COVID-19 Update

We?re almost there! Almost holidays!

It has been an incredible start to the year. Despite

COVID-19 levels reaching new heights, we have

managed to stay on campus, learning, and safe!

Student performance, activities and sporting events

have even been possible!

I truly want to thank all of the teachers for their

incredible work, both in keeping up the health

protocols and in helping our students to learn and

find their way back towards normality.

The new protocols seem to be working. While we

have had a number of cases in the school (4 Staff; 20

Students; 10 Parents) we have still seen zero spread

within the school, and we have only felt the need to

close one class briefly so far. Protocols, cohorts,

masks and vaccinations are all working together, and

if we can remain safe outside of school, we have

every reason to feel confident in mitigating the risks.

Providing we continue to be allowed control over

things, and keep doing what we are doing, our year

is looking good.

As you are likely aware, the government has issued

new restrictions that are coming into effect. You can

find them here.

The Board of Trustees will be meeting next week to

discuss them all and we will be communicating

decisions as soon as they are made.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone happy, restful,

healthy and safe holidays. We all deserve a well

earned rest. Please take care of yourselves and do

everything you can to avoid situations where the

spread of the virus may be possible.

Thank you and Happy Holidays,

Dr. Sims

Grade 0 has really got that school spirit! We got to wear hoodies, jammies, and even matching Elsa braids to school this week. Needles to say, we had a blast!

The Early Year started their annual project ?12 Days of Holiday Cheer ''where we invite parents to teach us a litt le bit about their holidays and traditions.

This is an excellent way to learn about the international approaches to holiday time in our multicultural learning community. This week we started the project by decorating a Christmas tree and having Ryan's mom Ms. Karina teach us how to make reindeer puppets. We can?t wait for more:)

St Nicolas Day

This week grade 2B was very lucky to have one parent come and tell us about the St Nicolas tradition that they celebrate in Germany.

It?s a tradition that is celebrated all over the world by many cultures.

In Germany Nicolas was a very wealthy man. He wanted to help the neighbors daughter that could not get married because her family did not have enough money. I?m the middle of the night he would place a bag with coins in her shoe.

Years after years, the tradition has continued . On the 6th of December children get presents from St Nicolas. Day before they clean their shoes the best they can. They place them by the front door. If the shoes were clean then St Nicholas leaves a litt le gift inside.

The whole elementary school participated in this beautiful tradition!! We have cleaned shoes!! And we all got lovely treats!!

Arcimboldo in grade 0! ;-)

The students in Polish class have been learning about fruits and vegetables. That is why they have been making artwork with vegetables. We also kept the scent of some fruits in a jar to be able to smell a bit of Summer on cold days... Now we are ready for Winter! ;-)

On Monday, Nov. 29, the fifth grade students became the teachers and taught the audience all about the IB Learner Profile Trait, Communicator. Through a combination of acting, sign language and readers theatre, the fifth grade instructed everyone present about all the different facets of communication. They also demonstrated how they begin their day with sign language and at the end of the assembly, they taught the other elementary students how to "say" different animals in sign language. Overall, it was an entertaining and educational assembly. The fifth graders enjoyed performing and the audience enjoyed watching and participating.

El e me n t a r y Up d a t e sIntercultural Polish Studies' students participated in a project connected with Krakow's unique tradition - Nativity Scene Contest - Konkurs Szopek Krakowskich - which is inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - and has been cultivated for 79 years here in Krakow.

Every year people of all ages and all walks of life take part in the annual competition that takes place in Krakow. The tradition to make the Nativity Scenes is closely connected to the catholic traditions cultivated in this region.

Traditionally, the contestants make shiny constructions made of paper and tin foil presenting the most characteristic features of Krakow's architecture as well as the folk tradition of this city. Here you can find more background information on the UNESCO official website.

G 3, 4 and 6 students were not only exploring this unique tradition but also learnt about their own native country and created their very own original interpretation of Szopka which was a composition of szopka-style models of the most famous buildings from around the world to reflect the multicultural and open-minded character of our ISK community.

