WORKSHEET-30Ans. 1 : 112 Bank Street Agra 17 May 20XX The Editor The Times of India New Delhi Subject : Evaluation System Sir, Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw your attention towards

the evaluation system which is prevalent these days in all the schools. The evaluation is done round the year through some short pen-paper tests and project

work. The students feel burdened with the project work that is given in all the subjects. Sometimes, the students can’t appear in the short tests due to their illness or some family functions, but their absence affects their result. On the other hand, two pen-paper tests help the teachers to find out the weak areas of a particular child and thus, can help them in improving that particular area or subject.

I hope that you will publish this letter in your newspaper so that the concerned authorities give it a thought again and take the decision accordingly.

Thanking you Yours sincerely Aarti 8

Detailed Answer : F-114 Mall Road, Agra 24 July 20 XX The Editor The Hindu Agra Subject : Increasing Dependence on the Coaching Institutions

P-16 E N G L I S H C O M M U N I C A T I V E – X

Sir, Through the columns of your reputed newspaper I wish to draw the attention of the general

public towards the increasing dependence of students on the coaching institutes. It has generally been observed that students rely more on coaching institutions than on schools. The reason behind this is that these centres are easily accessible and more practice-based. On the other hand, schools prepare students only for the Board Exams and not for the entrance exams.

This trend can be checked by ensuring that teaching in the school classroom is not just limited to board-oriented syllabus. They must prepare students for competitive exams also. Schools must provide more practice-material to the students. The environment of the classroom should be such that the students get interested in studies.

Teachers should pay attention to the individual problems. I hope you will publish this letter in your newspaper so that the concerned authorities

become aware of their shortcomings and do the needful. Thanking you Your Sincerely Arun 8

WORKSHEET-31Ans. 1 : 147, Mayur Vihar New Delhi 11 April 20×× The Editor Hindustan Times New Delhi Subject : Evoking Awareness Towards Solar Energy Sir, Through the columns of your reputed newspaper, I wish to make people aware of the

growing need and demands for solar power. We all know that our earth is showing signs of a patient in declining health and this is due to the excessive pollution on our planet. Man has a desire to live a luxurious life and for that, he is overconsuming electricity. He doesn’t realize that the overuse will exhaust the resources of our planet. We must conserve electricity which is the need of the hour.

This conservation can only be done if we start using solar power systems. Various kinds of solar systems like solar cookers, solar lanterns, solar heating and cooking systems, solar water heaters, etc., are available in the market.

These solar systems are non-polluting. They are economical and are available in different sizes. So, I request you to publish this letter in your newspaper in order to make people aware of the need for conserving electricity and limiting electricity bills. The public must pay attention to the dire need for switching over to solar energy.

Subject : Rising Prices Sir, I wish to draw your attention towards the rising inflation which has made life difficult for

the common man. It was not so in earlier times when things were very cheap and were within the reach of almost everyone. The sharp rise in the prices of all commodities has made it difficult for the common man to make both ends meet. He cannot bear even the daily expenses of his family. This is giving rise to disappointments and dejections in the life of the common people. Corruption is also on the rise, so as to avoid financial crisis, people are turning towards bribery which is the root cause of all evils. The society is taking a bad turn only because of inflation.

It is high time that the concerned authorities wake up to this social problem and try to put reins on the rising prices so that people can lead a comfortable and peaceful life.

WORKSHEET-32Ans. 1 : 230 C.O.D. Colony New Delhi 15th May 20×× The Editor The Times of India New Delhi Subject : Human Dependence on Technology Sir, Through this letter of mine, I wish to draw the attention of everyone towards the increased

dependence of humans on technology. We use internet for any type of information which we can find only a click away. Everyone, whether a child or an adult, wants gadgets like cell phones, I-pods, laptops, etc. No doubt, technology is a boon to mankind and has a great future ahead, but in my opinion, we should not depend on it as excess of everything is bad. It is making everyone lazy. On the other hand, cyber-crimes are also increasing. The key word for this is caution.

We must make judicious use of technology and should not completely depend on it. We must believe in natural and simple living.

P-18 E N G L I S H C O M M U N I C A T I V E – X

Sir, Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the

public towards the changing trends in the recreational activities of children in modern times. It is shocking to know that present day children don’t want to spend their leisure hours in book-reading, sports and games or any other outdoor activities as was done in the years from 1960-1980. Rather, modern day juveniles are more interested in indoor activities. Only 10% of them are interested in book reading whereas, 60% can be seen busy with gadgets. This is not a positive trend. It is leading our children towards poor health and stamina.

In my opinion, children should be made to understand the importance of reading books and this can be done at the school level as well as by parental interference. The advantages of outdoor games must be stressed upon. They must realise that outdoor games impart to them the value of discipline as well as team spirit. Parents should not provide them with electronic gadgets at an early stage.

I hope this letter of mine will spread awareness among children as well as parents and that the recreational activities of children will again get channelized in a positive way.

Thanking you Yours sincerely Malavika (Health Specialist) 8

B. STORY WRITING

WORKSHEET-33Ans. 1 : Tit for Tat In a forest, there lived an elephant who was very naughty. He always indulged in

mischievous behaviour like throwing water on other animals, threatening to trample the smaller animals, if they did not listen to what he said and so on.

One day, he met a baby giraffe who had lost his way in the forest and was crying. The elephant helped him in finding his mother and they both became good friends. Now the inhabitants of the forest were scared of the two animals–the elephant and the giraffe because the giraffe always accompanied the elephant.

