Prof. Sandeep Verma’s Convocation Address, insisting that ‘graduates should take roads less travelled’, would certainly help them to hone adaptability and individuality, when they encounter problems and obstacles in their life. Various prestigious awards were presented to students in recognition of their peerless academic and curricular performances. SASTRA ensured that the knowledge acquired by the students was evaluated by conducting ‘Hybrid Assessments’ during the Covid-19 pandemic period. e management had also provided Rs.500 as ‘examination incentive’ to students to help them get the required broadband bandwidth to attend the tests. SASTRA dedicated to the nation the Integrated Academic Block, and student’s hostel block to the academic milieu, built at a cost of 160 Crores. e Integrated Academic Block houses state of the art labs and lecture halls, and Knowledge Resource Centre houses the campus library. SASTRA Ramanujan Award 2021 has been awarded to Dr. Will Sawin of Columbia University for his comprehensive and influential contributions in both number theory and algebraic geometry. 12 faculty members of SASTRA University have made to the top 2% in their fields of research according to the Stanford University study report in research, released by Elsevier. SASTRA was granted its 7th patent in significant healthcare applications to improve the performance of supercapacitor. Recognition of SASTRA TBI as a Nidhi Prayas Centre and the establishment of Tata-Palkhivala Chair on ADR & AI by the SASTRA Law School are new feathers added to the cap. e academic and research activities did not stagnate in the unprecedented Covid-19 situation, but rather kept the faculty ambiance vibrant and engaged in various conferences and knowledge leadership forum lectures. Prof. Sandeep Verma, Secretary, Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB), Govt. of India delivered the 35 th Convocation Address and stressed on the sustainable development goals, and the need for human research capital to work on issues related to environment, mental health, energy, social development, etc. “With the growing relevance of quantitative social sciences and a robust national mission on cyber- physical systems, there is a converging opportunity for India to offer solutions to not only national but also global problems” said Prof.Verma. The 35th Convocation of SASTRA Deemed University was held on October 16, 2021. Chancellor Prof.R.Sethuraman presided over the convocation. Prof. Sandeep Verma, Secretary, Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB), Govt. of India delivered the 35th Convocation Address and stressed on the sustainable development goals, and the need for human research capital to work on issues related to environment, mental health, energy, social development, etc.

Over 4,500 students including 54 Ph.D. graduands were conferred various degrees in UG, PG & Ph.D. across multiple disciplines of Engineering, Sciences, Management, Law, Humanities & Education. The Lord Selvamuthukumaran Award for the Best Outgoing B.Tech. Engineering Student was presented to ECE graduate Ms.Aishwarya Lakshmi, who also bagged the Kamakoti Award for Overall Excellence and the Silver Jubilee Batch Best Outgoing Girls Student Award.

Ms.C.B.Thejaswini and Ms.B.Deepasree were awarded the Justice Patanjali Sastry Award and Nani Palkhivala Award (cash prize of Rs.1 Lakh each) for being the best outgoing B.A.,LLB (Hons.) & B.Com., LLB (Hons) graduates.

The Founder-Chancellor’s Best Doctoral Thesis Award was presented to Ms.Ramya Dhandapani in Engineering and Mr.P.Muthukumar for Sciences. Besides these, over eight special awards were presented during this convocation.

The 2021 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize is awarded to Dr. Will Sawin of Columbia University for his many path-breaking contributions at the interface of number theory and algebraic geometry. The prize recognizes his recent joint publications with Mark Shusterman, Emmanuel Kowalski and Philippe Michel (Annals of Mathematics (2017)), and also for his fundamental

joint work with Tim Browning on a geometric version of the Hardy-Littlewood-Ramanujan circle method (Annals of Mathematics (2020). He was also successful in resolving the mixing conjecture of Philippe Michel and Akshay Venkatesh in the function field setting, and in particular his paper in Inventiones Mathematicae (2020), where he settled the conjecture in positive characteristic.

