The government’s recent changes to the Age Pension could affect your ability to plan for a

comfortable retirement.

Recent reports suggest that more than 300,000 Age Pensioners will have at least part of their

pension cut, with just under 100,000 of these people losing all Age Pension entitlements, taking effect

from January 2017.

How you can prepare for the changes

Depending on how these changes will impact you, there could be a number of things for you to

consider, including:

• If your entitlements are reduced, how will you replace lost income?

• Do your assets need trimming down? We can help you with asset reduction strategies.

• Do you have any large planned expenses, such as a holiday or home repairs for example,

that might reduce your assets before the changes come in.

If you would like to discuss how these changes may impact your financial situation and how

we can work with you on a strategy for retirement, please contact us.

ELAINE Janes, 71, from OceanGrove has competed in five

World Masters Games in the sport of weightlifting. She still trains three days a week and is showing no signs of slowing down. How did you start weightlifting?I was promoting a sport at the Active Australia Day for Club Italia. There were 60 sports there and we set up right next to the weightlifting club. My curiosity forced me over. I don’t know what made me do it, but I joined the club. Now, 14 years later, I’m still fronting up three times a week. Your weightlifting highlights?I’ve competed in five World Masters Games and in every state in Australia. My last worlds was in Italy. At each one I’ve either won a gold, silver or bronze medal. I could still do it but it costs too much to go to the worlds. Are people surprised to find out you’re a weightlifter?I do a lot of talking engagements to promote the sport. I’m a lady and I like to dress up. So when I do go out to talks I dress up. It happens every time that people see me and say “you can’t lift weights”. I say “don’t challenge

me”. You don’t have to be big to be strong. I also do planking which, like weightlifting, requires core strength. I’ve planked with 60kg on my back. What are the benefits of weightlifting? For me it helps fight age, but most importantly it gives me mental strength. I have no family, no top-up support, and it does help keep me mentally strong. It gives me a purpose.Do you follow a special diet?I eat everything, right across the board. But I do make sure I get plenty of protein. I can’t afford supplements so it comes from what I eat.How do you stay motivated? It’s important for me to keep my life

balanced. I have active areas of my life – I do weightlifting, pilates, yoga, walking, gardening, dancing and volunteer work. Then there are the mental things like writing and creating. I’m really enjoying Instagram (@elainejanes16). And relaxation balances my life. I love knitting, going to movies and shows at the Potato Shed. I love motivating people. You are never too old to start doing something new.So, no plans to slow down?People say I’ll still be weightlifting when I’m 80. The benefits are immeasurable but it never gets any easier. I listen to my body and some

days say “that’s enough”.Tell me about your pet chickens? My chooks give me a family to love and care for. They are wonderful chooks and produce top eggs too. I have two young chooks and my old girl, Flapper. She goes everywhere with me – she comes out for coffee, she’s even been a guest at a golf club dinner for 150 people. My chooks keep me sane. They’re good company.Where does your energy come from? The more I do, the more I want to do. I’m making the most of every day. If I say I’m going to do something, I’ll do it. After two major car accidents I value the fact that I’m still here.

Prime time to get involvedRetirement doesn’t mean slowing down and for some it is more time to do things they love

JOHN Birrell, 71, has been a hard worker his entire life. The East

Geelong resident’s dedication to the community and passion for helping others has led him to be involved in more than five volunteer organisations.Tell us a bit about your background.I have lived in East Geelong my whole life. I went to Tate Street Primary and Moorabool Tech. I worked as an electrician for 50 years, 30 spent at Barwon Water where I retired in 2010.

Tell us a little bit about some of the organisations you are involved in.I am the chair of the Social Organisation for the Handicap where we hold dances twice a month, as well as a bus trip once a month where we go on nice outings. I am a volunteer at Bupa Bellarine nursing home, where my brother currently is. I love getting around and talking with all the residents. I am a volunteer at the Rotary Club of Geelong East, which is a fantastic organisation. I am also

and I just love to watch it all. What is your most memorable experience while volunteering? There’s no one thing. Just being able to put back into the community is a reward. There’s no one special time, because every time is so special. What are you hopes for the future of the organisations youare involved in? I hope that they keep going. A lot of these groups are being run by older people, there’s not as many young people being involved which is what they really need to survive. When these people pass on we really need the young blood in there so they can continue to do the work. What would you say to other retirees considering getting involved in volunteer work?Have a go. It is honestly the best experience. It’s not for yourself but being able to help others in need is the way it should be. You meet and help so many people and it is just the best possible way to spend your time.

