MOTORING SUMMER 20164

Harley-Davidson hong kong recently unveiled the new 2016 CVO Pro Street Breakout motorcycle at its Chai Wan showroom.

A product of the brand’s Custom Vehicle Operations, the limited-production model will set you back a cool HK$370,000.

The masculine motorcycle was beautiful and attractive enough to take center stage at the launch event. Yet it was not the only focus. Harley-Davidson announced its first collaboration with US guitar manufacturer Gibson Brands, which is coveted for its range of innovation-driven electric guitars, in a project called “Rockin’ Road” with the overall objective of nurturing and supporting local bands and musical talent.

“Harley-Davidson’s passion to fuel the freedom of self-expression and individuality can be shared and pursued alongside another legendary American brand,” said Josephine Lee, marketing and PR director of Harley-Davidson Hong Kong, adding that the aim of the Rockin’ Road initiative is to promote the development of local creative culture.

The initiative will see a performance by local music talent at the Chai Wan showroom once every two months starting from July.

At the launch event were Alex Juskiewicz, global entertainment relations director of Gibson Brands; Edwin Wilson, historic program manager of Gibson Custom Shop; James Beeton, service manager

Whole hogof Harley-Davidson Hong Kong; celebrated K-Pop guitarist James Kim; and local composer, producer and designer Mark Lui.

Lui, who is a Harley-Dav idson enthusiast , has been very supportive of the distributor of the brand since early this year. To commemorate the collaboration between the two iconic American brands, Lui has designed a special Gibson guitar as a gift to Harley-Davidson.

Powered by the brand’s most powerful 1.8-liter Sc reamin ’ Eag le a i r -cooled, twin-cam 110B engine, the heavyweight CVO Pro Street Breakout promises a high-quality riding experience like no other.

The use of a new set of inverted forks and dual front disc brakes with floating rotors represents slight modifications to the new motorcycle’s mechanical area. It also features reduced reach front brake lever, standard anti-lock braking system, a special 19-inch front wheel and a massive 240mm wide rear tire.

However, the uniqueness of the drag racer-influenced 2016 CVO Pro Street Breakout has to be cutting-edge finishes and textures that are responsible for a new, darker look. The new finish is called Smoke Satin Chrome, involving what Harley-Davidson styling director Brad Richards calls alternate finishes to bright chrome and a second new finish called scorched chrome for the custom wheels.

The motorcycle is available in a choice of two color themes: starfire black/starfire black and white gold pearl/starfire black as seen here.

Revered as the ‘jewel in the Formula One crown’, the FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND

PRIX continues to attract record crowds and global attention. Since its start in 2008, over 200,000 spectators have attended each year for the prime purpose of seeing the finest drivers the world has to offer go head-to-head at speeds of up to 320km/h.

Resting against the backdrop of Singapore’s iconic heritage buildings, modern architecture and stunning skyline is the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The 5.065km racetrack is the center stage of the event. Taking place underneath the night sky, blazing lights and screams of cheering fans, racers will make 61 laps around the track.

The world-class race is accompanied by an equal ly impressive enter tainment program. Performances of international caliber are yet another reason why car enthusiasts are converging in The Lion City. In 2015, over 60,000 were at ‘The Padang’ to catch global rock icon Bon Jovi performing on Singapore’s largest outdoor entertainment stage.

“Singapore is definitely one of the highlights in the international racing calendar. There’s an amazing atmosphere and the whole city really comes to life for the race weekend,” says Nico Rosberg, Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team Driver. “It’s just unreal – I would really recommend anybody to come because it’s a fantastic experience.”

See it LiveAs with last year, four Combination Packages are

available to meet the need for flexible tickets of race enthusiasts, allowing them to experience various parts of the circuit during the three-day event.

Offering a mix of Pit Grandstand, Padang Grandstand and Bay Grandstand, the packages ensure spectators capture all the thrills and action as the cars swoosh past the platform towards iconic landmarks such as the Anderson Bridge.

All ticket-holders can enjoy full-length concerts in addition to the thrilling racing action. Adding to the already festive atmosphere at the Marina Bay Street Circuit are several global music artists. See the Princess of pop Kylie Minogue on Friday (September 16) and catch the dolce tones of Grammy winning American a cappella group Pentatonix during the weekends (September 17 and 18). Other performing artists include: Queen + Adam Lambert, Bastille and KC and the Sunshine Band.

For the 9th year in a row, Singapore will be the center of attention as top racers from around the world gather in an attempt to be the first to drive past the checkered flag at the Formula 1 Grand Prix spectacular.

Imaging you are driving from Central to Taikoo Shing during the late afternoon peak hours. It is a common scene, the east-

bound Gloucester Road is full of traffic, with cars of all sizes vying for spaces before the junction that diverts traffic to the Kowloon peninsula, the eastside of the Island and Happy Valley.

Beyond the junction the traffic opens up a little, but you find yourself in the middle of the road where traffic seems to converge from all directions, and you are not entirely sure of the markings of the lane. It is a tiring and familiar experience for most, but not if you drive the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class with the innovative Distance Pilot DISTRONIC system installed.

Not only is the system able to keep the new E-Class at a confidence inspiring distance behind vehicles in front, it will also gently apply the throttle and brakes, while being watchful for vehicles whose drivers are fond of nothing but squeezing

More than a degree of truth the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class is billed the most intelligent business sedan.

Intelligent like you never experienced in a carMercedes-Benz E-Class

for spaces, thanks to on-board sensors that take other moving vehicles and structure into consideration. Imagine its excellence in rainy days.

The driver assistance system has got a couple of tricks up its sleeve, too, like the fact that it will start the car within 30 seconds following a system initiated stop, and that it can maintain the semi-autonomous driving at a speed of up to 130 km/h. Just don’t try this at such a high speed in Hong Kong.

The Distance Pilot DISTRONIC system, available as an option in the range of new E-Class, is an exemplary example of a multitude of driver assistance system designed to add comfort, convenience and safety of the new car.

The tenth-generation E-Class comes equipped as standard the Active Brake Assist to slow or stop the car in order to avoid causing an accident; Attention Assist to warn the driver of drowsiness; and Crosswind Assist to prevent the vehicle from drifting too far off track by strong crosswinds.

There has been huge development with the Active Brake Assist from the luxury carmaker. The latest development of the system in the new E-Class is its capability to recognize static, stopping object.

For the first time, it can detect the dangerous situation at the tail end of a traffic jam, and activate braking so as to avoid contact with the stationary vehicles on the road. In many countries where driving on highways usually involves high speeds, the difference between braking a fraction of a second earlier may contribute to a significantly less serious accident.

In Hong Kong, meanwhile, heavy congestions can often be seen on highways, and do occasionally catch drivers off guard. The new Active Brake Assist can mean the difference between a fuss free drive to the destination and an unscheduled visit to the maintenance center.

The new E-Class boasts other proven, refined and brand new systems, including Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, PRE-SAFE®PLUS, and a MULTIBEAM LED headlamps each with 84 individually controlled LEDs. But the vehicle is not only about an excellent range of driver assistance systems.

The Active Lane Keeping Assist can be a ver y useful feature to have in Hong Kong. It can help stop the driver from changing lane unintentionally to reduce the risk of collision.