RAMANUJAN COLLOQUIUM

SASTRA Deemed to be University organised Ramanujan Colloquium (Virtual Mode) at Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre on December 21 and 22, 2021. Prof. Krishnaswami Alladi, Dept. of Mathematics, University of Florida, USA chaired the session. Eminent mathematicians like Prof. Phillippe Michel, EFPL, Switzerland, Dr. Kaisa Matomaki, University of Turku, Finland, Prof. Ken Ono, University of Virginia, USA and Dr. Will Sawin, Columbia University, USA spoke on topics like Congruences in Modern Analytic Number Theory, Siegel Zeros, Twin Primes, Goldbach’s Conjectre and the Primes in Short Intervals, Arithmetic and Geometric Means over Finite Fields, and Number Theory with Polynomials over Finite Fields.

INTEGRATED ACADEMIC BLOCK

Shri. T.V.Narendran, CEO & Managing Director, TATA Steel Limited in a virtual programme dedicated to the Nation ‘The Integrated Academic Block’ ‘Jayendra Vihar’ and ‘Vinaya’ Students’ Home (Hostel) on October 15, 2021.

The Integrated Academic Block is a building over 4L sq.ft. constructed at a cost of Rs.85 Crores housing state of the art labs, lecture halls, auditoria, knowledge resource centre, meeting halls, discussion rooms, discussion pathways, ideation tents, etc.

The Hostel block ‘Vinaya’ is a building over 4L sq.ft. constructed at a cost of Rs.80 Crores, with 1000 single rooms and 550 4 in1 rooms, sprawling dining and well equipped kitchen area, recreation centre, RO plant, zero discharge effluent treatment plant, well designed walkways, etc. Both are SASTRA’s new additions to meet the emerging requirements of higher education and student expectations.

SASTRA TBI – A NIDHI PRAYAS CENTRE

The Technology Business Incubator facility at SASTRA  has been approved by NIDHI-PRAYAS (2016-17), the Department of Science and Technology to act as a PRAYAS Centre (PC) for nurturing the ideas and innovations (knowledge-based and technology-driven) of young and aspiring innovators into successful start-ups. Under the PRAYAS programme, SASTRA would be supported for five years with a Rs.1 Crore grant as capital expenditure for creating a dedicated fab-lab and working space of about 3,000 square feet, and Rs.1 Crore each year for grants to innovators (Rs.10 Lakh each for 10 innovators) and Rs.20 Lakh each year for annual operations, fab-lab management and other expenses. SASTRA has invited aspiring innovators especially from Thanjavur region, to utilise the facilities at SASTRA TBI, which includes rapid prototyping labs in the areas of 3D Printing, Internet of Things, Virtual Reality and Idea Drones. The Wi-Fi-enabled facility houses ready to operate work stations, conference rooms, library and other facilities.

STEM Lab Kits

To empower the next generation towards STEM education, TBI Incubatee Propeller Technologies delivered STEM Lab Kits @Rs.5L per kit to 10 schools in Tamil Nadu. This model is all set to be scaled for STEM Edu in many schools in India through an immersive STEM Lab & online learning platform.

PATENTS

Dr.S. Devaraj, Dr.P. Vishnu Vardhan, Dr.S. Manikandan and Dr.K. S. Rajan, SASTRA, filed a patent on “Nanofluid as an Additive in the Electrolyte: A Facile and Efficient Strategy to Improve the Performance of Supercapacitor”. It is the 7th patent of SASTRA in significant healthcare applications. DST provided the Startup Research grant for the project.

2. Dr. R. Jayasree, Department of Education, School of Arts, Sciences, Humanities and Education, SASTRA, received ‘Perumaimigu Peraasiriyar Award’ from Porunai Ilakkiyak Kalam in association with Tamil Nilam Arakkattalai and Naangal Arakkattalai on October 31, 2021.

3. Dr.S.Arunkumar, Assistant Professor-III, School of Management participated as a key note speaker in the ‘International Congress on Business and Marketing (ICBM’21)’ by Dogus University,Turkey, in the 4th Congress with IBEMS Congress Co-chairship with the aim to discuss digital transformation for business and marketing. He delivered the lecture on the topic “Digital Disruptive Innovation”. Students’ Achievements

1. Sri. Munibhagyala Kalyan of  IV B.Tech EEE, SASTRA, won the first prize at national level in the COVID-19  awareness  “Short Film Contest “ winning a cash award of Rs 21,000/- and a merit certificate in the Unnat Bharath Abhiyaan (UBA) program. He had earlier won first prize with a cash award of Rs.10,000 at regional level (among 180 colleges).

