THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE CREST
Meaning of the Crest: (The Blazon of the Arms)
The “Dexter Chief” (upper left) on the shield contains the golden book of knowledge, encircled by a gray “O” and represents the crest of The Ohio State University with the buckeye leaf superimposed at the base of the “O” and extending into the scarlet background. The “Sinister Chief” (upper right) contains six golden stars rising on a diagonal to the emblem of the University. The stars represent each of the six medical schools that provided a continuity of medical education in Ohio from 1834 to 1914 and the foundation upon which the College of Medicine stands. The deep forest green of the center base is recognized worldwide as the color of Medicine, just as the staff of Aesculapius with the single entwined serpent is acknowledged as the insignia of Medicine, taking its origin from Greek mythology. Impaled in this coat of arms is the heritage of The Ohio State University, signifying the maternal relationship between it and the College. The Greek motto translates: “Excellence in Medicine.”

Each year, The Ohio State University College of Medicine gives its graduating students the opportunity to nominate a member of the faculty who has significantly impacted their training. The Professor of the Year Award is the highest teaching award given within the College of Medicine and marks a career of excellence in medical education. This year’s Professor of the Year Award recipient is Dr. Melissa Quinn. Dr. Quinn is a valued member of The Ohio State University College of Medicine family. Beginning with her education as an Anatomy PhD student at Ohio State, she has had a long-standing focus on how to adapt teaching methods to individuals. She chose to stay here as an assistant professor following completion of her graduate studies, and since then has had a deeply positive impact on students. She served as an Associate Academic Program Director for Part 1 of the Lead.Serve.Inspire medical curriculum, led anatomy instruction for all medical students, and continues to serve as advisor to many doctoral, masters, and undergraduate students in anatomy. She has received numerous awards for her effective teaching, including the “Courage to Teach” award, the “Excellence in Education” award for Part 1 instruction, The OSU Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty award, among others, including a highly prestigious Candy Apple Award from the Class of 2022 during the neurological disorders block. She is active in other areas as well, including serving as an advisor for both the annual Anatomy Memorial Service and the Be the Match program and as the director of Outreach & Community Programming for the Department of Biomedical Education and Anatomy. She is also involved in many committees within the College—from admissions to academic advancement to the EdTech Incubator committee and the executive curriculum committee. In addition to her activities at the College, she also holds leadership roles in the American Association of Clinical Anatomists, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, and the Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education. Dr. Quinn’s aptitude for education and mentorship shone through in many of the nomination statements that were submitted from the class. To quote directly from short excerpts, Dr. Quinn “is always willing to go out of her way to support medical students and has had nothing but a positive impact on my time at OSUCOM.” “More than a handful of students have been impacted by her kindness when struggling through the transition from undergraduate to medical school.” “She is a role model for all aspiring medical educators, and I am forever grateful to her.” “She…is a bright shining light when medical school gets hard. She pushes her students to be better in all aspects of their lives, not just anatomy, and celebrates our achievements.” Her continuously positive impact and support for students over the course of our four years here is reflected repeatedly in these and many other nomination statements for the award. As an educator and mentor, she strives to ensure that everyone involved feels important and brings positivity, support, and encouragement to all her interactions with students. Personally, she is heavily involved in outreach at local high schools and the Center of Science and Industry. She enjoys spending her free time with family and friends, attending OSU games and following Pittsburgh sports teams (except the Pirates), and is a proud mother of three puppies. Thank you for all that you do for us, Dr. Quinn. On behalf of The Ohio State University College of Medicine Class of 2022, we are honored to present Dr. Melissa Quinn with the 2022 Professor of the Year Award. Reed Geisler & Moneer Moustafa Abouljoud From the Class of 2022 Student Council
PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR 2022
MELISSA M. QUINN, PhD
The Professor of the Year Award has been awarded each year since 1931 by the graduating class of The Ohio State University College of Medicine to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence and commitment to teaching and in mentoring and serving as a role model to the class. This once-in-a-lifetime award is the highest honor that a faculty member can earn from the graduating class. Portraits of all the past winners are displayed in the west lobby of Meiling Hall.
The Mary Beth Fontana, MD—Gary Wise, MD Endowment was established in July 2005 by Dr. Mary Beth Fontana to provide an annual award to the faculty member selected as the
Professor of the Year by the graduating medical student class.