One fine morning, a saint passed through that forest. He loved the peace and calmness of that place and decided to stay there. He was very happy among the chirping of birds in the morning, the pleasant and pure air etc. The giraffe and the elephant also heard about his home and came to that place. They saw that the saint was busy in his prayers with his eyes closed. They broke the branches of the trees under which he was sitting. The saint didn’t pay any attention to them. They started throwing the utensils and clothes from the saints’ hut. Even then he didn’t say anything, this was too much for both the animals. The elephant went to the river and came back with water. Meanwhile, the giraffe broke leaves from the trees. Then they both started disturbing the saint by throwing water and leaves on him. The saint became very annoyed. He opened his eyes and saw both the animals. Then, in a rage, he cursed the elephant to live with a long trunk and the giraffe with a long neck. Both the animals got scared. They begged the saint to take back his curse but he didn’t. Since then, the elephant has had a long trunk and the giraffe – a long neck. 10

Ans. 2 : Sheena was enjoying her world of dreams when she heard a noise. She got up with a start and started listening to the sounds. She realised that the sounds were coming from the street. She ran outside her house and saw that a snake charmer was surrounded by a group of children. The children were very excited because the man was playing a tune and a black coloured snake was swaying his body to that tune. When the snake charmer stopped playing the music, the snake settled down into the basket where he was kept. People gave some coins to the snake charmer and went their way.

Sheena kept standing there. She was attracted towards the three cane–baskets which the snake charmer was carrying in his bag. She pointed towards them and asked him what was there in those baskets. The man opened the baskets. Sheena saw that there were two more snakes. She was scared but was excited also. She told the snake charmer to come every day. The snake charmer smiled, lifted his bag and went to the next street.

Sheena kept on waiting the whole day for the snake charmer, but he didn’t turn up for another few days. But one day she again heard the same tune near her window. She looked out of the window and saw the same charmer sitting outside with his snake, swaying to the tune played by him. She ran outside when the show was over, she asked him why he hadn’t come for so many days. The man smiled and told her that his son had not been keeping well and he had gone to the nearby city for his treatment. He also informed her that the treatment was quite expensive and that’s why he had come back again to collect some money. Sheena told him to wait there and ran inside to talk to her father who was a doctor. His father gave him a reference letter for the doctor treating his son. The snake charmer was very happy. Tears filled his eyes. He took the letter and went back home with a ray of hope in his eyes. Sheena kissed her father and went inside. She was glad that she had helped someone in his hour of need. 10

Ans. 2 : A Snake Scare It was a pleasant morning, a little girl was sleeping in her bed. Suddenly, she heard a loud

noise and became scared. She woke up and saw that all the family members were looking curiously at her as if she was sleeping amongst scary things. She looked around to see what had happened. She looked at the face of everyone and could see a shocked expression on each face. Then she noticed that something moved near her foot. Her gaze shifted to her feet and a scream came out of her throat. Her father hushed her and told her not to move. Actually, a snake was sitting at the foot of her bed. Everyone was scared and didn’t know what to do. A little movement would have made that coiled figure attack. Soon, their neighbour came and said that he knew a person who handled snakes. He went out to call that man. No one in the family dared to move. The little girl was frightened to death. She did not know what to do. Suddenly, there was slight movement. The snake looked around and noticed everyone. Then it started uncoiling itself and moved towards the end of the bed to get down. All were stunned and prepared for any sort of emergency, but the snake didn’t do anything to anyone and moved silently out of the open window. There was a mixed feeling of horror and happiness. The moment the end of the tail went out of the window, her father rushed to bolt the window and ordered that the bushes around the house must be trimmed so that no such incident took place in the future. 10

WORKSHEET-37Ans. 1 : I have always enjoyed taking long walks among the forests from the days of my childhood.

Last summer I had visited my cousin Pooja living in Dehradun. I had reached Dehradun at night by the bus. I had my dinner with Pooja and we had some talk, then I went to sleep by 10:30 p.m. In the morning as usual I got up early at 6 o’clock and enquired from Pooja the place where I could go for my morning walk. She told me to go straight and come back and to not take any turns or short-cuts. But when I came on the road, I was so delighted by the nature’s beauty that I went on walking without realizing that I had entered into the forest listening to the chirping of the birds. The sun was going to rise, the tall thick trees tempted me. I wanted to explore the forest. I saw beautiful fauna, trees, birds etc. I was busy plucking flowers for my daily pooja in the temple. I went on, and on until my whole bag was filled with flowers. Then I tried to find out time, I realized that I was not wearing my watch. Then I saw the time in my mobile, oh God! It was 7:30, by this time my cousin Pooja will be leaving for office within half an-hour. So I lost my way and tried to find some shortcut to reach home. When I was rushing, I happened to bang against one tree, oh goodness! within few seconds the parallel tree toppled on me pinning me underneath. I tried to come out but I couldn’t, then suddenly I thought of giving a call to Pooja but my mobile was missing. It was lying nearby. I somehow found the mobile, thank-god Pooja’s number was saved in it. I

called her and asked her help. I told her about the landmark of one tall yellow colour multi-storey building. She managed to call forest authorities and I was rescued by 9 pm. 10

He wanted to turn back but he did not want to go through the park again. He glanced at his watch and was horrified to see that it was 10 o’ clock. He knew that his mother must be waiting for him. May be my strange friend will come again to meet me ! 10

WORKSHEET-40Ans. 1 : It was a dark night. I had gone camping with my NCC group. We camped in a quiet jungle.