2. Ms. I. Ranjani Hilda Mary, M.Tech. (Wireless & Smart Communication) was awarded third prize for the project titled “Microwave Food Processing and Inactivating Pathogenic Micro-Organisms” in IEEE Madras Section Post Graduate Student and Doctoral Scholar Project Funding 2021 – PGDSPF held on November 15, 2021.

Elsevier-Stanford recently released its 2020 report wherein a dozen faculty from SASTRA University have made it to the top 2% of authors worldwide for their quality of research publications in reputed International Journals. They have been ranked in their areas of research based on citations and h-index.

1. Dare To Dream 2.0 Innovation Award Dr James Baskaradas of SASTRA Deemed University was felicitated by Honorable Minister of Defence Shri. Rajnath Singh for bagging the second place in D2D 2.0 Challenge addressing “Detection and Classification of LPI Radar Signals for Electronic Support Systems”. This technology, with proper adaptation, will be beneficial for our tri forces for surveillance support.

Srishivani Arulraj, II Year  B.Tech (Aerospace Engineering) won Third place in the Design Competition organised by Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space, Sriharikota during the World Space Week 2021, from October 05 -10, 2021.

c. Chi. M. Venkattesh Kumar, final year student of B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, won the Best Paper Award for “Design and Construction of a Robotic Arm for Machining Solid Propellants” in “Aerospace and Defence Related Mechanism” Conference at ARDE-DRDO, December 2-4, 2021.

d. Team comprising Sow. S Swetha Lakshmi, Sow. M Varsha, Chi. GM Sabari Krishnaa, and Dr. VM Sreehari won the first prize in World Space Week Design Competition from October 4-10, 2021, organised by ISRO-Sathish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.

e. Chi. Jegadeeshwaran, Chi. S. Karthikeyan and Sow.A. Kiruthika,  of B.Tech Aerospace Engineering were awarded  the  first prize  (Rs.5000/- Cash Award) for the Project titled “Aerodynamic Characteristics of Nrel S809 Airfoil with Ridges”  in the project competition  conducted by  Aeronautical Society of India, Chennai Branch. The project was done under the guidance of Dr. S. Nadaraja Pillai, Professor, SoME.

3. S. Harshinivhalli, fourth year B.Sc. B.Ed. (Mathematics) student published a short story in ‘The Writer Orders - Anthology ‘Delusion’’ published by The Youth of India.

4. Shalini Maria Francis, IV year B.A. B.Ed. (English) won first prize under the category of best story for her maiden short film “Amaranthine” in the National Level Short Film which was conducted by Indian Film House at Bangalore on November 5, 2021.

5. P.V. Akila, III Year B.Sc.B.Ed. (Physics) gave a special talk on ‘Emotional Intelligence’ through virtual mode, on October 9, 2021. The programme was conducted by GENEXT.

PLACEMENTS 2021-22

SASTRA has crossed a historic milestone of over 2000 job offers to its students. Amazon, PayPal, CISCO, Walmart, Oracle, Accenture, IBM, TCS, WIPRO, Cognizant, Tiger Analytics, MuSigma, Zoho, TVSM, etc. have offered high paying jobs. So far, over 650 students have got job offers with average pay of 10L+ p.a. and the remaining over 700 with average pay of 4L+.

MoU with Cantier Systems

A Centre of Excellence (CoE) has been established in School of Computing, SASTRA Deemed University as a part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by SASTRA, with Cantier Systems Pvt. Ltd. Singapore. The MoU was signed by Dr.R.Chandramouli, Registrar, SASTRA and Mr. Ravishankar Ramakrishnan, Director & CMIO, Cantier Systems on December 10, 2021. The CoE will provide Industry 4.0 solutions for smart manufacturing using machine vision, IoT, and AR/VR. SASTRA and Cantier Systems will work together in establishing an Experience Center for Smart & Digital Manufacturing.

