I am delighted to welcome you to the 2012 issue ofDonor News. As always, I am greatly inspired bythe generosity of all our graduates, staff andother supporters who give vital help to ourcurrent students.

Without doubt, your generosity comes at a very important time.

I am sure many of you are keenly aware of the challengesfacing many talented young people considering highereducation today. Over recent months, the review of the publicfunding of UK universities has scarcely been out of the news, and with it discussions about the increasing cost of universitytuition and what this means to students without significantfinancial support.

If we are to continue to open our doors to students with realtalent to benefit from an excellent university educationregardless of background – as I believe we must – then wehave real challenges to face. This is even more the case ifstudents from disadvantaged backgrounds can consider goingbeyond undergraduate degrees to undertake postgraduatestudy which offers access to professions such as medicine, nursing, science, teaching or law.

As a university rooted in values of aspiration and ambition tomake a positive impact in the world, we are determined thatthe principle of supporting potential and endeavour is worthdefending and will, in the end, yield its own success. However,we cannot achieve this on our own. We need to build ourfuture with those who share our values, and here I know weare not alone.

There are few investments which can have so secure a returnthan that of education made available to people with talent andcommitment. Your donations make a tremendous difference. Ithank you on behalf of all those who will continue to benefitfrom your generosity.

Fundraising is an integral part of the work ofcharities across the UK and the university sector isno exception. Miles Stevenson, Director ofDevelopment, regularly experiences the positiveimpact that donors and benefactors have on the lifeof the University of Sheffield (exempt charity X1089).

Our alumni have a fierce and quiet pride in their University.Sheffield has a special place in their hearts – and their attachmentcontinues long after graduation. Following the announcement ofthe University of the Year accolade at the 2011 Times HigherEducation Awards, one of our graduates sent a tweet saying howproud she was that “Sheffield, our lovely University, had won”, andI thought that description said a lot about the affection felt for thisplace. I know that both of the Vice-Chancellors I have served –Professors Bob Boucher and Keith Burnett – have been touchedand delighted by the depth of that feeling. Meeting studentsaround the campus and in the Students’ Union, I get the distinctimpression that they are looking forward to becoming alumnithemselves. This is a ‘university for life’.

When the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO)opened ten years ago, we were working within a university systemthat is unrecognisable today. There have been dramatic changesto the financial landscape, with the government now placing agreater onus on students and their families to contribute to thecost of higher education. The increase in tuition fees has regularlymade the headlines in recent months and it is apparent that manyof our students have a genuinely difficult time in fundingthemselves – living expenses can be prohibitive. There is a greaterreliance upon part-time jobs and parental or guardian supportand, if a student can’t count on receiving that support, then wemust find other ways to help bridge the gap.

This university is committed to the idea of inclusivity, attractingthe brightest and best students regardless of their financialcircumstances. This was one of our founding principles in 1905 –one which I am particularly proud to raise funds for – and this is

where the provision of scholarships, funded by donations fromalumni, is so important now. We’ve helped hundreds of studentsby raising over £4 million for scholarships so far, and I know thatthe recipients are extremely proud to receive this support. Theyrepresent the entire range of the student community –undergraduates, postgraduates, and home and internationalstudents. The award of a £1,000 scholarship can completelychange a student’s ‘Sheffield experience’.

Our alumni who graduated in the years between the 1950s andthe 1990s, when grants were the norm, now realise that theywere the lucky ones. Many of our donors want to ensure thattoday’s students have the same opportunities they had – theyenjoy seeing someone else having the benefit of a goodeducation. Many of our older graduates received scholarshipsthemselves and so appreciate the difference this type of helpcan make. It enhances, not replaces, funding from the state.

We use all gifts as wisely as possible, in consultation with ourdonors. Small donations can be added together to make projectshappen. A fantastic example of this collective fundraising is theestablishment of the Sheffield Institute for TranslationalNeuroscience (SITraN), which was opened by Her Majesty TheQueen and The Duke of Edinburgh in 2010. The remarkablecampaign by the Sheffield Institute Foundation for MotorNeurone Disease raised £10 million which was added to moniesraised from other sources by the University to enable the projectto happen. A public exhibition space, situated within the Librarybuilding on Western Bank, was the result of a Wolfson Foundationgrant matched by contributions channelled through DARO fromalumni and a legacy gift of £100,000 from alumna Margaret Lewis(BSc 1923). And donations by US alumni to the University ofSheffield in America campaign raised $10,000 for the recentredevelopment of the Students’ Union to benefit all our students.

