Max Herr, a 75-Year-old Ger-man Clockmaker, retired at theend of March after keeping theVatican's clocks running ontime since 1929.

Every Friday morning hemade his rounds through thepapal apartment and Curia of-fices winding and resetting thenearly 50 pendulum clocks inthe Vatican, and checking andrepairing when necessaryscores of others.

Among the clocks he wasresponsible for were precioustimepiecres^dating back to the1700s, including gifts to popesfrom emperors, kings and prin-ces.

Known affectionately as Maxall over the Vatican, Herr was afriend to the six popes heworked under.

Pope Pius XII used to tell himthat he wanted his clocks, in-cluding hjs pocket watch, set aquarter-hour ahead of the ac-tual time.

WASHINGTON (NC) - TheDaughters of Isabella, an inter-national Catholic women'ssociety, has made a commit'ment to a $1 million en-dowment of the National Cen-ter for Family Studies of theCatholic University of America.

This endowment will enableCatholic University to beresponsive to and supportive ofthe needs of the CatholicChurch in North America inrelation to the issue of familylife," said Dr. Edmund D.Pellegrino, president of theuniversity.

The National Center forFamily Studies began in Sep-tember 1979 as a planningproject, initiated by the univer-sity's National School of SocialService and funded by grantsfrom the Raskob Foundationand the Catholic Daughters ofthe Americas.

Father Steven Preister, direc-tor of the center, said the en-dowment will fund scholar-ships in family studies at theuniversity ana provide for apermanent staff of researchersand teachers for the center.

Last November the board ofdirectors of the Daughters ofIsabella voted unanimously toadopt "support of Catholicfamily life" as their internationalcause and to recommend tothe society's 118,000 membersthe raising of $1 million for theCatholic university familystudies center.

On March 29, at a meeting inHartford, Conn., where thesociety has its headquarters,the US. and Canadian stateregents of the society ap-proved plans for fund raising.They set a goal of $2 permember per year in each stateunit of the Daughters ofIsabella until the entire en-dowment is raised.

Founded in 1897, theDaughters of Isabella has sup-ported efforts to meet thereligious, intellectual and socialneeds of the Catholic Churchand society at large. On inter-national, state and local levels,the society has funded aid toorphans , miss ionar ies ,refugees, religious com-munities and Catholiceducation.

Nearly 84 percent of the Swissvoters said "no" to the popular initiative for a new policyregarding foreigners," which would have eased restriction onseasonal workers from abroad and made it easier for foreignersto gain "foreign resident" status.

No exorcists, justhappy acolytes

There were no Exorcists ordained atthe Seminary of St. Vincent de PaulMay 6. And there were noDoorkeepers or Gravediggers either.

Yet eight Permanent Deacon can-didates, and another sixteenseminarians, entered the ministry ofAcolyte, one of the three minor ordersof the Church conferred on futurepriests — and a few chosen laymen.

But there once were other orders,called "pre-sacerdotal," which youngclerics took as necessary mini-stepstoward the major orders leading to thepriesthood. Prior to 1973, the ancientrites of Porter (doorkeeper) and Exor-cist were still observed, although theiractual function had been retired longago. Church history books even showevidence of an order of gravediggersin Africa.

TODAY, SEMINARIANS, like thosestudying rn Boynton Beach usuallybecome Lectors (readers) in the firstpart of their second year, followed byAcolyte later in the year. Bothministries involve assistance at Mass;the Acolyte also serves as a minister ofthe Eucharist.

While seminarians typically becomeDeacons in their third year, more andmore laymen - like the group at the

St. Vincent de Paul ceremony - arejoining their ranks as PermanentDeacons.

Bishop John J. Nevins, Chancellor ofthe Seminary, conferred the orders tothe mixed assembly of young and old,anglo and Spanish, lay and religious.

"Always be an optimist," he urgedthem in carrying out their duties."Remember those who are hurting. Bemost humble in the distribution of theEucharist. Let other people be remin-ded of the reverence due to Christ ourKing who you hold in the palm of yourhand. Love Cod's people immensely -especially the weak and sick who youwill go to frequently."

Women with message hit Tallahassee lobbiesTALLAHASSEE - "We represent

35,000 women in Florida," is themessage 47 members of the FloridaCouncil of Catholic Women broughtto legislators when the women cameto Tallahassee last week to lobbyduring the opening of the 1981Legislature, according to Marie Palmerof Miami, who organizes the annualtrip. The Florida Council of CatholicWomen has a statewide membershipdivided into diocesan councils.

Representatives from the FloridaCatholic Conference briefed thewomen lobbyists at a preliminarystrategy session before meeting withmembers of the legislature.

"Your presence is extremely impor-tant," Thomas A. Horkan, Jr., FloridaCatholic Conference executive direc-tor, told the women. "Sometimes youdon't realize how big a difference yourcontact makes to legislators -especially those who represent yourhome districts," Horkan said.

Rosemary Gallagher, associate forsocial services at the conference,

commented on key bills of potentialconcern to the Catholic women. Thebills range in subject areas from prisonreform to sex education.

Horkan also urged the women towork diligently at informing legislatorsof the catholic viewpoint on a con-stitutional convention limited to thepurpose of passing a Human LifeAmendment. "We're at the stage inthe pro-life movement where hugestrides were made on the nationallevel last year," Horkan said. "But weare still a long way from getting aHuman Life Amendment out of theUnited States Senate."

Gallagher told the women the ap-propriations bill is the most farreaching, and she said many socialprograms which the Florida CatholicConference views as vital are depen-dent on the outcome of the bill. She.gave examples of areas affected bychanges in funding: "Pre -natalprograms in hospitals are so terriblyimportant, and we would like to seemore money going towards these.

Another very important program iscommunity care for elderly to keepthem out of nursing homes. That

needs to be funded, and funded well,"Gallagher said. :

AUXILIARY BISHOP John J. Nevins,spoke on behalf of Archbishop EdwardA. McCarthy, who was unable to bepresent, thanking the Connecticutborn priest who came to South Floridain 1966 for his many years of serviceparticularly in the area of marriageproblems. All of the employeespresent also voiced their praise forMsgr. Fazzalaro and participated ingroup singing led by Sister Mary Tin-del, O.P.

Ordained March 17, 1945 at St.Joseph Cathedral, Hartford, Msgr. Faz-zalaro was graduated in 1949 fromCatholic University of America whichawarded him a Doctorate in CanonLaw. In 1956 he was elevated to therank of a papal chamberlain and threeyears later became a domestic prelatewith the title of Right Rev. Msgr.

For the first three years he was inMiami he served as an assistant pastorat Holy Family Church, North Miamiand in 1967 assumed duties as a fulltime member of the staff in theMatrimonial Tribunal. From 1967 to1969 he served as Vice-Officialis and in1969 was appointed Officialis. Coin-cident with that appointment hebecame pastor of Our Lady of theLakes parish and was for four years,spiritual director of the CatholicLawyers Guild.Since 1974 he has been in charge of St.Lawrence parish.

A good batting average isn't the onlything Chris Speier cares about.

Montreal Expos Shortstop Speier,during his first spring training session inWest Palm Beach, continued a per-sonal crusade that he feels called tolead. The Expos, which this yearmoved their pre-season headquartersfrom Daytona Beach to West Palm, is"home" for much of the year for theyoung ball player.

And as he travels around the coun-try, meeting new fans and otherplayers, Speier gets many oppor-tunities to talk about the pro-lifemovement to stop abortion, and hisfar-flung organization, "Athletes forLife".

HE SAYS THAT his objective is to usethe prestige of sports to get out thepro-life message. "An athlete meetsmany people in his travels and is in aprime position to influence manypeople through the media," he says."You have a responsibility to stand upfor what you believe in. I felt a respon-sibility to educate players and give aChristian witness to others."

Athletes for Life currently has 115

pro players signed up — many inbaseball like Chris. Some of the moreactive members are Joe Rudi of theBoston Red Sox, Sal Banda of theMilwaukee Brewers, Willie Stargell,Dave Parker, and Tim Foley of thePirates, and Steve Garvey of the L.A.Dodgers. Many of them go to schoolsand other groups to speak on pro-lifewhen they get the chance, And theyall work to get other players theycome in contact with to actively sup-port the cause. "A player has to beresponsible enough to get involved irrissues," he said, "and to me the humanlife issue is one of the utmost impor-tance. Once you lose respect for life,nothing else is important."

