E x o b i o l o g y i n t h e h i s t o r y o f a s t r o n o m y

T h e d e v e l o p m e n t o f a s t r o n o m y f o l l o w i n g t h e i n v e n t i o n o f t h e t e l e s c o p e w a s r a p i d . E a r l y a s t r o n o m e r s s e e m t o h a v e a s s u m e d t h a t t h e p l a n e t s t h e y n o w r e a l i s e d w e r e o t h e r w o r l d s w o u l d b e v e r y s i m i l a r t o t h e e a r t h . T o p o p u l a t e t h e m w i t h h u m a n b e i n g s ( o r , a t l e a s t , h u m a n - l i k e b e i n g s ) w a s a n a t u r a l a s s u m p t i o n . A s e a r l y a s 1 6 9 8 , t h e a s t r o n o m e r H u y g e n s d i s c u s s e d t h e f e a t u r e s a p l a n e t r e q u i r e s t o a l l o w i t t o s u p p o r t l i f e a n d e v e n s p e c u l a t e d a b o u t e x t r a t e r r e s t r i a l i n t e l l i g e n c e i n h i s b o o k Cosmotheros ( 1 7 5 7 ) .

D u r i n g t h e o p p o s i t i o n o f 1 8 7 7 , P r o f e s s o r G i o v a n n i V S c h i a p a r e l l i ( 1 8 3 5 - 1 9 1 0 , d i r e c t o r o f t h e B r e r a O b s e r v a t o r y i n M i l a n f r o m 1 8 6 2 t o 1 9 0 0 ) d i s c o v e r e d a n e t w o r k o f n a r r o w d a r k l i n e s r u n n i n g b e t w e e n t h e l a r g e r d a r k a r e a s o n M a r s , w h i c h h e n a m e d canali, ' c h a n n e l s ' . T w o y e a r s l a t e r , h e n o t e d t h a t s o m e o f t h e canali a p p e a r e d a s d o u b l e l i n e s , a f e a t u r e h e a t t r i b u t e d t o v e g e t a t i o n g r o w t h d u e t o m e l t w a t e r f r o m t h e p o l a r c a p s f l o w i n g a l o n g canali. M o s t n o t a b l e o f t h e s e w a s P e r c i v a l L o v e l l , t h e m i l l i o n a i r e p h i l a n t h r o p i s t a n d a m a t e u r a s t r o n o m e r , e v e n t u a l c o - d i s c o v e r e r o f P l u t o . H o w e v e r , f r o m t h e o u t s e t , b o t h t h e e x p l a n a t i o n a n d e x i s t e n c e o f S c h i a p a r e l l i ' s canali w e r e b e s e t w i t h c o n t r o v e r s y . I t i s s t i l l u n c l e a r w h a t S c h i a p a r e l l i a n d o t h e r a s t r o n o m e r s h a d o b s e r v e d , a l t h o u g h o n e p o s s i b i l i t y i s t h a t g r o u p s o f u n r e l a t e d f e a t u r e s o n t h e s u r f a c e o f t h e p l a n e t , a t t h e v e r y l i m i t s o f v i s i b i l i t y t h r o u g h t e l e s c o p e s o f t h e d a y , w e r e b e i n g j o i n e d t h r o u g h o p t i c a l i l l u s i o n s i n t o s t r a i g h t l i n e s .

B y t h e l a t e 1 9 5 0 s , o t h e r s u g g e s t i o n s w e r e b e i n g m a d e a b o u t t h e b e s t w a y t o i d e n t i f y i n t e l l i g e n t l i f e o n o t h e r p l a n e t s . M o s t a s t r o n o m e r s h a d c o n c l u d e d t h a t i t w a s u n l i k e l y t h a t i n t e l l i g e n t l i f e w o u l d b e f o u n d a n y w h e r e i n t h e s o l a r s y s t e m , s o t e c h n i q u e s w e r e p r o p o s e d f o r l o c a t i n g s u c h l i f e e l s e w h e r e i n o u r g a l a x y . I n 1 9 5 9 , G i u s e p p i C o c c o n i a n d P h i l i p M o r r i s o n o f C o r n e l l U n i v e r s i t y p u b l i s h e d a n a r t i c l e i n N a t u r e p o i n t i n g o u t t h e p o t e n t i a l f o r u s i n g m i c r o w a v e r a d i o t o c o m m u n i c a t e b e t w e e n t h e s t a r s .
