DIJON PERFORMING ARTS CENTERDijon, France

Arquitectonica is the master planner, architect and interior designer for a new 30-acre (12-hectare) mixed-use district in Dijon, France. The development included a new symphony hall/opera house, a new 600-seat conference center, a convention hotel, a retail center, eight new office buildings, a parking garage for 2,000 cars and a major expansion and renovation of the existing convention center and exposition grounds.

The composition of modern structures is crisscrossed by pedestrian walkways that lead to boldly-shaped exterior

courtyards carved out of the solid mega-block. The new Performing Arts Center bridges over the boulevard, acting as a gateway from the modern city to the historic district.

Inside, the geometry of patterns is derived from the plan of the curved building. Its pattern can be found on the terrazzo floor, various wood walls and the balcony railings. Local pink granite is used throughout the Performing Arts Center. The acoustics of the Grande Salle are adjustable and have a minimum reverberation time of two seconds.

THE BRONX MUSEUM OF THE ARTSBronx, New York

The first phase of the project includes new galleries and administration spaces and an outdoor sculpture court. The mid-block structure is part of a larger plan for which Arquitectonica has designed additional galleries, classrooms, an auditorium, a children’s art center and a residential tower that will anchor the corner where the original museum currently sits.

Internally, the galleries rise together with the steep and impenetrable solid-rock site. Ramps and stairs lead to a series of simple, austere spaces. Concrete floors and ceilings, steel cable railings, and a sleek exposed lighting system

by renowned French lighting designer Herve Descottes of L’Observatoire create neutral functional spaces. The pure orthogonal geometry of the galleries is violated only by the expression of the folded front facade on one side. The upper gallery opens to a walled-in sculpture garden, surprisingly set on grade more than 30 feet (9 meters) above Grand Concourse. The open arrangement of galleries, visible upon arrival, is intended to convey a message of accessibility. The community gallery is visible from the street as well as from the lobby, cafe and shop and is passage to the ramp that leads to the other galleries.

SARASOTA HERALD TRIBUNESarasota, Florida

OFFICE

Owned by The New York Times Company, this new 71,250 SF (6,620m2) facility houses the editorial offices of The Sarasota Herald-Tribune and the broadcast studios of SNN Channel 6 Television. This architecture capitalizes on the natural environment with big overhangs and louvers to create shade on the facades while allowing natural light to penetrate the interior spaces and allowing for cross ventilation of the space.

Arquitectonica looked for a design that would recognize and pay homage to the modernity and originality of the local architecture while at the same time turning to the next page, taking it a step further. Modern technology was the key to accomplishing this as it allowed for a building that was far more weather resistant and fuel-efficient. New insulated,

hurricane-resistant glass allowed for vast expanses of glass without the need for the hurricane shutters, which were a necessity in the recent past.

The glass is banded both horizontally and vertically -- a subliminal reminder of the overhangs and louvers that are prevalent on landmark buildings in the area. The offices are designed with a flexible floor plan that allow for change that may be mandated by innovations in technology. The employee cafeteria, situated on the top level along the street, adjoins a covered terrace above the entrance lobby allowing outdoor dining. The terrace also provides a dramatic space for staging community events for which the newspaper is also known.

BANCO DE CREDITO HEADQUARTERSLima, Peru

OFFICE

The building serves as the headquarters and operations center for the largest bank in Peru. The building contains 530,000 SF (49,300m2) in five levels. The levels are visually connected at the main lobby, a dramatic elliptical glass block atrium that traverses the entire building. The compound includes, in addition to the banking and trading floors, a 350-seat acoustically-fitted auditorium, a computer center, a gallery, a cafeteria and a fitness center. Public uses are separated from the secured areas and identified as volumes that slide through the building’s 30-foot (9-meter) high ground floor colonnade. Roof areas are used for a jogging track and lap pool and are linked to the fitness center below. The roof also contains a heliport and a telecommunications center.