Everything was still. I could not sleep due to excessive mosquitoes and the screeching of owls. I thought of exploring the thick pine forest. As I walked through it, I sensed someone following me. I stopped, looked back but could not see anyone. I decided to hide behind a tree and find out who was there. Suddenly, I saw someone passing in front of me. I stood still for sometime then I got up and followed the footprints trail. I reached a lonely house which was hidden behind trees. I entered the house and was shocked to see some people loading and unloading the cartons. There were around ten men who were all wearing masks. They all seemed to be from good background as their clothes and dressing sense suggested. I immediately realized the need to inform the police as I alone would not be able to stop them from illegal activities. I rang up the police-station through my cell phone. Within fifteen minutes the police was there, and nabbed all of them. The police later told me that they all were in drug business and thanked me for helping them. 10

Ans. 2 : It was very hot last night. I had slept with the windows open. At around 2 O’clock I heard a noise in my room. I tried to look around and got a faint glimpse of a man entering through the open window. I felt afraid. The man entered with a torch in his hand. With the help of a torch-light, he located the cupboard in my room. Walking stealthily, he moved towards it. I gathered my courage and told myself to do something. Suddenly, an idea struck my mind as I could not make any noise to make the thief aware of my presence. I gave a missed call through my cell phone to my parents who were sleeping in the next room. My father, a bit perplexed, came to my room. The moment he opened the door, the thief tried to run away. By that time I’d made up my mind to hit him with the water-bottle lying near my bed. The target was quite close. He jumped but the bottle hit him badly and he fell down. We caught him and handed him over to the police. 10

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : 45 New Avenue Street Verona 9 April 20×× Dear Albert, Last week, I met two boys who can be called the Gentlemen of Verona. They are very hard-

working boys. I have taken a liking to them and that’s why I want to help these two boys, Jacopo and Nicola. They are putting in extra labour for their sister ‘Lucia’ who is not well and is suffering from tuberculosis of the spine. For her treatment a lot of money is required. I’ve decided to help them by paying their hospital bills for as long as I can afford. Suddenly, I recalled you and thought to ask you also about contributing some money to aid Lucia’s treatment. I know that you’re a philanthropist and would not hesitate to help them.

Waiting for an early reply from your end. Yours sincerely A. J. Cronin 8

Ans. 2 : (a) Nicola. 1 (b) He is speaking to the narrator. 1 (c) Because he wanted to keep his secret about the treatment of his tuberculosis-afflicted

sister. 1 (d) Soft spoken, polite, wishing to fight his battle independently, self-respect, responsible,

doesn’t share his problems (reserved). 1Short Answer Type SolutionsAns. 1 : The two boys were very hard-working. They were waiting for the last bus from Padua so as

to sell their newspapers. 2Ans. 2 : The two boys Nicola and Jacopo were too dignified to disturb a stranger with their personal

matters. They did not want anyone to intrude into their privacy. So, they kept their problems a secret. 2

Ans. 3 : Jacopo and Nicola were working hard as their sister was suffering from tuberculosis of the spine and was under treatment. They were collecting money for her treatment. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : The narrator was deeply touched by the devotion of Jacopo and Nicola towards their work.

They did not resort to any shortcut methods. They had self-respect and were highly secretive in not revealing their personal problems to strangers. Their love and care for their sister also touched the narrator. He realized that these two boys were the embodiment of selflessness, nobility, and gentlemanliness. They gave promise of a greater hope for the human society. In the days full of a variety of disasters and distractions faced by the humans, the two boys stood apart to show him hope, faith, positive thinking. He knew that their hard work would take them a long way. 8

resourceful and dogged in their determination to do useful work. This impressed the narrator and his companion. The boys’ intention was to do a good job and earn money, not to impress anyone. 2

Ans. 2 : The nurse told him that the two boys had no one except their sick sister in this world. They worked very hard to earn money for the treatment of their sister. 2

Ans. 3 : Lucia is the elder sister of Nicola and Jacopo. She is suffering from tuberculosis of the spine and is in a hospital for treatment. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Virtues of Hard Work Hard work is the key to success. There’s no person in this world who has not tasted the fruit

of hard work. Nothing is impossible in this world. The only quality one needs to achieve success in life is hard work followed by patience. No doubt, many difficulties appear on the path of hard work but dedication and determination help to make those difficulties disappear. The path of success is not a bed of roses. One is bound to face failure also but by moving ahead slowly and steadily we can overcome all the difficulties and failures. So, one must work hard to attain success in life and achieve one’s goal. Hard work can make even a Herculean task easier. 8

C. Mrs. PACKLETIDE’S TIGER

WORKSHEET-63Extract Based SolutionsAns. 1 : (a) This world is chiefly swayed by hunger and love. 1 (b) She was neither swayed by love nor by hunger. 1 (c) All movements and motives of Mrs. Packletide were mostly governed by her dislike of

Loona Bimberton. 1 (d) Moved. 1Ans. 2 : (a) the tiger which was brought to fulfil Mrs. Packletide’s desire is referred to as the herd-

robber. 1 (b) the herd-robber was suffering from the infirmities of age. It was feared that he would

die before the shooting took place. 1 (c) venerable means old and respectable. 1 (d) Restless. 1Short Answer Type SolutionsAns. 1 : Mrs. Packletide loved showing off and to be mentioned in the magazines. She drew pleasure

from making others feel inferior and low. So, she decided to kill a tiger in order to be in the limelight and also to make Loona Bimberton feel small. 2

Ans. 2 : Mrs. Packletide had arranged a luncheon party in her mind. Actually, her purpose was to show her and others the skin rug of the tiger, she had killed. She had also designed a tiger-claw brooch which she wanted to gift Loona Bimberton on her birthday. 2