SPEIER ANSWERS the frequent "pro-choice" argument, "A lot of peoplesay, 'Don't impress your morals onme'. This isn't a moral issue, it's ahuman rights issue. We were once asmuch an embryo as we were ateenager. Making abortion legal doesn'tmake it right, because the unbornbaby has been stripped of its rights,just like the Blacks were stripped oftheir rights in 1857 when the U.S.Supreme Court made the Dred Scottdecision and decided Blacks were notpersons."

"When I was younger, I'd heardabout abortion and I knew of peoplewho'd had abortions. I didn't thinkthere was anything wrong with it. I wastotally unaware of the things that weregoing on, that a million babies a yearwere being killed. I was very im-mature.""I HAVENTT heard a good argument

for abortion. One of the things I had towrestle with in my mind was the en-dangering of the mother's health. I'vetalked to a lot of doctors and theyhave never run across an instancewhere you have to try to save both."

Two Catholic experts who testified inMiami were among qual i f iedspokesmen who agreed that ter-minally ill patients should have theright to die naturally by "pulling theplug" on extraordinary treatment. The.two men disagreed, however, on thevalue of a written agreement betweendoctor and patient.

It was a matter of life and death thatbrought together the series of doctors,lawyers, and clergymen, including twoprominent Catholic experts in down-town Miami last week.

A presidential commission studyingethical problems in medicine held,hearings at the federal building intothe life and death dilemma of AbePerlmutter, 73-Year-old retired taxicab driver from Lauderdale Lakes.

PERLMUTTER, DYING, f rom LouGerig's disease, told his physician thathe wanted his respirator turned offand, when his physician refused,petitioned the matter before theDistrict Court of Appeal. The courtruled in Perlmutter's favor in 1978 andhe died hours after his son Jerry pulledthe plug on his respirator.

HORKAN AS AN ATTORNEY, andrepresentative of the Catholic Chur-ch, has opposed bills in the Floridalegislature for over a decade thatwould seek to establish firm guidelinesand binding agreements when a dyingpatient requests terminat ion ofmedical care.

"There are some areas of life that arebetter left untouched by the gover-nment," he told the commission, "andthe treatment of dying patients is onesuch area."

"People are all different, they die dif-ferently, they look at death differently.Doctors themselves look at death dif-ferently, and have different relation-ships with their patients. When youset guidelines, you inevitably set downstereotypes for people to follow."

Horkan expressed opposition to theproposal before the legislature of alegally binding "living wil l ." The willwhich could.be signed by the patientat any point before or after an illnesswould state to the physician that "mylife shall not be artifically prolonged"in the event of an "incurable injury,disease, or illness certified to be aterminal condition . . ." The bill statesthat the physicians would not be liable

legally if they withdrew life sustainingproceedures in accordance with thedirective.

"THE LIVING WILL expresses generalthoughts (wi thout cit ing specificmedical circumstances)" he said "andcannot predict when and at what stageof life or illness will take place."

"People are dying every day.Lifesaving proceedures are undergonewhere a patient is put on a machine inorder to preserve life. In the vastmajority of cases if it doesn't workthey are taken off."

Horkan referred to A.M.A. -policywhich states "the application or with-drawal of extraordinary means shouldbe between the patient and doctor orthe family and the doctor."

"ALL THE legislation I've read sets upa legislative process by which a doctorcan and must withdraw a patient froma life saving device. !t rerriOyeS thefamily and the patient and puts thesole responsibility on the doctor. Itprojects the image that the physician ismaster of the patient."

"When people die it affects others. Ithas an even greater impact on familythan maybe the patient who wants tobe released from this life."

"The family," he added, "is usually agreater advocate for the dying personthan anyone else."

MSGR. WALSH, as the chairman ofthe Joint Conference Committee ofJackson Memorial Hospital in Miami,has recently been involved in amen-ding the hospital regulations to in-clude a written order in the case ofwithholding of life saving treatment.

the patient to refuse CPR or other lifesaving techniques if the patient is ter-manifly ill and his or her death is "im-minent."

Asked by commission staff directorMorgan Capron if such orders weren'tdesigned more for the benefit of at-tending physicians than for the patient,Walsh responded;

"In our society we have to be con-cerned about now our practitionersare being protected." But, he added,This doesn't mean the rights of thepatient are overlooked.

"IT'S A SITUATION where a happybalance is struck, he said.

"Dealing with human fraility," hecontinued, "we need this preciseness."

Several commission members,however, showed reservations abouthospital codes based on the Jacksonhospital model or blanket legislationthat would regulate the treatment ofdying patients.

Although the hospital order can berevoked at anytime by the patient or

legal guardian, Capron remarked "itcould lead to an automatic situationwhere something happens that is notin the interest of either the doctor or apatient."

During Horkan's* testimony Com-mission Chairman Morris Abramvolunteered, "the side effects tolegislation produce" results nc»t offsetby the gains, if you had legislation ofthe most advanced type the normalcustomary relation between familyand physicians will cease. ^

CAPRON BEFORE a recess on Fridaywent one step further, concluding thatperhaps insecurity on the part of doc-tors and staff was not necessarily a baathing "to the extent that it's asafeguard against precipitous action."

Commissioners also sajd that thecourts have never convicted a doctorof murder for his role in discontinuingmedical treatment for a terminally illpatient.

However, there is always the threatthat the physician could be called toaccount for any unreasonable ter-mination of medical care.

"It helps to maintain 'fear and trem-bling' in this situation" Capron said.

"Personal 'fear and trembling7 oughtnot to be codified."

Greatest victory in historyThe joy and excitement of a victory are in proportion to the

By the power of God what seemed to be a hopeless defeat wassuddenly turned into a glorious triumph. The powers of evil in helland on earth massed their full fury on the person of Christ andseemed successful in wiping goodness, love and hope from theface of the earth. In no battle were the stakes ever higher. Manwould have everlasting happiness or eternal grief; he would liveas a child of God or a slave of Satan; his mind would be opened tothe light of truth or forever closed in the darkness of error; hewould find the sure path to immortality or roam aimlessly in thevalley of death; he would discover the world of love or remainhelpless in the prison of hatred.

Since the life and death of all men were challenged, Christallowed his enemies to take his life and make Him a captive ofdeath. And when his last breath left his body, his enemies had

During Lent and Passover, Christiansand Jews are asked to abstain fromcertain indulgences. Both groups arecounseled to express concern for thefreedom and well-being of allhumanity.Today, rather than chocolates or

bread, I must ask myself to give upnumbness.

It is said that a great lie kept Hitler inpower; that the enormity of the crimehad a "numbing" effect on the Germanpeople as welfas others who "heardbut could not believe."

Today, numbing and fantasies ofpersonal survival are common respon-ses to the threat of nuclear war.

Recently, Henry D. Abraham, M.D.,psychiatrist at Harvard and Dir. ofPhysicians For Social Responsibility,said that it is a "delusion" to believe

that medical survival is possible after anuclear conflagration." He citedstatistics and findings at Hiroshima andDresden: burning flesh, suffocation.Civil defense became a myth, a Dan-te's inferno here on earth.

Well then, how about just using afew small nukes?

Retired U.S. Admiral John MarshallLee has assessed limited nuclear attackin a "tell-it-like-it-is-way." He says, "Inthe heat of battle the temptation touse them (additional nukes) would beirresistible."

Psychiatrists are joined by scientists,economists, retired army officers — allurging President Reagan to ratify Salt II;;to defuse the reign of terror; to followWest German's Tead to cut back ondeveloping arms for the future. They

agree that we must not succumb toAuschwitz fever!

good family go wrong?Of the hours of broadcasts I heard

March 30, the day of the assassinationattempt on President Reagan, onecomment lingered with me. Talkingabout John Hinckley, the young manwho allegedly fired the shots, onecommentator said, in a tone of almostwonder, "he came from a goodfamily."

If Hinckley had come from a single-parent family, the comment would .nave been, "he came from a brokenfamily." Furthermore, I would bet thecommentator's tone would not haveheld wonder or disbelief, but wouldhave been definite, punctuated.

Having raised six children alone, I'vehad the opportunity to note this andthink about it. I am someone who hasbeen subtly, and occasionally overtly,blamed for the behavior of mychildren in a way that parents in a two-parent setting are not.

When my children misbehaved ordid poor work (which happenedrarely), teachers invariably would say,'They're having a problem becausethey are children who'do not have afather in the house." When thechildren did very well, as they oftendid, some teachers would go so far asto comment, "How nice it is that theyare overcompensating for not having afather in the house!"

I don't believe I ever heard anyoneremark that a child was having a

problem because he or she was theproduct of a two-parent family, regard-less of the disorder that does exist inmany such homes. Such criticismwould upset the image of stabilitywe like to ascribe to families by virtueof their structures.