Sekkizhar Adi-Podi Dr. T.N. Ramachandran Memorial Endowment

Sekkizhar Adi-Podi “Dr. T.N. Ramachandran Memorial Endowment” has been created at the Department of English, School of Arts, Sciences, Humanities and Education in remembrance of Dr. T.N. Ramachandran, an unsurpassed scholar in Tamil and English. He was an acknowledged cognoscente on Tamil Saivism and Saiva Siddhanta, and a prolific writer on several facets of Tamil hagiographical literature, and a versatile translator of Tamil Saivite Scriptures.

Earlier in 2021, SASTRA had acquired his personal library, a rare collection of over 35,000 books. The family of late Dr. TNR has contributed a sum of Rs 5,00,000/- towards the creation of the endowment.

KNOWLEDGE LEADERSHIP FORUM (KLF) LECTURES

SCHOOL OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

School of Mechanical Engineering organised a KLF Lecture on October 15, 2021. Dr. Prabhakar Kandasamy, Principal Surveyor - South East Asia, Pacific and India, DNV, Singapore explained that offshore research has its roots in the Ultra-Deepwater and Unconventional Natural Gas and Other Petroleum Resources.

A talk was hosted on December 28, 2021 at the Department of Bioinformatics, SASTRA, by COMBIGS. Dr.Manish Kumar, Associate Professor & Head, University of Delhi (South Campus), New Delhi, shared with the audience about antibiotic resistance and the long ordeal efforts of his team in developing an indigenously developed database ‘CBMAR – Comprehensive, Beta-lactamase Molecular Annotation Resource’.

SCHOOL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

A KLF lecture was conducted at the School of Civil Engineering on October 19, 2021. The guest speaker Dr.Venkataramana Sridhar, Diplomate, American Academy of Water Resources Engineers, Associate Professor, Department of Biological Systems Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, USA spoke on “Effective Water Management in the Transboundary River Basins Using Systems Dynamics Framework Around the World”.

A second online KLF lecture was conducted on October 22, 2021. Senior Scientist, CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai Dr.S.R. Balasubramanian, spoke on “An Overview on Seismic Behaviour of Structural Masonry Buildings”. The lecture was focused mainly on the seismic behaviour of Unreinforced Brick Masonry Buildings (URBM) and their different modes of failure.

SCHOOL OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING

A KLF Lecture on “EEG Based Brain Computer Interface: Current Status, Challenges and Possible Solution” was delivered by Dr. Rahul Bhardwaj, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Qneuro, Inc., Chennai on October 29, 2021.

The second KLF Lecture on “Career Guidance” was delivered by Shri. G.Subramaniyan IRS, Deputy Director, Enforcement Directorate, Kozhikode on November 13, 2021. This lecture was attended by Research Scholars, Faculty members and Students of SEEE.

WORKSHOPS

SCHOOL OF COMPUTING

1. School of Computing conducted “IBM-Open Power/Power Hybrid Workshop” from December 6-8, 2021. Prof DK Panda, Ohio State University, Dr. Sivakumar Shanmugam from Werner Enterprises, USA, Dr. Sameer Shinde from University of Oregon, and Dr. Arghya K Das from University of Wisconsin gave talks on various topics. Dr. Shankar Sriram, SASTRA, illustrated “AI/ML infra@SASTRA”.

2. NetSim training was arranged for the students of SASTRA from September 27 to October 1, 2021. Mr. Vishal Bhat, Application Engineer from Tetcos gave a hands-on content in TCP-IP Simulation, RIP, OSPF Analysis, DHCP Simulation, IEEE 802.3 and IEEE 802.11 in netsim.

Workshop on Traditional Rice Seed Banks at SASTRA

A State Level Farmers’ Meet was organized as ‘Workshop for Strengthening Community Seed Banks of Heritage Rice Varieties’ on December 23, 2021 by Department of Science and Technology (DST), SASTRA Deemed University, and CREATE- Save Our Rice Campaign, Tamil Nadu.

Duraisingam, Chairman CREATE, encouraged the heritage rice farmers to strengthen the community seed banks in Tamil Nadu. He highlighted that these efforts of SASTRA would greatly aid in the restoration of indigenous rice varieties of Tamil Nadu.

