually meet once a month. Walks vary from around 6 to 10 miles and are

over a variety of terrain, from level easy tracks to hillier, rougher ground. Walking boots are usually recommended.

The walks are planned and led by members of the group and we meet in Alyth Square for car share. The day of the week

varies.

Interview with: Ashley Boath, Café in the Square by Kevin Coe

When Steven and Ashley Boath opened their first business in Alyth in 2008, they can’t possibly have imagined how things would turn out over the next 10 years. Originally from Dundee, the couple had decided to move out to the country and set up home together in Kilry in 2003. Steven, a time-served baker, worked in Blairgowrie while Ashley managed the out-of-school club. They married in 2006 and moved to Alyth the following year. Life changed for them in a big way in 2008 with the arrival of their first son Cameron, at around the same time as the business Steven worked for in Blair closed down, leaving him out of a job. “We had always thought about working for ourselves,” says Ashley, “so we sat down and thought it’s now or never and decided to take the plunge!” Undeterred by the prospect of taking on a new baby and a new business in the same year, the couple invested in ovens and equipment and opened their new bakery and take-away on Mill Street in late 2008. “After a couple of years, we took over the former studio next door to have somewhere for people to sit in and enjoy a coffee and a cake as well as continuing to run the bakery and take-away,” says Ashley. Business continued to boom and in 2014, they were offered the lease on the former Dirliebane Cafe on Market Square. Even though Cameron had now been joined by second son Callum, the couple decided to open the new venture Cafe in the Square while continuing to run the bakery. “It was absolutely brilliant and going really well, and then we got hit by the floods in 2015,” recalls Ashley. “Steven had left early to open the bakery, taking our car because it was raining. About 8am, he reappeared at home soaking wet to tell me that everything was gone - there was five feet of water in the bakery, swirling the heavy counter around and turning all our stock into sludge, as well as damaging the ovens beyond repair. “The flood had also grabbed the car and swept it down Mill Street into a pile-up of other vehicles. We also couldn’t stop the waters rushing into the cafe - it was absolute devastation! This was our livelihood and also the jobs of the seven or eight people we employed - it was awful! “But that was when the spirit of Alyth, which I always knew was there, really shone through,” continues Ashley. “People turned up that day and in the following days, rolled up their sleeves, got mops, buckets and rubber gloves and just said ‘where do you need us’ - it was amazing. “The bakery was a complete write-off, so we decided to close it down. Things were not quite so bad in the cafe, but we still had to remove the whole floor and put in new self-sealing concrete and also replace the plaster three feet up the walls, as well as buy a new flood-gate for cross the door. With all the help from local residents and tradesmen, we closed down the bakehouse but managed to re-open the cafe with a takeaway counter just a month later and eventually we got back on our feet.” Always thinking about ways to develop the business, Steven and Ashley decided to have a look at the old Royal Bank building across the Square when the new owner asked if they might be interested. “At first, it was hard to envisage how we could convert the bank into a viable cafe, so at first we thought we might leave it,” says Ashley, “but we never stopped thinking about what we might be able to do, so later we found out that the new owner was still thinking we would be an ideal business for his new property.

39

“After the building had been cleared and painted, we could clearly see the potential - a cafe offering the same as we had already, plus a salad bar and soft-scoop ice cream as well as pavement space for tables outside and a lovely room with Victorian plasterwork which would be perfect for a kids’ play area. With two small children of our own, we knew what a draw i t would be for other families to have somewhere the kids can play while the parents enjoy a coffee, but Alyth didn’t really have anything like that,” says Ashley. The new Cafe in the Square and Kidszone opened for business on 4 March this year and has so far been a great success. “Steven still makes our scones and strawberry tarts with fresh dairy cream on the premises every day, and we have a great range of cakes and other goodies available as well, including home-made soup,” says Ashley. “We’re very flexible and can usually cook something from scratch for customers if we have the ingredients, including small-portion meals for some of our elderly regulars with smaller appetites. Lots of mums and dads think the Kidszone is great, and all our regulars from the old Cafe are now coming to the new one. “The feedback has been really, really good, and even after the initial rush we’re far busier than we ever were across the Square. Everyday there are new faces coming in and many of them are becoming regulars. I’m especially glad to say that we brought almost all the staff we had before the flood with us into our new premises, including Doreen who was our first member of staff in the bakehouse, and Kerry who’s been with us since the original cafe opened. We’ve now got eight staff, soon to be nine or 10. It’s been the best move we’ve made, but we’re already thinking about new things we can add to what we offer - there’s plenty of scope here,” says Ashley. The story of Cafe in the Square is a perfect example of the Alyth spirit of community, enterprise and refusal to be beaten down by adversity. As Ashley says: “I love Alyth and we’ll never leave. I love the people in Alyth - they’re so friendly, everyone knows everyone and looks out for them, not just in times of crisis like the flood, and we like to think that the Cafe is contributing to the spirit of community in Alyth.”

National innovator’s award for Alyth businesswoman Local businesswoman Marian Bruce has won the Innovator Award at the 2019 Scottish Women in Business Awards. The award is given for exemplary innovation in products, services or service delivery, and is is open to women working in any field: the arts, sciences, business and voluntary sector. Marian, along with her partner Simon Montador, launched Highland Boundary Ltd last year, making and marketing a unique Scottish wild spirit combining hand-picked birch buds and elderflower with grain spirit. The innovative new tipple was awarded a gold medal at the illustrious San Francisco World Spirits Competition earlier this year beating off competition from nearly 3,000 entries from all over the world. Speaking after receiving her Women in Business Award at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow in mid-May, Marian said: “I feel hugely honoured by Scottish Women in Business. I have met many wonderful and inspiring women at the ceremony and I congratulate all the winners and finalists.”
