FESTIVAL GREETINGS

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcometo the 16th edition of the kingston Canadian

film festival, the world’s largest (and best!) all-Canadian film festival.

though it lasts a mere three-and-a-half days, kCffhas more programming than many festivals thatspan a week or longer. in addition to 23 features, the festival boasts over 60 shorts and 15 workshops.toss in some music, comedy, interactive gamingexhibits, special guests and receptions, and itsounds like a great long weekend!

While dedicated to keeping its loyal fanbase firmlyintact, the festival continues to welcome moreand more new faces. last year, we had internationalvisitors from as far away as india – a testament to how far one will travel to see the best newCanadian cinema.

As our numbers increase, we’re continually remindedof just how much we value those the charming, uniquely kingstonian festival experiences, likemovies in City hall, or seeing your neighbour’s filmin the local Shorts Program only to have your catmake a guest cameo (true story!). Can anyone buya ticket from Brian’s record option without gettingan interesting anecdote? Can you actually buypopcorn at the movies for under $5? Festival tip: yes,you can at the Screening Room – thank you, Wendy!i’ll always remember the filmmakers’ reception

when Mychael Danna brought his newly won oscarfor life of Pi and generously let patrons pass itaround and take photos. When he lost sight of it forfive seconds, the look on his face said: “oh no, ilost my oscar in kingston!” But he should knowwe’re the kind of festival you can safely share anoscar with.

My favourite festivals are always about muchmore than just watching films: they’re aboutaudiences and filmmakers coming together toshare their passions, develop understanding andmake connections. And whether that happens in line at the grand theatre or during a reception at the Delta, that’s exactly what happens at kCff.

kCff is tremendously grateful to all its amazingfestival partners, from our co-presenters tD andCogeco, to the local shops providing food andfirst-class services to our industry guests. if youhave an opportunity to support our sponsorsduring kCff – please do! last but not least, i’d liketo thank our amazing staff, supportive Board ofDirectors and our 100+ hard-working volunteerswho make kCff possible.

Marc garnissfestival Director

On behalf of the Board of Directors, welcometo the 16th annual kingston Canadian film

festival.

the festival returns each winter to showcase thebest in recent Canadian cinema, featuring work bymasters and masters in the making. guy Maddinbroke onto the scene of terminal weirdness over30 years ago when toronto’s festival of festivals(now tiff) presented his short, the DeAD fAther(famously turning down his next film, the evenmore oddball tAleS froM the giMli hoSPitAl),and he plays kingston this year with the forBiDDenrooM. one of Canadian film's most exciting newtalents, Andrew Cividino, presents his universallyacclaimed first feature, SleePing giAnt.

Documentaries and narratives, conventional and experimental, Canada produces it all, and

the festival shows whatever its long, sleeplessweekend can contain, with workshops and otherevents for the times you might weary of sitting in a darkened room with a bunch of like-mindedstrangers and friends.

We’re just as chuffed to host a special event: apersonal appearance by Scott thompson. lastyear we had Paul Bellini from the kids in the hallteam: this year, Bellini and thompson!

Sixteen. Sweet.

Blaine AllanChair, kCff Board of Directors

We here at the kingston Canadian film festivalhave long been proud to do all we can to

prove the depth and diversity of the country’sfilmmaking talent. But of all the programs we’vepresented in kCff’s 16-year history, no single oneboasts the same kind of range that viewers willdiscover in this year’s edition.

And that’s true not only of the many categoriesthat these selections occupy, whether they’renarrative works or documentaries, features orshorts, or dramas or comedies. that also appliesto the array of achievements represented in aprogram that’s wide enough to contain manystunning debuts by first-time feature filmmakersalong with several career-best works by veteranauteurs. likewise, we believe that viewers will bejust as captivated by the many intimate portraitsof characters — both real and fictional —throughout every kind of community in Canadaas they will be with the stories that take place onthe other side of the world.