1. Computer Society of India-Student Chapter organized “Web Development” on November 13, 2021. Ms. Vaddi Sai Sri Charishma, Software Development Engineer, Samsung India Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, explained the advanced concepts of web and web development, web applications, web services, and how people develop web-based software, restful web services, SOAP, service-oriented architecture, and URL rewriting.

2. A second webinar of Computer Society of India-Student Chapter was organized on December 29, 2021. Sri. P. Purna Chandra, Full Stack Web Developer, Tata Consultancy Services, Chennai spoke on “Deep Learning and its applications”, and stated various advantages of Deep Learning and its applications. He listed the various advanced applications of Neural Networks such as Reinforcement Learning and GANs.

a. November 12, 2021 - Shri Jayachandrou Jayaraman, Senior Consultant, CTS, Hyderabad and one of the distinguished alumni of SoM, SASTRA addressed the MBA students on “HR Operations During Pandemic”. He explained the essence of practicing various round the clock HR operations, wellness programmes, and the challenges faced by HR during pandemic.

b. November 17, 2021 - Dr.Kiran Nair, Director, Abu Dhabi School of Management, UAE addressed the MBA students on “The Relevance of Masstige Marketing Strategy”. He highlighted recent concepts of marketing masstige, the process of creating customer value with various real brand examples and recapitulating the premium price strategies.

3. Blood Donation Special Lecture

To emphasize the importance of blood and organ donation, a special lecture on the topic “Donate Blood, Save Lives” by Dr.R V S Velmurugan, District Blood Transfusion Officer, Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital Blood Bank, Thanjavur was organized on December 18, 2021. In continuation to the Blood Donation awareness lecture, a Blood Donation Camp was organized on December 23, 2021 at Vaidhyanatha Aarogyashala. Thanjavur Medical College Hospital Blood Bank collected blood from 105 students and staff volunteers. The University has been rated at the top at the state level for the past several years.

IIChE Students’ Chapter

The Third IIChE Chapter Talk of the Month was held on December 4, 2021, by Dr. Sreepriya Vedantam, Principal Scientist & Faculty (AcSIR), Incharge-Reaction Engineering Lab, Process Engineering & Technology Transfer Division CSIR - Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad. PLASMA Compendium and Red Ribbon Club (RRC)

1. On October 6, 2021 the Plasma Compendium and Red Ribbon Club activities for the academic year 2021-2022 was inaugurated by Dr. Sidharth Parivallal, M.S., Chief Medical Officer-Puducherry Health Services (PHS) DHFWS, Puducherry. He delivered a lecture on “COVID19 Pandemic and the Indian Response” and highlighted the Indian academic response to the COVID pandemic, by contributing to knowledge building, rising quickly to a manufacturing hub to meet the demand of PPEs nationally and to export them to the needy countries.

2. World AIDS Day Special Lecture

To commemorate World AIDS Day and to raise awareness on the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection, a special lecture was organized on December 1, 2021. Dr. P. Manorama M.D, DCH, DM [Gastro], Founder of CHES (Community Health Education Society), Chennai, delivered her talk on the topic “HIV and AIDS over 40 Years”.

SASTRA Deemed University, was the proud organizer of the 13th CNSD from December 17 – 22, 2021, being the first private institute organizing CNSD in India. The inaugural address was delivered by Prof. M. Lakshmanan, Professor of Eminence and DST-SERB National Science Chair, Department of Nonlinear Dynamics, Bharathidasan University. Prof. Soumitra Banerjee from IISER, Kolkata, headed the inaugural session. 26 researchers around the globe presented their recent works as invited talks. 56 oral presentations, along with 23 poster presentations, were presented.

Faculty Development Programme

SASTRA in association with Intel Technologies, Bengaluru conducted a 3-day National Level Online Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Remote Access to Intel FPGAs & SoCs for Embedded System Design” from November 11 - 13, 2021. Mr.Padmanaban, Program Specialist – India FPGA University Outreach Intel Programmable Solutions Group enlightened the participants through both lecture and hands-on sessions on developing embedded applications using Intel FPGA boards using Quartus Prime design software.