Ans. 3 : Mrs. Packletide’s only aim in life was to surpass Loona Bimberton, who was very popular for her adventurous and exciting deeds. By giving a party in her honour, Mrs. Packletide wanted to show her that she had done a more adventurous and exciting thing by shooting a tiger. She even wanted to gift a tiger-claw brooch to Loona on her birthday just to outshine her. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Jealous of Loona Bimberton, Mrs. Packletide wished to embarrass her. She wanted to

outshine her by proving that she was more adventurous than her rival Loona Bimberton who had been carried eleven miles in an aeroplane by an Algerian pilot. In her wish to procure a tiger skin, she chose to shoot an old tiger. However, having a poor aim she shot a goat rather than the tiger. Mrs. Packletide achieved what she had desired, to prove her superiority over Loona Bimberton and to be popular for her amazing feat. But this fulfilment came with a price. She had to buy an expensive cottage for Miss Mebbin who threatened to expose her secret. Thus, her heart’s desire became a constant trouble for her as Miss Mebbin could blackmail her further whenever she wanted anything from her. 8

same Moscow hotel. 1 (c) She blackmailed Mrs. Packletide and forced her to buy a cottage for herself. 1 (d) She was cunning/greedy/money-minded. 1Ans. 2 : (a) She is excited at the sight of the tiger moving towards the goat. 1 (b) These lines show that she tried to take advantage of every situation. 1 (c) Miss Mebbin is with Mrs. Packletide, ready to kill a tiger. 1 (d) She is sitting platform constructed in a jungle. 1Short Answer Type SolutionsAns. 1 : Value Points :

Built a machan for her, herded an old tiger towards it, tied a goat under it, shot at the dead tiger when it died of heart attack. (CBSE Marking Scheme, 2015) 2

Detailed Answer : Mrs. Packletide announced a reward of one thousand rupees for the villagers to make

arrangements for the tiger hunt. The villagers were very happy and helped her in all possible ways. They built a platform for her on a tree and placed a goat as bait for the old tiger which they had herded towards it. They posted boys at the outskirts so that the tiger could not get away from that place. Their joy knew no bounds when the tiger died. They carried the good news to the village also to announce its death. 2

Ans. 2 : Value Points : The tiger had become weak, and could not hunt a big animal.

(CBSE Marking Scheme, 2016) 2

Detailed Answer : The tiger had become weak. He could not hunt big animals so he confined his activities to

eating small, domestic animals. This was the reason for the tiger shifting to the village. 2Ans. 3 : They were worried that the weak, old tiger might die before the arrival of the fixed date for

the shooting and that they would not be able to earn a handsome amount of money. 2Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Mrs. Packletide fired the shot, it hit the goat and not the tiger. But both the goat and the

tiger died, the goat from the bullet wound and the tiger due to the sound of bullet. He died perhaps of heart-failure. Miss Mebbin was the first one to note this and she told the same to Mrs. Packletide. Miss Mebbin was a very shrewd and calculative lady. She had made up her mind to blackmail Mrs. Packletide as she knew that the lady would not like anyone else to know that the tiger had died a natural death and not because of her bullet. Mrs. Packletide bought a cottage for Miss Mebbin to ensure that she kept quiet about all this. 8

WORKSHEET-65Extract Based SolutionsAns. 1 : (a) Mrs. Packletide wished to shoot a tiger and get her pictures published. 1 (b) This was in order to prove herself superior to Loona Bimberton who had recently

obtained a tiger-skin and couldn’t stop boasting about it. 1 (c) The goat had died of the gunshot. The tiger had merely died of a heart failure caused by

the sound of the gun shot. 1 (d) Louisa Mebbin blackmailed Mrs. Packletide into buying her the weekend cottage or

else she would tell Loona Bimberton that it was not the tiger but a mere goat that Mrs. Packletide had shot. 1

Ans. 2 : (a) Miss Mebbin is the speaker. 1 (b) Mrs. Packletide had shot the goat and not the tiger which had died of a heart-attack. 1 (c) Everyone would be amused as they thought that Mrs. Packletide had killed the tiger

while in reality she had actually shot the goat. 1 (d) Miss Mebbin’s plan was to blackmail Mrs. Packletide. 1Short Answer Type SolutionsAns. 1 : An old tiger was found for the tiger shoot. A platform was constructed on a tree and a goat

was placed there as bait. Mrs. Packletide waited on the platform with a rifle and a pack of cards. 2

Ans. 2 : Miss Mebbin was a paid companion to Mrs. Packletide. She was not devoted to her at all. She only pretended to had a protective elder sister-like attitude towards money and had come to be the companion during the hunting of tiger. 2

Ans. 3 : Jealous of Loona Bimberton, Mrs. Packletide decided to hunt a tiger and send a tiger-claw brooch to Loona Bimberton on her birthday. Since she was not a good hunter, she wanted the hunting to occur without any risk. So, she paid one thousand rupees to the villagers to make arrangements for tiger hunt like finding an old tiger and not letting it run away from that place. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Saturday 9 February 20×× 10 p.m. Dear Diary, I had an enjoyable day today as I participated in Mrs. Packletide’s hunting expedition. I

was very happy to get a large sum of money which would make many of my dreams come true. Mrs. Packletide paid a lot of money to all of us just for the sake of her false ego. She just wanted to show off that she was better than her friend Miss Loona Bimberton but all this was wrong. Just to satisfy her ego she had killed a tiger and distributed money among villagers for making her efforts a success. I wish she had spent this money on feeding some poor children or she had gone to some orphanage to help those poor children. It is strange that there are some people who don’t have food to eat and there are others who throw money just to flaunt. This extravagant display of wealth and money for some is rather disgusting. The money should have been spent for a noble cause. 8

Ans. 2 : Value Points : Old and lonely, no happiness, desperately longed for a letter from his daughter. People insulted and ridiculed him. (CBSE Marking Scheme, 2014) 2

Detailed Answer : Ali was an old man who lived a life of loneliness. There was no happiness in his life. His

only daughter had shifted to Punjab after getting married and he desperately longed for a letter from her. People at the post-office insulted him, and ridiculed him but he paid no attention to them. He only wanted a letter from his daughter. It seemed that the only aim of his existence was to get a letter from his daughter which came only after his death. He didn’t receive it while he was alive and thus led a cheerless life.

