ShipLAB Report 15

December 2015

The present catalogue is a work in progress and represent a compilation of the known marine

astrolabes, and a continuation of Stimson’s work. In the ShipLAB we have compiled a list of the

known astrolabes and made a simple database with relevant information for the study of the

growing collection of marine astrolabes. Since Stimson’s 1988 publication we have compiled 40

new specimens, and we have information on another three in Portugal, two in the south and one

in the north of the country, one in Brazil, and perhaps another in the USA.

We hope that the publication of this list encourages private collectors to contact us at Texas

A&M University and help us inventory, study, and share all the existing marine astrolabes.

Most of the basic information presented in this catalogue has been recently published in the

Journal of Maritime Archaeology:

Castro, F., Budsberg, N., Jobling, J., and Passen, A., “The Astrolabe Project” Journal of

Maritime Archaeology, (2015) (2015) 10.3: 205-234.

The authors want to thank a long list of people from around the world, without whose help it

would have been impossible to put this catalogue together.