17th Nani Palkhivala Memorial National Tax Online Moot Court Competition 2021

SASTRA Deemed to be University organised virtually the 17th Nani Palkhivala Tax Moot Competition, 2021 from November 19-21, 2021. Symbiosis Law School Pune University School of Law and Legal Studies won the Competition and the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi were the Runners Up. The final round of the moot was adjudged by a Three Judges-Bench, and the winners were awarded certificates and cash prize worth Rs.50,000/ and the Runners with Rs.25,000/. The Moot Problem was related to disputes in Income Tax Exemption Available to Trust, and disallowance of exemptions when the expenditure is against objectives of the Trust.

Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon Asian Mooting Competition (India Round)

Kum. Pranaya Dayalu, Chi. Prajeeth Prem and Chi. L.K. Swaraj of Final Year B.B.A., LL, B. (Hons.) qualified to the International Rounds of the 7th Prof N.R. Madhava Menon Mooting Competition 2021-22 and won a cash prize of Rs.15,000. A total of 44 teams participated which consisted of around 10 National Law Universities, and the top 7 Indian teams were selected to the International Rounds. SASTRA Deemed University is the only University which qualified from Tamil Nadu. The Moot problem for National Rounds dealt with Constitutional law aspects of freedom of speech in internet era and limitations posed by the IT Act. Kum.Pranaya Dayalu was awarded the Sourojeet Basu Ray Award for the Best Student Advocate.

Maria Philip Future Leadership Debate Competition, 2021

Chi. Vignesh Hariharan of V year, B.A, LL.B. (Hons.) and Kum. Jumanah Kader of IV-year, B.BA, LLB (Hons.) were declared the winners of the Tamil Nadu State Finals of Maria Philip Future Leadership Debate Competition, 2021. Chi.Vignesh Hariharan bagged the Best Speaker Award and was awarded with Rs.10,000

cash prize. The team has been awarded with the cash prize of Rs.40,000 and a trophy. They were the winners of the Qualifier Rounds - Madurai held on November 25, 2021.The team had competed with more than 50 teams from different colleges all over Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Tata-Palkhivala Chair on ADR & AI

On December 12, 2021, under the aegis of the Tata-Palkhivala Chair on ADR & AI established by the SASTRA Law School, a 6-Day Executive Training Programme on ‘Conflict Assessment & Management Training’ was organised. The Vice-Chancellor Prof. S.Vaidhyasubramaniam in his welcome address announced the creation of ‘Rural Mediation Cell’ at SASTRA Law School.

Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy, Judge, Madras High Court delivered the Valedictory Address of the hands-on and interactive programme. He highlighted the growing relevance of conflict avoidance and resolution through non-litigation transactions leading to transformations, and the need for professionals engaging in the art of negotiation, mediation and arbitration to address the present litigation burden.

Kum.Amridha Varshini bagged the Best Speaker Award. SASTRA Team competed with KMCT Law College, Kerala in the finals. The moot proposition was based on the enforceability of e-contract, validity of crypto currency and right to privacy in internet era. The team won a total cash price of Rs 20,000.

Winners of 1st NJ Yasaswy National Moot Court Competition

Kum.N.K. Kiruba of IV year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) Kum.M.Dixshitha of IV-year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) and Kum.P.Vennila of IV-year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) won the 1st NJ Yasaswy National Moot court competition conducted by ICFAI University, Jharkhand held from December 18-20, 2021. Kum.N.K Kiruba bagged the Best Speaker Award. A total of 31 teams participated in the competition which included National Law schools. The team competed with Bennett University, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh in the finals.

Awareness Lecture on “The Legal Rights of Women in India”

Smt. R. Gomathi, School of Law, SASTRA, Thanjavur delivered a lecture on “The Legal Rights of Women In

India” for the Legal Awareness Program organised by the Hon’ble National Legal Services Authority, New Delhi and the Hon’ble Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority, Chennai in coordination with the National Commission for Women (NCW) for  the celebration of  “Azadi ka Amrit Mahostav” and 25 years of inception of   National Legal Services Authority, New Delhi. The program was held on November 11, 2021.

1. Gandhi Jayanthi Day Celebrations

The Department of Education (DoE), SASTRA commemorated Gandhiji’s 152nd Birth Anniversary on October 2, 2021. Mr. Pothuchelvan, Retd. Incharge DEO, Thiruvarur Dist. spoke on the topic “Gandhian Thoughts”. Students delivered speeches on unknown facts and famous quotes of Gandhiji.