The skin of the building reflects the dichotomy of old and new, of public and private. The outer skin is comprised of

stripes of blue glass and black marble, relating to the modern city and the corporate image. The courtyard skin is made of irregularly cut native pink slate with randomly punched square windows, relating to a more informal and human imagery. The pure square is further activated by a series of white stone volumes making reference to old architectural forms, such as Lima’s renowned enclosed balconies, and more modern plastic forms prevalent in post war Latin America.

The Banco de Credito Headquarters was the firm’s first corporate and international project. Its creative use of color through noble materials - marble, slate and glass - and the introduction of monumental spaces demonstrated the firm’s skill in balancing innovation and elegance.

BANQUE DE LUXEMBOURG HEADQUARTERSLuxembourg

OFFICE

The project involved the design of a 160,000 SF (14,900m2) corporate headquarters for a bank in downtown Luxembourg, at the focal point of the financial district with 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th century buildings. The building is developed within a tight envelope defined by zoning regulations. The building has eight levels below ground and six levels above ground and contains an auditorium, trading rooms, a vault, a computer center, meeting rooms/classrooms and dining areas.

Behind the bank, a small formal park links the new building with a 20,000 SF (1,860m2) dining and conference pavilion, which, although a new structure, is designed in nineteenth century idiom to integrate with the existing structures along the back street. The design of the conference and dining pavilion is a reconstruction of the French Embassy building that was once situated there.

WILKIE D. FERGUSON U.S. FEDERAL COURTHOUSEMiami, Florida

Arquitectonica being the Master Planner, Design Architect, and Architect of Record, ArquitectonicaINTERIORS was the interior designer for this national award-winning federal courthouse in downtown Miami. This is Arquitectonica’s most prominent project for the federal GSA’s Design Excellence Program. It is representative of the new architecture being sponsored by the US government for major civic buildings. The Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Federal Courthouse innovates in function, image and urban design. The scope included integration of a new 550,000 SF (51,100m2) courthouse building into a judicial campus composed of six buildings constructed between 1910 and 1975, and in anticipation of the future development of the campus. Its urban location in downtown had urban design implications beyond the campus boundaries. The building also addresses contemporary challenges of security, sustainable design, budget restraint, and the dialectic about classicism, modernity, longevity and symbolism.

The solution redefines the American courthouse. Functionally, it groups courtrooms in pairs on either side of a public space. This arrangement allows for direct access between courtroom and chambers and defines private foyer areas for visitors within a monumental/symbolic atrium space. The exterior imagery is both balanced and abstract. The towers symbolically counterpoint as one subtly recedes and the other projects. Multi-story windows explain, by their scale and composition, the functions within the complex, from offices to jury areas, from courtrooms to chambers to circulation.

In addition to the courtrooms, the building provides space for multiple departments and uses including the US Attorney’s Offices, US Probation Offices, US Marshal’s Offices, judicial chambers, clerks- offices and ancillary facilities.

GOLDEN MOON HOTEL & CASINOChoctaw, Mississippi

The central-Mississippi location gave a completely open landscape with which to work. The design was meant to define the landscape, to be seen from miles away and serve as a beacon or focal point. The result is a classic flowing structure that starts lower at one end, winds around the casino area and gradually grows taller on the other end, peaking with an eighty-foot diameter brightly lit moon-like sphere that sits 310 feet (95m) above ground and can be seen from miles away. Cascading curtains of water will surround the base of the building on the outside, while a circular path through the hotel leads visitors to the health spa, restaurants, bars and other entertainment options all overlooking the main casino floor below.

This first phase of the expansion program for the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians includes a new 80,000 SF (7,435m2) first-class gaming casino and a 572-room hotel building with corresponding access roadways, administrative areas and back-of-house functions, parking and infrastructure; as well as complimentary uses and amenities such as retail, restaurants, lounges, meeting rooms, fitness center and health spa, beauty salon and barber shop and pool areas.

Also included in this first phase is a 480-car parking structure. Arquitectonica designed the architecture for the Golden Moon Hotel Casino, retail expansion of the Silver Star Resort. ArquitectonicaINTERIORS designed many of the interior spaces for the projects.