Clothed in a sleek, coupe-like four-door sedan body is an intelligent business sedan that features an entirely new interior design of unsurpassed materials and craftsmanship. Customers can opt to have the cutting-edge high-resolution displays made up by two wide screens of 12.3 inches, and choose among three styles of instrument displays: Classic, Sport and Progressive.

That is impressive, but the carmaker offers more. For the first time in a car, touch-sensitive control buttons (Touch Controls) are set on the steering wheel to control the entire infotainment system using finger swipes, in a way people now are using their mobile device.

The design is a bonus in terms of safety as drivers can get their hands on the steering wheel every time when they decide to get connected to the phone or the audio system. Talking of which, Mercedes-Benz has reinforced the listening experience of the occupants of the new E-Class by optimizing the body structure

as a resonance chamber. The standard system can be satisfying for most people, but for those who won’t settle for the second best, there is the option of the Burmester 3D sound system with 23 loudspeakers.

The levels of depth of the Burmester® high-end 3D Surround Sound System is matched by nothing but the highly personalized lighting atmosphere made possible by an interior ambient lighting system of 64-colour LEDs. It adds to the wonders of a cabin by

showering soft light to a wide range of details. The more spacious new E-Class, which grows in dimensions

compared to its predecessor, is available in three body styles; Exclusive, Avantgarde and AMG Line, with the latter two featuring a prominent pointed star on the front grille and a suspension lowered by 15 millimeters. In addition to body trims developed by the famed AMG division, the AMG Line boasts a more sophisticated, multi-chamber, air suspension system befitting the name.

At the start of the launch in the territory, the new E-Class is available in three versions with different engine configurations: the E 200, E 300 and E 400 4MATIC. Each engine option is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission contributing to smooth acceleration and contained fuel consumption and emissions.

No matter which version you choose, though, the new E-Class is a key to relaxed and safe driving, taking much of the less interesting part of city driving in Hong Kong out of the formula. And with a prestige matched by few others.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

As a sophisticated MPV, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class has no equal. In terms

of dimensions, the 5 meters plus overall length of the vehicle, which is available in two body lengths, is easily among the biggest and most spacious MPVs in the market. Its well-crafted interiors are worthy of a car that features a pointed star on its front grille.

Characterized by a sleek body design, the premium MPV has just turned a new chapter, becoming the first Mercedes-Benz MPV to feature the AMG Line, adding a touch of sportiness as well as

the emotional factor to a vehicle that is well-known for comfort

and safety. There are AMG trims and features plus the employment of new tech components.

The new Mercedes-Benz V 250 d AMG is set to appeal

to customers who appreciate added individuality and sportiness

in a spacious MPV. It will be an ideal choice for big families, as well as business owners and people who have keen eyes for style.

The vehicle made its international debut last year at the Frankfurt motor show. Its style won critic’s acclaim and public recognition. The introduction of the new AMG Line is considered a logical move by

Mercedes-Benz. In the past the popularity of the V-Class has bred a raft of after-market modifications, clearly signaling the potential of more individualistic AMG Line versions.

Like other AMG Line versions, the exteriors of the V 250 d AMG get aesthetic updates. Up front, the revised, more dynamically shaped bumper features more distinct air inlets. The MPV’s sportiness is further enhanced with a diamond-pattern mesh grille, more pronounced side sills, more expressive rear spoiler and a newly designed rear apron that reminds people of the all-conquering racing cars of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.

The vehicle also features a set of exclusive 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels. Through the seven-twin-spoke rims one will take note of another nice touch of the new line, a 17-inch braking system and brake calipers with Mercedes-Benz lettering.

After all the aesthetic modifications, one naturally comes to expect that the AMG Line version is to become a more handling-focused MPV. In this regard, the new vehicle showcases a new set of sport suspension that comes with 15 millimeters of reduced height, supplemented by a taut spring and damper set-up.

Marking the first time the AMG division has got behind a Mercedes-Benz MPV, the new V 250 d AMG is more than just good looks.

Fast lane emotionMercedes-Benz V 250 d AMG

The sport suspension is expected to offer the MPV increased stability in high-speed cruising, as it is necessary on a lot of high flowing highways in the territory and beyond. There will be added handling along the twisty roads in many parts of Hong Kong, too.

Customers who are looking for the utmost comfort and tractability will likely get the optional feature of Agility Control suspension. Modification made to the damping system allows the MPV, as in other Mercedes-Benz cars, to optimize the ride quality.

Thanks to the updated AMG changes, the Mercedes-Benz V 250 d AMG looks great from the outside; it is just as excellent inside.

For a start, the V-Class features the largest panoramic roof in the segment, measuring 1.90 x 1.12 meters, allowing in plenty of natural light. A two-piece construction, the glass roof is made up of an electronically-controlled glass sliding roof at the front and a fixed glass section at the rear.

As many people may find the summer sun in Hong Kong too much to bear or the weather conditions change too quickly, there is a two-section roller blind to block the light. Thanks to the rain sensor the panoramic roof is automatically moved to the tilted position when rain is detected,

excellent for when you stop the car on the roadside to let in fresh air when the weather changes for the worst.

The dashboard design and instrument cluster of the V 250 d AMG retain the classy, uncompromised atmosphere of the current crop of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The materials and craftsmanship used are first-rate in the segment, while the ergonomics are sound and the technologies advanced. The AMG Line has that extra emotional appeal in that the round air vents are finished in silver chrome, and the sports pedal cluster in brushed aluminum, in addition to carbon-fiber look trim and a black headlining.

Powered by a 2.1-liter turbocharged diesel engine with a maximum output of 190hp and a peak torque of 440Nm, the driver of the V 250 d AMG will surely find the vehicle with plenty of vigor.

Yet, the biggest advantage of the Euro 6 compatible engine is its extremely low fuel consumption and emissions figures. On average it consumes 6.0 liters of fuel per kilometers, emitting 157g CO2 per kilometer of driving. Hardly any people carriers in the local market, big or small, are close to those figures.

The Mercedes-Benz V 250 d AMG is very likely a trend setter that is here to stay.

Innovation and success have been the hallmarks of sports car legend Porsche. This tradition of excellence continues with the latest versions of the outstanding 911 Carrera.

ANOTHER GRIPPING CHAPTERThe new Porsche 911 Carrera

The latest Porsche 911 Carrera models recently introduced in Hong Kong are

much more than a mid-cycle update of a highly acclaimed generation of the world’s most successful sports car. Commonly recognized to be the 991.2 to show the lineage, the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S are powered by two new, headline-making engines. They also come with a raft of advanced features adopted from other exclusive Porsche models.

Over the decades since the original Porsche 911 won the hearts and minds of enthusiasts in the 1960s, the carmaker has taken pride in engineering changes that were groundbreaking at the time, the changes that Porsche customers have since taken for granted.