How you can volunteerWhether you have a few hours to spare now and then or plenty of time to give there are hundreds of volunteer organisations and clubs that could benefit from your help. Volunteer Geelong assists with placing volunteers all around the region. Call 5221 1377 to arrange an appointment with a volunteer information officer or browse the database for positions at volunteeringgeelong.org.au

John Birrell dedicates his time to five organisations including the Uniting Church.

barbeque coordinator for Rotary at the Geelong Showgrounds where we do major fundraising. I am the coordinator at Neighbourhood Watch Newcomb where we hold meetings once a month and update the public on any problems or warnings within the area with help from the police and try to help keep the community safe. And I am involved with the East Geelong Uniting Church where I look after the property amongst other things. What do you enjoy most about volunteering?Making people smile is really why I do it. When I go down to Bupa there are all these poor souls sitting around in their chairs. If I can make just one of those people happy, then that’s all I need. Seeing other people happy is what I enjoy most.

How do you manage your time? You just do it, it all sorts itself out.Do you have any other hobbies?Sport. I love my sport, all kinds. Cricket would be my favourite. I played cricket until I was 60 at the East Geelong Uniting Church Cricket Club, which finished up just after I left. We were the last church team to finish. I also played a lot of badminton

‘It is honestly the best experience, it’s not for yourself but being able to help others.’

Senior livesmatter to Lyn

The wife of a serviceman and her therapy dog have been recognised for bringing cheer

to veterans and their wives

LYN Denbesten and her therapylap-dog Oscar love visiting

hospitals and aged care facilities to help brighten the day of residents and open lines of communication to those who miss out on social and emotional support.

For the veterans and their familiesof the region, Lyn and Oscar give ex-service members and war widows someone to confide in, share tears with and relieve troubles.

Last year, she was awarded the Veteran Community Award at the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards and says she was so honoured to have even been considered.

Judges praised Lyn for not letting

her senior years slow her down, saying her determination to let our veterans and war widows know they have not been forgotten is an inspirational example of someone who is ageing well by helping others.

“I think there are a lot of others outthere who do more than me,” she says humbly.

“But I just really enjoy getting outand meeting and talking with veterans and their wives, they have the most interesting tales to tell and I just feel so privileged.”

Lyn’s experience as the wife of a veteran gives her an emotional connection with those she visits. She never puts a time limit on a stay,

always giving her undivided attention. She frequents the McKellar Centre

where Oscar loves to jump up on the residents’ beds, inhale any crumbs of food they may have left and then sits to be patted.

“Oscar is well accepted and is quickto bring a smile to the resident’s face,” Lyn says.

“They love him, they open up to usand share all of their amazing experiences with us.”

She is also a regular at UniversityHospital and Opal South Valley, where her mother is, and volunteers for the RSL and has been a member of the Geelong and District Vietnam Veterans Association for many years.

This year’s Victorian Senior of the Year Awards will be announced on Tuesday, October 4. To find out more about the awards visit seniorsonline.vic.gov.au/festivalsandawards

Sweet dreamsTake these steps to ensure a good night’s sleep

SLEEP – just like food, water andoxygen – is needed to survive.

We spend up to one third of our lives asleep and getting enough is important for physical and mental health. But how much is enough?

Individuals vary in their sleep needs but most adults generally require 7-9 hours of sleep every night to feel properly refreshed and to function at their best the next day.

Contrary to popular belief, this amount remains similar beyond the age of 65 – older adults often spend more time in bed than younger adults, but usually the requirement for sleep is the same. There are many things you should and shouldn’t do to ensure a good night’s sleep.

Comfort in the bedroom is paramount and the most important item is a good quality mattress.

When buying a mattress for two people, both should be involved in the

decision. Lie on the bed for 10 minutes – you can’t judge if a bed has the correct amount of comfort and support by sitting on the edge.

Warmth is also important – boththe temperature of the room and having enough blankets.