During the ten years that DARO has been in existence, over£27 million has been raised, which is supporting studentsthrough scholarships, staff through grants for researchand equipment, and the University through capitalprojects such as research centres. It is a great privilege tomeet so many alumni, staff and friends who want to usetheir energy and resources in a positive way to providethis support. I want to say a very big ‘thank you’ to all ofour donors and benefactors on behalf of our students andstaff. Your support is evidence of your desire to play a partin the future of the University of Sheffield.

Matched Funding SchemeThe University took advantage of the government’sMatched Funding Scheme for higher education for athree-year period (2008–11), which enabled us to activateadditional matched funds – on top of Gift Aid. TheUniversity opted to join the top tier where, for every £3raised from donations, an additional £1 was forthcomingfrom the government. Over the three years, the Universityhas raised £11.4 million, enabling us to trigger themaximum matched amount of £2.75 million.

The Alumni FundHelping students fulfil their potential

Alumni Fund Telephone CampaignsA team of hard-working, enthusiastic students helpus to connect with alumni, parents and friends ofthe University. “These calls do have a fundraisingelement to them,” explained Jenny Farmer, AlumniFund Officer, “but they are much more than that. They are a chance for us to find out what you aredoing now and your memories of your time atSheffield. You also have the opportunity to find outwhat life is like on campus today. Our studentcallers really enjoy talking to alumni and hearingabout their experiences. And, in turn, we know thatour alumni enjoy speaking to current students.”

“Whilst working as a caller I gained an insight intothe enjoyable moments the University has createdfor people, from as early as World War II, gainingknowledge about lecturers, societies and the jobopportunities that the University creates. It makesme even more proud to be a student at theUniversity of Sheffield, and after seeing what theAlumni Fund helps to achieve, being a caller hasinspired me to donate once I graduate.”

Sarah Moffat, Alumni Fund Caller (MA student)

“I thoroughly enjoyed the chat; it really made me feela valued part of a community of students and alumni, and not just because I might make a donation. It wasgreat to catch up on what is happening at theUniversity in such an informal way. Thanks!”

Q: Did you know that if you give land, propertyor qualifying shares to a charity, you can claimIncome Tax relief and lower your tax bill, aswell as getting Capital Gains Tax relief?

This opportunity came as a surprise to Stephen Kiln (BSc1973) when he was considering how to make a donation tothe University last year. He explained, “I don’t think manypeople realise the benefits of donating shares to a charity –I certainly hadn’t bargained on the tax relief. I could havesold the shares and then given the money to the University.Instead, my accountant did some research and we realisedthat there was a great benefit to me in transferring theshares to the ownership of the University. I didn’t incur thecost of selling and there was no Capital Gains tax liability(normally 28 per cent) – either for myself or the University. There was also considerable Income Tax relief as it is givenon the full donated amount. It was an excellent thing to do –such an efficient process, with the University and myselfboth benefiting.”

The University has created the Twikker Fund to ‘house’Stephen’s donation, and he has volunteered to manage theportfolio of shares for an initial five years, with anydividends/interest being awarded to the Department ofArchaeology and the University of Sheffield Enterprise. “We were delighted to work with Stephen on setting up theTwikker Fund,” said Miles Stevenson, Director ofDevelopment. “He came to us with a very interestingproposition and we have been able to create a newendowed fund from his gift. In general, however, theUniversity’s policy is to realise the value on any donatedstocks and shares straight away as we wish to minimise riskand make use of the resulting funds as promptly as possible– in full consultation with the donor.”

One example of this process resulted in the creation of apermanent endowment. In 2008, Lady Dainton (the widowof the former Chancellor, Lord Dainton) donated £100,000of stocks and shares to the University. These were sold tocreate the Lord Dainton Scholarship Endowment. TheUniversity is now able to award several DaintonScholarships each year to assist talented students whosuffer financial hardship.