Porsche introduced Tiptronic automatic transmission and four-wheel drive Carrera 4 as options for the 964 generation; changed air-cooled engines to water-cooled engines in the subsequent 993 generation; embraced racing-based technology in the shape of Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission and other features that make the car faster, more driver-friendly and efficient. Each significant change represented a new

chapter in the book of the iconic sports car.Porsche devotees have long anticipated

the coming of a new era. That extends to the brand being a responsible global corporate citizen, including fulfilling its commitment to reduce gaseous emissions across its range of vehicles. To that end, the Zuffehausen-based company has for the first time in the history of the Porsche 911 Carrera family fitted turbocharged flat six engines to the sports car.

Anyone who appreciates the new Porsche 911 Carrera models from the outside, however, will have a hard time telling the new twin-turbo engines apart from the preceding normally aspirated engines. Porsche has gone that extra step to ensure the sonorous identity, as well as the responsiveness, of an engine with which the marque is so famously associated.

As in the past, the Porsche 911 Carrera family is further divided into two versions, the Carrera and the Carrera S. Both employ a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat six cylinder engine, but the difference in compressors used and auxiliary parts ensures that the two versions come with distinctive driving characteristics, efficiency and fuel

consumption, in addition to output. The Carrera engine has a maximum

output of 370 horsepower while that of the Carrera S features 420 horsepower. Both represent an increase of 20 horsepower over their respective predecessors. The maximum torque of the engines, meanwhile, are now 450 Nm and 500 Nm respectively, or 60 Nm more than the engines they replace, generously available between 1,700 to 5,000 rpm. More importantly, the new turbocharged engines freely rev up to 7,500 rpm, thus retaining the lure and personality of typical racy Porsche engines.

T h e p o we r h i k e t r a n s l a t e s t o performance, too. For example, the Carrera with PDK transmission and optional Sport Chrono Package sprints from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, or two-tenths of a second faster than its predecessor. The Carrera S, again with PDK and Sport Chrono Package, even breaks the magic 4 second mark with a sprint time reduced to 3.9 seconds. The Carrera S sports a top speed of 308 km/h. It is the set of performance reminiscent of the mighty 911 Turbo.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera is much more than power, however.

The exteriors of the new Porsche 911 Carrera received a timely all-round update. Up front the more sculptured bonnet is flanked by new headlights, which now feature four-point daytime driving lights that are fast becoming the identity of a new wave of Porsche vehicles, among them the Le Mans winning 919 Hybrid, no less. There are also new, larger air inlets.

Characterized by a classic 911 silhouette, the side view of the new Carrera embraces clean door handles without recess covers. Followers of the Carrera will certainly have no problem pointing to a redesigned rear lid with vertical instead of horizontal louvers. Those who specify the optional sports exhaust system will get twin exhaust pipes set close to the middle section under the rear bumper; otherwise, there are two exhaust pipes on either side of the rear bumper for the Carrera, and quad pipes for the Carrera S. The rear lights have a new design too, which is now slightly indented, and boasts four point brake lights.

The cabin of the new 911 Carrera retains the high quality materials and ergonomically sound design flair of the multiple award-winning interiors of the current 991 generation cars. Yet there are changes to make this cabin the best ever.

First, the steering wheel is derived from the extraordinary 918 Spyder and, like that found in the hybrid hypercar, it features a mode switch for the cars fitted with Sport Chrono Package; the driver can change the personality of the car by having different settings on the switch.

Second , t he re i s a new Po r sche Communication Management System (PCM) including online navigation module and voice control, offering a driver real-time traffic information for improved navigation. The technology is no doubt a welcome assistance for the driver to make his or her journey as enjoyable as possible. Just imagine not getting

struck in heavy traffic when you take a leisurely drive along the beautiful coast in Sai Kung or Island South. In addition, the new PCM features seamless WiFi connectivity, and the option of using Apple CarPlay for extended features.

Each new generation of the Porsche 911 is expected to be dynamically superior to the preceding one. The same can be said of this 991.2 generation which comes fitted as standard the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). In view of the slightly changed weight distribution thanks to the revised engines and body parts, the suspension of the new Carrera is subtly modified with a new set of shock absorbers to increase the spread between comfort and dynamic driving. In addition, the rear rims are now 11.5 inches (plus 0.5 inch) and the rear tires featured on the Carrera S are now 305 millimeters adding to the car’s stability.

Additionally, customers of the Carrera S can choose to have the active rear-axle steering option made famous by the 911 Turbo and 911 GT3. The much acclaimed steering system adds to stability in high speed land changing maneuvers, while reducing the turning circle by 0.5 meters, surely making a difference in tight parking spaces.

Another feature which drivers in Hong Kong must find useful is the optional hydraulic lift system which raises the front axle by 40 millimeters within 5 seconds at the touch of a button. Handy for people when negotiating speed bumps and the like.

With so many Porsche 911s in the past that have proved to be true classics, it is never wise to claim that the latest 911 Carrera is the best ever. Yet, for its engines’ increased performance, efficiency and the car’s optimized comfort, the new Carrera and Carrera S will surely be remembered as a chapter turning generation in the history of the most successful sports car in the world.

The Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2 possesses a uniqueness and purity rarely found in the motoring world.

Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2

By combining a normally aspirated, high revving V10 engine with a light weight

structure, a racing inspired dual-clutch transmission, and a rear-wheel drive layout, not only is the new Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2 quick and agile, but it is also distinctive and peerless.

Closely related to the outstanding Huracán LP 610-4, the latest Huracán LP 580-2 retains the hybrid aluminum and carbon fiber frame, while the body panels are made of aluminum and composite material.

However, it boasts a personality that is quite extraordinary when viewed alongside its sibling. While the former is sure-footed, confidence-inspiring and efficient in getting the engine’s torque and power down on the road via the four driving wheels, the latter was created to be lively, challenging a driver’s skills, and the engine’s torque and power will constantly be threatening to push the limits of the rear driving wheels.

The Huracán LP 580-2 employs a rear-wheel drive system and comes with dedicated steering set-up for improved agility, as well as specific stability and

traction control set-up. The new model promises to make up for dispensed traction with added driving fun. In a way similar to various light-weight versions created by the carmaker, it is a member of an exclusive group of Lamborghinis.

The car is without the front axle driving gears and center differential, saving around 33 kilograms thanks to the operation. The new car is a ticket to what Lamborghini calls the most sincere reactions from the road. “The real fun in driving comes when you realize that you’re not just driving, you’re acting like a driver,” claims the Sant’Agata Bolognese-based carmaker.

Car lovers around the world tend to have a soft spot for headline-making numbers. Budding car lovers often develop their fondness for fine sports cars at a young age. Part of this is due to having fallen into the trap of being haunted by numbers at one time or another; horsepower output, acceleration times and, more a recent phenomenon, lap time around famous racing tracks. In other words, they are mesmerized by the on-paper performance of cars, in particular sports cars.

For people who continue to be obsessed with numbers, the new Huracán LP 580-2 may not make perfect sense. To start with, compared to the four-wheel drive LP 610-4, it comes packed with about 30 horsepower less from the engine; and the fact that with two fewer driving wheels up front, and hence the overall reduced traction, by the time the two reach 100 km/h from a standing start, the LP 610-4 will edge ahead of the LP 580-2 by about a car’s length.