ISK Students of G3, 4 and 6 participated in a live event on Market Square on Dec 2. They presented their work in a festive parade around the Market Square and got a chance to say a few words about their project on a stage to the public gathered for the contest. Eventually, our creations were installed as parts of the annual Szopki Exhibition exhibit which will be open to the public on Dec 6, 2021 in the Krzysztofory Museum at Rynek, where you can see it along with other extraordinary artworks until 27 Feb. 2022.

The Student Council conducted an All-School Spirit Week last week! Almost every class qualified for

donuts and hot chocolate day! (To be set in January!) Students dressed in ISK clothing, pajamas, hoodies,

and teamed up as ?twins?. There was much unity and lots of smiles all around! Thanks, Spirit Committee!

In grade 9, recently students spent a good half-hour counting bubbles. Lucky teams

actually had some bubbles to count, but the team hiding their plant under the table

ended up with none at all. There is a good explanation for the otherwise strange

pastime: Those were bubbles of oxygen, released by a water plant as a sign of

photosynthesis taking place, in response to different treatments. Some plants got

different colors of light, others - varying light intensities. What do you think, dear

reader, which color of light is most useful to plants and results in the highest rates

of photosynthesis? You can choose between blue, red, green. Ask any of the

9th-grade students if you were right.

On the 13th of November our school hosted a Soccer

Tournament for Middle School and High School with the

participation of Wroclaw International School, the British School

of Cracow, and the Embassy School of Cracow. The tournament

was an intense day of soccer and hours of fun between the

players and fans. 8 teams played a total of 12 games from 8:30

until 16:00. In the end, our Middle Schools Hussars came in 1st

and 2nd place and our High School team in 3rd place. Finally,

we would like to thank the people who helped this event

succeed.

Volleyball tournament

During Covid, ISK has been prevented from running any

in-school tournaments that help the student body interact

and mingle with each other. Recently, the Student Council

Sports Committee came up with the idea of a Volleyball

tournament that includes students from every grade

throughout Middle School and High School. In this

tournament, students were asked to come up with a team of

valuable players and then compete against each other until

there was one team standing. In total, there were four

teams; three student teams and one teacher team.

Unfortunately, the teacher team lost, not being able to

suffice the immense amount of skill the students hold. In

first place was the team Better Than You, who won a great

victory against the other teams. Volleyball has become a

great sport amongst the student community of ISK, and we

are hoping you can join the school and participate in the

upcoming volleyball game on Saturday the 11th of

December.

The 9th Graders started working on Similarity in Math last week. Their first task was to 'become' a pantograph and to enlarge given figures. Later, they explored how dilation works in GeoGebra - an interactive geometry and algebra application.

Dearest friends,

I want you to know that meeting you all was a

blessing, a great learning curve for me, and a lot of

fun.

You can meet me skiing or walking on the mountain

trails. I believe that our paths will cross again

someday.

You are all amazing and I do hope we will stay in

touch and remain friends.

Hello ISK,

My name is Joanna Debosz and in January I will start my role as

Administrative Assistant & Communication Officer in ISK. I will

be responsible for managing our social media activity and

supporting all of you with your administrative queries.

I was born and raised nearby in Wieliczka - a city famous for its

wonderful Salt Mine. Before joining ISK, I worked in various

administrative roles in tourism and retail.

Personally, I am a huge fan of travelling. I have already visited

over 35 countries and certainly this is not a final number of

places I would like to see. I also love the mountains: skiing in

the winter and hiking in the summer. Last but not least of my

hobbies is reading books, which I picked up helping my parents

run their book store.

The holidays are upon us! It?s my favorite time of the year and I love to cuddle up with a good book in the evenings. Who could resist the classic Charles Dickens ?A Christmas Carol?? We have several versions so if English is not your strongest language, don?t worry! Another classic is the beautiful short story, ?The Gift of the Magi? (hint- it has nothing to do with the Three Wise Men!).

We would like to thank the entire ISK community for helping accomplish another

successful year helping local families through the Szlachetna Paczka initiative. This year

we were able to get all the items asked for by three families in order to make their

holiday season a whole lot better. It is our fourteenth year taking part in the Szlachetna

Paczka and the generosity and caring shown by our community year after year never

ceases to amaze us. Thank you to all the parents, students, teachers, and staff who

helped make this happen this year!