2. World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day was celebrated on October 11, 2021. The resource person Mrs.V. Karthika, Department of Training and Placement, SASTRA Deemed University, underlined the importance of

4. “A Vaccine Preventable Disease Surveillance Workshop” was conducted in SASTRA on October 28, 2021 presided over by Dr.Rameshkumar, Deputy Director Health Service and Dr.Sairabanu, Surveillance Medical Officer. The lucky draw prize winners of the

“Teachers’ Position in Mentoring Students” and encouraged student teachers to recognise their role as mentors in helping students shape their lives and careers.

3. Dr. Abdul Kalam’s 90th Birth Anniversary

Kalam Centre for Development Studies celebrated the 90th Birthday of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on October 15, 2021. Dr. V. Badrinath, Dean, Corporate Relations & Extension Activities, and Chair, Dr. Kalam Centre for Development Studies, School of Management addressed the gathering on the topic “Think Big”. He emphasized that students should educate atleast one poor child, and announced the Elocution Competition winners.

4. Dr. Usha Ajithkumar, Professor & HOD conducted a session on the topic “Communication - styles in Conflict-reactive Clues and Response to Difficult Conversations, Validation and Reciprocation” on November 28, 2021 for  ‘Conflict Assessment and Management Training’, organised by the School of Law, under the aegis of TATA-Palkhivala Chair on AI & ADR.

6. An online orientation programme for the 1st year NSS student volunteers was conducted on October 30, 2021. Dr.V.Badrinath, Dean, Corporate Relations and Extension Activities addressed the students and briefed them about NSS and its significance.

7. In compliance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s order and directives laid down by the Government of Tamil Nadu on bursting crackers and creating awareness among public on Air/Noise pollution, the NSS unit of SASTRA issued guidelines to celebrate a noiseless and

smoke free Deepavalli 2021, to the students through handbills on November 2, 2021.

The NSS student volunteers of SASTRA along with Dr.V.Badrinath, Dean, Corporate Relations and Extension Activities (CREA) and Dr.S.Sriram, NSS Program Officer, celebrated Deepavalli eve on November 3, 2021 with sweets with the inmates of Gangaru Karunai Illam for physically and mentally challenged at Srirangam, Trichy.

9. The NSS student volunteers of SASTRA along with Dr.R.Balasubramanian, NSS Program Officer were involved in crowd control duty at the Brihadeeswara Temple, Thanjavur during Sadhaya Vizha on November 13, 2021.

ONGC sponsored Sustainable Livelihood in Agriculture through Organic & Technology based farming was conducted for the 6th and final batch. Farmers from different parts of Tamil Nadu participated and totally 327 farmers got trained between November 29 and December 2, 2021.

Various sessions were handled in this residential

programme and the farmers were taken for a field visit to Kolinji Farm House, Pudukottai District. Mr. C.I Sebastian, GGM (Group General Manager) & Support Manager of ONGC, participated in the valedictory function and distributed the certificates and organic kits to the participants.

KS UPAHAAR

In the tough times of heavy rains and floods, Team KS Upahaar, extended their helping hands to children and old age people in Loubra Home Trichy. Following Covid protocols, students visited the home in person, spending quality time with the people. Fifteen blankets and ten school bags were donated to the inmates for Rs.5250/-. Dr V.M. Sreehari, Associate Professor, School of Mechanical Engineering, SASTRA Deemed University, donated Rs.5000.

CSE student won a cash prize of Rs.500 along with a shield and certificate from the Deputy Inspector General of Police and the Superintendent of Police, Thanjavur in the Short Film Making Competition conducted by the Thanjavur District Police, to mark the Police Commemoration Day 2021.

Brindha, Associate Dean, Centre for Advanced Research in Indian System of Medicine (CARISM), SASTRA, gave a special talk on medicinal plants of India ‘A World of Wonder’ on October 30, 2021. She briefed the audience on the importance of medicinal plants highlighted in Vedas and Upanishads. 

