Below is presented our code of fair testing practices. It is not intended to replace guidelines published by the BritishPsychological Society which, as Chartered Psychologists, we adhere to. It is however a statement of our aims andobjectives as a Company and an attempt to provide a brief, non-technical resumé to test users and developers ofthe principles of good practice. The Code presents standards for test developers and users in five areas:

CODE OF FAIR TESTING PRACTICES

Developing/SelectingTests

InterpretingScores

Striving forFairness

InformingTest Takers

Security ofInformation& Materials

1. DEVELOPING AND SELECTING APPROPRIATE TESTSTo aid test users in selectingappropriate tests test developers (D)should freely supply test users withappropriate information about theirproducts. To this end test developersshould:D1 Define what each test measures

and what the test should beused for. Describe thepopulation(s) for which the testis appropriate and accuratelyrepresent the characteristics, usefulness and limitations ofeach test.

D2 Provide a detailed technicalmanual for each test. Thisshould describe the process oftest development, explain therelevant measurement conceptsat the level of detail that isappropriate for the intendedaudience(s) and provideevidence that the test meets itsintended purpose(s).

D3 Provide either representativesamples or complete copies oftest questions, directions, answer sheets, manuals, andscore reports to qualified usersas required.

D4 Identify and publish anyspecialised skills needed toadminister each test and tointerpret scores correctly.

Similarly, test users (U) should becommitted to using only those teststhat meet the purpose for whichthey are to be used and that areappropriate for the intended test-taking populations. To this end testusers should:U1 First, define the purpose of

testing and the population to betested. Then, select a test forthat purpose and populationbased on a thorough review ofthe available information.Where possible this should bebased on independent testreviews.

U2 Read the materials provided bytest developers and avoid usingtests which provide unclear orincomplete information.

U3 Become familiar with how andwhen the test was developedand fully understand thetechnical data which supportsthe test.

U4 Examine specimen sets and/orsample questionnaires and testinstructions, answer sheets, manuals, and scored reportsbefore selecting a test.

6

2. INTERPRETING SCORESTest developers should help usersinterpret scores correctly. To thisend they should:D5 Provide timely and easily

understood reports thatdescribe test performanceclearly and accurately.

D6 Describe the population(s)represented by any norms orcomparison group(s).

D7 Include within the technicalmanual clear descriptions ofthe scales which will enable theuser to interpret test scores.

D8 Only supply tests to users whoare qualified to interpret suchtest scores.

D9 Indicate within the manual thelikely shelf-life of test scores i.e.how long test scores are likelyto remain valid.

Similarly test users should makeevery effort to ensure that theyinterpret test scores correctly. To thisend they should:U5 Obtain information about the

test and fully understand thepsychological characteristic(s)it measures.

U6 Interpret scores taking intoaccount any major differencesbetween the norms orcomparison groups and theactual test takers.

U7 Only use those tests which theyare qualified to administer andinterpret.

U8 Respect the limited shelf-life ofmost tests and treat testinformation in respect of whenthe results were obtained.

U9 Take into account other relevantinformation about the test takerwhich could have a bearing onthe characteristics beingassessed.

U10 Compile interpretative reportswhich are intelligible to theintended reader.

7

3. STRIVING FOR FAIRNESSTest developers should strive tomake tests that are as fair aspossible for test takers of differentraces, gender, ethnic backgrounds,or disabilities. To this end testsdevelopers should:D10 Review and revise test

questions and related materialsto avoid potentially insensitivecontent or language.

D11 When feasible, makeappropriately modified formsof tests or administrationprocedures available for testtakers with disabilities. Warntest users of potential problemsin using standard norms withmodified tests oradministration procedures thatresult in non-comparablescores.

D12 Actively strive to collect andmake available data on thefairness of all published tests.

Similarly, test users should selectand use tests in such a way as topromote equal opportunities. To thisend they should:U11 Evaluate the procedures used

by test developers to avoidpotentially insensitive contentor language.

U12 Review the performance of testtakers of different races, gender, and ethnic backgrounds whensamples of sufficient size areavailable. Evaluate the extent towhich performance differencesmay have been caused byinappropriate characteristics ofthe test.

U13 When necessary and feasible, use appropriately modifiedforms of tests oradministration procedures fortest takers with disabilities.Interpret standard norms withcare in the light of themodifications that were made.

4. INFORMING TEST TAKERSTest developers should promote anopen and informed discussion abouttest materials and procedures. To thisend test developers should:D13 Provide clear test administration

instructions, including exampletest items for completion by testtakers.