Ans. 3 : Value Points : Hoping to receive a letter from his daughter Miriam, Ali regularly went to the post office every day as if it was a religious duty. It shows Ali’s deep love and affection for his only daughter. (CBSE Marking Scheme, 2016) 2

Detailed Answer : Ali went to the post office daily in the hope of receiving a letter from his daughter Miriam.

Detailed Answer : XYZ City 20 April 20×× Dear Miriam, I am surprised at the change in myself after you left. I had never known the meaning of love

and separation. All my life I had enjoyed hunting but never realized the pain of separation. It was only after you left me that I realized what pain, love and separation are. I now repent when I realize that I was the cause of separating young animals from their parents. I killed many animals and was punished by being paid in the same coin. Now I’ve been separated from you. I’m dying to hear from you but there is no response from your end. I have realized that I should never have killed all those animals. It was bad on my part. I committed a sin and am paying for it heavily. The punishment for my sin is that I’ve been separated from you. I want to meet you, be with you but I can’t. I think this is a just punishment for me. I should never have killed animals. I hope that God will accept my repentance and will forgive me.

Yours affectionately, Ali 8

Detailed Answer : Ali was a skilled hunter. No animal could escape his eyes. The moment he saw any rabbit

or partridge it was as good as in his bag. But then suddenly his life changed. His daughter Miriam got married to a soldier and went to live in Punjab with him. Ali got no news of her after that. He became sensitive and realized the meaning of love and separation. He could no longer enjoy a sportman’s pleasure because he felt that the animals and birds must also have the same feelings and he stopped hunting. He could understand the grief of the parents of the hunted animals, the pain they went through after getting separated from their young ones. 2

Ans. 2 : Ali went to the post-office daily. He was the first one to be there, people knew him and laughed at him, called out his name and enjoyed seeing him jump. 2

Ans. 3 : Ali had been a hunter earlier. He had one daughter who got married to a soldier and left Ali. There was no news of her for five years. Ali became lonely and suffered from the pangs of love and separation. He gave up hunting. He always expected a letter from his daughter Miriam and regularly went to the post-office to look for her letter. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : 15 September 20×× 10 p.m. Dear Diary, After meeting Lakshmi Das and giving him five golden guineas, I am feeling relieved now.

I only wish that he will deliver Miriam’s letter at my grave. What a miserable life I have led for the last five years.

Being a staunch lover of humanity, I realised that the whole universe is made up of love and the grief of separation is inescapable. After the marriage of my daughter Miriam, I have realized what separation is. I have not got any letter from her for the past five years.

I wanted to tell her and show her that I have changed. I have left hunting since the day of her marriage. I wanted to tell her how much I love her. So, I became a routine visitor to the post-office in order to receive news of my own daughter, though I was called names like ‘pest’, ‘mad person’, etc. But I never minded and waited for the letter. The postmen made fun of me. The postmaster scolded me but I still had hope for the letter. A father’s heart will always miss his daughter, even though I was always humiliated by everyone in the post-office.

Now, I sense my last days are approaching. I have given five golden guineas to the clerk Laxmi Das and requested him to put my letter on my grave when it arrives. Ultimately, I have to leave for my heavenly abode believing that the letter will come, though after my death.

May God bless you Miriam. 8

realized how sad life was and he gave up hunting. His only aim in life now was coming to the post-office like a pilgrimage and in the hope of collecting his letter. 2

Ans. 2 : Ali is not a pest. Though Ali comes daily to the post-office; he waits there patiently without disturbing anyone. Hope lures him to the door whenever the post-office employees jokingly call out his name. But he does not rebuke them. He silently goes and sits on his seat without bothering or troubling anyone. 2

Ans. 3 : Ali gave him five golden coins and told him that his death was very near. He had neither seen Miriam nor had he received her letter. He told the clerk to keep Miriam’s letter, when it came, on his grave. (CBSE Marking Scheme, 2016) 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Value Points :

Life is often a reflection of one’s own deeds. God renders us according to our deeds. Ali realized the meaning of separation only when his daughter left him; earlier he didn’t have time for her. Postmaster never understood Ali’s agony and made fun of him. -He too had to face the consequences when he had to wait to get the news of his ailing daughter. 8

Detailed Answer : There is no denying the fact that life is often a reflection of one’s own deeds. God renders

us according to our deeds. We have to believe in the Karma theory and The Letter is a good example of this theory. Ali, a skillful hunter did not know the meaning of grief and separation until he himself was separated from his daughter Miriam who left him after getting married. Earlier he did not have time for her as he was busy hunting animals but after his daughter left, he used to go to the post office and sit there from morning till night, waiting for a letter from her. The postmaster always made fun of this habit of Ali. He never paid much attention to the emotions and feelings of Ali. He never understood Ali’s agony.

