finish the inside of a jacket, coat, skirts, dress, or pants
The Purpose of LiningPrevents the garment from
stretching
Reduces wrinkling
Attractive inside, because it covers any inseams
Covers insulation for added warmth
Selecting Lining Fabrics1. Choose lining fabric that
is firmly woven, slippery, and static-free
2. The color a jacket lining can either match or contrast with the outer fabric
3. For a dress that may have a thin outer fabric, choose a matchinglining fabric! Why?
How is a lining constructed?• Construct lining separately, then
insert it into the garment • For coats, jackets, vests, and
dresses…– The lining is stitched around the
facing edges
• For skirts & pants…– The lining is attached along the
waistband and the zipper
Sewing the lining around the zipper
Most common: hand sew the lining to the zipper
Use a slipstitch
Be sure your hand sewing does not go through to the fashion fabric side!
How to choose a lining fabric…
Always drape the garment fabric over the lining fabric…see how the two fabrics look and feeltogether!
Choosing a lining fabric…
1. Is the lining too soft or too crisp for the shape you want?
2. Does the color show through or change the color of the outer fabric?
3. Do the two fabrics have compatible fibercontent?
4. Can both fabrics be cleaned in the same manner?
5. Do they require pressing?
How to stitch the lining?1. Separately! 2. Follow the pattern directions! (5/8” seams) 3. Seam finishes (serging) may not be needed
UNLESS: the fabric ravels easily
4. Attach the lining to the garment5. Secure along zipper/closure 6. Hem (together or separate)