D14 Include within the technicalmanual information which willenable the test user to offer thetest taker useful feedback onhis/her test results.

Similarly test users should obtaininformed consent from test takers. Tothis end test users should:U14 Provide the test taker with

adequate information regardingthe purpose, procedure, durationand likely outcome of theassessment process.

U15 Offer guidance and supportto test takers only in so far as it isconsistent with theadministration instructions anddoes not invalidate theassessment process.

8

5. SECURITY OF TEST INFORMATION NoteMany of the statements in the Coderefer to the selection of existingtests. However, in customisedtesting programmes, where testdevelopers have been engaged toconstruct new tests, the testdevelopment process should bedesigned to help ensure that thecompleted tests will be incompliance with the Code.

This code of practice is notcopyrighted. Reproduction anddissemination are activelyencouraged.

Test developers should ensure thatthe integrity of test information ismaintained. To this end testdevelopers should:D15 Limit access to test questions to

trained test users who have alegitimate use for the tests

D16 Ensure that any materials usedin the development orvalidation of the test arereturned.

D17 Maintain copyright on testmaterials and actively pursueinfringements

D18 Ensure that all identifiable testdata collected is kept secureand only used for the purposethat was intended and forwhich consent has beenobtained.

D19 Avoid publishing any materialwhich undermines thereliability and validity of theirtests.

Similarly, test users should:U16 Store securely all test booklets

and software, restricting accessto trained test users.

U17 Respect the copyright on testmaterials and inform thedevelopers of anyinfringements which come tolight.

U18 Ensure that all test datacollected is kept secure, is onlyused for the purpose for whichit was intended and for whichinformed consent wasobtained. This should beconsistent with data-protectionand freedom of informationlegislation.

U19 When leaving an organisationmake adequate arrangementsto secure both test materialsand confidential test data.

TRAINING & REGISTRATIONWhile it has been conclusively demonstrated that psychometric tests cansignificantly improve human resource decisions and result in productivitygains; such benefits can only be achieved by competent use of these complexinstruments. Inappropriate use can not only totally negate the benefits ofusing valid selection procedures but it can also have an adverse effect onstaff motivation. To gain competence in the use of psychometricinstruments, you need expertise not only in selecting, administering andscoring tests, but also the interpretation of the results within the assessmentcontext. Correct interpretation of test results requires an understanding ofpopulation statistics and measurement theory. Responsible and ethical useof tests requires an appreciation of the limitations of tests, how to integratecomplex information and present the results to test taker and decision-maker alike.

Not surprisingly therefore in the U.K. and most other countries access topsychometric test materials is restricted to those who are suitably qualified.Eligibility is gained through academic qualifications in Psychology orspecific training in the use of psychometric tests.

If you have had no training in the use of psychometric tests, we wouldsuggest that you acquire a basic understanding of some of the salient issuesbefore committing yourself to any particular assessment materials. Withouta basic understanding of some fundamental concepts, quite simply, it will bevirtually impossible to critically evaluate the growing number of availablepsychometric tests and the claims made by their publishers.

Psytech International’s occupational assessment training services aredirected and tutored by qualified and experienced professionals. A fulltraining brochure is available on request.

All Psytech materials include details of qualification levels as follows:

Qualification Level 1No qualifications required although this category is restricted to softwareand test manuals.

Qualification Level AAvailable to anyone who can provide evidence of the British PsychologicalSociety’s Level A Certificate of Competence in Occupational Testing or(outside UK) equivalent academic or professional qualifications.

Qualification Level BAvailable to anyone who can provide evidence of the British PsychologicalSociety’s Level B Certificate of Competence in Occupational Testing orequivalent academic or professional qualifications (outside UK).

10

Conversion TrainingMany publishers offer conversion training for their own psychometric tests. This is usually justified on the basis that the instruments are sufficientlydistinct from other mainstream tests to warrant test-specific training. This isnot our policy. If you can provide evidence of competence in occupationaltesting at the appropriate level, it is our assumption that you will appreciatethe need to become fully familiar with all aspects of a test before using it in alive setting. This will invariably require careful study of the manual, including the guidelines for administration, scoring and interpretation.Should you wish to have additional expert tuition or support, we would bepleased to discuss your specific requirements.

All tests are supplied on the basis that users agree to the professionalpractice guidelines outlined previously in addition to any further localprofessional requirements. Psytech reserves the right to refuse to supplyanyone who fails to adhere to these ethical and professional standards.