But a day came when the postmaster had to face the same consequences when he had to go wait to get the news of his ailing daughter. He understood how difficult it was to wait day after day for something which never came. He realized that letters were not mere postcards or envelopes, they were much more than that. 8

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Qualities of a Leader The word ‘Leader’ itself clears its meaning telling us that a person who can lead others is

a leader. But can everyone be a leader ? The answer is in negative. A leader must possess a few qualities. No one follows the leader blindly. The first and foremost quality of a leader is optimism. A person who is optimistic can always lead his team towards success. He can fill his co-mates with enthusiasm and dedication towards work and lead them gradually to the path of success. A leader must be just also. He should be unbiased and impartial like a mirror. He should tell others about their shortcomings also so that they can come up with more perfection. A leader’s vision of his goal is another quality which makes him a successful person. His goals and aspirations should be very clear to him so that no one can lead him astray from his path. Last and not the least, the leader must be committed towards his goal and should be empathetic towards his teammates. The co-operation of his team can only be achieved if he has all those qualities. 8

talent. Her only fault is that she is trusting and unsuspecting. She is misled by the evil frog who only wishes her ill. Her chief shortcoming is credulity. 2

Detailed Answer : People have become self-centred these days. They do not care about the feelings of others,

rather they take advantage of the ignorance and innocence of others. The same is depicted in the poem ‘The Frog and The Nightingale’. The frog has been shown as a greedy, cunning creature who grew envious of the growing popularity of the nightingale who was an innocent bird. He talked to her in a sweet manner in the beginning and convinced her to take vocal training from him so as to achieve perfection. The nightingale was ignorant of his cleverness. She was swept away by his false appreciation and in the desire to become a famous singer, kept on following the instructions of the frog. The frog dominated her so much so that the nightingale didn’t use her reasoning. She followed him blindly and died in the end. It was wrong on the part of the frog. This is a true picture of our society also where moral values are declining. People feel that nobody will understand their intentions so they exploit the ignorant and the innocent. But they forget that a supreme power is watching over them. They repent in the end. One must realise that we should respect the feelings of others and not use them for our benefit. 8

song was melodious. Her lack of confidence made her believe the frog, the frog critiqued her original song and therefore, it is ironical when at the end he remarks that ‘your song must be your own’. 2

Ans. 2 : The nightingale was foolish as she fell prey to the frog’s words. She tried to imitate him which resulted in her losing her beautiful voice and in the end she died. 2

Ans. 3 : The aim of the frog was to maintain his supremacy in the bog. He earned a lot of money at the expense of the nightingale and wanted to make her realize that the bog belonged to him and not to anyone else. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : The frog was a hated singer in the bog. He had a rough voice and the creatures living in the

bog loathed his voice, still he kept on singing. But with the arrival of the nightingale the situation changed. His position was challenged. So, he posed as a great singer and offered to teach the nightingale. The nightingale, being foolish, accepted him as her teacher and tried to imitate his voice. With the result, her own voice became hoarse and uninspired. Other creatures also became tired of listening to her song. At this, the frog scolded her. In order to please the frog, she rehearsed a lot which ended in her bursting a vein and she died. 8

WORKSHEET-80Extract Based SolutionsAns. 1 : (a) The frog’s income from the sale of tickets had come down. 1 (b) Intelligent. 1 (c) She died because of the bursting of her vein. 1 (d) Follow fashion. 1Ans. 2 : (a) The nightingale. 1 (b) That one should be original. 1 (c) Flamboyant confidence of style or manner. 1 (d) The frog and the Nightingale. 1Short Answer Type SolutionsAns. 1 : The audience in the poem are the creatures of the bog. They rejoice at the sweet and

melodious songs of the nightingale. They praise her for it. She is highly impressed by the same and exerts herself to amuse them and this overexertion leads to her tragic fate. 2

Ans. 2 : The frog as depicted in the poem is very clever and shrewd. He represents people who are manipulative. He exploits the nightingale to get rid of his rival as he had assessed the bird’s nature very well. He himself has no talent. 2

Ans. 3 : The poet wants to convey the message that one shouId exercise one’s individuality and reasoning, without letting others lead one blindly. One should realise one’s limitations and not let others exploit them. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : It is said that one should sing one’s own song. Had it been the case with the nightingale in

the poem ‘The Frog and the Nightingale’, she would not have died. She was timid and lacked self-confidence. That was why she invited the frog’s comments

about her song. This was the chance where the frog could trap her. He offered to impart her training for proper singing. Being innocent she did not suspect the frog’s evil designs of killing her by making her sing continuously and even in bad weather that too without proper rest. The frog exploited her and overexerted her. She obeyed his commands innocently and did not think that her song was better than his.

Ultimately, the frog succeeded in killing her and criticized her as a stupid creature who was nervous, tense and prone to influence and said that she should have known that she must sing her own song. 8

Detailed Answer : 463, ABC Street London 14th May 20×× Dear Pam, You were the first one to enter my thoughts when I wanted to share with someone my

fear of ageing. I shudder at my reflection in the mirror. I do not want to believe that I am growing old with each passing day. I am losing my beauty and moving towards old age and that scares me. I want to look magnificent and as gorgeous as ever. This ageing process is scaring the wits out of me. The thought of growing old is killing me. I feel that I am losing my charm and brilliance which is not acceptable to me. I know that this is the reality of life and I should not be thinking this way, but somehow I am unable to cope up with the thoughts of getting old. I feel dejected and frustrated. Is this dejection and frustration universal ? Do you also feel the same way ? Are you also scared of getting old ?

Please help me to come out of this situation. I am concerned and don’t want to get affected in such a terrifying manner.

Yours sincerely, Sylvia 8

Ans. 3 : Value Points : The woman does not like the blemishes which the mirror shows her and turns away to those liars, the candles or the moon. (CBSE Marking Scheme, 2015) 2

Detailed Answer : The woman does not like the mirror because it shows her, her blemishes and makes her

realise that she’s ageing and that she is not pretty anymore. She turns away from the mirror to the candles or the moon which show her a false image and don’t make her realise that she has lost her youth and beauty. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : 31st March, Friday 9 p.m. Dear Diary Today, I was just wondering about how I spend my whole day. I realised that most of the

time I meditate on the opposite wall. It is only the faces and darkness that separate us. Every morning, a lady bends over me to know what she really is but when I reflect her image faithfully, she is upset and agitated. She feels so because she sees her exact image of an ageing woman. I am exact. I have no preconceptions. I reflect the image in an unbiased way as I am unmisted by love or dislike. That’s why the woman feels agitated. But I am happy with myself as I show people how and what they exactly are. 8