A documentary that’s as emotionally rich as it isvisually stunning, this year’s opening selectionDriving With Selvi is a remarkable example ofthat globally minded category. Directed by elisaPaloschi — one of many filmmakers at kCff’16with a close relationship to the kingston area – it’salso a testament to the festival’s strong slate ofnon-fiction films. the roster of great docs includeshurt, Alan Zweig’s unforgettable film about thehard times of disgraced runner Steve fonyo; theMeSSenger, Su rynard’s beautiful and troublingmeditation on the fate of the world’s songbirds; After the lASt river, vicki lean’s affecting filmabout the Attawapiskat first nation’s saga ofsuffering and defiance; terMinAl DeviCe, amesmerizing film essay on body difference anddisability by ross turnbull; and Patrick reed andMichelle Shephard’s guAntAnAMo’S ChilD: oMArkhADr, a revealing look at Canada’s most famousformer inmate of guantanamo Bay.

of course, there’s a lighter side to the selection at kCff’16. BoreAliS, our closing night film le Coeur De MADAMe SABAli and a highlyanticipated live appearance by Scott thompsonof kids in the hall are all part of a special focus on comedy at the festival this year.

Another striking trend among the feature films is the wealth of startling debuts. not that there’s

any lack of skill or sophistication on display inAndrew Cividino’s SleePing giAnt, Stephen Dunn’sCloSet MonSter, Philippe lesage’s leS DéMonS or françois Péloquin’s le Bruit DeS ArBreS, fourfirst films that may all focus on characters whoface the toughest challenges of adolescence andyoung adulthood but whose respective directorsavoid all the clichés of the coming-of-age story.two more debut features — Sonia Boileau’s le DeP and Jamie M. Dagg’s river – deliver all thetension we expect of great thrillers but feel just as personal and unique.

other kCff’16 highlights show the benefit ofhaving an experienced director at the helm, especially when it comes to a task like enlistingethan hawke to play jazz great Chet Baker – asfilmmaker robert Budreau did to create Born toBe Blue – or delivering a generations-spanningfamily story of rare emotional depth – as Anneémond does with her justly acclaimed leS ÊtreSCherS. As for the strange case of the forBiDDenrooM – the latest by guy Maddin, made incollaboration with his former student evan Johnson– no description can accurately suggest the extentof its originality and sheer delightful weirdness.

A chilling drama starring ellen Page and evanrachel Wood as sisters facing the end of the worldas they know it, into the foreSt marks anotherhigh watermark in the career of Patricia rozema, a director with deep roots in kingston. kCff isonce again proud to showcase the work of localfilmmakers with a line-up that includes specialpresentations of WAWAhte, hoCkey’S loSt Boy andfAMily PiCtureS: StorieS of BArriefielD villAgeas well as our annual local Shorts Program. Alegendary figure in Prince edward County’s artscommunity also gets his due in Al PurDy WAShere, a new documentary by Brian D. Johnson.

Clearly, there’s a lot of ground to cover but weknow that the many screenings, workshops, discussions and other events at kCff’16 will give you all the motivation you need to keep on moving. enjoy the festival!

the opening night film for kCff’16 introduces viewers tosomeone they won’t soon forget. like many women inindia’s patriarchal culture, Selvi was trapped in an abusivemarriage at a very early age. that she escaped at all isextraordinary, but such is the degree of her courage andfortitude, she eventually achieves her goal of becomingSouth india’s first female taxi driver. Sadly, some shackles of the past are easier to shake off than others. A filmmaker, photographer and artist with strong roots in kingston, elisa Paloschi met her subject in 2004 and followed herstory closely for 10 years. the result is a richly visual andemotionally affecting documentary about one woman’sdrive to determine her own fate.

kCff is thrilled to present the local premiere of a documentary about a giant in Canadian artsand letters who had no small impact onkingston, too. After all, when Al Purdy died in2000, he left a legacy not only in the form ofthe poems that breathed new vigour intoCanada’s staid literary scene but also the A-frame cabin on roblin lake where he and wifeeurithe hosted pals both famous and infamousand which now serves as a writers’ retreat.Combining interviews, archival footage andnew musical performances of Purdy poems byfans like Sarah harmer and tanya tagaq, thisdebut doc by Maclean’s critic turned filmmakerBrian D.