Thafs why there could be suchshock in a newscaster's voice, tellingof a troubled young man from abackground of proper structure.

A priest who was a jail chaplaintold me that again and againparents would come to him af-ter their son had been arrested,asking lather, where did we gowrong?" I think the rightquestion is, "where did he gowrong}"

Isn't it interesting how no onequestions why a search into the familybackground is the first thing that hap-pens when a young person gets intotrouble? Obviously, the explanation isthat we expect to find an answer forthe deviant behavior by looking at theparents and family. Long have webeen informed that the way the twig isbent, the tree will grow. If s so easy toblame the parents for the poor

toward parents has in some way beena sin against them. We have put parentsin the position where they are to *blame not only for how their childrenturn out, but for the mistakes and badacts done by their children along theway to adulthood. Parents are expec-ted to be ultimately responsible forthe actions of others.

This is a terrible thing to do becauseit puts the children in control of theparents. There was a time when animpossible child turned adult was sim-ply called a "black sheep." Now theyare called a parental failure.

A priest who was a jail chaplain told 'me that again and again parents would 'come to nim after their son had beenarrested, asking, "father, where did wego wrong?" I think the right question is,"Where did he go wrong?"

In recent years social scientists havebegun to research the genetic factors,the peer pressures, the influence ofmedia and world and social environ-ments, all of which coalesce to affectthe bending of the twig and makeparenting an imprecise vocation.

Thafs part of the reason why paren-ting comes with no guarantees. Addfree will and individual choice and it isnot too hard to find some answers tothe questions of how a kid from a"good family" can go wrong.

column I wrote about homilies. WhatI said was that it was my observationthat homilies were getting better.There were readers who didn't agreewith that at all.

I realized when I wrote that columnthat although I get around a lot, hearmany different homilists, I couldn'tgeneralize from my own experiences.So I wasn't surprised that somepeople's experiences were differentthan my own. But there were somepoints raised, beyond just variations inquality, that might be worthexamining.

Some say they get confusingtheology. As a matter of fact, the weekafter that column appeared I was at aMass where the homilist offered atheology fairly far removed fromCatholic theology. I don't think he setout to do it. I think it came in part froman effort to apply a basically spiritualGospel passage to social action. In theprocess of doing it, he made a coupleof statements about Christ that don'thave basis in Catholic theology.

I looked around a couple OT times atpoints where he diverged most com-pletely and it was obvious he had losthis listening audience. It wasn't likelyhe was doing any harm with his shakytheology and even though his ap-plication of the Scripture to socialissues wasn't really apt, if anything gotthrough it was probably that Catholicsshould be concerned for socialjustice. That could do some good.

But surely homilists should preachwhat is theologically sound. There's

really very little reason to go into ob-scure theological points, no need for ahomily to leave people in confusion.And, of course, it is necessary forhomilies to present Catholic teaching.I heard of a monsignor who said, notentirely facetiously, "I never preach ondoctrine any more, too controversial."To preach what the Church teachesshould not be controversial. But if it is,no surprise, for it was when JesusChrist first delivered it,

But he doesn't believe that wouldhappen. He ended his letter, "I think

There were some letters that startedout talking about the homilies but en-ded up talking about the people atMass. Their concern was that peoplewho would never think of going to asocial affair without some dressing upcome to Mass dressed as if they'regoing out to work in the garden. It wasnot a complaint at all against thosewho might not have better clothes butthose who have better clothes butdon't think the occasion warrantsthem.

There were letters that disagreedwith me when I said I thought homilieswere getting better but there were afew that agreed with me, too. I think itmore likely those who disagreedwould write and that those who didn'twrite probably were in someagreement.

I do believe homilies are better buthow you judge this concerns expec-tations. If you expect every Sunday afinely polished gem of a homily, youare probably usually going to bedisappointed. But if what you expectfrom a good homily is signs ofpreparation and thought, an effort onthe part of the homilist to findsomething that is good and true thathe can offer you, then if you listenyou'll gain something worthwhile. Andit is because I see these signs of study,preparation, thought and effort on thepart of homilists, that I say I believehomilies are getting better.

Q. I am 17 years old and my parentsembarrass me. When I bring my friendshome, my dad is often grumpy and

'doesn't say much. My mother is justthe opposite, always fussing at me.She worries about my driving and tells'me not to drink alcohol. She worriesabout everything right in front of myfriends. Can you tell me what to do?

A. First, let me tell you a couple ofstories. Jerry is a young man who servedhis country heroically in Korea.When his term of enlistment was up,he wrote to his parents in Maine thathe planned to marry Anne, a Catholicfrom Oregon.

His parents were alarmed. Theyhired a private detective to investigatethe girl to see whether she was worthyof their son.

Despite the insulting behavior of hisparents, Jerry and Anne married. Theyare now the happy parents of threechildren - whom they try not to worryabout excessively.

Roger was a high school student Iknew in 1940. His mother also fussedand worried - publicly - not only about .Roger but also about his threebrothers:

"Have you got your galoshes on? Doyou get enough to eat in the schoolcafeteria? Are you catching a cold? Doyou think you should date Mary Lou?I've heard..."

Fortunately Roger was a relaxed guyand his mother'sloud worrying did notbother him very much. He wouldlaugh about her endless questions.Even more important, his friendslaughed with him, not at him.

We liked Roger for what he was andwe didn't much care whether hisparents were perfect or whether theywere subject to the same humanfoibles as other parents.

In high school, I knew my motherwas well-read, more so than manypeople. I also was convinced she washopelessly old-fashioned, I used allsorts of stratagems to hide this terriblefamily secret from my friends.

I found out, some years later andmuch to my surprise, that my friendswere very interested in my mother'svast fund of knowledge. They didn'tpay any attention to what I consideredher old-fashioned qualities.

The Lord urges us to honor ourparents. That doesn't mean you haveto be blind to their faults. But youmight keep in mind two points:

1. If your friends are worth having,they will judge you by what you areand will not blame you for the short-corn ingsl of your parents.

2. One of the main reasons wehonor our parents is for the gift of lifethey gave us. Only the combination ofyour father and your mother couldhave produced the person that will beforever and uniquely you.

Yes, they have flaws, perhaps seriousones. But they had the love andcourage to cooperate with God increating you.

J. WalshEaster - to live and die with hope

With or without faith, everyone lives by the an-cient, threadbare saying, "While there is life, thereis hope."

As the few remaining minutes of life tick offrapidly, the condemned convict listens painfully forthe steps which will bring the news of pardon. Thepatient whom everyone knows is doomed to diekeeps expecting the doctor to find a newmedication, a different treatment, even as he slipsinto a coma. The trapped miner gasping for breathstrains all his resources to hear the signs of ap-proaching help.

No matter what the odds, one keeps hoping. Thistendency, stubborn and bulldoggisn. is built intoour nature. Ifs part of our being. If God had notingrained this powerful inclination in the soul, manwould not be able to face even the ordinarychallenges and adversities of life. Courage wouldbe overwhelmed by cowardice. Fear would killinitiative. Without the firm hope of succeeding, noone would venture anything which promised op-position.

All this is true. But there is more. There is also ahigher kind of hope.

Here is another prisoner condemned to death -this one for the crime of believing in Christ. Heawaits the moment of execution with firm con-fidence. He is not looking for a reprieve. Histhoughts are not centered on the 11tn hour par-don. He is waiting now to embrace death as thegateway to eternal life. He yearns for union withGod. His hopes are pinned on the divine promise ofeternity.

A sick woman knows she has a malignant diseaseand awaits the end. Far from despair, she shows byher attitude and last words she is full of hope. She isfilled with the conviction that in a short while shewill live with an everlasting life. This world will be

replaced by another; Sorrow will give way to joy.Pain will be forgotten in perfect peace.

Unfortunately this kind of hope is not the heritageof everyone. It does not come as part of our naturalequipment. No one gives it to himself. And yetwithout it, no one can have a truly meaningful lifeor know genuine peace or fulfill the destinity forwhich one has been created.

This is the hope, the unique hope, which came in-to the world on Easter Sunday. When Jesus severedthe bonds of death and walked out of his tomb, he

filled the atmosphere with the light and warmth ofhope, even in the most miserable of conditions.

He conquered the one obstacle - death. Deathhad always seemed to put an end to hope. What hedid and said thereafter changed completely notonly the course of civilization, but the thinking andvalued and attitudes of men and womeneverywhere and for all times.