Short Answer Type SolutionsAns. 1 : Value Points :

The woman searches for her lost beauty in the lake and mirror-her lost young age.(CBSE Marking Scheme, 2014) 2

Detailed Answer : The woman stands in front of the mirror everyday and searches for her lost beauty in the

lake and the mirror. She feels agitated at the loss of her young age as she’s not able to accept the reality of her lost youth. 2

Ans. 2 : ‘Terrible fish’ symbolizes the wrinkled, old face of the woman which has lost its youth and beauty. She can’t come to terms with her change. Only the mirror makes her realise that she is no longer young and beautiful. She feels agitated and behaves like a terrible fish. The poetic device used here is the metaphor. 2

Ans. 3 : The mirror describes itself as silver-coloured and exact. It has no preconceived notions and is not affected by love, hate or other emotions. It is objective and unbiased, the woman, who bends over it can see what she really is as the mirror doesn’t lie or deceive like candles or the moon. It indulges in human activities it ‘sees’, ‘swallows’, ‘mediates’ and ‘thinks’. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : ‘The Mirror’ is a perfect example of personification. The poet has successfully endowed

human qualities onto the mirror. The mirror tells us about itself ‘I am exact’. It has no prejudices or preconceptions in its mind. It shows images as they are reflected in it. The whole day, it meditates on the opposite wall which is pink and speckled. It is unmisted and when the lady looks into the mirror, she gets agitated and is upset at seeing her ageing image. Thus, Sylvia Plath has effectively used personification in this poem. 8

C. NOT MARBLE NOR THE GILDED MONUMENTS

Monuments are not permanent, not eternal with the passage of time they crumble in the event of a war, gunshots demolish them. (CBSE Marking Scheme, 2015) 2

Detailed Answer : The monuments erected by kings and princes are not permanent or eternal. They get

destroyed or are crumbled in the event of a war as gunshots demolish them. They are discoloured or broken by the passage of time. Both time and war demolish them and they are forgotten by people. 2

Ans. 2 : Time leaves its marks on everything as everything in this world is mortal. None can fight time. Monuments and statues break and get dirty with the passage of time. They also get demolished during wars. 2

P-57S O L U T I O N S

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Value Points :

l everything comes to an end one dayl what is most important is our relationship with our dear ones.l the poet strengthens this idea that riches don’t matterl what is more valuable is his love for his friend. 8

Detailed Answer : It is a well-known truth that materialistic things don’t really last. All signs of worldly

power, glory and grandeur fade away with the passage of time. Kings and Princes get their monuments erected so as to be remembered by the future generations. But all gold-plated monuments, memorials and statues eventually fall into utter neglect, decay and deterioration. They all meet the dust as they fail to outlive the ravages of time. In stark contrast to this are our relationships. They are immortal. They don’t get destroyed by time. Rather they are strengthened with the passage of time. The poet is also of the opinion that riches don’t matter much in this world. What is more valuable is his love for his friend. Their love will live longer than any man-made monuments. Neither death nor war will be able to destroy his memory. Hence, it is our love and relationships which matter the most in this world. All other things come to an end one day. 8

broken or destroyed by anything be it time or wasteful wars whereas, all the other things will get destroyed with the passage of time. 2

Ans. 2 : The poet has glorified poetry in his poem as poetry makes a man immortal which cannot be done by any other thing. Statues and monuments erected in the rememberance of kings and rulers get destroyed by time. But his poem will outlive all these and will be a written record. It will immortalize his friend. No force of nature can destroy it. 2

His friend will be eternalized through his verses as wars and forces of nature can’t affect it. He will outshine all others through his poems. 2

Dear Archit,

Yesterday, I read a beautiful poem written by Shakespeare, ‘Not Marble, Nor the Gilded Monuments’. It is a sonnet which has fourteen lines. It highlights the smallness of our existence, our achievements and our false glory. After reading the poem, I realised that ‘art’ is immortal whereas, ‘time’ is very powerful. It leaves its marks on everything. Nobody can fight time. The poem has left a deep imprint on my mind. I have developed a great interest in poetry and will try to read some more poems.

P-59S O L U T I O N S

Detailed Answer : The shattered visage in the poem ‘Ozymandias’ belongs to the King Ozymandias. He had

a frowning expression on his face which reflected his scornful and contemptuous nature. It was half-sunk because it had been ravaged by time which spares no one. whether rich or poor. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Value Points

Irony : nothing left to show his greatness, trunkless legs remained in the wilderness forgotten by peopleLesson : wealth, power and position do not last forever time, it is the ultimate leveler / time conquers all 8

Detailed Answer : Ozymandias was a cruel and arrogant king who got his statue erected so that people would

remember him even after his death. But with the passage of time, the condition of the statute became piteous, it was completely shattered. There were only the trunkless legs which remained in the wildness and nothing else was these which could show the greatness of Ozymandias, ‘the king of kings’. It is ironical that a person who was so powerful and who looked down upon others was reduced to a trunkless statue.

The poem leaves a message that wealth, power and position do not last forever. So they should be used for the welfare of mankind and should not be misused. Time is the ultimate lever. One must realize that respect is never demanded. Real power is in winning hearts and not in ruling the weak and the needy. Time conquers all, so if one wins the hearts of people it is the real victory. 8

Detailed Answer : The ‘hand’ referred to in these lines is the sculptor’s hand who carved out the statue so

skilfully that the expression of contempt, a cold sneer and arrogance were clearly shown. It was a good imitation, representing the king’s feelings. The hand of the sculptor seemed to be mocking the king’s self-obsession and passion. 2

Ans. 3 : On the pedestal of the statue the words inscribed were, “My name is Ozymandias, I am the king of kings. If anyone wishes to know how great I am, then let him surpass my works.” These words indicate the conceit and arrogance of the king. The king appeared to sneer at people who were weak and helpless. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Value Points

Power and glory short-lived/transitory, power and glory is deceptive/Ozymandias got his statue built in order to be remembered by posterity but his statue lies shattered/ broken, time kills/ destroys physical glory, power or riches. 8

Detailed Answer : Arrogance does not assure immortality and durability against all powerful time and nature.

