FROM THE

WelcomeChancellorAs Chancellor of the University of Surrey it continues to be my great pleasure to be associated with such a successful and forward-thinking institution. A particular highlight of my role is the opportunity to preside at these ceremonies and confer degrees upon students graduating each year.

You have my warmest congratulations. Your achievements have come in the face of incredibly testing and demanding challenges brought on by the pandemic, and I have whole-hearted admiration for your determination and spirit.

I sincerely hope that you have enjoyed your time here at Surrey. A university education opens the door to great opportunities, and I have no doubt that your qualification, together with the wealth of experiences you will have enjoyed during your time with us, will be of great value to you, both as you embark upon the challenges that await you in the next stage of your career and throughout your life.

I hope that you will continue to be as proud and supportive of us as we will be of you. We look forward to hearing of your achievements in the future – so do please keep in touch.

WelcomeVice-Chancellor

FROM THE

I am delighted to welcome you, your family and friends to this graduation ceremony.

This is an exciting moment to celebrate your success and reflect on your accomplishments.

Not only have you achieved a qualification from the University of Surrey through hard work, but you have done so in the face of the unprecedented challenges thrown at you such as the pandemic.

Your resilience and tenacity amid great uncertainty, worry and stress can only be admired and it will stand you in good stead as you build a successful and rewarding future. I’m proud that you are graduating from one of the best universities in the UK, renowned for our excellent teaching, research and innovation, and you are well prepared to make a difference in the world.

You can be confident of going forward ready for anything, equipped with qualities of critical thinking, agility, perseverance and creativity.

Our ambition to improve everything we do is unquestionable and supported by your feedback, as we’re committed to improving further on students’ satisfaction and teaching quality.

Our ambitions are far-reaching.

In February we launched our first fund-raising campaign – The Future Says Surrey – with the aim of raising £60 million over three years to support students and research. As you make the transition from student to alumni, you can play a pivotal role in helping us achieve our goal and help to shape the University of the future in the areas of student support, artificial intelligence, health and sustainability.

I encourage you all to consider joining the Campaign – whether by fundraising, sharing your story on social media, or volunteering your time - confident that your Surrey experience will inspire future students.

Although your studies may be over, you will always be part of the Surrey community. Today you join our global family of more than 129,000 alumni, who support one another and make great contributions to society.

I wish you all the very best for the future. I hope you will leave Surrey with fond memories, lifelong friendships and a strong sense of pride.

Wherever tomorrow and the rest of your life take you, remember that Surrey is your intellectual home, now and always.

FROM THE

WelcomeExecutive DeanOur Faculty brings together scholars and students from an extraordinary range of academic disciplines in a community dedicated to thinking and learning about the arts, humanities and social sciences. We help our students to think imaginatively and creatively, to ask questions, to design better ways of doing things and to question established patterns of behaviour.

The global pandemic has illustrated the fragility and importance of our health, but it has also shown the important contribution arts, humanities and social sciences have played in responding to the pandemic. Before vaccinations could be developed economists and experts from business needed to guide the protection of jobs through financial interventions; political scientists, psychologists and sociologists assessed how far we could change the behaviour of people and society, while lawyers sought to balance the need to protect our freedoms and ensure our health. Throughout the lockdowns we have all sought solace through looking forward to being able to travel on holiday, listen to music, enjoy literature and perhaps watch more TV and movies than is good for us.

Recent experience has reminded us about the value of different types of education. We need people with expertise from across all academic disciplines to think about problems and make the contributions that they can. Our society has never been more inter-connected. We feel together, but we can also work better together. We need bright people able to think from different perspectives.

Our students graduate into a society that faces many challenges. We see examples of technology being developed at a faster pace than society is able to accommodate, and we see actions that lack compassion, care and understanding. We see a society that needs to learn how to celebrate and benefit from people’s freedoms and differences and we need to learn to live happily and well on a planet that is showing us every day how there are limits to what it can continue to give us.

The students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences are well-equipped to take on these challenges and to go and make a difference in society.

We wish all our graduands the very best for their exciting futures.

50 yearsOVER

The University of Surrey’s first degree conferment ceremony was held in University Hall at Battersea in December 1966, and some of our other

early ceremonies took place in Central Hall, Westminster. When we moved to Guildford in 1966, the Civic Hall and other local locations around Guildford

were used for graduation ceremonies. Since July 1970, by kind permission of the Dean and Chapter, degree conferment ceremonies have been held in Guildford Cathedral. On these occasions it is used as a secular building.

OF GRADUATING STUDENTS

A LITTLE

HISTORY

University of Surrey | Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences | 20-22 July 20226 7SURRE Y. AC .UK

The arms of the University of SurreyThe University of Surrey coat of arms marks the University’s move from London to Guildford. The woolpacks on the shield are taken from the arms of the Borough of Guildford, while the blue and gold chequers and mantling are from the arms of the former Earls of Surrey. The swords, an allusion to the arms of the City of London, are taken from the shield of Battersea Polytechnic.

The blazon of the University’s coat of arms, which was granted in 1966, is topped by a stag resting its right leg on an upturned key. The stag denotes the medieval royal hunting park on which our leafy Stag Hill site has been developed, while the key is a heraldic symbol of learning.

The coat of arms is an elegant symbol of our reputation and standing.

The maceThe University mace was designed and crafted by Desmond Clen Murphy, and was used ceremonially for the first time at the Installation as Chancellor of the Rt Hon the Lord Robens of Woldingham in the Civic Hall, Guildford on Saturday 22 October 1966.

The mace is made of silver and walnut wood, with the shield of the University coat of arms on its head in colour, and with the shields of the coat of arms of Surrey County Council, Guildford Borough Council and Battersea Polytechnic Institute engraved in silver underneath. The embroidered coat of arms on the mace table, carried out in metallic thread, French knots, applied leathers and various materials, was created by Christine Habib, a former student of the Hampton School of Embroidery.

The mace was presented to Guildford Cathedral for permanent display on 13 July 1997.

HONORARY GRADUANDS

Mr Ian Ricketts – Ceremony 16

Ian Ricketts was born in Wimbledon but following the Battle of Britain and his father’s expertise in first aid the family moved to Hertfordshire. On being conscripted for National Service he registered as a Conscientious Objector and spent two years in the Friends Ambulance Unit International Service (FAUIS), firstly TB Nursing and then with the Forestry Commission.

Originally intending to farm he realised during the statutory practical preceding agricultural college that he was not by disposition a scientist. As apart from the countryside his aspirations arose from Shakespeare, he persuaded his parents that he be allowed to train as an actor at LAMDA. He then worked variously in regional theatre, the RSC, West End, radio and television, where he developed both craft skills and those of survival.

With the prospect of a family to support he read a BEd in English and Philosophy and in 1970 he was engaged by Bice Bellairs to teach at GSA and initiate Drama as a General Studies option at the University. Over the years this diversified into Shakespeare for Soviet teachers and pioneering employment of actors in the training of doctors. Viewed sceptically at first this is now an established practice.

He is still occasionally an actor.
