Dear friends & fellow members,

As we move into the second half of this year, I am pleased to highlight the key initiatives that have been put into place at the Club. Last September 2010, we did away with the French Restaurant and brought in Ban Heng Seafood Paradise offering you wider Teochew & Seafood cuisines. This had proven to be much more popular.

This year in April, Soul Spa was opened offering wellness &holistic Spa services catering to members with differentphysiological and lifestyle needs. In the month of September, Ten Dollar Club Entertainment opened with exciting Family-KTV in state-of-the-art audio and visual settings, in a fully refurbished outlet. There are 18 private KTV rooms and 9 individual studio-hub. I was informed that Ten Dollar Club’s complimentary KTV trial for “members only” from 1st to 14th September received overwhelming response.

I understand that from 15 September 2011, members can also look forward to the Local Menu offered at the Coffee Corner. The Club has also in store for you exciting festive and year-end events & activities, fun trips, countdown parties, fabulous Executive Suite Stay packages. Do check these out with the Club.

The Club has recently upgraded the Barrier System at the main entrance. Other upgrading works include the newly-rejuvenated Sauna and Steam Rooms. The General Committee will share with you more upgrading works made in the Club, which includes the Executive Suites in due course.

Yours truly

Deepavali, also known as the ‘festival of lights’, is the most important festival forHindus, and is celebrated by Hindus all over the world. A celebration of good over evil, the festival traces its legend to commemorate Lord Krishna’s triumph over notorious demon, Narakasura. The people lit lamps to celebrate this victory and to welcome Lord Krishna. On this day, Hindus mark the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness by lighting oil lamps.

On the morning of Deepavali, the Hindus usually wake up early in the morning and perform the first ritual of having an oil bath. They would put on new clothes and go about paying respect to their elderly relatives. Family members would then go to the temple together to worship and pray for happiness and prosperity on this auspicious day. In the evening, families would gather to light up candles and oil lamps, in keeping the Deepavali tradition. Hindu families also practice preparing and sharing sweets and snacks.

In Singapore, the streets of Little India will be transformed into a fairyland of gaily decorated, brightly lit streets bustling with shoppers. Festive bazaars and numerous cultural activities such as the Indian Heritage and Craft Exhibition, Street Parade, Countdown Concert are also held. The festive stalls are decorated with fragrant flowers, garlands used during prayers, traditional oil lamps and beautiful sarees with intricate brocade patterns and glittering gems. Colourful Indian outfits, intricate costume jewellery and traditional arts and craft are also on sale. Indian delicacies can also be found in abundance during this period.

Hari Raya Haji, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice” is celebrated over a period of three days by Muslims all over the world. It commemorates the Prophet Ibraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Ishmael. According to the Islamic calendar, Hijrah, this festival starts on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja, 70 days after the holy month of Ramadan.

Muslims celebrate this auspicious day to mark the end of Hajj, the annual holy pilgrimage to Mecca. Each year, Muslims make their journey to the Holy Land of Mecca in Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj. A requirement of the Islam religion, all able-bodied Muslims with the financial means must perform the Hajj at least once in their lifetime. This act is not just a demonstration of the solidarity between Muslim men and women, but also of their complete submission to God.

During Hari Raya Haji, Muslims will be dressed in their finest clothing to perform the Eid prayer, reflect upon the sermons and offer thanksgiving and seek forgiveness. The men will then sacrifice the sheep, goats and cows. This act symbolises Prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to sacrifice his own flesh and blood. The meat is then packed and distributed among the Muslim community, especially to families who are less fortunate.

During this season, Muslims also reinforce family bonds and renew social ties by visiting their parents, relatives and friends for a hearty lunch and merrymaking. One can be part of this festival in Singapore by going down to areas of celebration such as Geylang Serai and Kampong Glam, where lively bazaars and dazzling local decorations are held to mark this important day for locals and visitors to soak in the atmosphere.

As the name suggests, the New Year Day marks the beginning of a new calendar year and is the oldest of all holidays. The Gregorian calendar is now used by many countries as the official calendar, marking New Year Day as the 1 January, continuing the practice of the Roman calendar. The order of months in the Roman calendar has been January to December since King Numa Pompilius in 700 BC. Another widely used calendar would be the lunar calendar, one that is based on the cycles of the lunar phase. The Chinese, Hebrew and Hindu uses the lunar calendar for their respective cultural and traditional practices. Many cities and countries across the world celebrate the New Year with much pomp and pageantry. Fireworks display and parties would be held. During the countdown, party dwellers will sing the all-time favourite Auld Lang Syne to bid the old year farewell. The tradition also includes making New Year resolutions. Parties often last well into the night after the ringing in of a brand new year in the company of family and friends.

In Singapore, several countdown parties take part across the island. One popular party is held right at the heart of Singapore city center at the Marina Bay, where thousands of Singaporeans converge to usher the New Year with shared aspirations and optimism. The highlight of this party is the spectacular fire works and the musical extravaganza presented by both local and foreign artists.

Bring your little ones to the Club and join us at the Children New Year Countdown Party specially organised for them. Thrill the children with our exciting games and attractive prizes and goodie bags. They will also enjoy the party food prepared for them. while counting down to the New Year with sparkles. Check out more details on page 15.

Every year more than 400 million people worldwide celebrate Christmas, making Christmas one of the most celebrated festivities.

Christians believe that the story of Christmas begins in Bethlehem with the birth of Jesus Christ, the promised Son of God. In approximately year 300 A.D., the birthday of Jesus was determined to be on December 25.

Ever wonder how ‘Santa Claus’ evolves? The origin begins with Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, Turkey in the 4th century. St. Nicholas was a generous man, particularly devoted to children. After his death, he was buried in Myra, but Italian sailors purportedly stole his remains and removed them to Bari, Italy, greatly increasing St. Nicholas’ popularity throughout Europe. His legend was kept alive by the Dutch who brought this devotion to America in the 17th century and here the Anglican name of Santa Claus emerged.

Today, Santa Claus is often portrayed as a jolly, benevolent, plump man with a big, white beard, black boots, a big red coat and an infectious laugher. Children eagerly await his visit as he brings Christmas gifts to children in the late night ofChristmas Eve.

By early December, families will decorate their homes with Christmas trees, coloured lights and other decorations. Christmas is also associated as a time we remember the poor and unfortunate and share our good tidings with them. We also express appreciation to our loved ones with gift exchanges and Christmas feasts. The Catholics celebrate Christmas with a midnight service or mass in churches to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas in Singapore is a month-long festival with the annual Christmas light up along Orchard Road, magical decorations illuminating each shopping mall, sales, parties and choirs carolling away angelically. The absence of cold weather and snow in this tropical climate will definitely not dampen Singaporeans’ spirit to be jolly!

Join us on 23 and 24 December 2011 (Friday and Saturday) at the ACC Lobby to herald in the joys of Christmas with beautiful carols. Check out the details on page 15.