Daytime naps can affect how yousleep at night. But if you are taking short afternoon naps and still sleeping well at night, it’s fine to keep doing this. Just remember it all contributes to your daily sleep requirements.

Try to go to bed at the same timeeach night and wind down in the hour before bed. Taking a warm bath or reading can be beneficial.

Caffeine should be avoided for atleast four hours before going to bed and alcohol can make it difficult to stay asleep too. Stimulating activities such as exercise, computer games and television should be avoided in the hour before going to sleep.

Exercising in the morning or before an evening meal best supports a good night’s sleep and try eating your evening meal at least two hours before bedtime as a full stomach can make it difficult to sleep.

Sound sleep advice1. Develop a sleep routine by going to bed at the same time each night.2. Use the hour before bed to unwind.3. Don’t go to bed on a full stomach.4. You can’t force sleep. If you are not asleep after 20 minutes in bed, go to

another room until you feel tired.5. Remove distracting items in the bedroom like TV, computer or phone.6. Getting sunlight and exercise during the day helps you to sleep.7. Avoid caffeine four hours before bed.8. Create a relaxing bedroom environment and ensure the mattress, pillow and blankets are comfortable.9. Avoid napping in the lead up to bedtime.10. Keep your bedroom for sleeping and intimacy only.

BREAKING THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE Hearing loss can be correctly managed by taking appropriate action such as a screening test

HEARING loss affects one in sixAustralians, with older people

the most likely to experience some form of hearing impairment.

It can affect quality of life across abroad range of areas – it can result in loss of social confidence and it can be

tiring. It can also mean struggling to hear important sounds such as a telephone or doorbell, or warning sounds like approaching traffic or smoke alarms.

For this reason Australian Hearingrecommends a hearing check every two years for people over the age of 50.

“Studies have shown that it can take up for eight years for people to take action on hearing loss,” Angela

Lonergan from Australian Hearing says.

“We want to get that happening abit quicker. If you have got a hearing issue or if you just want some tips – the sooner you take action, the better.”

Typical early warning signs of hearing loss include trouble understanding people unless they are facing you, others complaining that your television is too loud, trouble hearing the phone ring and finding it difficult to follow conversations in noisy places.

And, as hearing loss is often gradual, Angela says friends and family members are usually the first ones to detect a problem.

“We are really wanting people to take hearing on board and take appropriate action if you or a family member is struggling,” she insists.

Australian Hearing offers free screening tests while a new initiative,

Hearing Help, provides online assessments and makes available fully-qualified hearing specialists who are available to help over the phone, online or face-to-face in a hearing centre.

“It’s so easy these days to get help.We have so many different avenues and anything we can do, we are here to help,” Angela explains.

Advances in technology mean treatment is improving all the time. One such example is the new Primax hearing aid which is able to regulate how different sounds are received, and is controlled by a user’s mobile phone.

“And sometimes hearing loss mightnot even require a hearing device,” Angela says. “There are assisted listening devices and even rehabilitation which are effective.”

Find out more by visiting hearinghelp.com.au or calling 1800 740 301 from 9am–7pm, Monday-Friday.

Australian Hearing offers free screening tests.

THE NEW LIFE OF BRIANWhat first drew you to Lifestyle Geelong?I really didn’t want to live in Melbourne anymore. I started looking around and I was drawn to the location. Being so close to the ring road it is still easy for me to get to the city and enjoy Geelong as well.

How has your life changed since moving in?I have been here for three months now, being single in a house on your own used to get very boring. Since moving in my life has been much more interesting, I have a more relaxed lifestyle because there are no pressures and I’ve made new friendships.

What facilities do you use?I enjoy the fact we have a bowling green. I’ve had friends come and visit and we play tennis and cook a barbeque together and play billiards. I haven’t watched a DVD on my TV yet, I always go over to the big screen in the clubhouse where there’s Foxtel too. There’s always community activities on and, as more people move in, the more options there are.

What are the major benefits? The security and cost of living has meant less stresses. I have more freedom now and I really feel like I am still on a holiday with all the facilities.

What advice would you give to others looking to move?Go and have a look around and decide what your needs are. I know people with grandkids have found that the children love it here. Grandkids often get bored visiting grandparents but they absolutely love coming here, there’s so much to do.