An enormous amount of time and effort has beenused for centuries by brainy men who sought to killoff that hope, once and for all. They have con-

sistently refused to accept as fact the resurrectionof Jesus. It still goes on, of course, although allhistory records that no one has come close todisproving the joyous teaching of the apostles thatJesus rose from the dead and sits at the right handof the Father.

The most ingenious - and boring - explanations tocontradict the resurrection still appear regularly,get some readers who are looking for the novel andsensational, and then disappear. There is a constantrehash of old theories that an earthquakeswallowed his body or the body was revived beforedeath and the sly apostles managed to slip by theRomans with the body in their keeping.

"I am the resurrection and the life; he whobelieves in me even if he dies shall live."

The empty tomb caused these words to beechoed across the world, and hope was born in thehearts of people, like a breath from heaven.

The poor heard them, and lost their bitternessand worked patiently towards their inheritance inthe next world. Those with sick hearts or deseasedbodies learned the lessons of the cross and usedtheir handicaps as means of eternal life insurance.The bereaved stood at the grave of a loved one,and even though the heart was heavy with the sad-ness of separation, they were at peace, becausethey knew there was no annihilation. Those op-pressed by dictators felt their burden lighten by thehope of justice in God's kingdom. The persecutedfound themselves willing to bide their time andawait the love that never Tails.

This, then, is the foundation of our hope. Easternsmessage gives us final assurance that Christ surely isthe Son of God. His resurrection sets the divine sealon all his teachings, on all his promises and claims.We can, therefore, iive and die with hope.

Murder is still an avocation with many people. Allwe need as proof of this is an examining of FBIstatistics on handgun murders. In 1979 there were9,848 handgun murders in the United States. Thatsame year Sweden put us to shame with a record ofonly 21 handgun murders. Japan had 48; Canada,52; Britain, 55; France, 800. The United Stated ledthe pack.

What is it in the American bloodstream thatcauses such incredible slaughter? The usual flip ex-planation is that we kill in self-defense. Probablyabortion is the leading cause of murder in Americabut the handgun is piling up quite a phenomenalrecord.The strange fact is that Americans in general don't

want any form of handgun controls. Their ex-planation is that they need to defend themselves.Apparently voters become fearful because of theincredible number of murders in America.

The main obstacle to anti-gun laws is the NationalRifle Association. A lobbying association that hasimmense power and money, the NRA contributedmore than $2 million last year to political cam-paigns against gun controls.

Senator Ted Kennedy, painfully aware of theassassination of his two brothers, has been backinga modest bill in Congress to ban handguns.However, he has little or no chance of success. Lastyear for instance, in the presidential primaries, hemet with vigorous opposition from foes of gun con-trols who distributed stickers labeled, "If Kennedywins, you lose!"

Yet Kennedy was asking only for aiban of hand-guns, not on hunting rifles, long guns or sportingpistols.

Why this concerted opposition to a ban of hand-guns? It is not that American voters and lawmakershave a deliberate desire to commit murder; rather,they feel that ordinary citizens ought to have ahandgun ready at all times. Even many of the agedin tenements want a handgun.

In reality, the purchasing of handguns is like thearms race in miniature. Despite the intention, theweapons increase and proliferate and the at-mosphere of violence spreads like a cloud over bigcities.

If voters wanted a ban of handguns they couldsimply vote handguns out of existence. But atpresent the majority of American voters don'twant any such ban, and that is the real problem.

Congressman Jim Wright (D-Texas), majorityleader of the House, has remarked: "Every memberof Congress tells the same story. There are hun-dreds of people, in some cases, literally thousands,who never write to them on any such subject (thatis handguns) but become irate and paranoid and veryfrightened at any suggestion of gun control."

One point that puzzles me is that many Americanvoters deplore the collapse of national character,the sickness "of society and the malaise so cons-picuously evident in our national murder rate. Someturn to sociologists or 'psychologists for a cure.Why don't they look to moral theology?

Dealing with doctors and drugsDear Dr. Kenny: I read your article orr the overly

active 20-month-old baby. We have an 11-year-oldson who has been diagnosed as hyperactive. We'vehad him every place in Kentucky and Indiana thatyou can imagine. We even took him to a clinic inFlorida. He has been on Ritalin, Cylert, tranquilizersof all sorts and several diets. Now he is onDesecrine which seems to help a little. We haven'thad the success we would have liked and are veryconfused. Please help. (Kentucky)

A. We wrote a column recently on the 4-D ap-proach to hyperactivity in children, suggesting thatparents consider discipline, diet and drugs for thechild and diversion for mother. To answer yourquestion, however, I would like to focus on twoadditional points: 1) How to use professional help,and 2) how to use drugs.

Unfortunately parents and families have given toomuch of their decision-making power to physicians.Remember, professionals are experts in a particulararea. We need the knowledge of experts to help uswith specific problems. However, no profession isconcerned with the whole person the way thefamily is.

IN MEDICINE, parents should question theirphysician about any radical procedure. A radicalprocedure is any intervention that interferes with

EASTER IS hope. It is God's reminder that He iswaiting for us, that the darkness of lent likethe darkness of life is temporary, and thatthe meaning of our existence lies in theI resurrection of His son. It is hope for thefamily as well, a renewal of promise, a newbeginning of living out His Word together,

EASTER| IS fun. It is decorated eggs, hunts, baskets,vacation, ham, lilies, patent leather shoes,i proud little boys in uncomfortable ties,

chemical or bodily integrity or with family livingarrangements. In other words, parents shouldquestion drugs, surgery or hospitalization.

Ask two simple questions. First, "What will hap-pen if we do what you recommend?" You need toknow all the side effects and after-effects. You needto know the recovery odds so you can judgewhether the treatment is worth the pain and ex-pense.

Second, ask, "What will happen if we don't dowhat you recommedr You want to know alter-native treatments and the odds for recoverywithout medical intervention.

TAKE THE ANSWERS home and consult yourspouse and family about what to do. If need be,consult another pnysician.

In your case, recognize that physicians can onlygive medical advice and knowledge. To find non-medical treatments you need non-medical expertssuch as educators, psychologists or nutritionists.Then you as parents make the decision.

Some of the confusion stems from differing expertopinions. You can resolve this if you realize thatyou and not the doctors have the final say.

SINCE MANY DRUGS have been recommendedto you for your son, I want to add some suggestionson how teruse drugs. All drugs change the body'schemical balance and may well have unintended

Parents need to insist on their responsibilities andrights. Use the knowledge and skills of physicians.Then use your head.

EASTERReadings: Acts 10:34, 37-43; Colossians 3:1-4; John 20:1-9

Easter is the greatest of feasts. No other is prepar-ed for by so much fasting and prayer; no other is sowidely celebrated. It is the greatest feast because itrecalls and relives Jesus' great victory over sin anddeath. It is the world rising from its asnes.

Jesus' resurrection was not a mere return to Hisformer way of life, although Magdalen seems tohave thought so. He rose to another existenceunhampered by the restriction of earthly space andtime.

NO ONE SAW Jesus awaken, or depart from thetomb. No one would even have imagined such athing. Not the apostles, fearful for their lives, theirminds a cauldron of conflicting emotions. Whatchanged them into lions, then? The sight of theRisen Lord.

Peter proclaimed this stirring news to Corneliusand his household. He made it plain that many hadseen Jesus alive again. Paul in turn would see Him,and fearlessly, tiressly speak of the resurrection. Infact, he told the Corinthians, "If Christ be not risenfrom dead, your faith is worthless... if our hopes inChrist are limited to this life only, we are the most

pitiable of men" (1 Cor 15).Jesus died, and rose from the tomb. These are the

facts. But what do they mean?Easter and its joy must be seen against the somber

backdrop of Calvary. There, for a few dreadfulhours, it had appeared that the powers of darknesshad at last overcome the light and won a victoryover Goodness. Actually it was not that way at all,for in dying, Jesus was offering on our behalf an actof love of such staggering proportions that itforever outweighs and offsets the malice of sin.

So, although the words are paradoxical, wecorrectly speak of Jesus' death as a victory. Cod'sloving plan for our salvation involved the mysteryof life through death.

THE BELIEVER is not simply a spectator at a cosmicstruggle, for this is his struggle too. If he unitedwith Christ in that supreme act of love andobedience, it is his victory too.

And united he is, not with some dead hero of thepast, but with the living God whose life he nowshares. This union is brought about by baptismwhere, as St. Paul reminds us (Romans 6:3-5), wedied and rose with Christ. In the language of sym-

bol, immersion in the baptismal waters was a signof death and burial with Christ, and emergencefrom those waters was a new life of the spirit, lifewith Christ.