2. A seminar on “Waste Management” was organized on November 27, 2021. “Padmashri” M Subburaman, Trichy, Founder, SCOPE - a famous rural NGO,

inaugurated and spoke on “Rural Sanitation”. Dr. Veera Padman, Founder, Save Tirupur Movement, spoke on “Waste to Wealth” and Dr. V. Badrinath, Dean, Corporate Relations and Extension Activities, SASTRA spoke on “Think Globally, Act Locally & Do Domestically”.

3. A bird feeding station was inaugurated on December 15, 2021 near School of Mechanical Engineering with an idea to preserve and attract birds as well as to make SASTRA a nature friendly campus.

4. Swachh SASTRA Abhiyan, a clean-up drive in SASTRA campus was conducted on December 29, 2021by the Exnora students. 256 students collected and segregated the waste materials from their respective School premises and deposited them at specific waste collection centers on the campus.

Visit of US Consulate officials to SRC, Kumbakonam

Ms. Anne Seshadri, Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate, Chennai visited Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre, SASTRA, Kumbakonam and Government School, Tulasendrapuram, native of the US Vice President Kamala Harris. It is proposed to offer English Language training to 50 economically backward students of Government School of Mannargudi including Tulasendrapuram and the students of SRC, SASTRA, who are willing to improve their English Communication Skills. Total cost of the project sponsored by US Government is about 50000 USD.

NATIONAL CADET CORPS

Dr. G. Jegadeesan, Maths successfully completed the PRCN (Pre commission) course. The final POP (Passing Out Parade) was completed on October 23, 2021 and he is now Commissioned as ANO (Associate NCC Officer).

Maths won the first place in Cross Country Competition, and participated in Mountaineering Course at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi, Uttarkhand. He participated successfully in river crossing, jummaring, rappling, sports climbing, etc. for 15 days at the temperature of around 1o C.

R.Karthikeswar, a Shanmugha Polytechnic alumnus 2012-15 batch, Electrical and Electronics Engineering won the Bronze medal in Mr.World Body Building Championship in the 12th World Body Building and Physique Sports Championship - 2021 held at Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan from October 1- 7, 2021.

Vignesh J B S of Second Year MBA won the Gold Medal in Badminton Men Singles in the All India National Federation Cup 2021 held at Mapusa, Goa from November 25 - 27, 2021, organized by Youth Sports Development Association.

December 24, 2021 - The NSS, Plasma Compendium and the Red Ribbon Club of SRC in collaboration with the Government Hospital, Kumbakonam organized a blood donation camp at SRC.7. December 31, 2021 - 485 seed packets of Kitchen Garden Seeds were distributed to students and the staff.

8. On December 31, 2021 – at First Year NSS Volunteers Orientation Programme, “Everyday Ethics” by Dr. D. Narasimhan, Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, “Awareness on Cyber Security” by Dr. S. Meganathan, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, and “Understanding the Adolescent” by Dr.R.Ravi, Assistant Professor, Department of English were delivered.

Special training for IBPS aspirants

SASTRA SAGE offered special weekend training to the aspirants of IBPS, through Smart Training Research India Private Limited, Chennai on November 20, 21, 27 and 28 and December 4 & 5, 2021. About 130 people from Thanjavur District including a physically challenged participated in the training offered both in SASTRA Main Campus, Thanjavur and Srinivas Ramanujan Center, Kumbakonam. A special cash incentive of Rs.2000 was given by the Chancellor, SASTRA Deemed University, to about 50 participants each who attended the training on all the 6 days and

Rs.5000 was given to the physically challenged aspirant.

Kamalalayam Tank Renovation

The south side walls of the famous Kamalalyam Water Tank of Arulmigu Thyagaraja Swamy Temple, Thiruvarur collapsed  on October 25,  due to heavy and incessant rain in the delta region. SASTRA University immediately offered to carry out the re-construction of the parapet wall of Kamalalayam Tank, and began the restoration with a ritual pooja on December 23, 2021.

Annadhanam

SASTRA provided annadhanan to all devotees from 9 30 a.m. to 2.30 pm on November 20, 2021 at the famous Triprayar Sri Rama Temple in Thrissur District in Kerala on Thiruparayar Ekadasi, observed after the full moon day in the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam (November – December).