DICK Clay is one person who knows well thebenefits of keeping active at any age.

The retired Australian rules footballer, who played 213 games for Richmond throughout the 1960s and 70s, has always maintained an active lifestyle.

He says even now, at 70 years old, he enjoys being outside and keeping physically busy.

“When you retire you have got to be active. Youdon’t last long just sitting around on the couch,” Dick says.

Dick is one of the many older Australians proving that age doesn’t have to mean giving up on an active lifestyle.

In fact, the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle later in life have been well documented.

Regular physical activity helps to control weightand reduce body fat, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and bone and joint problems such as arthritis.

It can also reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke and is also beneficial in reducing stress and anxiety, and improving concentration.

Regular exercise also increases energy levels, promotes better sleep and aids relaxation.

It is recommended that older people accumulateat least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical

“I chose bowls because it’s still a competitive sport,” he says.

“But apart from the competitive side, you make alot of friendships and it’s also just good fun.

“In between bowls you can have a chat to yourfriends. And you go to other clubs and get to meet new people, and create new friendships. There’s a real camaraderie about it.

“It’s a challenge – anything you take on that’s newis always a challenge – and that’s good fun too.”

There are a range of activities to suit any lifestyleor fitness level. Talk to a health professional or visit Dick for more information and advice on staying active at any age.

Taking a brisk walk is a great way to keep active.

activity a day to keep heart, lungs, muscles and bones in good working order.

Brisk walking is an example of moderate intensity activity and there are a multitude of ways to stay active at any age – from gardening to golf, washing the car to water aerobics.

For Dick, who has maintained ongoing physicalactivity throughout his life, lawn bowling has become a favourite pastime in recent years.

After trouble with his wrists three years ago meant he had to give golf away, the four-time premiership player, and Richmond Team of the Century member, was keen to find another activity which suited his lifestyle.

He decided to join the Ocean Grove Bowls Cluband he insists the benefits of partaking in the sport, and keeping active in general, go beyond the physical advantages.

“It’s a challenge — anything you take on that’s new is always a challenge — and that’s good fun too.”

Management Maintenance & Development

AHEALTHY diet is important atany age but becomes particularly

so the older we get. While the amount of nutrients

required is similar to that of other adults, older people often need fewer kilojoules as activity decreases.

For this reason, consideration needs to be given to meals to ensure they are high in nutrients without being too energy dense.

Enjoying a wide variety of nutritious foods from the five food groups every day is important in

maintaining a balanced food intake. There are of course some key

elements of any diet to be aware of.Calcium is an important nutrient

that is essential for good bone health. Along with fluoride, vitamin D and exercise, it is essential in protecting against osteoporosis, which commonlyaffects older people.

Milk and milk products such as yoghurt and cheese are high in calcium, as are fish with soft edible bones like tinned salmon and sardines.

The Australian Dietary Guidelinesrecommend four serves of dairy per day for women over 50, while men aged 50-70 should consume two-and-a-half serves and those over 70 should have three-and-a-half serves of dairy per day.

Drinking enough water is also keyto a healthy diet. Water supports many of the body’s vital functions including hydration, digestion and blood volume.

It also helps to prevent constipation, particularly when combined with a high fibre intake. Wholegrain cereals, wholemeal bread, fresh and dried fruit, dried peas, beans and lentils are all good sources of fibre.

There are also, of course, foods toavoid or limit. Too much salt can increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. As such, older adults should restrict their intake of high salt foods and always choose reduced-salt products.

Consider flavouring meals with herbs and spices instead of adding salt.

Likewise, saturated fats should onlybe eaten very occasionally. Pastries, fried and battered foods, as well as items like chips and chocolate, are usually high in saturated fat and may also contain dangerous trans fats.

Instead, consider fresh fruit with low fat yoghurt as a sweet treat, and choose wholegrain or oat-based options for crumbles or cakes.

A good diet also goes a long way

towards achieving a balanced lifestyle. It helps to maintain a healthy weight, which places less stress on weight-bearing joints such as hips, knees and ankles, further aiding activity.

And always be sure to follow foodsafety guidelines as foodborne illnesses can be particularly severe in older people.