Two donors from the USA have also made the samediscovery as Stephen. “For us, donating stock directly to theUniversity of Sheffield in America, rather than selling thestock, had two distinct advantages,” said Dr Ellen Friedmanand Dr Ted Dunning (PhD 1999). “One was convenience: thegift was done all in one step, rather than a sale and then adonation. Another was that our gift was effectively larger byvirtue of not having to pay out Capital Gains tax. It reallymade sense for us to support in this way.” Monies realisedfrom this donation have been used to provide grants madeby the University of Sheffield in America.

Sheffield University Cricket ClubAnother successful year on the national stagewas enjoyed by the Sheffield University CricketClub in 2010–11. The 1st XI completed anunbeaten season to earn promotion and finishtop of the Northern 1A League. The 2nd XI had asteadier time, missing out on cup qualification inthe last game of the season, and the new friendlyXI won all but one of their matches. The AlumniFoundation provided the club with a grant of£690, which was used to purchase some muchneeded coaching gear as well as pads, helmetsand gloves.

Club Captain Chiraag Pandya said, “Theequipment has allowed us to be more inclusive tonewcomers and help strengthen the friendly XIsquad. We are also using it to train harder in whatis likely to be a tough season this year. Thanks tothe support from the Alumni Foundation, thecricket club can further grow and be even moresuccessful in future years to come.” And theirhard work has paid off, as the 1st XI reached thefinal of the BUCS Indoor Championship at LordsCricket Ground, London, at the end of January. They narrowly lost by one wicket with three ballsto spare.

Students build a better life for Roma communityA groundbreaking project – led by Architecture students Huan Rimington andHannah Martin – is helping an impoverished Roma community to build a betterlife. Huan and Hannah travelled to Romania in August 2010 to the Tarlungenisettlement in Brasov County. Alongside a team of 13 student volunteers from theSchool of Architecture, they worked together with local residents to completethe construction of a children’s playground in the heart of the settlement. Theproject received a £1,000 grant from the Alumni Foundation, which fundeddesign workshop materials, the hire of a local school (the project’s workshop),personal protective equipment and local transport in Romania. Over the past 14months, the project has also established the village’s first waste collectionscheme, fenced household territories and prevented erosion. Huan and Hannahexpressed “their gratitude to the Alumni Foundation for helping to make thisunique project possible”.

Sheffield University Natural History SocietyThis is a newly formed society, aiming to promoteenjoyment of the natural world throughout the studentcommunity. The group quickly found that manystudents didn’t own the specific and often expensiveequipment necessary to gain a full appreciation ofnatural history and so approached the AlumniFoundation for help. A grant of £1,000 meant that theywere able to purchase binoculars, identification guidesand pond-dipping kits, as well as equipment to createtheir own herbarium and insect collection.

Joel Pick of the society said, “The diversity of trips wewere able to do massively increased, as did theenjoyment of our members. We have been able toadopt a field site in the Rivelin Valley, surveying localwildlife and adding to local records. And we won theStudents’ Union’s awards for Best Special InterestSociety and Best New Society in 2011. None of thiswould have been possible without the support of anAlumni Foundation grant.”

Campus developmentsHow we are using Alumni Fund donations to enhance the University environment

Surveying equipmentThe School of Architecture was awarded £5,000 by the AlumniFund to purchase a range of updated surveying equipment.Students now benefit from digital survey equipment includinghandheld Leica laser ‘distos’ for accurate distance measuring, adigital levels station to record site topography and a digitaltheodolite for more specialised elevation recording. Lesssophisticated equipment, particularly useful for documentingexisting buildings in greater detail, such as profile gauges, callipers, folding rules, and binoculars, have also beenpurchased. “Being able to measure and record thecharacteristics of a particular site is incredibly important to thedesigner. Having access to state-of-the art equipment preparesour students for their future careers within the profession,”explained Daniel Jary, Undergraduate Course Director.

Delivering instant feedbackHow do you engage a large number ofstudents attending a lecture? Oneinspired solution implemented byProfessor Andy Dickerson, Head of theDepartment of Economics, is a set of 300personal response systems or ‘clickers’ –purchased with a £10,000 grant from theAlumni Fund. Familiar from TV quizprogrammes such as Who Wants To Be AMillionaire?, clickers provide immediatefeedback to students on how well theyhave understood the question asked, aswell as giving the lecturer feedback onhow many students have understood aparticular concept.

