LECA Curriculum Design Overview Designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and cultural capital required for their future success.

Overview of the LECA Curriculum Intent, implementation and Impact

Learning Without Limits The essence of Learning Without Limits is independence. If we ‘feed’ students information, they may learn but they don’t learn how to think. With Enquiry-Based Learning, teachers take a back step having planned an activity (or series of activities) whereby students are stretched

because they have to think their way through a task. They have to connect their learning in other lessons to the one they are in, making cognitive links and deciding which approach suits the task best. Intelligence is not a static quota and can be grown given the right conditions. The conditions are created in lessons. All students are given the opportunity to be stretched and challenged and work is not set with a limit because of their prior attainment. Students are set challenging goals rather than do your

best goals.

Impact

We use the ‘Collage of Marking’ to assess

how students are improving over time.

This makes more use of peer, self and verbal

feedback to highlight strengths and areas for

improvement. Gaps in knowledge are quickly

identified and corrections and

improvements are promoted.

Immediacy is the key and students are part

of the assessment process and party to the

marking criteria.

To check for overall fluency and knowledge

retention students sit exams twice a year.

The exams demonstrate cumulative

knowledge over time. Once again, gaps are

identified and students work on their key

areas for development.

We aim for all students to have read widely

with fluency and comprehension.

We aim to close the ‘vocabulary gap’ for all

students and particularly those from

disadvantaged backgrounds.

We aim for all students to be successful and

meet their aspirations.

We are ambitious for all learners and use our

‘Learning without Limits’ approach which

aims to be fully inclusive.

Our curriculum has been designed to provide

all leaners with the knowledge, skills and

cultural capital needed to be successful in

the future.

Our curriculum is coherently planned and

sequenced over time from Years 7-11.

We aim to provide a full range of subjects for

all learners for as long as possible.

Teachers have excellent subject knowledge

for the subjects they teach and leaders have

created a culture of collaboration, where

‘experts’ not just experienced practitioners.

The LECA pedagogy is centred on LWL

‘Learning without Limits’ and is a strong

feature in all lessons.

LWL focuses on surface and deep learning

techniques and HOT skills (High Order

Thinking) designed to promote stretch and

challenge.

Surface learning focuses on knowledge and

skills building and deep learning focuses on

application of the knowledge and steers

students towards more abstract and creative

thinking.

Developing a love of reading is a primary

focus at the Academy.
