VT Voltage Designations

14400/24940YThis unit is rated for 14400 operating Volts. It can be connected at14400 Volts line-ground on a 24940 Volt system (line to line Volts are24940 V) OR it can be connected line to line on a system with 14400V line to line. This unit is not suitable for operation at 24940 Volts.The "Y" indicates it has two fully insulated bushings, suitable for lineto line connection.

14400/24940GYThis unit is rated for 14400 operating Volts. It can be connected at14400 Volts line-ground on a 24940 Volt system (line to line Volts are24940 V). It CANNOT be connected line to line. The "GY" indicates itonly has one fully insulated bushing, making it suitable for line toground connection only.

14400/14400YThis unit is rated for 14400 operating Volts. It can be connected at14400 Volts line to line.

14400/14400GYThis unit is rated for 14400 operating Volts. However, it can only beconnected line to ground on a 14400 V system. Therefore the actualoperating voltage of the unit would be 14400/1.73. The accuracy andthermal ratings of this unit are based on 14400 V. This is typicalwhere there is a relay connected to the unit which should operatewhen there is a single line to ground fault. In this condition, the line toground voltage becomes equal to the line to line voltage. This unit isnot suitable for line to line connection as indicated by the "GY".

CT Rating Factors: Rating factors given in this brochure are standard at 30ºC. See thethermal loading guide on page 70-71 for derating for higher averageambient temperatures.

INSTRUMENT TRANSFORMERS insulatemeters or other instruments from high voltagesand currents and transform them (i.e., step-down)to values where they can be measured bystandard meters.

All instrument transformers are classified aseither current transformers or voltagetransformers. They are used for revenue meteringand also with relays and indicating instruments.

Current Transformers (CT)The primary windings of current transformers areconnected in series with the line and theirsecondaries connected to the current coils orelements of meters, relays or instruments. Allstandard current transformers have a 5 Ampererated secondary regardless of their primarycurrent.

Each current transformer has specificationsbased on continuous current, short time current,and mechanical stress. There are two accuracyclassifications: one for metering and one for

relaying. The metering accuracy classificationtells what error in transformation can be expectedat normal currents. The relaying accuracyclassification tells what percent accuracy can beexpected when the secondary is called upon toinduce a certain voltage.

The secondary of the current transformer shouldalways be connected to a load (burden) or shortcircuited. If the secondary is open circuited, thetransformer may develop a dangerously highsecondary voltage.

Rating Factor: The factor by which the nameplateprimary current of a CT is multiplied to obtainmaximum primary current that can be carriedcontinuously without exceeding the limitingtemperature rise. The accuracy class at the ratingfactor point should be the same as at nameplaterating.

Voltage Transformers (VT)The primary windings of voltage transformers areconnected across the line. They step down the

line voltage to a value suitable for standardmeters, normally 115 Volts or 120 Volts.

In basic construction, voltage transformers aremuch like distribution transformers except thatthe current and the kva capacity are very low.They are designed to give an accurate voltagetransformation.

SelectionA number of considerations are involved inselecting proper instrument transformersincluding: system voltage, BIL, load current,rating factor and accuracy class at specifiedburdens. Physical requirements such as indoor oroutdoor installation, window or bar type (for 600 VCTs), and window diameter are also important.Many of the transformer types listed in thiscatalog have some characteristics that areduplicated in other types listed, but each type hasits own unique combination of features that bestmeet the application for which it was designed.

Polarity: Designation of the relative instantaneousdirections of the currents entering the primary leadsand leaving the secondary leads. When current isflowing toward the marked primary lead, it is flowingaway from the transformer in the marked secondarylead.