For more advice on achieving a healthy diet, discuss your individual nutritional needs with your GP or an accredited practising dietitian.

Keeping you connectedTaking the plunge into the cyber world can transform your day-to-day life

WITH so many services available online intoday’s tech-savvy world, computers and the

internet can save a lot of time and effort. It’s particularly convenient for people who find it difficult to get around.

Banking, grocery shopping and ordering mealscan all be done online. Tickets to movies or theatres can be purchased at the touch of a button, forms can be lodged with health providers and government organisations, and access to education is at your fingertips.

There’s no denying the advantages of technology, but with advancements taking place at

a seemingly rapid pace, the cyber world can sometimes seem overwhelming – especially for older people who find it unfamiliar.

But, according to The Computer Guys directorGareth Stratton, there’s no need for concern.

“One thing I do find with older people is that they are sometimes quite scared to try new things,” Gareth says.

“They might not have much experience with computers and they worry they’ll do something wrong. They don’t want to touch a button if they’re not sure what it’s going to do.

“My advice is don’t worry – click everything andfind out what it does.

“You’ve got to be a bit adventurous – it’s the onlyway to learn. If you haven’t been introduced to that technology before, try to do everything.

“Be hands-on and get straight into it. A lot of it isconfidence.

“And if you get into trouble the problem can usually be solved pretty easily.”

Gareth says the benefits of technology are immense and include allowing family and friends to stay connected, no matter the geographical barriers.

There are a variety of social media platforms butGareth recommends Facebook as an easy and accessible way to keep in touch with loved ones. Photo sharing capabilities and direct messaging are among its advantages.

“You can have your own groups of people to connect with,” he explains.

“You don’t have to have anyone on there that youdon’t want to, and it’s easy to use.”

Skype is another service that is particularly beneficial to staying in touch with family and friends. It offers instant messages as well as voice or video calls to loved ones worldwide.

“Skype is great for keeping in touch with peopleoverseas and interstate,” Gareth says.

“It’s easy to use and once people learn how to usethat it helps them stay connected.”

Choosing which device best suits your needs is apersonal choice with tablets, laptops, PCs and Macs all offering different strengths. Gareth says it comes down to what best suits individual needs.

“A lot of people choose iPads over laptops because of their portability and because you can’t really muck them up,” he explains.

“Laptops have better performance capabilities sothat suits other people.”

Gareth recommends having a desktop custom built so it is personalised to provide all required features.

“I sit down with people and teach them things and show them things,” he explains.

“I like to spend a bit of time making sure peopleare confident with what they’re using to make sure they get the best out of their computer.”

Technology in tablet form offers a light and portable way to help you stayconnected with people while you travel.

Daryle Dunbar from Jedtec IT Support provided tips for staying cyber safe:■ Ensure you have an antivirus program that is

licensed, up to date and running when your computer is on.

■ Always accept updates from Microsoft for your operating system.

■ If any pop-up windows appear without your prompting be cautious and generally don’t answer them — click the cross to close them.

■ If things don’t feel right they usually are not. If in doubt close your browser.

■ Be cautious about signing up for any newsletters. Read the fine print to ensure you only get what youwant.

■ If something is not working as you expect, don’t hesitate to shut down your computer and, if necessary, turn it off at the power point. If in doubt, seek support from a family member, friend or technician.

■ Never allow anyone to connect to your computer remotely.

■ Never share details of your email account.■ Banks, utility companies and government

departments will never ask for your details and passwords either over the phone or via email.

■ Be cautious about replying to emails from unfamiliar people or organisations. If you don’t know them, delete without opening.

■ Read any email subject lines carefully and be particularly wary of any offering a prize. If you didn’tbuy a ticket in that lottery or competition, don’t claim it — it’s a scam.

ASTRONG body is at the core ofan active and healthy lifestyle.

And an active and healthy lifestylebrings with it many benefits which, in turn, lead to improved quality of life.

It is for this reason the Kieser method of training – a fusion of strength training and physiotherapy – is winning fans of all ages.

Founded in Switzerland in the 1960s, Kieser is designed to increase muscle mass and subsequently improve bone density, cardiovascular health and mental health. It is a world leader in strength and resistance training.

