In our study of history so far we have learnt about political revolutions – in England and America. Cycle 1 is about revolutions – but they are revolutions that have an impact on everyday life.On 1st May 1851, the Great Exhibition was opened in London by Queen Victoria. It brought together thousands of exhibits, with more than half of them being British. Approximately six million visitors came – many of them ordinary workers. The aim was to celebrate the progress being made in science, the arts and technology. The exhibition also intended to show everyone that Britain was the leading industrial nation – the ‘workshop of the world’. However not everyone felt the same way.

Not as fine yarn as spinning jenny. Had to be put in a factory – needed water power

Spinning Mule Samuel Crompton 1779 Stronger cotton than made by the Spinning Jenny. Spun cotton onto 48 spindles. Finer yarn.

Produced a lot of steam.

Power Loom Edmund Cartwright 1785 Speeded up weaving to help mill owners produce cloth of the same quality.

At first it didn’t work properly. Had to be used in a factory. By 1820s thousands of hand weavers lost their jobs.
