Dear Parishioners,

In the Gospel Jesus presents two

people in prayer, one is a Pharisee

and the other is a tax collector. The

Pharisee is up front, preening him-

self, telling God his merits and

superiority over others, whom he de-

scribes as “extorEoners, unjust, adul-

terers…”….then refers to the fellow:

“like this tax collector”. Instead of the

Lord in front of him he is praying to a mirror. He is standing in the Temple and feels no need

to prostrate himself before the majesty of God. It is obvious that he despises sinners. In this

way he is so far from the heart of God, who loves the sinner.

When we pray it is important to look at the state of our hearts. The Pharisee found his way

to the temple, but his heart had lost the way.

The tax collector prayed simple, “Oh God, be merciful to me a sinner.” What a beauEful

prayer. These words were the key that opens the heart of God. God wishes us to be

humble, not to make us feel bad, but rather through humility he picks us up to himself. The

prayer of the proud does not reach the heart of God, the humility of the poor one opens the

flood gates of his mercy.

Fr. David

“We come nearest to the great when we are great in humility.” Tagore