GeneSys-3, the latest release of Psytech’s proprietary assessment software system, will administer, score andgenerate reports on virtually any psychometric test, questionnaire and most surveys. GeneSys supports animpressive and expanding range of established assessment materials. GeneSys can be supplied as a shell so thatdevelopers of tests, questionnaires and surveys can analyse, administer and interpret their own materials.Alternatively, existing and prospective test users can be supplied with the widest choice of tests or test batteriespre-installed within the GeneSys system.

GENESYS INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT SOFTWARE

Administration All Psytech tests (and many more)can be administered directly on-screen using GeneSys. GeneSys takescare of all the test relatedinstructions, examples and timings. It can be set up to administer asingle test or an entire battery ofmeasures. To facilitate testadministration in remote locations,GeneSys can create an install systemwith a fully working version of anyon-screen test or battery installed onthe system. These electronic versionsof the test booklets can beadministered directly from a CD orinstalled on to a stand-alone ornetworked PC. Data generated fromthe assessment can later beimported back into the main systemfor scoring and reporting.

Scoring & InterpretationData from paper and pencil tests canbe captured either via keyboard inraw or item response scores or viathe optional medium of a scanner(see below). Once the results arestored in the GeneSys database, theycan be interpreted in a variety ofways to meet particular assessmentrequirements and situations. AllPsytech tests have a choice ofassociated narrative reportsincluding individual feedback,decision-maker reports, group-reports, profile-match reports andmany more. All reports have beencompiled by psychologists withyears of experience in interpretingparticular tests. In some cases thereports have been produced by thetest authors themselves thusproviding invaluable psychologicalexpertise at the touch of a button.

Tests Supported by GeneSys GeneSys supports an impressiverange of test materials all of whichcan supplied to qualified test usersas part of the initial installation atno additional charge. Additionalmaterials can be added on requestor commissioned. This makes thewidest choice of psychometric testmaterials available within a singlesystem including:

CreditsAt the point that tests are admin-istered or interpreted, GeneSys willdeduct a specific number of credits(as outlined in this catalogue) from acounter/‘dongle’. Credits arededucted once, providing unlimitedaccess to all reports (decision-maker,feedback, etc) for the respondentassessed. Credit stock can beupdated by telephone or via thePsytech web-site and once updated, can be applied to any of the Psytechproprietary measures.

Updates and SupportFull user support is provided to thedesignated user of the system. Thisextends to both the software and theassessment materials provided withthe system. Furthermore the latestversion of the GeneSys software andall the applications (manuals, tests, reports, questionnaires, statisticalprocedures) is always available toGeneSys users as a free downloadfrom the Psytech web-site or directlyfrom Psytech.

CustomisationAll GeneSys reports and applicationscan be customised to meet userrequirements. Although GeneSystests and batteries include a choiceof different report styles, additionalreports can be designed to focus on,or fit in with specific assessmentdemands. This might includeintegrating test data with ratingsfrom other sources or interpretingthe data within a competencyframework. Customisation can beundertaken by the user with the aidof the Developer Module (see below)or by Psytech International.

ExpandabilityBecause the testing market is rapidlyexpanding and the lifespan of someassessments is limited, the GeneSyssystem has been developed on amodular basis. This not only allowsthe user to choose from an existinglibrary of available applications butprovides the user with the option toadd new materials as they becomeavailable. Any system can hold anunlimited number of differentmeasures with a virtually unlimitednumber of reports. On-goingdevelopment ensures that we willnot only keep up to date with thelatest advances in psychometrics, but aim to be at its forefront as far ascomputer-based assessment isconcerned.

SecurityTo ensure confidentiality of sensitivetest data and in accordance with theUK Data Protection Act, GeneSys hasa sophisticated password facilitywhich limits access to designatedparts of the program and database. Each member of staff using thesystem can be allocated a passwordwhich only allows access toinformation to which is appropriate.

GeneSys AdministratorAn Administrator version ofGeneSys includes all the facilities toadminister, score and interpret thefull range of tests as presented inthis catalogue. It is ideal forinfrequent users or multi-siteenvironments where the morecomplex functions are not required.

The VMI is a normative self-report questionnaire which profiles the motivating forces that are likely to determine theamount of energy or effort that an individual is likely to expend in particular activities. As such it can be used on itsown or as part of an assessment battery for selection, development, guidance and team-building. It can assist indirecting individuals into areas where they are likely to gain most satisfaction and make the greatest contribution.