Yet, the Huracán LP 580-2 is no slouch. When pushed, it hits 100 km/h from standstill in 3.4 seconds, and the 200 km/h mark is reached in another 6.7 seconds, and under the right circumstances, the supersports car reaches a top speed of 320 km/h.

However, as a prestigious sports car manufacturer for over half a century, Lamborghini knows very well how to be more entertaining and rewarding from the driver’s perspective. The Huracán LP 580-2 is more for driving purists, who cherish throttle adjustability around a corner more than a fraction of a second around a racing track.

Since its unveiling a few months ago , images and footage have appeared in n u m e r o u s c a r r e v i ew i n g publications and social media platforms by car reviewers around the world. Judging by the fact that many of the car reviewers seem to grin widely in front of a camera, this Huracán LP 580-2 is a pleasurable set of wheels.

One of the main reasons for the Huracán to be able to offer a high degree of adrenaline rush to the driver is the use of the proven 5.2-liter V10 engine that can rev screaming past 8,000 rpm with ease. At a time when most sports car manufacturers opt to take the easy route out of forced induction to raise the torque and power output of an engine, Lamborghini sticks to the most coveted engineering beauty of a normally aspirated engine, improving every single element of it in order for it to have the desired horsepower output and responsiveness.

For those who can tell the subtle difference between lags and instant response, a powerful and responsive normally aspirated engine will forever be more preferred. In addition, the Lamborghini V10 boasts a multi-faceted, orchestral sound that changes as the pistons work their way up the speeds; its high-revving pitch may be likened to a voice of an untouchable tenor in an opera.

The aggression of the engine can only be matched by the unmistakably Lamborghini style. To show different personalities between the two,

the Huracán LP 580-2 is distinguished from its four-wheel drive family member with new sets of front and rear bumpers, exhaust pipes, front and rear grills, and an exclusive set of 19-inch Kari rims.

Ins ide the cabin, the interior of the Huracán LP 580-2 uses only top-notch materials. The leather used in the upholstery, whether it is used to cover the seats, panels or steering wheel, is checked by experienced workers in the factory for minor defects unseen by most people.

The cabin retains the endless possibilities common of other Lamborghini vehicles for color and trim. In addition to a multitude of colors for the leather, customers can specify the use of customized carbon fiber floor mats as well as floor mats with customized edges.

The readily adaptation of advanced technology also makes the Huracán LP 580-2 surprisingly user-friendly for daily use. The Bluetooth compatible, multimedia system employs a 7-inch high-definition TFT color display, making it ideal for satellite navigation. It can also be used to show images of the rear-view camera to add to the car’s convenience and safety.

At HK$3.58M inclusive of the FRT, the cutting edge Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2 comes with the added allure of being very competitively priced for the supersports car segment. For sheer driving enjoyment, there is hardly any better sports car.

The highly acclaimed Nissan Elgrand has won the accolade of King of MPV for good reason. As a pioneer model in the luxury

MPV segment, it has offered a list of segment-specific equipment and features that were initially unseen in other models.

One of the said features is the world’s first one-touch auto sliding doors with anti-theft function, controllable by the advanced remote control car key knob, or Nissan’s own Keyless Go system. The feature has since been imitated by most car manufacturers that wish to take a share in various segments of the MPV market.

Another trend-setting characteristic is the installation of the sophist icated air puri f icat ion system with its advanced climate control feature, creating a cabin that will help prevent the growth of health-threatening viruses and mold spores. This is the kind of feature that comes in handy in Hong Kong, a city that is not particularly known for having good air quality, yet only a few other MPVs offer such a significant system.

However, the uniqueness about the Elgrand being a luxury MPV is the fact that it comes with a

low centered gravity package that has no equal in the market. The vehicle measures just 1,815 millimeters in height, allowing its driver a piece of mind when entering a covered carpark in Hong Kong.

The lower overall height of the Elgrand is made possible by a platform made with a front-wheel drive system and a space-saving suspension setup. Huge advantages of the construction include a low center of gravity, adding stability and ease of entering and leaving the cabin for passengers.

With the seven seats (including the driver’s seat) divided into a 2+2+3 configuration, the Nissan Elgrand is among the most comfor t-oriented luxur y MPVs in the market. It offers three captain seats, including the front passenger seat and two individual, second-row seats, with seat cushion-integrated Ottoman feature, as well as articulated seatback and three-layered cushion pads for excellent body support.

The vehicle also has one of the best crafted cabins. The center control panel is designed with

excellent ergonomics with the driver in mind, while the dashboard wood trims extend to the door panels, creating a luxurious ambience.

The atmosphere of the cabin is further accentuated for its airy feel by the twin power glass roofs and wide windows, of which the blinds are factory-fitted. Trivial mention, you may think? But you will appreciate its quality and the quietness when you know that some vehicles in the market can never seem to get the annoying clatter of retrofitted accessories sorted.

The Elgrand comes equipped with, again, factory-fitted car entertainment system with music box, DVD and aux-in USB, offering seemingly endless connecting possibilities. The infrared headphones promise the ultimate entertainment experience to individuals, while the driver can enjoy a high level of driving pleasure undisturbed.

The vehicle is not all about carrying people, though. The electrically-controlled, foldable third-row seats slide forward to increase the luggage carrying flexibility of the MPV, making it ideal for people setting off to cross border journeys for a round of golf. When the third-row seats are folded flat (at the touch of a button), there is enough space for a multiple set of golf clubs and suitcases.

The Elgrand comes with two power options to suit the needs of different customers. The Elgrand 250 features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine capable of producing 170 horsepower, whereas the Elgrand 350 comes equipped with a multiple awards winning 3.5-liter V6 engine rated at 280 horsepower. Both engines are mated to the proven Xtronic CVT transmission with adaptive shift control system. The highly refined engine and gearbox combination offers unrivalled quality in smoothness and power delivery.

While the former engine is adequate to move occupants around town in great comfort, help reduce fuel consumption and gaseous emissions, the latter will add that extra refinement and responsiveness during long haul trips, making it ideal for people who wish to offer the most comfortable set of wheels for business partners when there is a need to cover long distances.

Importantly the Nissan Elgrand is an extremely safe vehicle to be in. Again, the low centered gravity package offers stability matched by few in the class. The presence of a comprehensive range of 10 airbags, plus the body with high rigidity, meanwhile, allows the luxury people carrier extraordinary protection to occupants.

The Nissan Elgrand has stood the test of time. It has drawn competition in the class, for its space, equipment and comfort, but as the King of MPV it has never been surpassed.

Making the best of a low centered gravity construction, the Nissan Elgrand ensures the comfort-oriented details live up to customer expectations of a classy MPV.

Rolls-royce motor cars unveiled the new Dawn in Hong Kong recently. Presented by the Goodwood-based

luxury carmaker as “the world’s most uncompromised super luxury drophead motor car,” the HK$6.9 million 2+2 convertible is an object of desire that is, frankly, out of reach for the majority of the human race.

That the event took place at a custom-built site on Star Street, a chic neighborhood in Wan Chai close to the premium commercial district in Admiralty, was extraordinary.

At the unveiling ceremony were Michael Schneider, Rolls-Royce Asia Pacific regional general manager; David Kim, Rolls-Royce Asia Pacific regional sales manager; Peter Goh, managing director of Sime Darby Motor Group; and Samuel Sun, general manager of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Hong Kong.

