It is a 4 storeyed block with a total floor area of over 6000sqm. The pediatric wards are well designed for exclusive use for children. The room layout allows actual visualization of all patients from the central station. The bed area allows enough space for performing routine ICU procedures such as central lines, chest tube placement as well as for easy access for portable X-ray machines or Ultra sound. The facility has seamless floors in surgical areas to lower risk of infections. Careful selection of finishes was done to easy cleaning and maintenance. All patient rooms have windows for proper air circulation and adequate lighting.

Narrative Description of Project: A visual assessment of 16 health facilities was carried out and we were to recommend remedial solutions. For cases of expansion, we were supposed to prepare the structural designs. Evidence gathered during the site visits indicates that all structures were single storied masonry units with a few of them tied with columns and a ring beam. Whereas some of the health centers were in fairly functional condition, others had extensive structural damages which needed urgent attention. The 16 health centers include;

The floor area of the building is approximately 2200sqm. The 30-bed facility was designed as a two-storey building with a ground and first floor. The roof level of the building had both pitched and flat roof areas. The pitched roof areas were specially designed out of timber trusses which were to support the roofing sheets. The flat roof areas were designed as RC solid slabs to avoid leakages and also water proofed to enhance their water tightness.

The design comprises a screen detail to the building’s lower façade, which provokes a play of light and shade in the space. Fully clad exterior walls are contrasted with glass curtain walls giving visibility into the different levels premised on natural lighting. Two entry points have been integrated; the main entrance off of Kampala road and the second off of Duster street. The use of concealed lighting, high quality finishes such as polished granite and porcelain tiles, frameless glass, textured paint and brushed stainless steel have been employed. The building’s two wings are connected by a central circulation core consisting of common facilities such as lifts, the main staircase, lavatories and pantries—which provide a space and energy efficient occupancy of the building.

The design is a modern office facility with naturally lit and contemporary corporate environments, and a louvered façade to intersect the western sun due to the building’s east-west orientation. Prefabricated material makes up some of the indoor components thus reducing air and soil pollution on site which is created in traditional construction. It allows for better infiltration and increased energy efficiency as effluents and air particles are treated in a controlled environment. During co-ordination and dissemination of information, BIM software was used hence reduced use of paper blueprint drawings which saved a lot of trees. Trees around the plot were maintained and this improve the storm water drainage.

This minimises energy requirements for artificial air-conditioning & lighting. The open spaces around the building exterior are laid with interlocking self-draining pavers which reduce pressure on the existing stormwater drainage system and keeps natural waterways free of debris. Green areas around the building constitute 20% of the plot area, which contributes to the city’s green house gas reduction.

It also included the changing of the 15m wide main entrance canopy completely. The main atrium is bordered by shops and large circular rectangular pillars to support the structure of the building. The escalators provide access to the mezzanine level from which shoppers have a glaring view of the atrium and its events.

The landlord engaged a consultant who prepared a design for the replacement wall. However, due to the collapse, the client was concerned about the stability of almost the entire perimeter wall as well as the design of the replacement wall. As a result, there was a proposal to investigate the cause of the collapse section of the wall, the effectiveness of the replacement wall and the stability of the existing walls.

This project was executed in phases, Phase 1 – 3 of the bus terminal construction was completed and now on the last phase which comprises of the perimeter wall fence, access ramp/fire escape and passenger shed. The Moroto bus terminal site on which the proposed additional works are constructed was seated on black cotton soils. Black cotton soils are mainly composed of clay minerals and is highly expansive when exposed to moisture. Given the nature of these soils, they were removed and replaced with new compacted murram soil fill and a raft foundation was used. Geotechnical investigations were carried out to facilitate the ramp and market shed design. A strict quality control schedule for all aspects of works was developed that will include approvals and rejection criteria such as standard material tests for the contractor to use during construction of the additional works.

The data center also aims to reduce energy loss and waste by 25% through high-efficiency transformers, PDUs and UPS devices. Construction waste ending up in a landfill has been reduced by 5% so far, on account of optimized design and construction methodology. A greening master plan was designed to ensure that project blends in the natural surrounding green vegetation. The project will include a high-tech bio digester that will help in the recycling of the waste water.

The administration block on each warehouse is a three-storey reinforced concrete building. The staff facilities block is a two-storey reinforced concrete building and it provides space for changing rooms and a canteen. The site is between two access roads and therefore each zone has two accesses on opposite sides. The floors for the warehouses were elevated by 1.2m above the parking level so as to simplify loading and offloading of trucks. A stringer ground beam 600m deep was therefore introduced above the plinth wall so as to enhance the stability of the 1.2m wall. The ground floor concrete will be power floated and will contain contraction joints at grids of 4.5m with an appropriate sealant.