Neither the sacrifice on Calvary nor the baptismwhich incorporates us .into Christ, dispense us fromdying, or from the need of penance. We are remin-ded that we should be as great as we really are, andshould five up to the glorious reality of our life-hid-den with God.

Our lives must bear witness to our victory throughgrace over our sinful selves. Is this possible? Yes,yes, and yes. Easter assures us that sin can no longerhold us its slaves; we are not the helpless victims ofour impulses and desires, but a new creation, forwe have risen from the tomb of our sins.

LIFE IS THE MESSAGE of Easter, a new life, ashare in god's own life, and a pledge of future glory.Is it any wonder that the whole Church resoundstoday with joyful alleluias?

The renewal of our baptismal promises today isa good way for us to bear witness to our belief inJesus' life, death, and resurrection. Alleluia, that is,"Praise the Lord!"

Priest says addicts suffer,not bad peopleBy George Kemon

So states Fr. Sean P. O'Sullivan, newlyappointed Director of the Division ofCriminal Justice and Substance Abusefor the Catholic Service Bureau.

"Jesus had a great deal to say aboutpeople who are suffering," said Fr.O'Sullivan, "Thafs a little of my ownphilosophy regarding the social aspec-ts of abuse and addiction."

When Fr. O'Sullivan came to the Ar-chdiocese in 1964 he began to workwith young people and then Arch-bishop Coleman Carroll asked him inthe late 60s to get involved in runningrehabilitation programs for teenagerswho were addicted to drugs andalcohol. •*'

The Archbishop further suggestedthat Fr. O'Sullivan return to school and

Father Sean P. O'Sullivan, who recen-tly received a Doctorate Degree inSocial Work from Columbia University,has been named Director of theDivision of Criminal Justice and Sub-stance abuse for Catholic ServiceBureau.

As division director he will headthree programs: St. Luke's Center, adrug detoxification center; OzanamResidence, a program of rehabilitationfor ex-offenders and Bethesda Manor aresidential alcoholic treatmentprogram.

Father O'Sullivan has had extensiveexperience in the criminal justice-substance abuse field. Employed bythe City Council he served as legal andfiscal analyst for the criminal justiceprograms in New York City. From1969 to 1971 he was executive direc-tor of Operation Self-Help in Hialeah.This program offered counseling,

\ rehabilitation and day care to teenagedrug abusers. During this time he wasa|so chairman of the Board of Direc-tors of Concept House, a residentialtherapeutic program for teenage drugabusers.

Appropriately, his dissertation atColumbia was titled A SocioculturalAnalysis of Family and Friendship In-fluences on Teenage Deviance. He hastaught at Fordham University and theCollege of New Rochelle in New York.While a student at Columbia Univer-sity he served as a member of the Ad-visory Council in the School of SocialWork.

Father O'Sullivan has received manycommunity honors and awards; Padreof the Year Award, Archdiocese ofMiami in 1969; Outstanding Citizen ofDade County, B'Nai B'Rith, 1969; Ser-vice to Mankind Award, Sertoma In-ternational, 1970; One of the FiveOutstanding Young Men of Florida,1970; One of the Outstanding YoungMen of America, 1970 and 1971. He isprobably best remembered by hisCatholic Parishioners as the kind,loving Associate Pastor of St. John'sthe Apostle in Hialeah and St. Rose ofLima in Miami Shores and Our Lady ofthe Holy Rosary Parish in Perrine.

St. Luke's Methadone Center was thethird drug program sponsored by theArchdiocese and was headed by thelate Dr. Ben Sheppard.

Fr. O'Sullivan said he had doubtsabout methadone which replacesheroin without the drugging effectsbut keeps the subject dependent on it,though allowing to lead a useful lifeand receive counseling.

St. Luke's has a very useful program,according to the priest. "It has a veryeffective drug-free component, andthey are very much into prevention —it is really a multi-faceted, program. I amvery impressed with the work of thedirector at St. Luke's MartinGreen."

"In fact, I'm helping him to write agrant request at present to implementa prevention program in our schools."Fr. O'Sullivan spoke of the six ser-

vices St. Luke's offers the recoveringaddict. The S.N.O.W. (Special Needsof Women) project at St. Luke's is acounseling service offered to womenwith drug problems. Professionalcounseling is available along with aday care center and medical services.The service focuses on the specialproblems of women. Valium,quaaludes, amphetamenes, cocaineand opiates are some of the drugsused by women in an attempt to copewith their daily pressures andfrustrations, and may be indicative ofunderlying problems. Fr. also spoke of Project Intercept (af-ter care). He said Project Intercept isan outpatient, drug-free counselingprogram which offers services to clien-ts who have successfully detoxifiedfrom methadone and also to men andwomen who have had drug problemsin the past and present. The goals ofthis program offer therapy in order toprevent the client from returning todysfunctional drug abuse. Steve Kurtzsupervises this aspect of the total pic-ture at St. Luke's.

The new Director also mentionedthe Center's Adolescent Servicesprogram — the outpatient drug-freemodality which provides counselingservices for adolescents and theirfamilies. Many students are introducedto drugs that can cause problems inthe areas of peer relationships, schoolwork, and family interactions. Fr.O'Sullivan considers the adolescentperiod a crucial one in terms ofdeveloping a basic sense of personalidentity and future direction. Drugabuse can interfere with this normaldevelopmental process, a well asgenerate increased family stress. TomBarr heads up this program at St.Luke's.

Also offered are programs indetoxification - a 21 day detox fromopiates, heroin, dilaudid and percodanon an outpatient basis. Dr. Galan is incharge of Detox.

Then, according to Fr. O'Sullivanthere is Methodone maintenance of-fered daily from 7:30 to 6:00 p.m., andMethadone services covering theprograms, services, and counseling ofail who are under its treatmentmodality. Hugh Clear is in charge ofthis part o( the total program at St.Luke's Center.

"At Bethesda," says Fr. O'Sullivan, ."our goal js to continue to provide areality based program of substanceand quality, meeting the needs of theresident to the degree that they willfunction well and maintain on-goingabstanance^ f rom alcohol and otherdrugs:". According to Ann Wilson, residentdirector at Bethesda Manor, "Ourresidents come to us by referral fromthe private sector of hospital basedaddiction programs, from the Stateand county intermediate careprograms (i.e., Avon Park, Dade Coun-ty Comprehensive Alcohol program)physicians, clergy, social agencies, andacohofics anonymous."

The program at Bethesda, says Fr.O'Sultivan, is based upon recoveryfrom alcohol through the A.A<program and the client is intensivelyexposed to the AA program during hisstay at the Manor.

The new Director is deeply involvedwith the concept of family discipline.He said, "Discipline in the family cutsthe chances of drug jaddictioni in half."

"People are confused aboutdiscipline," Fr. O'Sullivah said. "Whenkids resist, parents tend to back down.They run scared all the time."

He also found a close link betweendrug addiction and other forms of

behavior - fighting, skipping school,drinking and driving without a licensefor instance.

"The old adage that you are knownby the company you keep is proven tobe right again. If your friends usedrug s,= there is an overwhelmingpossibility that you will use them," saidFr. O'Sullivan.

His new position encompassesleadership over St. Luke's, OzananHouse, a half-way house for offenders,and Bethesda Manor, a half-way housefor recovering alcoholics.

The Irish-born priest has always beenassociated with young people in hisministry.He recently received his Decorate

degree from Columbia University. Hisdissertation was a study of 285 familiesin the Bedford-Stuyvesant Section ofBrooklyn. Father feels the results ofthe study are as valid for Miami as theyare for New York or any other largecity.

The priest feels that money is not theanswer in helping people. At least, nottotally. You have to have money toimplement programs. But there mustbe change in the family structure — theresponsibility of parents, the dutiesand discipline of children — all arecomponents which work towardkeeping the young person away fromdrugs.

Fr. O'Sullivan's efforts will be aimedin this direction.

Billy Graham seeslittle hope of unity

Billy Graham America/s most notedProtestant evangelist, says he holds lit-tle hope for Christian unity.

In his first appearance in SouthFlorida since 1961, Rev. Graham toldreporters gathered for a press con-ference preceding his EvangelisticRally held in Boca Raton on Paim Sun-day, "I don't believe there's going tobe a visible, structured unity betweenthe various denominations, in fact, I'mnot even sure it wouicl be healthy. The

. divisions are too deep too historical,too traditional, '-Tit I think there aresreas where we can ail work togetherfor the common good of ail mankind .. . . for peace,-tor example."