Viewed by many as the convertible version of the modern Wraith, which made its debut in 2013, the Dawn is an independent model, according to Rolls-Royce.

The carmaker supports its claim with the fact that more than 80 percent of the components used in the Dawn are new.

“The Dawn also has an individual personality and it is the sexiest and most desirable Rolls-Royce ever designed,” Kim said.

A careful look by untrained eyes will spot the different grille, rims, beltline and just about any metal panels used by the Dawn and the Wraith.

However, there is no denying that under the skin the Dawn shares the fundamental structure and drivetrain of its sibling, including the distinctive coach doors, the 6.6-liter V12 turbocharged engine rated at 563bhp and eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

If really pushed, it can hit 100km/h off the light in less than five seconds.

Not only is the Dawn quick, it is also well connected. It features some of the most advanced infotainment systems in

any luxury car. The multimedia interface and navigation system have been

updated with a new 10.25-inch high-definition screen, voice command, and the touchpad recognizes Latin, Arabic and, crucially, Chinese characters.

The Dawn may easily be the most silent convertible in the world, too.

Rolls-Royce is confident that with the fabric roof closed the Dawn is as silent as the Wraith. Remarkably, the way the roof closes and opens is also characterized by no sound at all.

Executives of the brand’s regional office talked about the markets of the Dawn, pointing out that Rolls-Royce has shown a trend of being able to attract more female customers and a younger clientele.

They are also adamant that this Dawn sees no competition from the automotive world, but high-end jewelry and collectible art pieces.

Only time will tell if the Dawn will ever be a collectible Rolls-Royce.

At the launch are, from left, David Kim, Samuel Sun, Peter Goh and Michael Schneider.

The biggest news for Maserati so far this year was, of course, the recent launch of the Levante, billed the Maserati of SUVs by the Modena-based carmaker (although the Levante is

being manufactured in Turin). In the not too distant future, enthusiasts of the Trident marque

will celebrate the arrival of the Alfieri coupe. If our friends at the brand local importer, Auto Italia, are to

be believed, neither will be quite prepared to greet customers in Hong Kong this year, though. Instead, they have been preoccupied with the challenge of convincing customers to take one of the rare special editions home.

In the wake of the Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition (limited to 100 units) launched last year, Maserati and the fashion house join hands again to make the Ghibli S Ermenegildo Zegna Edition. It is worth noting that the word Limited is missing here, despite the fact that Hong Kong gets an allocation of just three units.

Available at HK$1,488,000, the Ghibli S Zegna attracts a healthy premium over the starting price of a regular Ghibli S. The price difference of a quarter of a million Hong Kong dollars seems difficult to justify at first, but our trusted friends at Auto Italia think otherwise.

The Ghibli S Zegna comes standard with a lengthy list of additional features, said Isa Kwok from the marketing and communications department of the company. Adding up the cost

of individual options and a customer will pay HK$1,648,000 for a similarly equipped Ghibli S. It is difficult to argue with a well-prepared marketer.

Assuming a customer is to specify all the 13 optional features for her Ghibli S, she will end up saving HK$160,000 if she can get her hands on one of the three units.

The most distinctive feature of the Zegna Edition, seen from the outside, is a set of new Titano Antracite 21-inch alloy wheels, while a standard Ghibli S has a set of 18 inches.

Through the rims you can see a set of red brake calipers, another cost option in a standard Ghibli S.

More exclusive features are to be found inside the cabin, though.A customer of the Zegna Edition has a choice of two colors

for the upholstery, in brown or red. The leather, in either color, is matched by the unique Zegna micro-chevron silk in grey, resulting in an extraordinary combination of fine materials and colors.

The silk derived fabrics has taken Ermenegildo Zegna years of R&D to finish. In addition to being soft to touch, the fabrics is said to be strong enough to be durable.

Other standard features with the Zegna Edition include sunroof, carbon fiber trim, sport pedals, aluminum gear shift paddles, rear view camera, a premium sound system, easy entry package, Bluetooth compatibility and a power boot lid.

I tempted to think, that the Ghiblis S Zegna is also the ticket to an exclusive club of special Maseratis.

Audi Hong Kong hosted a ceremony for its new Audi R8 flagship supercar recently at the IFC Mall in Central,

attracting more than 1,000 guests during the four-day exhibition.

Taking centerstage was a red Audi R8 V10 Plus, a 610hp rated, mid-engine, four-wheel drive, two-seat supercar that comes with a price tag of HK$3.385 million – and pretty much everything one can reasonably expect for a car at such a price.

The second-generation R8 is built on the brand’s Audi Space Frame multimaterial, lightweight technology, featuring aluminum and carbon fiber parts. Most of the future owners of the new car will no doubt appreciate the well-made interiors and innovative display, too.

The car’s quattrro four-wheel drive system is also new, but it’s safe to assume that not all customers of the car will bother to take note of the new system.

When the first batch of the car’s yearly allocation is available this year, the V10 Plus will be joined by the regular V10 model, which comes with a slightly down-tuned, 540hp engine and at a price of HK$2.795 million.

Now, allow us to go back to the ceremony, themed “Born on the track. Built for the road.” Made possible only after huge effort by the host, it was an exhibition befitting the new R8.

Red hot

At the launch are, from left, Alex Yoong, Marchy Lee, Rene Koneberg and Edoardo Mortara.

In addition to being a formidable force on track, the R8 has also won the hearts of enthusiasts around the world.

“Audi has sold approximately 27,000 units of the first generation of R8,” said Rene Koneberg, managing director of Audi Hong Kong, adding that the territory is home to about 200 units of the first-generation R8.

At the ceremony the host was joined by three Audi affiliated racing drivers: three-time Macau GT Cup winner Edoardo Mortara, former F1 driver and champions for two consecutive R8 LMS Cup season Alex Yoong and champion of the inaugural Audi R8 LMS Cup Marchy Lee.

The trio talked about their motorspor t experiences and aspirations, making special reference to the new R8 LMS, a GT racing car “built on the bones of the new R8 road car.”

There was also an R8 LMS race car. It will be the set of wheels used by local racing ace Lee in the coming Audi R8 LMS Cup 2016, a one-make race series developed under the care of Koneberg in 2012. The year’s series starts next month in Shanghai.

The exhibition is not only about the highly desirable R8, it must be added.

The attention of passersby was drawn also to the installation Spotlights by Humans since 1982, a Stockholm-based designer studio co-founded by Per Emauelsson and Bastian Bischoff.

Marchy Lee says the latest R8 LMS race car is a lot faster than the old one.

Based in Crewe, a town about 60 kilometers south of Manchester

in England, Bentley has long gained recognition for being a manufacturer of some of the finest, most luxurious and sporty cars in the world.

At least for the time being, it will be remembered as the producer of the world’s fastest and most expensive SUV too.

That’s the Bentayga SUV, which Bentley Hong Kong launched early this week in Repulse Bay.

At the ceremony were general manager of Bent ley Hong Kong and Macau, Raymond Choi, and the chief interior designer of Bentley, Darren Day.