Andy explained, “At several pointsthrough a lecture we ask multiple choicequestions and the clickers provide uswith the students’ responses in real time, with a chart summary of their votingappearing on screen. We can ask forindividual responses or split the audienceinto groups. The system lets us monitorthe progress of individual students – andmatch their performance in lectures withtheir exam results – so we can provideextra support where it is needed. We canalso monitor attendance, which hasdefinitely gone up since the clickers were delivered!

“We are enormously grateful for thefunding. The project has been an absolutesuccess, and we have plans to extend theclickers’ use. Lectures – which can besolitary experiences for the lecturer – arenow much more engaging, which isparticularly important for our first yearswho are making the transition into highereducation.” The clickers have proved tobe popular with the students as well:“doing problems is the best way to learnand clickers provide a fun, competitiveedge which I think really helps”.

Interacting with molecules: the GibsonMolecular Imaging SuiteThis £100,000 facility was opened by Nobel LaureateProfessor Ada Yonath. It provides students and staff withan opportunity to visualise and interact with biologicalstructures at the molecular level – they are transportedinto a 3D simulation of a human cell. “It’s the first of itskind in the UK for research purposes,” said ProfessorDavid Hornby (BSc 1980, PhD 1984), the Head of theDepartment of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. “Itallows us to see how viruses, drugs and microbes reactin the body.”

Housed in the Krebs Institute in Firth Court, the suite isdedicated to the memory of Professor QuentinHowieson Gibson FRS (Hon DSc 2010), who held theChair of Biochemistry at Sheffield from 1955 to 1963.David added, “The suite has been funded through thegenerosity of alumni, staff and friends via the AlumniFund (£25,000) and by the Faculty of Science. We arealso grateful for the support of Sheffield alumnus andNobel Laureate Sir Richard Roberts (BSc 1965, PhD 1968,Hon DSc 1994), who has been a long-term supporter ofboth the Krebs Institute and the Alumni Fund.”

Soil Interaction Learning & Teaching Suite (SILTS)Geotechnical engineering (the engineering behaviour of soil and rock)plays a pivotal role in supporting all engineering infrastructuredevelopment. Students need to be well versed in the theoreticunderstanding of soil behaviour, and they also need a widerappreciation of the performance of geotechnical structures in practice.Dr Jonathan Black, of the Geotechnical Engineering Group, establishedthe vision for a bespoke facility – SILTS – to provide an interfacebetween geotechnical theory and design practice. He received fundingfrom the Alumni Fund (£8,600) and the Department of Civil andStructural Engineering for the project, and commented, “SILTS isenhancing our capabilities to deliver a first-class learning experience ingeotechnical engineering. We would like to acknowledge the supportprovided by the Alumni Fund in establishing this facility and thank themfor this positive contribution to our student learning experience.”

Theatre Workshop,Cutting EdgeThis new teaching facility, arefurbishment of the HawleyBuilding off Mappin Street, provides students and staffwith the opportunity to extendtheir experimental studio-based research into historicaland innovative theatre andperformance practices. Theproject has been funded withthe support of the Faculty ofArts and Humanities, Estates &Facilities Management and theAlumni Fund (£11,000). “Weare delighted that so manySchool of English students willbe able to sharpen theirtheatre knowledge and skills atthe Cutting Edge,” said RobHemus, Theatre andProductions Manager. “Thespace is equipped with green-friendly LED stage lighting aswell as a PA and projectionsystem and a fantastic floor forphysical theatre work. Physics and Astronomy:Undergraduate Project LaboratoryProject work is an important part of theundergraduate degrees offered by Physics andAstronomy. The department needed to upgradetheir existing facilities and approached theAlumni Fund for a grant of £6,500 to refurbish aformer teaching laboratory room and purchasea range of mechanical and electronicequipment. “The project laboratory is nowextensively used,” explained Head ofDepartment Professor David Mowbray. “Thefacility has allowed us to increase the scope ofthe projects offered to students.”