Rev. Graham, who has spent very lit- ,tie time in this country since last Sep-tember, was asked to comment on therenewed interest in Evangelization inthe Catholic community.

"I THINK THAT especially theCharismatic Renewal which, for exam-ple, is taking place at the currentmoment in southern Poland in theCatholic Church is very encouraging,"he responded. "By charismatic, I don'tmean 'speaking in tongues' which somany of us think of as charismatic, butthe people in Poland are studying theBible. They're talking about renewal,personal relationship with Christ."

About the Moral Majority, Grahamsaid, "I don't have any position exceptthat I am for most of the moral prin-ciples that they stand for, and I thinkthere's a great misunderstandingabout what the. Moral Majority is,especially in Europe. They think theMM is a white, protestant organizationwhen actually the MM is made up ofCatholics, Protestants, and Jews,people of all stripes against this per-missive society that we have, allowedto develop. .

"ON THE EXTREME right, however,

there have been some right-wingpeople, in my judgment, who have noreligious interest who would iike tomanipulate the evangeiitals into somesort of political force, and this is what Ihave objected to, and i believe thatDr. Falweii would object to it, too.

". . . My difference primarily with theMoral.Majority is just that! don't want•to get involved in politics. I agree withmost of then moral principles:however, ! did not tee! it was my roleto get involved with the Panama CanaiTreaty or our defense posture, i feitthat was diluting the Gospei-and takingaway, from the Gospel, and that wasreally the only difference that i mighthave had."

Graham viewed the launching of"Columbia" earlier that day as "either agreat force of peace and scientificprogress or as a gigantic militaryweapon, and I suspect both motivesare back of this tremendous scientificachievement. "Columbia" has the .capacity to use the laser beam and anew beam they're developoing out inLos Alamos to stop all in-c©mihgmissiles, which means it could be agigantic weapon in the future. In fact,the next war may well be fought inouter space."

Asked whether the recentassassination attempt was an isolatedincident or just another symptom ofour sick society, Graham stated, "Idon't think it was an isolated incidentwhen you have 22 young peopledisappearing in Atlanta and an averageof several homicides a day in NewYork City. Violence is throughout thecountry, and if s not the gun, in myjudgment. I'm against the SaturdayNight Special, but I think they ought tobe sold; but, at the same time> whenCain killed his brother Abel, the firstmurder in history, he didn't have aSaturday Night Special.

"Let us be clear on U.S. aid," he said."It is not grants but loans that we mustrepay. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (NC) - Resear-chers at Nashville's Hubbard Hospital,and Meharry Medical College aretesting a "do-it-yourself abortion drugfor use by women up to five weekspregnant.

The drug could make abortion thelow-cost, at-home, non-surgicalprocedure abortion advocates dreamof and could make abortion clinicsnecessary only for second and thirdtrimester abortions.THE UPJOHN Pharmaceutical com-pany of Kalamazoo, Mich., which isfunding the research, is to be the solemanufacturer of the drug, called the15-methyl protaglandin F2 Methylester suppository.

In Washington, Father Edward M:Bryce, director of the U.S. bishop'sCommittee on Pro-life Activities,commented, "it is difficult to find anyredeeming feature in this sort ofresearch or product."

In an interview with The TennesseeRegister, Nashville Diocesannewspaper, Joe Heywood, Upjohnpublic relations director, said theresearch is now being done in several

locations across the nation besidesNashville.

He said the first phase of the testingprocess, already completed, involvesadministering the drug to "normal"people, those not having the diseaseor condition a drug is meant to treat."Researchers monitor its effects . onthem.

THE CURRENT second phase,Heywood said, involves testing thedrug on about 150 to 200 pregnantwomen. The third phase will involvenationwide testing on 500 to 2,500women.

Finally, he said, the company will,present its findings to the federal Foodand Drug Administration (FDA) for ap-proval or disapproval for marketing.He said researchers now hope thedrug will be ready for marketing withinthree years.

Dr. Henry Foster, chairman of the'department of obstetrics andgynecology at Meharcy MedicalCollege, who heads the researchers inNashville, said that when the drug hasbeen approved, a woman could ob-tain it with a prescription from herdoctor and administer it to herself.

Reports say the entire proceduretakes about seven.hours.

Heywood said Upjohn has deter-mined that the drug can be used"safely"'up to the 49th day past awoman's last menstrual period, orwhen the baby is about 63 days old.Use of the drug after that time wouldprobably result in an incomplete abor-tion, requiring completion by surgeryor suction, he said.

HEYWOOD disagreed with Foster'sclaim that women could administerthe drug to themselves at home. Hepredicted that the FDA would

Stragglingfor unity

fayette, La., find that working together is not alwayseasy but can be rewarding. The parish, 50 mileswest of Baton Rouge, was the first interracial parishestablished in the Diocese of Lafayette.

Building a cohesive spirit at Our Lady Queen ofPeace is no simple task. In the. first place, there are14 neighborhoods within the parish. Moreover,Sunday liturgies are celebrated at two differentsites. Some 95 percent of the 900 parish families areblack and attend Mass at the main church. Whiteparishioners, living in new developments borderingthe parish, generally attend Mass in a chapel in oneof the neighborhoods.

According to the pastor, Father Daniel Regan, oneof the parish's six stated goals is unity: 'That ourcommunity become as one family whose unity andactivity are not limited by racial or geographicdivisions." Emphasizing that there is only one parishat Our Lady Queen of Peace, he stated thatparishioners feel "uneasy sometimes" but areslowly learning to listen to each other.

PARISH COUNCIL member Stanley Arceneauxsees a new pride developing among parishioners."I've learned a lot and I've changed, too," he reflec-ts. By "dealing with other people's problems, I'vedeveloped a sensitivity I did not have before."

Mary Davis credits the activities surrounding theparish's 10th anniversary in 1979 for a closeness shethinks is beginning to grow among parishioners."Before that time, people stayed apart. Now, afterSunday Mass, you can see the difference. Ifs like afamily gathering."

faced in 1978 at meetings between former pastorFather Val Pullman and his newly appointed co-pastor, Father Regan. Both priests recognized theneed for developing a good working relationshipand for focusing on the future direction of theparish.

With the aid of a consultant from the ParishRenewal Office in the diocese of Lafayette, thepriests met each week for six months and then setout to get parishioners from all the neighborhoodsinvolved in reviewing the parish's history and char-ring its future.

FATHER REGAN says this involved "coming togrips" with the fact that the majority of adults areholding #e|ytttfwo> or three or even four jobs. Thismeant thatHfiriding a convenient time for people tomeet together posed a special challenge. But whenpeople began to work together, often at incon-venient times, they developed a new appreciationfor each other, he suggests.

A parish convention took the list of suggestionscompiled at the neighborhood meetings and usedthem to develop recommendations for the parishcouncil which, in turn, developed parish goals.

We wish vyfe could do a "lot of things overnightbut it is going to be a long process," says Ar-ceneaux. According to Father Regan, there arealready some tangible results. More people are in-volved in the parish, parish income has increasedand a part-time' sister now works with parishreligious-education programs."There's a sense of trying to do the best thing for

the whole parish, not just for one segment," Ar-ceneaux says. "We argue with each other a lot butwhen a meeting ends, we shake hands and go awaysmiling.' •

What happens when people collaborate? Manycorporations, schools, hospitals and other in-stitutions of society want an answer to thatquestion. -

To find the answer, school administrators consultparents, hoping the result will be an increasedability of parents and teachers to serve together inthe education of children. Some corportions initiateprocedures to promote greater undestanding andgreater teamwork among employees.

FAMILIES are concerned about collaboration too.Our complex society places special demands onthe time, the energy and the relationships of familymembers - influencing the family's lifestyle for bet-ter or worse. Family members often find that if theyare going to spend time together, if they are going

It isn't surprising that at a time when many ofsociety's institutions have collaboration on theirminds, people in parishes also are exploring waysto share in the work of being a parish.

When parishioners of St. Joseph the WorkerParish in Marrero, La., gather for their annual parishassembly, they find they are able to work closelytogether in setting goals for the coming year. Infact, in the atmosphere of trust that exist, the pastorand the staff do not feel they must vote in theassembly's proceedings.

This year parishioners at St. Joseph the Workerapproved goals calling for more parish efforts to aidthe positive growth of family life, and for more op-portunities to be educated about local and globalinjustice and to carry out action that promotesjustice. In the past, parishioners have: agreed topromote greater youth involvement in the parishand to foster opportunities for spiritual growth.