Choi said the new Bentayga is an authentic Bentley, featuring unrivalled luxury, high performance, exceptional off-road capability and great practicality.

Raymond Choi, general manager of Bentley Hong Kong and Macau, left, and Bentley chief interior designer Darren Day.

Perhaps many people will be surprised that the HK$4.242 million Bentayga is a very capable off-roader, but car critics around the world seem to have confirmed the point. The drivetrain is an impressive one. The Bentayga comes equipped with a six-liter W12 twin-turbo engine capable of producing 608ps and 900 Nm.

The huge torque is transferred to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

If the impressive performance figures are any gauge, the 3.25-ton mass seems to be very manageable. It is said to hit 100 km/h from standstill in a mere 4.1 seconds, and in the right conditions it will top 301 km/h.

Bentley equips the Bentayga with perhaps the most comprehensive driver assistance and safety features ever seen in an SUV: traffic-sign recognition, reverse-traffic warning, pedestrian warning, and a night-view camera, to name a few.

Guests at the launch ceremony appreciated the interiors, which are as meticulously put together as any Bentley.

Day said that the Bentayga has the world’s most sophisticated cabin, offering occupants unsurpassed luxury experience.

It is generally expected that the Bentayga will be rather well received by the super affluent customers. Some expect the two Bentley dealers in Hong Kong would have sold in excess of 20 units by now.

The first batch of Bentaygas is set to be registered within the month. Customers who pay the deposit now can have one in their garage within the year.

BMW Concessionaires Hong Kong recently unveiled the second diesel engine-powered crossover SUV following the launch of the X5 xDrive30d years ago.

The X1 sDrive18d, with a two-liter turbocharged diesel engine, appears in BMW showrooms alongside the gasoline engine-powered X1s.

The second-generation X1 has been a popular choice for the young who have an active lifestyle since its introduction late last year. The addition of a frugal diesel engine is set to be embraced by users who regularly cover long distances.

The diesel engine, which is EU6 emissions standard compatible, offers agile power deliver y and excellent responsiveness even at low engine speeds, according to BMW. The advanced engine employs variable turbine geometry and common rail direct injection, which is all about highly precise fuel injection, to ensure low fuel consumption and gaseous emissions.

Between 4.3 and 4.5 liters of diesel is needed per 100 kilometers. If you get diesel at regular pump prices – currently around HK$10.65 per liter – and manage to get to the official figures, the SUV will likely cost as low as HK$0.46 to HK$0.48 per kilometer.

The X1 sDrive18d shares with its gasoline engine-powered siblings the eight-speed automatic transmission. Closely related to the 2-Series Active Tourer, it uses a front-wheel drive layout, same as with the X1 sDrive20i. The compact crossover has won critical acclaim for its space, practicality and driving pleasure since its launch. A nice touch is the fact that the luggage compartment can be enlarged at the touch of a button thanks to the foldable backrest of rear passenger seats.

The second-row seats, divided into 40-20-40, can themselves be moved forward by 130 millimeters, allowing greater luggage carrying flexibility. What’s more, even at the most forward position, three average adults can still get a reasonably comfortable ride.

As can be expected, the diesel-powered X1 retains the handsome look of the model, complete with full LED headlamps. It runs on a set of 17-inch aluminum wheels.

The panoramic glass roof and metal roof rails, however, are optional.

The vehicle comes standard with a good range of equipment, including a two-zone automatic air-conditioning system, switchable start/stop function, power driver’s seat, multifunctional leather steering wheel and good safety features.

It also gets a nice infotainment system with USB and Aux-In ports, while the iDrive multimedia system features a 6.5-inch monitor.

However, it is wor th noting that the standard X1 sDrive18d, priced at HK$369,900, features only synthetic seat covers, and the “Dakota” leather seats are an option that costs HK$20,000 plus tax.

The Q30 is available in three specifications. Alongside the four-wheel drive 2.0t Sport AWD are the 1.6t GT Theme (1.6-liter turbocharged engine, 156ps) and the 2.0t GT (2.0-liter turbo engine, 211ps, front-wheel drive). All employ a double-clutch automatic transmission.

To be honest, I can’t be sure if the first compact car by Infiniti is comfortable to be in or exciting to drive. My friend from Infiniti asked me to change to Sport mode after just a few hundred meters on Economy mode, leaving me none the wiser on the understanding of either.

Considering the traffic conditions of the surrounding areas on Saturday, I’m not sure the guests got the best in-car environment to appreciate the standard Bose audio system. However, the built-in navigation system should have come in handy.

Designed by Infiniti Design London, the Q30 is prepared to amaze people with its bold and dynamic lines. The smallest model shares with its siblings a familiar grille and signature LED lighting.

The interior parts, such as the seats, steering wheel and switches, will perhaps remind people of a luxurious compact hatchback from a well-known brand.

The Q30 has in common with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class the architecture and a range of engines co-developed by the groups. The automotive world, you see, is an interwoven business.

I must add that the interior design of the Q30 is rather distinctive from its German relative. The Q30 is characterized by a sporty and cozy atmosphere. There are good quality materials all-round.

Complemented by good stitching, nappa leather is used extensively to cover the dash and door panels. Infiniti emphasizes that the leather used is of “clothing-quality softness.”

The covering of the inner side of the pillars and ceiling, meanwhile, is with a new material called Dinamica, which is a suede-like, recycled material developed in Italy by the high-fashion industry, the carmaker says.

Prices of the Q30 starts below HK$300,000, while the top-of-the-line 2.0t Sport AWD, as tested, is listed at HK$419,800.

The Infiniti Q30 is an all-new model setting its sights on the premium compact segment which will be crucial for the brand’s expansion plan.

Infiniti Hong Kong organized a Q30 drive event exclusively for invited guests recently.

On Saturday afternoon, I sneaked into Infiniti’s showroom on Queen’s Road East, in the hope of checking out how the program was going. I got lucky. Between the scheduled drives of registered guests, I was given the key of a Q30 in ink blue and off I went for a quick spin.

The car I had was the top-of-the-range 2.0t Sport AWD. The word Sport means a sports suspension lowered by 15 millimeters, a set of 19-inch wheels and performance brakes.

Auto italia, the official dealer of Ferrari in Hong Kong, organized a Ferrari 488 GTB and 488 Spider track experience on the Zhuhai International Circuit recently. It was first for

current and future Ferrari owners, and members of the invited media had fun pushing the new cars to the limits.

On the main straight of the circuit, the Ferrari duo reached more than 200km/h in sixth gear.

The performance of both was particularly impressive considering it was largely a wet circuit on the day. Yet it was nowhere near the true potential of the two Ferraris.

The 488 series employs a new 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine rated at 670hp. Significantly, the engine features technology called Variable Torque Management, which unleashes peak torque of 760Nm only in seventh gear at 3,000rpm.

The track experience started with a briefing session by Ferrari driving instructor Marco Didaio and local touring car ace Andy Yan.

Andy Yan and Marco Didaio are on hand to brief those attending.

The two talked the media members through the many concepts including the correct racing line, the proper driving position and vision, as well as the weight transfer during acceleration, braking and cornering.