So whether it be for rehabilitation, casual enjoyment or to improve physical performance, the unique training can unlock the potential of every client to enjoy a more active lifestyle.

“The standard of what Kieser offersis usually only found in the world of elite sport,” Kieser Geelong senior physiotherapist Richard Wallace says.

“So outside of that, it’s the best thing – for any age group.”

Richard says Kieser’s method of training is ideal for older participants with programs tailored to suit individual needs and overseen by trained professionals.

“Everybody gets individually assessed by a physiotherapist and we determine what people can do in the gym safely to maximise their training,” he says.

“If you can improve on your strength, it’s going to help in a lot of ways later on.

“It’s giving people confidence theycan exercise and enjoy an active lifestyle.”

Many Kieser clients are middle- aged through to retirees, with the facilities available adding to the appeal.

“A lot of people have had a bad experience in gyms. At Kieser you get a safe, supervised solution.

“It’s a very welcoming and comfortable environment that’s low intimidation. And being a quiet environment it’s quite calming, almost like a mindfulness exercise.

“Our oldest member is in his 90s,”he adds.

“So it’s never too late to start.”

Find out more by visiting kieser.com.au or by calling the Geelong centre on 5221 7555.

Kieser training brings big benefitsIt is never too late to start learning the good things that come from a strength program

Kieser clients experience benefits from the exercise and strength training.

“People who are older need a bit more close care and attention. We make sure they are exercising safely, without the risk of overdoing it and injuring themselves or exacerbating an old injury.

“There are professional staff overseeing their program with regular supervision to make sure they are getting the most out of their training.

“We have clients undertaking rehab following an operation, right up to those who are there to improve their physical performance.

“Some just want to be able to playwith the grandkids without pain. And some people come in without any injuries just to get the benefit of strength training.”

Richard says muscle mass begins togradually decline from the age of about 30. He says undertaking a half-hour program as little as twice a week can offer huge benefits.

“What people do now will greatlyaffect their quality of life later in life,” he explains.

“It’s a very welcoming and comfortable environment that’s low intimidation.”

PLANNING AHEAD FOR SUCCESSGood advice is the all-important first step to a comfortable retirement

ENSURING the joys of retirement are everything you want them to be can heavily

depend on financials. To make the most of your nest egg, good financial planning is key.

Planwell Financial Group financial adviser Callum Howard says he often meets with retirees to discuss advice.

“For me it’s a great space to provide advice in, aswe help people live the retirement they have dreamt of,” he says.

“We are living longer and healthier lives, whichmeans current retirees will most likely need to fund

a retirement that’s longer than past generations, making advice even more important for a happy, healthy retirement.”

He says the three most common questions fromretirees include: How much do I need to retire? Do I have enough to retire? How long will the money last?

“When answering these questions, we basicallyneed to know one thing,” he explains.

“How much do you need to cover your living expenses in retirement?”

Callum says it is important to consider the standard of living you are used to, home ownership, health service needs and Centrelink aid eligibility.

“We will find the best pathway to and through retirement that suits your needs,” he says. “We build investment plans and strategies to help you achieve the best outcomes for your personal situation.”

The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia has considered annual budgets for a modest retirement lifestyle and a comfortable retirement lifestyle.

A modest retirement lifestyle is considered betterthan the age pension but only affords basic activities.

A comfortable one enables a retiree to participatein a range of leisure and recreational activities and have a good standard of living through the purchase of items including household goods, private health insurance, a reasonable car, good clothes, a range of electronic equipment and domestic and occasionally international holiday travel.

The association says a budget for a single personaged about 65 for a modest lifestyle is $23,651 and for a comfortable lifestyle $42,893.

For couples at this age, a modest lifestyle budgetis listed at $34,064 and for a comfortable lifestyle, $58,922.

These budgets assume the retirees own their home outright and are relatively healthy.

Callum says after establishing what someone’s lifestyle expectations are, it is time to set people

Careful planning and budgeting puts you on the right path to a stress-free retirement.

some homework and then establish a budget.“Once we establish income needs, we can

build a retirement and investment plan,” he says.Callum says there are some common mistakes

seniors make when it comes to finances.“One of the biggest mistakes people can make is

not seeking advice,” he says. “A common misnomer is that you need to have

money to invest to see a financial planner, but the truth is we can help anyone to enhance their situation in retirement – be it maximising your age pension, through to ensuring your nest egg is invested correctly, we have strategies to help everyone.”

