As we contemplate the last 20 years of serving children in our community, we want to turn our focus from the pain in our community to the people, the volunteers and the organizations who bring healing, joy and hope.
Liberty House is only one of the rich assets for children in our community. Many different organizations throughout Marion and Polk counties contribute to helping children thrive.
Hard working individuals, like you, who have dedicated themselves to making a difference, build the foundations of these groups.

We are astounded by the support the community gives every month. Dozens of volunteers come through our doors to make kids feel safe. Hundreds of people donate their hard-earned income to our programs. Many organizations collaborate with our programs and take trainings to help prevent child abuse.

About UsLiberty House serves Marion and Polk counties by providing child-focused, high quality assessment and counseling services for children referred for concerns of abuse, neglect, trauma or grief. With compassion and expertise, medical providers conduct complete medical evaluations for children in a setting that is welcoming and comfortable. Core services include an interview, medical check-up and family support. Follow-up trauma-informed counseling for children and families is available through our Hope & Wellness Services, as well as various classes and seminars for issues related to parenting, safety, trauma and development. Trainings are also available to individuals and groups via certified facilitators of Darkness to Light's Stewards of Children® Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training.

Dear Jackie,I hardly know what to say. The news of your passing hit me hard. I was out of town, at a statewide meeting of child abuse centers. We were talking about child abuse prevention. At some point during the meeting, I looked up and one of my colleagues pointed to her phone. Trying not to be noticed, I clicked and saw a text from a friend in the Capitol. Everything seemed to go silent and I could feel my heart pounding. It felt like the life had been drained from the room.
In the moment, my emotions were mixed because I was both relieved that your suffering had ended and devastated that I would never see you again. Throughout the rest of that meeting and that evening, memories poured through my soul. I remembered when we first met in the Spring of 2008. You were already well respected and a legendary leader in our community, but you took the time to meet me and learn about me; I had just joined the Children and Families Commission at Marion County. We were all torn up when Ted
died later that summer. After that beautiful ceremony at the Capitol, you found me in the crowd and embraced me, even though we were all there to support YOU.
In the years since then, we connected on multiple projects to improve conditions, responses and services for children and their families. You
were a uniquely gifted leader with a very big heart. As you grew older, your heart only grew bigger. You never forgot your core values or the
change you wanted to see in our community for children. Children were a priority for you. I’ll always remember standing with you in the bitterly cold April rain and wind, watching those blue ribbons being hung on the tree by the linemen from the electric company. Too many ribbons. We had more work to do.
When I went to work for Liberty House in 2013, your support made all the difference, and I hope you felt gratitude from all of us. One of my favorite moments was during the 2017 Grand Opening of the Liberty House Children’s Garden. I loved honoring you with the flowering cherry tree we planted in your honor. You were a special friend to Liberty House and to me, and that cherry tree is an everlasting tribute.
When we last spoke a few short weeks ago in your office, it was already clear that the Legislature was going to be struggling to
fund the right things. I know that stress weighed heavily on you. Yet you listened patiently and asked for more data. Something that you
mentioned toward the end of our conversation made it clear you wanted to have a follow-up conversation. I’m crushed that we will never be able to do that. I will never know what you wanted to talk about, but I suspect it had something to do with your core vision of improving things for children. Be assured we will pick up the pieces and carry forward your vision and take care of those children for you. Never you worry.
I do wish we could have had that one last conversation. I wish I could have one more opportunity to give you a kiss and tell you I love you, but I am so glad I was able to do that the last time we were together. I can’t even imagine what your wonderful family is going through. Many blessings to them as they navigate their sadness. We will always be here for them as well.
Senator Winters, I miss you terribly. Thank you for being a fantastic leader, mentor, and may you rest in peace.