We were then given demonstration hot laps. There were only two 488s in sight, a GTB and a Spider. In order to better manage the risk of one ending up on the grass or gravel, there were clearly marked brake points, and a temporary chicane just before the last corner of the circuit.

Were the chicane not in place, the two Ferraris could take the T14 in fourth gear and carry enough entry speed on to the main straight to allow the engine to perhaps fully flex its muscles in seventh gear.

Instead, the T14 was approached in second gear.I was happy to be reminded to choose the “wet” mode. As such, the

engine’s power delivery and the gear shift of the F1 dual-clutch transmission are smoother, while the exhaust notes are gentler.

However, I still found the 488s super quick and responsive. There is a more pronounced difference between various dynamic modes,

Didaio said. Compared with the 458, the new 488 has a more stable front axle “not only thanks to wider front rubbers, but also revised front suspension.”

Yan added that the new 488s offer excellent driving pleasure for drivers with different levels of car controlling skills. He said that when he was power-sliding the Spider in a tight corner in third gear.

I agree. I had a lot of fun pushing the GTB and Spider hard, even though I know I was nowhere close to exploiting the true limits of them.

The prices of the 488 GTB and Spider start from HK$4,242,788, with the latter to be launched in Hong Kong soon.

Power of threeVolkswagen has gained a strong foothold in the markets of Hong

Kong and Macau thanks to a range of popular models including the Golf, Tiguan and Touareg.

Recently the brand celebrated the opening of its new Volkswagen Center in Kowloon Bay.

The center is located at E-Max, a multi-usage shopping mall in the Kowloonbay International Trade and Exhibition Centre next to the main roads at the edge of the district.

It covers an area of more than 7,000 square feet with a capacity of up to 11 display cars, said David Goggins, managing director of Volkswagen Group in Hong Kong.

The innovative new center features modern decor, and has a digital retail strategy to match.

There are two concrete media walls with messages and videos on offer, in addition to outward-facing video screens.

The center’s customer service professionals, meanwhile, will be seen discussing with customers via iPads, Goggins added.

The first significant move of the brand following the opening of the new center is the presentation of a range of three seven-seater MPVs.

The Touran and Sharan are on display at the brand’s Kowloon Bay center.

As a segment, MPVs are significant in Hong Kong. The category accounts for one of every three private cars sold locally, according to the brand’s research.

Among the three MPVs, the new, second-generation Touran will likely be the biggest contributor to the brand’s sales chart.

Riding on the versatile MQB platform, which gives the automotive world models including the Golf and Audi A3, the new Touran comes equipped with a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 150ps.

The Touran 280TSI, to give the vehicle its full name, is further divided into three trim levels, with prices starting from around HK$260,000.

The next level up is the Sharan, divided into the 280TSI and 380TSI.

The former employs the same engine as the Touran, while the latter gets a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 220ps. It is a sporty choice of MPV, and it sports two automatic sliding doors.

Prices start from around HK$350,000 for the 280TSI, to HK$480,000 for the 380TSI.

Sitting comfortably at the top of the range is the all-new Multivan Kombi, with an estimated price of HK$700,000 up. It comes with a wave of comfort features, such as swivel captain seats, multifunction foldable tables and electronic controlled suspension.

It is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 204ps.

Volkswagen’s Hong Kong boss David Goggins says one in every three private cars sold locally is an MPV.

The Multivan Kombi is a newcomer in the premium MPV market. Above, the brand’s new center.

The new Subaru Forester made its public debut recently at Tuen Mun Town Plaza. The mid-generation refresh

of the capable crossover SUV has been on display at the Kowloon Bay showroom since.

Even if you are an owner of the existing, pre-facelift model, you will have a hard time telling the two apart. The new Forester features newly designed head and rear lamps, and a new set of wheels (in the same size of 18 inches) will also give you a clue.

The new LED head lamps feature auto levelling function, and get a new steering responsive headlight system which, interestingly, can be turned off at the touch of a switch.

The drivetrain remains the same. The top-of-the-line 2.0XT version is powered by a two-liter direct injection turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine with a maximum output of 241ps and peak torque of 350Nm.

Power is transferred to all four wheels via a proven continuously variable transmission.

There is a pair of paddle shifters, though, to satisfy those who insist on controlling a vehicle’s ‘gears.’

T h e X - M o d e a n d S I D r i v e f u n c t i o ns , controlled via switches set close to the gear se lec to r, shou ld be f am i l i a r t o e x i s t i ng Forester owners.

At the launch are Motor Image’s general manager Dick Chan, left, and Glenn Tan, executive director of Tan Chong International.

But there is improvement that is not easily seen by the untrained eye. The front and rear suspensions are subtly revised to give the car added on and off-road controllability.

In addition, there is reinforced sound insulation. Many of the glass panes, for example, are now thicker.

It’s difficult to decide if the new Forester is actually quieter than the pre-facelift model driven three years ago, but the first impression after a short drive is very good.

There is very few tire noise to start with, even though the original Bridgestone Dueler H/L all-weather tires are not known to prioritize refinement over function. Likewise, there is only that vague impression of wind and mechanical noises. I’ve had experience in many other SUVs which compare less favorably with this. The new Forester should be considered a candidate for the best-built SUV of its class from Japan.

The reliable symmetrical all-wheel drive system gives the vehicle fantastic traction over low-friction surfaces, while features like the X-Mode, a good ground clearance and metal underfloor protection make it one of the most capable choices for the money (HK$329,800).

After all the years of constant improvement, it has become a very practical and capable SUV for people who have a very active outdoor lifestyle.

The all-new Kia Sportage made its debut in Hong Kong recently at the brand’s headquarters and showroom in Yuen Long. The Korean compact SUV is an affordable vehicle with plenty of style. The new generation was praised for its progressive appearance, while keeping

an eye on the lineage of the SUV. Kia Motors Hong Kong president Mak Hing-tak said that the fourth-generation

Sportage comes with “advanced new technology features and higher quality,” in addition to “an evolutionary performance and revolutionary design.”

People will be wise to take the remarks of Mak with reference to the positioning of the vehicle. At HK$199,980 for the entry level, front-wheel-drive EX, and HK$278,000 for the four-wheel-drive EX Premium, the new Sportage is packed with a long list of standard equipment.

The EX comes with LED daytime running lights, auto folding mirrors, keyless entry system, a selection of three drive modes, leather steering wheel with

multicontrol functions, Bluetooth connectivity, an audio system with five-inch touchscreen and AUX and USB ports.

In the safety department, there is a range of driver-assist programs, along with a rear parking camera.

The EX Premium, shown here in red, gets additional features: LED rear lamps, panoramic sunroof, power tailgate, leather seats with ventilated and heated front seats, electronic parking brake with auto-hold function.

The new Sportage is generally a desirable and practical set of wheels.

Fayrus Tang, left, and Mak Hing-tak toast the new models.

The cabin gets credit for being spacious. “Increased exterior and interior dimensions come with raised headroom, expanded legroom and cargo space providing greater space and comfort for drivers and all passengers,” said Fayrus Tang, sales and business operation manager of Kia Motors Hong Kong.

The Sportage isn’t flawless, though. If I’m honest the dashboard design looks like it is heavily influenced by past generations.