He says superannuation should also be nurtured.“Another mistake people make is to pull all their

money out of super and put it in the bank,” he says. “Superannuation is arguably the most tax

effective vehicle for your retirement funds, and for those who are over 65, once they pull the money out of super, unless they are working, they are unable to put it back in again.”

Callum says it is never too late to think about finances: “Wealth planning doesn’t end because you retire. It’s important to ensure your savings keep working for you.

MAUIUnderwater or on land, there is so much to do on the palm-lined island. Take in the sights of the sea by having a scuba-diving or snorkelling lesson. A tour of the island’s tropical plantation is a must and an exploration through the 4,000 acre Iao Valley offers breathtaking views of rugged beauty. Have a night on the town and enjoy a dinner and show at one of the many theatre restaurants. But best of all enjoy a lounge poolside, cocktail in hand and soak up those famous Hawaiian rays.

RIO DE JANEIROHost of this year’s Summer Olympics, the Brazilian city is bursting with life and festivity. For those without a fear of heights, Sugarloaf Mountain is an absolute must see. Tours feature a cable car ride admiring the breathtaking views below, including Copacabana Beach, Guanabara Bay and Santa Cruzours. The 38m Christ the Redeemer statue atop Mount Corcovado is another highlight, along with Corcovado’s Cristo Redentor, Morro da Urca and the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.

VANCOUVERGet in touch with nature while you visit this picturesque seaport city. Days could be easily spent in famous Stanley Park where you can hire a bike, stroll along the many paths or hike along the sea wall. Beautiful by day, it also offers stunning Downtown night views. Marine lovers can enjoy a visit to the Vancouver Aquarium which is home belugas, penguins, sea otters and 50,000 other aquatic creatures. The city also has a thriving arts community with many galleries to enjoy.

OSAKATradition meets innovation in Osaka. Indulge in the local cuisine and get lost in the social hub and night life capital Dotonbori. Universal Studios is a must for movie buffs. Cultural sights worth a look include Sumiyoshi-taisha Shrine and Osaka Castle or take a ride on the Tempozan Ferris Wheel.

SANTORINIThe sunsets of Santorini are considered the best in the world, whether you hike down the famous Oia trail or enjoy it from a restaurant or bar, dusk has never looked so magical. A seafood lover’s paradise, it is hard to pick a place to dine in Santorini and friendly Greek restaurateurs only confuse your decision further. When it comes to the final decision-making at dinner time, try to select a western-facing seat so that you can watch the sun as it disappears.

AGE-APPROPRIATE STYLE NEVER OUT OF FASHION

THE rules of fashion are continually changingand, with many trends geared towards a

younger market, it can be challenging to achieve a style-conscious look that is also age appropriate.

But there is also an elegance which comes withmaturity, meaning sophisticated style knows no age limit.

Personal stylist Loretta Whitford says there aresome key rules to keep women and men looking their fashionable best later in life.

“One of the biggest concerns for women is notwanting to look like mutton dressed as lamb,”

Looking good helps you to feel good at any age but choosing the right clothing and accessories can be a challenge. Personal stylist Loretta Whitford offers expert advice

Loretta says. “Or the dreaded granny.”It’s a fine line to get the balance right, but by

following a few simple tips there’s no reason not to look and feel fabulous at any age.

Loretta, who runs styling business Ele PersonalStyling, says knowing what works for your figure is the first step in creating a sophisticated style.

“Remember nothing will look or feel as good asclothes that fit and flatter your body,” she explains.

A classic white shirt and elegant black pants is alook which never goes out of date. It suits most body types and works across a broad age range.

“I KIESER TO KEEP GARDENING”

KIeser Geelong51 West Fyans Street, Newtown VIC 3220 Tel 03 5221 7555

Günther suffered from chronic back pain for over 40 years. When he first came to Kieser, he struggled to bend down to tend to his garden without pain. After going through a program at Kieser, Günther is now able to return to gardening pain-free and, at 67 years old, he is feeling stronger than he has in years.