THAT SITUATION, in which parishioners play therole they do in formulating parish goals, cameabout after several years of growing participation

by parishioners in the work of the parish. They wereyears of reflection and collaboration.

St. Joseph's experience is a strong example of agrowing phenomenon - the sharing of the parishcommunity in the leadership of the parish, in thework of being a parish.

What are the advantages of this kind of sharing?First, when people share in the development of anyinstitution's goals, they tend to feel more respon-sible for carrying out the goals. They may develop agreater sense of the urgency of the goals, as well.

In addition, when the people of a parishcollaborate, they tend to understand better whatthe parish's goals are. This understanding can leadto a better use of the particular talents of each per-son in the parish - a second advantage of this kindof sharing.

SOMETIMES the movement toward increasedcollaboration in a parish takes place in a specialway among the staff members. Staff collaboration,which can take various forms, may mean that eachmember of the parish staff feels that his or herspecial leadership abilities are receiving en-couragement. Better coordination of parishprograms may also result.

Of course, collaboration among staff membersholds special challenges, too. It means being opento suggestions and criticisms, respecting differencesof opinion and differences of personality, and tryingto achieve joint decisions.

In some dioceses, parish staff members worktogether as officially appointed teams of priests, oras teams of priests, Religious and lay personnel,who share in the direction of the parish. But even inmany parishes where the more usual structure ismaintained, with an appointed pastor, efforts topromote collaboration among the members of theparish staff are underway.

Whether among the staff members or within theparish as a whole, collaboration and com-munication often seem to be reverse sides of thesame coin. Communication, it seems, is importantwithin any of society's institutions. Family members,for example, need to communicate - to know andunderstand each other - in order to be a family.

In the parish, a special kind of family, com-munication plays a role of similar importance. It ispart of the foundation on which collaboration - thework we do together - is built.

KNOW TOUR FAITH

Communication can be a trickybusiness. Most of us know this fromour own experience. It is a convictionshared by marriage counselors, familytherapists and business consultants aswell.

There are a lot of reasons why this isso. Our Ijves today are very busy; of-ten we don't take the time that isnecessary to listen well or to be clearabout what we really mean when wespeak.

But the reasons can go deeper.Communicating with people meanscoming "up close." Being close toother people can be comforting andexciting and even fun. But, as werealize very regularly in our own lives,it also can be a strain.

In the course of a typical week — atwork, at home, with friends andneighbors - we get close to otherpeople at many points. Obviouslv thesituations vary. The relationship I

have with my teen-age daughter athome, for instance, is much differentfrom the one I have with my im-mediate supervisor at work.

BUT, IN both, I am likely to sensethe other person up close — closeenough to influence me, close enoughfor that person to be affected by whatI do and say, for better and for worse.

Friendship and love can be part ofthe experience of being close to

people. Cooperation or conflict areother possibilities. And here I think ofthe planning or problem-solvingmeeting, perhaps in a parish or atschool.

In all these different situations,communication is important. Futher-more, in any of these instances, com-munication can get complicated - afairly normal circumstance whenpeople get close to each other.

Lef s take an example. I volunteer to

serve as a member of a group ofpeople who are going to have to workclosely together planning a youthministry program for the coming year.After several weeks together, I beginto feel uncomfortable.

THE PROBLEM is not that any oneperson has taken over, dominating thegroup or impeding the work. Rather, itis that I begin to feel these otherpeople are getting too close to me.

My work and my contribution are af-

personalfected by what these others do. Mysuggestion is only one among many.My ideas begin to look different to meafter the group has begun to deal withthem and make changes.

I feel that things aren't going as theyshould, as I expected them to. On theone hand, I react with a take-controlkind of thought: "If only I could getthem to do it my way!" On the otherhand, I feel like dropping out "Theydon't appreciate me anyway; it wouldbe better for me to RO off on my own."

WITH THESE 'feelings, com-munication becomes difficult For itmakes me more interested in defen-ding myself than in sharing my ideas orlistening well to what someone elsehas to say. Furthermore, self-defense isnot a stance that leads to open com-munication.

Then how does one move beyondfeeling defensive? Again, many factorsare involved: my level of self-confidence; the emotional support Ifeel; the sense J have of the risks atstake for me.

In addition, the convictions I holdabout other people can be a key factorin moving beyond defensive feelings.What are other people for? If I valueothers only to the extent that they can,fill my needs, then open com-munication is unlikely.

Here religious values come to bear.As Christians, we celebrate theaudacious conviction that in ourneighbor we meet Christ Obviously,this conviction doesn't do away withall the many practical difficulties ofcommunication. But it can help us torecognize the feelings that maydevelop when we get close to people;to recognize the power and grace ofbeing close, as well.

Several concerns motivated Matthew to recast thetraditional material about Jesus in the form of a new Gospel.These concerns were varied. They had to do with preaching,liturgical celebration and controversy with people outside theChristian community.

A more fundamental situation was created by the dynamiclife ofjjthe community itself. Matthew's community was ex-periencing unsettling changes and its thinking about themeaning of Christianity was developing; the material aboutJesus had to be applied to the life of this community if thecommunity was to remain alive and vital.

Just as there are people today who are unsettled by events in,the church's life - for example, the liturgy - there were those inMatthew's church who were upset by events. Matthew had toreassure them and that required prudence, tact and a generousdash of genius. The Gospel of Mark, valuable as it was, was notthe last word.

THE FERMENT SEETHING in Matthew's community bubbles upthroughout the Gospel. Some people are allowing theircharismatic gifts to blind them to the basic demands of religion(Chapter 7); community leaders are derelict in their duty,causing scandal to the faithful, leading to neglect of strayingmembers and an insensitive lack of forgiveness (Chapter 18).

The great discourse of Chapter 24 points to the existence offalse messiahs and self-styled prophets, persecution, betrayaland a lessening of love and zeal on the part of Christians.

All these factors indicate a community in transition, and the

single most important factor in the transition was the change inthe very makeup of the community. What had been a staun-chly Jewish-Christian church was becoming more and~moregentile in membership. It is hard for us to appreciate thetrauma this caused for many among the original members.

AS JEWS, THEY WERE passionately, and understandably,loyal to the Law of Moses and to the traditions and customswhich made up the very fabric of their lives. Then, along comegentiles, fellow Christians, who do not relate to the Jewish lawin that way.

This posed a real problem for Matthew. He had to ease hiscommunity into a new situation while still respecting their sen-sibilities. He did not want to reject those sensibilities out ofhand. Matthew had too much respect for the tradition to doanything so drastic.

But neither could he deny what was happening in his com-munity. Matthew had to find a way to accept the new withoutcompletely destroying the old - a delicate task, as indicated inthe words of Jesus at the end of Chapter 13: "Every scribe whois learned in the reign of God is like the head of a householdwho can bring from his storeroom both the new and the old."

Matthew's desire to move with the times without turning hisback on the old is suggested, too, by the way he edits thesaying about putting new wine in old skins. In the earlierGospel, Mark cautioned against this, lest both wine and skinsbe lost.

Matthew's version ends, "No, they pour new wine into newwineskins, and in that both are preserved."

Mary's daily journey isinspirationfor Way ofthe Cross

By Desmond SullivanJERUSALEM (NC) - Tradition says it was the mother of Jesus herself who

began the Way of the cross, by making daily visits to places that heldmemories of her Son's suffering and death.

MARY WOULD BEGIN her daily journey by walking past the house of theJewish high priest Caiphas, who charged Jesus with blasphemy and finallycondemned Him to death. She would proceed down the low road below thehuge walls of the Temple then across the brook Kidron to the Garden ofOlives.

From there she would walk into the city, across the courtyard of Pilate, andup the long hill to Calvary.

In a nearby garden was the tomb in which Christ was laid after His death andbefore His resurrection.

Mary's walk of meditation has been followed by generations of Christiansand is to this day. Every day at 3 p.m., a Franciscan priest waits for pilgrims atthe spot where Jesus was condemned to death by Pilate. The buiJdings havechanged. Shops, convents, a mosque and a street replaced Pilate's fortress.But archaelogists have found underground the pavement of the courtyardcalled Lithostrotos by St. John. Here pilgrims pause to start their meditationsat the first station of the Way of the Cross. ; •

THEY START down the narrow street of Via Dolorosa along which Christ boreHis cross - the second station. It leads past the Oriental Bazaar and crowds ofmerchants. At a point where the road turns and starts the ilong climb up toCalvary, Christ, carrying the heavy cross, stumbled and fell. A small Polishchapel commemorates this third station.

