Transforming the food system starts with healthy soil and forests! We are building planetary resilience by protecting habitat and planting trees across Vermont. These new forests protect our water, store carbon, and provide refuge for myriad plants and animals, including our precious pollinators!

Intervale Center Conservation Nursery trees are providing better habitat and bank stabilization to a Muddy Brook riparian restoration site on historically intensive hay fields that were growing a near monoculture of invasive reed canary grass. PLANTING HOPE

• Sold over 38,500 native trees to conservation projects statewide

• Propagated 64,146 stems (our most ever!) for future planning projects as we seek to significantly increase the number of trees and shrubs we will grow and plant in future years

• Completed 33 plantings, stewardship and invasive species management projects totaling 130 acres in the Otter Creek, Winooski, Lake Champlain Direct, Poultney, and Mettawee watersheds

• Purchased a second, larger greenhouse for propagation, a new tractor and implements and new cutting-edge tillage equipment to enhance Nursery sustainability and production power

In addition to growing native tree species, our Conservation Nursery works on riparian restoration projects across Vermont.

GROWING VERMONT AGRICULTUREVermont’s an agricultural state, and we are helping to strengthen this important part of our economy and identity by providing comprehensive business planning, land access, succession planning, and market development services to farms in every corner of Vermont.

• Worked with 106 farm businesses, including 56 beginning farmers

• Provided new opportunities to hundreds of farmland seekers and landowners through Vermont Land Link, an online land matching tool

• Partnered with Vermont Land Trust on 41 farmland access projects

Does’ Leap is a pasture-based, animal-powered farm in northern Vermont producing certified organic goat cheese, farm-made sausage, and whey-fed pork. Technical assistance from the Intervale Center helped us improve the viability of our Farm Store through targeted social media advertising. With the day-to-day demands of running a farm, this type of help can make all the difference in planning and executing important tasks outside our skill set. EXPANDING FOOD ACCESS

FOOD ACCESS

• Distributed 225,000 free meals throughout Chittenden, Grand Isle, and Franklin Counties in partnership with Shiftmeals and Healthy Roots as part of the Vermont Everyone Eats program. Together we worked with 65 community partners and returned $2.25 million to restaurants.

• Gleaned 64,000 pounds of fresh food from Intervale-based farms, the People’s Farm, and farms across Chittenden County

• Served over 1,000 people per week through our free CSA program and over 50 free farmers’ market events in Burlington and Winooski

FOOD HUB

• Delivered over 16,400 orders, reaching 738 households in Burlington, South Burlington and Winooski

• Continued partnerships with Vermont Foodbank’s Vermonters Feeding Vermonters Program and UVM Sodexo

• Purchased products from over 70 local farms and food producers

• Developed Vermont Way Foods in partnership with Center for an Agricultural Economy, Food Connects, and Green Mountain Farm-to-School

Everyone Eats (VEE) has been a true collaboration from the start. • Hosted four weeks of Summervale with average attendance of 800 people

• Held 39 educational workshops on topics ranging from gardening basics to bat habitats

• Hosted 11 private events at our Community Barn

At Zero Gravity, we’re committed to protecting and supporting the land and community that are the backbone of our work. We have been a long-time partner and friend of the Intervale Center, an organization that is working every day to transform the food system in our home state of Vermont. The Summervale event series that features local food, drinks, and music is a true celebration of summer in Vermont. LEADING WITH JOYWe are grateful for our beloved Intervale, this special place where we get to practice building a world where the needs of people and the health of the planet come first, a place where we can see a community food system in action, every day, and share it with you, our community.

• After years of working together to lease their land and provide access to farmers, we purchased 88 acres from the Calkins family, increasing the land we have permanently protected for agriculture and our community by 35%

• Provided land to lease to eight farms in the Intervale and AALV’s New Farms for New Americans Program

• Partnered with Vermont Community Gardening Association, Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront, and Wildways to expand community gardens, recreation, and community access to the greater Intervale

• Tracked 1,600 volunteer hours in support of our mission to strengthen community food systems — THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!

The Intervale plays a fairly steady role in my day-to-day life. I’m a trail steward under the tutelage of Duncan, I run through the Intervale at least three days a week, I’m a devoted June Farm Flower CSA-er, and have benefited from the Food Hub and the Community Farm over the past few summers, attended Summervale, been to a few Intervale Center/City Market/OGE cooking classes, and just generally enjoying being around the Intervale! I love the approach the Intervale Center takes with land management and stewardship, the diversity of programming, and the offerings the farms bring to the space.” CHASE TAYLOR Intervale Center volunteer and donor

I am so grateful for you, your encouragement, and ideas. The issues we face are massive. It’s been six years since climate change experts at the UN predicted we had ten years to act, yet global systems and governments are not moving fast enough. At the Intervale Center, we have a deep desire to accelerate our impact – help more farmers, plant more trees, build more infrastructure that will support our communities, share our story more broadly – to build a food system that is fair, equitable, and caring, that puts the health of our planet and people first.