With only 2x30 minute sessions of Kieser per week, you too can increase your strength, your performance and prevent injury. Become part of the Kieser community and unlock your potential for an active life.

Call now or visit www.kieser.com.au to book your initial consultation.

Likewise, limiting prints and sticking to one or two colours helps create a simple, classic look.

Elastic-waisted pants are generally not flattering,Loretta says, and should be avoided, while boxy jackets can add weight to a frame.

However, jeans are a staple item which suit a range of shapes and sizes.

“Look at some of the brands out there that actually sculpt your bottom,” Loretta says. “Yes they can really do that!”

A bra that is fitted correctly is also a key to looking great.

When it comes to accessories, Loretta recommends wearing one standout piece at a time.

“Go easy with the jewellery,” she says.“Too much heavy gold can visually weigh you

down. Try wearing longer thin necklaces rather than heavy chunky ones.”

And there is much to be said for a fresh hairstyleand even an eyebrow tint.

“And buy a magnifying mirror and tell your friends to do the same,” Loretta insists.

“This is good advice for anyone over 40 when eyesight starts to go and creepy little hairs appear in strange places.”

There is also no need for men to slip in the stylestakes when they reach a certain age.

Loretta says chinos and a polo shirt create a classic everyday look for older men, with a well-cut shirt another popular go-to fashion item.

She says tracksuit pants shouldn’t be worn outside the house, while socks and sandals shouldn’t be worn at all.

And, when it comes to accessories, a little goes along way.

“A watch, necklace or ring is fine but you probably don’t want to be wearing it all at once,” Loretta says.

She also recommends for older people to have

their vision and hearing checked.“Nothing ages you like yelling at everyone

because you can’t hear them,” she says. And grooming, too, can play a role in achieving a

sophisticated look.Keeping eyebrows in check and stray hairs

maintained help to support a sleek overall appearance.

“Borrow your wife’s magnifying mirror. You willneed it from time to time,” Loretta insists.

“Or visit a men’s grooming salon.”

“Remember nothing will look or feel as good as clothes that fit and flatter your body.”

STAYING IN STYLE■ Choose clothes which fit and flatter your body■ Have your bras professional fitted■ Less is more when it comes to jewellery■ Elastic-waisted pants are generally unflattering■ Try jeans which can support and sculpt your

bottom■ Heavy makeup emphasises, rather than

disguises, wrinkles■ Updating your hairstyle can give you a fresh,

new look■ A magnifying mirror is a great investment

Making a will gives you peace of mind about distribution of your assets.

Where there’s a will, there’s less stressAll it takes is half an hour with a solicitor to save loved ones extra grief during a difficult time

AWILL is one of the most important documents a family or

individual will ever make. It provides instructions on how assets are distributed, identifies executors and names guardians for children.

But, incredibly, it often gets overlooked.

Samantha Bennetts, a solicitor atCWP Lawyers, says making a will is a simple procedure which can save loved ones time, money and stress in what can be an already incredibly difficult time.

“If there is no will a person is said to die intestate,” Samantha explains.

“That means they have no controlover who administers their estate and how it is divided.

“There are strict laws in place which may not co-ordinate with a person’s wishes. De facto partners may miss out, children may not get the protection you want and the

estate may be administered by someone you don’t want to administer your estate.

“We definitely recommend seeinga solicitor for this.”

Samantha says a half-hour appointment is usually all that is required to make a will and avoid stress later on.

“We talk about executors – who you want to appoint to administer your will,” she says.

“We discuss beneficiaries and howyou would like your estate to be divided. And any bequests you might like to make such as family heirlooms you would like to appoint to a particular individual.

“It’s a half-hour appointment andwhen you have done it you don’t have to think about it again.

“You might be adamant about whatyou want to do but a lot of people don’t put it in a formal document.

“It makes it as tight as it can be and

saves stress for your loved ones.”As there is no register of wills,

Samantha says it is important to tell your executor where your will is held.

She also advises that a will is reviewed every three to five years, or in the event of a major life change.

“You should look at your will when

you purchase a property or a new asset, or when you go through any significant life changes such as marriage, having children, divorce or separation,” she says.

“It’s not a major process and onceyou have done it you can have solace in the fact your wishes are on paper.”