Alex Longfellow and Huw Kinsman, both third-year Physics students, are full of praise for thelaboratory: “It has provided us with everythingthat we needed to build our model. We havebeen using this home-made catapult and asquash ball to measure trajectories andprojectiles of objects to measure air resistance. We had to book Firth Hall so that we hadenough space for the experiment!”

The Krebs ArchiveThe Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology nowhouses a public memorial to Sir Hans Krebs in the form of adisplay of material relating to the world-renowned biochemist. The project was funded by a £7,500 grant from the Alumni Fund.Sir Hans Krebs (Hon DSc 1959) carried out his Nobel Prize-winning biochemical experiments at Sheffield on the crucialmetabolic cycle that bears his name. The Krebs Institute wasestablished in 1988 as a multi-disciplinary research centre tofacilitate programmes aimed at the greater understanding ofbiomolecular processes.

The space surrounding the central display case, which includesartefacts from Sir Hans’ laboratory at Sheffield, housed in the now-demolished Scala Cinema on Western Bank, has been refurbishedto accommodate three floor-to-ceiling images of Sir Hans and hiscolleagues. The Krebs family commented that the images of ‘theirdad’ were astounding and made a profound impression uponthem. This led to Paul and Helen Krebs presenting a set ofceremonial gowns and academic caps that were worn by Sir Hansat honorary degree ceremonies throughout the world; these itemshave now been added to the display.

Chris and Kathy Denison Postgraduate ScholarshipA generous donation of $17,000 by Chris and Kathy Denison has resulted in thecreation of a scholarship for a student in the Department of Geography. Chris(BSc 1971, PhD 1977), who followed a career in the Texas oil industry, met Kathywhilst he was studying at the University and the scholarship reflects theirshared affection for Sheffield.

Jeremy Ely (BSc 2011) was selected as the recipient by Head of DepartmentProfessor Grant Bigg and is now studying for a PhD, looking at ‘ice streams’. Hesaid, “These are fast-flowing corridors of ice which drain the Antarctic icesheet, and also drained the ice of ice sheets during previous glaciations. Bystudying current ice streams and the imprint of palaeo-ice streams, I hope to

make new insights into icestream characteristics and themechanisms governing theirflow. I was, of course, ecstaticto receive the scholarshipfrom the Denisons. I am reallyenjoying the challenges andthe money the scholarshipprovides means that I do nothave to worry about findingfunds for tuition fees.Hopefully, the PhD will lead toa long career as a researcher.”

Biofuels from algaeWe included a report on research beingundertaken into the importance ofmycorrhizal fungi for the nutrition and healthof wheat in last year’s Donor News. A grant of$50,000 was generously provided by the US-based Grantham Foundation for theProtection of the Environment. Their interestin the research expertise at the Universityhas continued with the award of a further$50,000 for a project in the Departments ofMolecular Biology and Biotechnology, Physicsand Astronomy, and Chemical and BiologicalEngineering. A novel method for illuminatingphotobioreactors to produce algae biomassfor biofuel production is coordinated by Dr Jim Gilmour. The team is investigatingwhether the provision of useful light energycan be increased to stimulate algal growth. Dr Gilmour said, “We were very grateful toreceive the Grantham Foundation grant. There is real potential in using microalgae asa source of biofuels and our research isalready showing positive results.”

The Lloyds Scholars ProgrammeFifteen Sheffield students are among the first to take part in the LloydsScholars Programme, which is designed to support and encouragestudents from below average income families to study at leadinguniversities. The programme – open to the Universities of Sheffield andBristol in the first instance – is providing financial support, mentoring andvolunteering opportunities. Lloyds Scholar Lee-Anne Reddey, a second-yearLaw student, said, “Being able to call myself a Lloyds Scholar and explainwhat comes with this title will make me more attractive as a graduateemployee.” And Professor Rebecca Hughes, Pro-Vice-Chancellor –International, commented, “Lloyds have set the pace with the scholarshipscheme, delivering a fully rounded programme which supports youngpeople not only financially but also prepares them for great careers andbeing active citizens. We look forward to watching this scheme grow.”