For those who put safety first, take note the Sportage gets

the top five-star rating at the Euro NCAP standard crash test assessment, which means it is naturally regarded as one of the safest SUVs in the market.

The Sportage is available in Hong Kong in two versions: the EX with a 2.0-liter engine; and the EX Premium with a 2.4-liter engine. Both versions enjoy a generous manufacturer warranty of five years or 150,000km.

No wonder Kia has increasingly won its reputation as a reliable automotive brand.

Since its introduction last year, the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5, or Miata in some markets, has won critical acclaim

from car reviewers, professional bodies and consumers alike in its markets around the world.

The roadster is particularly praised for its excellent handling capability by car critics.

A result of a mostly lightweight construction, the new MX-5 tips the scale at 1,117 to 1,155 kilograms – close to the first generation that took the motoring world, or more precisely, the roadster world, by storm more than a quarter of a century ago. By contrast, the less adored third generation, produced between 2005 and 2014, was about two average Hong Kong adults heavier.

The new Alcantara Edition is not a facelift of the fourth generation. It sports cosmetic changes to the interiors and exteriors.

From the outside, the Alcantara Edition is distinguished by the use of matt silver finished windshield frame, style bars behind the seats, side mirrors and body accents on the fenders.

The 17-inch wheels and 205/45 R17 tires remain unchanged.More changes are found in the vehicle’s interiors. There is, of course, a significant use of Alcantara. The material is

Italian, according to the brand’s official distributor VangIek Motors. The upholstery is supplemented by a leather-cladded gear

selector and a leather hand-brake handle, while the color of the inside door panels matches the vehicle’s body color.

When a reviewer thinks that a car offers a lot of fun to drive, he or she is likely to be positive on the car’s other areas as well.

Perhaps this explains why the latest MX-5 is viewed by many leading car journalists in the world, including Daniel Pang from Sing Tao Daily, to be reasonably comfortable and spacious, despite the fact that it’s also one of the smallest two-seaters on the market.

Hong Kong-bound MX-5 comes with a two-liter four-cylinder engine, rated at 160ps, and is available in two transmission types, a six-speed manual and a torque-converter based six-speed automatic, with the former so far a more popular choice thanks to the addition of more sporty Bilstein suspension and the use of a limited-slip differential.

At HK$408,880, the automatic version is HK$20,000 more expensive than a manual version. The more comfort oriented suspension setup offers, of course, a more comfortable ride.

The fact that it comes with a Sport mode and a pair of paddle shifters means the driver still has almost fun control on the use of the engine’s torque and power.

French carmaker Peugeot stirred up the local market with its recent introduction of the 308 Allure and 308 SW – both of

which pledge to be desirable not only for their Gallic flavor but also being unique choices in the class.

Taking place recently at Hyatt Sha Tin hotel, the unveiling ceremony was attended by French consul general Eric Berti, Sime Darby Motor Group managing director Peter Goh, as well as executives of the brand’s local distributor Auto France Hong Kong.

If you think the 308 is a case of deja vu, think again. Auto France knows that the 308 Allure is vying for the same market as popular vehicle choices such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The company also realizes the importance of bringing something special to the market as the brand is a latecomer to the party.

That special gift is the promise of returning about 25 kilometers for a liter of fuel. The two 308s are both powered by the latest two-liter turbocharged diesel engine developed by Peugeot.

The company calls the new family of engines that fulfils the stringent Euro 6 emissions BlueHDi, in contrast to the HDi used by the Expert cargo van, which is increasingly seen in the territory.

Thanks to the fact that diesel is not subject to duty, it is quite a lot cheaper than gasoline. Currently diesel costs around HK$10.85 per liter, but it must be added that fuel companies are quite prepared to sell the fuel to customers at a discounted price.

The new diesel engine was launched by Peugeot in Europe about two years ago.

However, for various reasons diesel cars for private use often taken a longer time to get the green light from the authorities, even though the vehicle meets the applicable exhaust and noise emissions standard.

“It has taken us over a year to get the vehicles homologated,” said Calvin Lam of Auto France Hong Kong, recalling the procedures – including roadside tests – required by the authorities to ensure that the diesel engine meets relevant regulations.

The veteran car marketer is delighted with customer reactions to the 308 Allure and the 308 SW in Hong Kong.

He said the two models, at HK$289,800 and HK$309,800, respectively, are aggressively priced in Hong Kong, representing “the best prices anywhere in the world”.

Riding on 17-inch wheels, the two models both feature a panoramic glass roof and leather seats.

The SW is a station wagon with an extra 33.2 centimeters added to the overall length of the Allure hatchback, and its excellent luggage carrying capacity of 1,606 liters makes it a practical set of wheel for people who regularly carry heavy personal items to get around the city, especially on journeys that involve going up slopes.

At the launch of the new Peugeots are French consul general Eric Berti and Peter Goh from Sime Darby.

Tesla, the leading electric car brand in Hong Kong, has just turned a new chapter in the territory. Earlier, the brand opened a

dedicated showroom in the heart of Wan Chai, in the neighborhood of some of the most prestigious automotive brands.

At the opening ceremony were Tesla executives, including Robin Ren, global vice president and head of the Asia-Pacific region, and Isabel Fan, regional director of Tesla Hong Kong and Macau.

Ren has frequently been seen delivering product presentation speeches on a grand stage in a style befitting executives of great tech companies, but he had to make do with a smaller scale speech, albeit in usually high spirits, this time in Hong Kong.

The new flagship store on Queen’s Road East keeps many of the features found in a modern car showroom, plus a little more.

Don’t forget, Tesla is as much about tech and energy as automobile.

The adequately lit store features wall-mounted monitors for a wide spectrum of commercial and other footages, and customers can configure their new Tesla EVs at a “design studio,” which will be familiar to those who have visited one of the luxurious car brands’ showrooms just across the street.

At the launch are Isabel Fan and Robin Ren.

There are also big touch-screen mon i t o r s whe re people can check out everything they have to know about the car.

I m p o r t a n t l y , there is an in-store supercharger.

A customer service professional will surely be quick to tell any EV doubter the fact that a supercharger can get half of the battery of a Model S P90D replenished in about the time a person takes to finish a coffee.

The P90D, by the way, is the most powerful car in the current Tesla range.

In the model’s “ludicrous” version, Tesla quotes a three-second time for it to sprint to 100 km/h.

As the boss of Tesla in Hong Kong, Fan knows the importance of a good charging infrastructure outside the brand’s new showroom, taking pride in the fact that Hong Kong boasts the world’s highest density of not only Tesla vehicles, but also charging stations. Following its cooperation with Swire Properties this year, Tesla has added a supercharging station in Taikoo Place, a prime commercial district in Island East, with four superchargers.

Recent additions to the infrastructure included one new supercharging station, with, again, four superchargers in Kowloon Bay’s E-Max Mall and expansion of existing charging facilities located in the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal.

Hong Kong is now home to 54 Tesla superchargers across an infrastructure of 12 stations, in addition to over 120 destination chargers. Fan adds that the majority of Tesla users in Hong Kong will find charging facilities within drives of under 20 minutes.