THE ACADEMIC HOOD
The first mention of a distinct academic garment was found in the English ecclesiastical records of 1222 and associated with the Doctors of Sacred Theology at Oxford. In succeeding years reference is made to Doctors of “Physick” and Doctors of Civil Law wearing robes similar to those of the Doctors of Sacred Theology and Canon Law, but they had a distinctive headdress called the “pallium” to take the place of the “cappa clausa” of the latter. The first English statute concerning academic dress of the faculties of Law and Physick is dated 1226. Different “colors” for members of the various faculties are thought to have been introduced between 1458 and 1575, although it is recorded that scarlet robes for Doctors of Theology were first introduced at the University of Paris between 1334 and 1343. It was only natural that the colleges and universities of the English colonies in America should continue the academic garb customs of Cambridge and Oxford, along with the codes and regulations as to their use. In 1893, an American Intercollegiate Commission established the rules and regulations for the academic wearing of gowns, hoods, caps, and berets. Then, in 1902, the Regents of the University of the State of New York chartered the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume in Albany, New York, to maintain the registry of the more than 700 institutions using the intercollegiate system. This includes the colors, designs, materials, and combinations for academic attire for U.S. colleges and universities as well as those of foreign nations. The hood, which you may wear with your academic robe, incorporates the color green for the faculty of medicine and scarlet and gray for your alma mater. It distinguishes you as a “Doctor of Medicine,” a member of one of the oldest faculties in the academic society of scholars. Preserve with dignity the honor, trust, and responsibility, which are now yours.

Today, the class of 2022 joins the physicians who came before us. We vow to uphold and honor this oath: I will administer care that is respectful of patient preferences, values, and needs. Not only will I work to prevent and treat disease, but I will also care for each patient as a unique individual - mind, body, and soul. I will remember that when patients are at their most vulnerable, they selected me to care for them. I will not forget the honor this carries, as I will be entrusted with human life. I will foster an environment that cultivates quality, safety, and collaboration. I promise to dismantle barriers that impede equitable care and will challenge substandard treatments that stem from an individual’s race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or economic status. I will strive to understand and consider the repercussions my actions have outside the walls of my practice, knowing that the health of the community is as important as the health of my patients. I will be an advocate for my patients. I swear to practice principles that support accessible and just medicine. I will use my moral compass to adapt and navigate our world’s ever-changing landscape. I vow to practice with compassion for others, and compassion for myself. I will search within my heart for strength and courage, to be a catalyst for change and a beacon of hope. I will work to emerge as a leader in my practice for my patients and my community. When I feel lost and afraid, I will call upon those who have come before me. I will also help all those who turn to me when they are lost and afraid. I will share with others what I know, to continue to grow the medical profession and make it better than it was yesterday. Lastly, I will remain a humble lifelong learner and servant. I recognize the path we are on has been paved by others' hard work. I will bask in the gratitude and joy that is the gift of what it means to be a physician and to share in the gift of caring for human life. When I am at my deepest valley or highest peak, I will remember that this is my calling.
CLASS OF 2022 OATH
CARMEN OHIO
Oh! Come let’s sing Ohio’s praise, And songs to Alma Mater raise;
While our hearts rebounding thrill, With joy which death alone can still.
Summer’s heat or Winter’s cold, The seasons pass, the years will roll; Time and change will surely show How firm thy friendship–O-hi-o.
OATH OF HIPPOCRATES
I do solemnly swear By whatever I hold most sacred, That I will be loyal to the profession of medicine And just and generous to its members. That I will lead my life And practice my art In uprightness and honor. That into whatsoever home I shall enter, It shall be for the good of the sick and the well to the utmost of my power And that I will hold myself aloof from wrong And from corruption and from the tempting of others to vice. That I will exercise my art Solely for the cure of my patients and the prevention of disease, And will give no drug nor perform any operation for a criminal purpose And far less suggest such thing. That whatsoever I shall see or hear of the lives of my patients Which is not fitting to be spoken abroad, I shall keep inviolably secret. These things I do promise And in proportion as I am faithful to this oath, May happiness and good repute be ever mine. The opposite if I shall be foresworn.