VALUES AND MOTIVES QUESTIONNAIRE (VMI)

What the VMI measuresThe VMI scales have been selected not only for their relevance to theworkplace but on the basis of a thorough review of those values which havebeen identified in previous research as being important determinants ofbehaviour at work. These cover three broad areas, Personal, Interpersonaland Extrinsic. Personal values are those which could guide an individual’sdecisions in respect of everyday problems; Interpersonal values are thosewhich influence an individual’s approach to relationships and Extrinsicmotives are factors which could sustain behaviour in the workplace.

VMI reportsVMI reports consist of a profile and narrative formats written in the secondor third person. The reports have been written in a style which makes themideal to give directly to the respondent. Designed to provide a comprehensive and fully integrated psychometric assessment for career guidance anddevelopment. This test battery consists of an occupational interest questionnaire and a measure of “personal workneeds” which can be fully integrated with a choice of general or specific aptitude measures. Developed followingextensive initial trialling on a large sample of 16 to 18 year olds it has been designed so that only a basic level ofeducation is required to complete it. Since its development in 1991 it has subsequently been applied toprofessional groups with impressive results and now boasts a norm group of several thousands of working adults ina variety of occupational areas.

OCCUPATIONAL INTEREST PROFILE (OIP)

What the OIP measuresThe OIP provides a comprehensive assessment of vocational interest andpersonal work needs. The vocational interests refer to work areas which anindividual would enjoy, (e.g. administrative, computational, persuasive, practical). Whereas the work needs are related to the individual’s personalneeds within a chosen area of work (e.g. variety, structure, people, control).

OIP ReportsThese have been designed to fully integrate the results of the differentelements of the battery (i.e. the aptitude tests, the occupational interests andwork needs questionnaires) into one report which focuses upon a successfulcareer choice. Written in the second person the report has been compiled sothat it can form the basis of a discussion with a careers adviser or counsellorand then be given to the respondent to take away for further reference. Inaddition, the report produces a detailed list of career suggestions based onthe person’s profile over the range of tests taking into account therespondent’s aptitudes where available.

The very latest version of the 15FQ+ questionnaire provides a comprehensive assessment of personality.Building on the most current research, the 15FQ+ has been fully revised to make it suitable for use in theinternational business environment. Maintaining the breadth of the original 16 personality factors first identifiedby Raymond B Cattell, the 15FQ+ sets new standards for reliability and validity. Available in a long (200 item)and short (100 item) form, the test materials have been carefully designed to make them quick and easy tocomplete, score and profile.

15FQ+

What the 15FQ+ measures:In addition to assessing the original factors proposed by Cattell over 50 yearsago, the 15FQ+ fully implements the well-established Big Five PersonalityFactors which can be easily calculated from the 16 primary scores. Inresponse to increasing workplace demand, dedicated measures of EmotionalIntelligence, Integrity and Response Style are available.

Factor B was excluded from the original version of the 15FQ as it has beenknown for some time that it is impossible to measure intelligence withsufficient reliability and validity in an untimed test. In 15FQ+ this constructhas been reformulated as a measure of thinking style. This avoids thedifficulties of test administration, interpretation and feedback that resultfrom incorporating reasoning test items in a personality measure.

Personality Test InterpretersPsytech International has considerable experience in producing qualityexpert narrative reports for virtually any psychometric test or standardisedassessment. In addition to the expert reports for those personality measureslisted on previous pages, and many more not listed, we can generate, to userspecification, focused or general descriptive narrative reports for any otherstandardised personality measure or composite battery. As this requiresquite a substantial investment in committed development time it is perhapsonly cost-effective for test users who are generating manual reports on verylarge numbers of respondents. However, the primary benefit is that, oncedeveloped, the expert report is the user’s exclusive property to use on anunlimited basis without charge. In addition, the user can take advantage ofthe GeneSys Developer options (see page 10) to amend and update thereports in-house as and when required.

Why not call your local GeneSys representative to discuss this further?

Reasoning Test InterpretersReasoning tests have a long history in personnel selection and assessmentgoing back to their early use during the first world war. More recently it hasbeen demonstrated that reasoning tests have the highest validity of allselection tests as predictors of performance. Thus reasoning tests are themost frequently used group of tests in occupational selection andassessment. They are particularly useful for assessing people with limitedwork experience (e.g. returners, new graduates) and for assessing people forfurther training and development. Modules are available on GeneSys tointerpret scores on a range of reasoning tests. Reasoning Test Interpreters aregenerally supplied, on request, free of charge.