Sir Ian Kershaw Prize for HistoryWe reported in the 2010 issue of Donor Newsthat Emeritus Professor Sir Ian Kershaw (HonLittD 2009) had established a Dissertation Prizeto be awarded annually for the best dissertationin a subject outside British history. The standardof dissertations has been so high that four prizeshave been awarded during the past two years. All of the recipients have written to ProfessorKershaw to thank him. David Towriss wrote, “I have left university having had my eyes welland truly opened and feel much more aware ofthe issues and processes that have shaped themodern world. Although I have made the difficultdecision to pursue a career outside of history – I hope to become a human rights lawyer – it hasbeen my historical studies that have inspired meto follow this path”; and Laura Kay commented,“The work I did on my undergraduatedissertation, as well as the brilliantly dedicatedand encouraging History Department, hasinspired me to continue my studies here at theUniversity of Sheffield and undertake an MA inAmerican History”. The other recipients wereDavid Thomas and Kirsty Day.

The DLA Piper ScholarshipInternational law firm DLA Piper instigated the £3,000 annual DLA PiperScholarship in 2007. This year, two students from the School of Law – LukeStowe and Saul Stone – were equally outstanding and so the scholarship hasbeen split between them. They received their awards from Sir Nigel Knowles(LLB 1977, Hon LLD 2011), Joint Chief Executive Officer of DLA Piper. Hecommented, “My affection for the University of Sheffield couldn’t be higher. Thisscholarship is a wonderful idea and we’re incredibly pleased and proud to be apart of it. As the son of a Stocksbridge greengrocer, I was the first in my family togo to university. I feel it is important to help young people from all kinds ofbackgrounds to reach their full potential and encourage them to achieve the bestthey can. By investing in young talent today, we are ensuring we can face thechallenges of tomorrow.” In response, Luke Stowe said, “It’s amazing to have thisacknowledgement of my ability and progress by DLA Piper and the University. I’m hoping that this will really help me to stand out in the recruitment market.”

A lasting legacyto Sheffield

In public recognitionThe Benefactors’ Board is displayed on the wall just inside themain doors of Firth Court on Western Bank. This public‘thank you’ is where we recognise the contribution of bothour major leadership donors (£500,000 and more), startingwith our original benefactors such as local steel magnateMark Firth and the Citizens of Sheffield through their pennydonations in 1904–05, and also our legacy donors since 2001.

“It was quite an historical exercise to trace our majorbenefactors as we had to go back to the 19th century,”explained Miles Stevenson, Director of Development, “and wenow have over 50 names in that section. The board is also anopportunity for us to thank our modern philanthropists. Thelatest names to appear are Jonathan Stone and his late father,Hyman Stone (LLB 1923, LLM 1924), and the Hon Sir Sze-yuenChung (PhD 1951, Hon LLD 1985) – affectionately known as Sir SY. Jonathan and Sir SY’s representative, his son Gilbert, visited the University in July 2011 and January 2012 respectivelyto attend special ceremonies, which formed part of thedegree congregations. We were able to recognise publiclytheir generosity and formally admit Jonathan Stone, HymanStone and Sir SY to the University’s Roll of Benefactors.”

Jonathan Stone made a major benefaction to the SheffieldInstitute Foundation for Motor Neurone Disease in memory ofhis father, Hyman – who was the first directly elected Presidentof the Students’ Union. This charity’s remarkable fundraisingcampaign resulted in a donation worth £10 million to theUniversity to create the Sheffield Institute for TranslationalNeuroscience (SITraN). Sir SY, who has had a distinguishedcareer as a politician and businessman in Hong Kong, made adonation of US $1 million to support the Engineering GraduateSchool, which will be the University’s new centre forengineering research (see page 9 for more details).

Miles added, “We are very proud that the University hasattracted such generous support over the last threecenturies. The instigation of special ceremonies toacknowledge major donors and add their names to the Roll ofBenefactors demonstrates our gratitude. We prepare a publicoration for each recipient, which is read out to an audience ofgraduating students and their families and friends – afantastic opportunity to spread the word about howimportant philanthropy is to the University today.”

Boost for cancer researchThrough her generous legacy, Jean Smith – a popular member ofstaff in the Department of Finance for over 30 years from 1952 –has ensured that new cancer treatments are developed moreeffectively at the University. She bequeathed 50 per cent of herestate – over £112,000 – specifically to aid cancer research.