Near the place where He fell, Mary stood unobtrusively1 that first GoodFriday. She met her Son at this, the fourth station.

A few hundred yards farther, the soldiers realized Jesus could not make itup the long hill. So they forced Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross. Today astone set in the wall, touched and worn by the hands of the pilgrims, marksthe spot and a chapel of Simon commemorates the fifth station.

A street of steps then climbs up the hill. These days it is a qjuiet street with afew souvenir shops, a baker and two tourist attractions: anjexhibition of Ar-menian pottery and another of Palestinian embroidery. :

BUT WHEN JESUS walked up the street, angry crowds in a lynch-mob mood.were gathered in the narrow street.

An uncertain tradition says a women at a window above the street saw*Jesus and rushed down to remove sweat and blood from His face with atowel, the "Vera Ikon."

The face of Jesus was forever printed on that towel and ako gave its nameto that woman of compassion, Veronica.Nowthe Little Sisters, of Jesus have ashrine chapel on this, the sixth station.

The Sisters also have a small workshop where they prepare ikons of themysteries of the Redemption.

THE SEVENTH station, where Jesus fell the second time, is a small cornerchapel on a bustling market road. Pilgrims trying to pray and meditate herehave a hard time with the crush of tourists, the shouting of merchants, andthe hurrying messengers.

In Jesus' day this marked the edge of town. A Gate of Judgement stood atthis spot, leading from the city hall wall to the hill of execution.

Tradition says that on the gate was posted the notice of condemnation, andup to this point, criminals had chances for clemency from the Roman gover-nors. But once through the gate, there was no chance for remission. Thewomen of Jerusalem knew this and waited here. Jesus spoke to them at thiseighth station and then continued His journey.

Golgotha (place of the skull) lay beyond the gate. It was near the top ofthe hill that Jesus fell again - the ninth station.

The soldiers then stripped Christ and nailed Him to the cross.The 10th and 11th stations are only a few feet apart. On the highest point of

the hill, one may still touch the rock cleft in which stood the cross on whichHe died and from which He was taken down, the 12 th and 13th stations.And after He died, it was not far to carry Him to the private garden on theother side on the hill, where He finished the first Way of the Cross at the 14thstation, the tomb.

Constituido en el Sefior por Su resurreccidn, Cristo aQuien todo poder en los cielos y en la tierra ha sido dadosigue obrando en los corazones de los hombres por elpoder del Espiritu. El no solo despierta en ellos un anhelopor el mundo venidero sino que, por este mismo hecho, Eltambien inspira, purifica y fortalece aquellos deseosgenerosos por los cuales la familia humana busca el hacer supropia vida mas humana y el alcanzar las mismas metas paratodos sus miembros.

Se Oponen Obisposa Casinos de Juego

Boston (NC) - Los cuatro obis-pos de Massachusetts han ex-presado su oposicion a los in-tentos de legalizar los casinosde juego en Massachusetts.

El Cardenal Humberto Medei-ros, de Boston, el obispo Ber-nard J. Flanagam, de Wor-cester, Joseph F. Maguire, deSpringfield y Daniel A. Cronin,de Fall River se unieron en unadeclaracion hecha en Abril 9,sobre la materia.

Los obispos declaran queellos "estan alarmados por losnumerosos efectos negativosque tendrian los casinos entrelos ciudadanos."

Entre los efectos negativossenalan el peligro de la presen-cia y participacion del crimenorganizado en este negocio, lapotencial corrupcion deoficiales publicos, laestimulacion del juego ilegal,aumento en el consumo debebidas alcoholicas y la intro-

1) El llamado "Post-Encuentro"semanal. Se comienza con unaMisa familiar comunitaria. Seconcluye todo con una con-ferencia a cargo deprofesionales, sacerdotes,padres o hijos... con el fin dellevar a todos, segun sus diver-sos niveles, a una mayorprofundizacion en la grandezade la familia. Peliculas contema familiar se exhiben ycomentan por padres e hijos.

2) Fiestas Familiares. Se tienenvarios Picnics al afio y bailesfamiliares con animadas com-petencias entre padres e hijos.

3) Dia de las Madres o de losPadres. Preparados con unanoche especial, dedicada arecordar lo que un padre y unamadre significan en la vida delHogar.

4) Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia.Es la gran fiesta institucional;del ultimo domingo deDiciembre. La gran ocasionpara poner delante a cada unosu propio modelo en la familia.

5) Una oficina, siempre abier-ta y rebosante de calor familiar,todos los dias laborables, de9:00 a.m: a 5:00 p.m. con eldeseo de servir desin-teresadamente y de orientar alas familias que acudan.

Enmienda ERA y Abortovan juntos

Existe una gran confusionrespecto a si la enmienda"ERA" (Equal Rights Amend-ment - enmienda de derechosiguales para la mujer)establecera o no el derecho alaborto provocado en la consti-tucion de EE.UU., de serratificada por los estadosnecesarios. El debate va cadadia en aumento, segun se acer-ca el fin del terminoestablecido en el cual la en-mienda debera ser aprobadapor las legislaturas estatales ode lo contrario quedar anulada.

Las" feministas aleganque "ERA" es necesaria paraeliminar totalmente ladiscrimancion y proporcionarigualda de derechos a la mujer.Sin embargo, dichadiscrimjnacion ya es ilegalmediante el Acta de DerechosCiviles (1964), el Acta deIgualdad de Salarios (1963), yde Igualdad de Oportunidadesde Empleos (1972). La igualdadde derechos tambien estagarantizada por la Enmiendanumero 14 a la Constitution,asl como por numerososdecretos que dan a la mujermoderna las mismas oportuni-dades economicas y socialesque disfrutan los hombres. En-tonces, ^por que continuanpromoviendo la "ERA"?Veamos que dicen algunas delas principales lideres del movi-miento.

Una circular del Fondo Legaly Educacional de la Organiza-cion Nacional de Mujeres("N.O.W.") firmada por BettyFriedan, dice: "ERA es esencia ysimbolo del movimiento feme-nino a favor de la igualdad...estoy convencida de que siperdemos esta batalla ten-dremos pocas esperanzas desalvaguardar, en el curso denuestras vidas, el derecho alaborto". Una de lasresoluciones aprobadas en laconvencion nacional de"NOW" pedia: "el fin de la dis-criminaci6n en las leyes que serelacionan con el aborto".

Cualquier duda que pudieraexistir respecto a la conexionentre "ERA" y el abortohomicida, y como las cortes in-terpretaran el asunto, quedodisipada el pasado 24 de JuHocuando los jueces de la CorteSuprema de Massachussettsfaliaron que los fondos de im-puestos "Medicaid" del estadotienen que ser usados (por lomenos temporalmente) parapagar abortos homicidasbasando su decision en la cons-titucion del estado, yespecificamente en la enmien-da "ERA" dijeron que excluir elaborto provocado en los pagosde asistencia publica solo afec-taria a las mujeres y por lo tan-to seria discriminatorio. Estepleito para forzar al estado deMassachussetts a pagar por losabortos de las mujeres pobresfue iniciado por el "AmericanCivil Liberties Union", (UnionAmericana de LibertadesCiviles) que promueve el abor-to a traves del pals.

No queda duda alguna deque el dercho al aborto es paralas feministas-liberacionistas,una parte primordial e in-dispensable a la libertad totalde la mujer. Segun ellas, al ser"liberada" del embarazo, lamujer queda libre por com-pleto para competir con elhombre en todas las esferas. Esuna ironia su concepto de que"realizarse" es rechazar supropia femineidad biologica.

En su celo por lograr la apro-bacion de "ERA", han impuestoun "boycott" economico a laFlorida porque sus legislado-res, se han negado a ratificar laenmienda. Este ano dichoslegisladores votaran de nuevosobre si "ERA" sera o noaprobada, y lo haran bajo unagran presion a favor de la en-mienda por parte de muchoshombres de negocios queopinan, que estan perdiendodinero debido al "boycott"economico del movimientopro-ERA y pro-aborto. De lascartas, llamadas, telegramas yvisitas que reciban loslegisladores estatales de per-sonas opuestas a "ERA" (paracontrarrestar dicha presi6n)dependera la decisi6n queellos tomen a favor o en contrade la enmienda al abrir susesion la legislatura, en Abril.

Este evento de Miami,organizado por los dirigentesecumenicos que prepararon elprimer "Washington por Jesus",en la capital de la nacion lapasada primavera, es solo elprincipio de lo que se esperasea una cadena de actos que secelebraran en veinte ciudadesdel pals en el futuro.