Professor Claire Lewis, Professor of Molecular and CellularPathology and Head of the Academic Unit of Inflammation andTumour Targeting, explained, “We will use £25,000 of the legacyto purchase an IVIS Lumina II imaging system. This is highlysensitive and can be used by our researchers to accuratelymonitor the key events in tumour growth and spread, as well asthe effects of new anticancer drugs being developed at theUniversity. It has the advantage of being non-invasive and it candetect even tiny primary and metastatic tumours.”

The remainder of Jean’s legacy has been used to set up the JeanSmith Cancer Research Fellowships. These will provide anextremely valuable source of funding for students spending ayear of research in oncology. It is intended that the recipientswill be taking a BMedSci degree or the MMedSci degree inHuman Nutrition.

A fitting tributePeter Glover (BA 1974) left the University a generous legacy gift of almost £115,000and these funds have now enabled the Department of Archaeology to create anew laboratory, which is named after Peter – the Glover Laboratory for DigitalOsteology. Peter, who died in 2008, was a larger-than-life character and a well-known personality in his home town of Borth, Wales. He had a love of military andnaval history and one of his main interests was mosaics; he formed a group whichcreated public art works for the town’s promenade and Borth Railway Station.

Sheffield is one of the top universities for osteology research; the Department ofArchaeology provides advanced training in the archaeological study of humanbones. The new laboratory contains high-quality scanning and imaging equipment, including a laser surface scanner, and software and data storage facilities. Peter’slegacy has also allowed Archaeology to buy a minibus and fossil cast collectionequipment, as well as providing funds for student recruitment initiatives. Hisgenerosity has meant that his old department has had the opportunity to enhancetheir facilities for the benefit of current and future students and staff.

Flipping world record!A huge crowd of 890 Sheffield residents – University students andstaff (including a team from the Development and Alumni RelationsOffice), alumni, families and local businesses – joined forces andflipped pancakes non-stop for 30 seconds to achieve a newGuinness World Record on 15 February 2012. They smashed theexisting record of 405 people, set in the Netherlands in 2008. Alumnus and BBC Football Focus presenter Dan Walker (BA 1998, MA 1999)kicked off proceedings alongside Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett.RAG collected donations for three local charities throughout the event –Asperger’s Children and Carers Together, Project Buzz and Paces Sheffield– and the pans used in the Big Flip were donated to local voluntaryorganisation St Vincent's.To see a video of the Big Flip action visitwww.sheffield.ac.uk/acs/worldrecord

Sporty students from the University of Sheffield are hoping toenhance their performance thanks to a revolutionary pitchredevelopment fit for world-class players. The University is thefirst in the country to install such an extensive range of state-of-the-art playing surfaces at the Goodwin Sports Centre, cateringfor a variety of sports including hockey and football. The rugbypitch – named the John Hawley Pitch – is the result of the visionand generosity of the late John Hawley, an Engineering graduate(BEng 1973) and former Deputy Director of the University’sCorporate Information and Computer Services.

John played for the University’s Rugby League Club and his wish was to make asignificant charitable donation to the University in order to enhance a sports project. His widow, Pauline Ellis, said, “We are delighted to see the installation of the newJohn Hawley Pitch. Sport, especially Rugby League, meant a lot to John and it is afitting tribute to see so many students benefiting from his support.” AndrewGwilliam, Alumni Rugby League member and former Rugby League Club player, said,“John arrived at Sheffield when the Rugby League team was in its first years. Heregularly spoke fondly of his memories of these early days and enjoyed reminiscingabout the camaraderie and the great friendships he made. The generous donationleft to the University is testament to exactly how much of an influence the RugbyLeague Club had on his life. The John Hawley Pitch will go on to benefit many youngpeople’s lives, just as University sport benefited John’s life all those years ago.”

In addition to the John Hawley Pitch, a memorial garden is situated at the mainentrance to the lower pitches, overlooking the area supported by John’s family. Thecentre point of the John Hawley Memorial Garden is a stone circle with a benchsurrounded by raised planters. Simon Frost, General Manager of Sport Sheffield, commented, “It is fantastic that the Hawley family have been so generous in theirdonation. The pitches at Goodwin Sports Centre make a significant contribution to thestudent experience and will assist with the development of many community groups.”