The poem highlights the vanity of human glory and power. Everything in the world perishes with the passage of time and under the powerful influence of the elements of nature. Even the mightiest of the mighty becomes one with the dust. No trace of them is left on the sands of time. Ozymandias, a powerful king of Egypt was proud of his glory and achievements. He desired to immortalize his name and got a statue built. But nothing could stand against time and the powerful elements of nature. The broken statue symbolizes the destruction caused by time and the sands, lone, boundless and bare symbolize the power of the elements. 8

Detailed Answer : The condition of the statue and the inscription on the pedestal are ironical. The statue was

completely shattered. Only two legs stood on the pedestal and the head was lying in the sand. Whereas, the inscription said ‘look upon my work, ye Mighty and despair’, and ‘king of kings’. Such a mighty and powerful king who looked down upon everyone else, was destroyed. It conveys that nothing is stable in this world; everything is subject to change and decay. Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Friday, 18th August 2015, 10-30 p.m., Dear Diary, I visited the land where my relative Ozymandias had got his statue carved out to immortalize

He had his statue carved out so that people would remember him even after his death. But what I saw there was only a broken statue as if it was making fun of human pretensions. It was conveying the fact that man is mortal and time is all powerful. No one can beat time. It spares none. The man who was so powerful and always thought of others as inferior was lying in the sand of course, it was his statue but still, time had defeated him, making everyone realise that pride hath a fall. 8

Detailed Answer : When the sailors set sail, everything was favourable. The crew was given a warm farewell.

The ship was sailing towards the south, so the sun appeared to be rising from the sea. It shone brightly and sank the same way. Several days out at the sea, a very fierce storm lashed the ship with force and drove it towards the south. The masts of the ship were bent and its prow dipped in the sea. It looked like a person with his bent head before an enemy. The ship reached the region of mists and ice with icebergs, and snow-clapped cliffs all around. The place was totally deserted. Then an Albatross appeared through the fog. The Mariners were greatly relieved at the sight of the bird because they had not seen any living being for many days. They called the Albatross, a Christian soul; because after the arrival of the bird the ice split and a good wind sprang up behind them. hand, all the Mariners regarded the Albatross as a Christian soul as he had taken them out of the land of ice and snow. After the killing of Albatross, the mariners had to undergo a lot of suffering. They got stuck in the silent sea where there was misery all around. They were thirsty but had no water to drink. They were physically and mentally exhausted. Thus they got angry with the Ancient Mariners. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : After the death of the Albatross, the weather became unfavorable for the Mariners to

continue their journey. As the ship sailed into the ‘silent sea’, the breeze dropped down, making the sails drop down as well. The ship came to a standstill. The wind died, the sun intensified and there was not a drop of water to drink. Despite being surrounded by water, their tongues and throats were parched at the root with thirst. The ocean became “revolting”, “rotting” and “thrashing” with “slimy” creatures and sizzling with strange fires. The condition of the Mariners turned out to be very pathetic and frightening. They were extremely dismayed at being stuck in between the silent sea. They spoke to each other only to break the silence of the sea. 8

Detailed Answer : The Ancient Mariner had killed the harmless Albatross for no reason. The others blamed

him for the sufferings which they were undergoing. They were of the opinion that it was all due to the killing of the bird. So they hung the Albatross around the Mariners’ neck as a mark of punishment and a constant reminder of the sinful deed which he had committed. They also wanted him to feel guilty for that deed. 2

Detailed Answer : There are many examples of the use of supernatural in ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariners’.

To start with, the guest was not ready to listen to the story of the Ancient Mariner but his glittering eyes had a hyponotic effect on the guest and he listened to the story like a three year old’ child. Then they were stuck in the storm. There was no way to move forward but suddenly an Albatross arrived out of nowhere and guided the ship. 2

Ans. 3 : The sailors are very fickle-minded. First they welcomed the Albatross and considered him as a blessing and a good omen, which had caused the ice to split and the breeze to blow. Later they think that the Albatross was responsible for the coming of the fog and mist. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : The Ancient Mariner had shot the Albatross in a fit of instinct. After the death of the

Albatross, the weather became unfavourable for them to continue their journey. The wind died, the sun intensified and there was no rain. The ocean became “revolting”, “rotting” and “thrashing” with “slimy” creatures. The condition of the Mariners turned out to be very pathetic. The Mariners felt that the absence of the Albatross was the reason for their suffering. They wanted to make him suffer for his crime as he had killed the bird that brought the wind and broke the ice. All eyes turned to him accusingly and the dead Albatross was hung round his neck in place of the holy cross round his neck as a cursed reminder, so that the thought could plague him for the rest of his life. 8

Detailed Answer : Friday 19 July 20XX, 11 pm Dear Diary, I had a strange experience in the morning when I went to fill my pitcher with water. I saw

a snake drinking water from the trough. I felt honoured at his presence. I was fascinated by him and let him drink water. I stood and waited like a second comer.

The ‘voice of education’ provoked me to kill the snake as it was golden and poisonous. But my inner conscience pricked me that the snake had come as a guest and so should not be killed. Suddenly I saw the snake going back. I picked up a log and threw it the retracting snake. The snake twisted but disappeared into a hole in the ground.

I am filled with guilt and regret at the act of throwing the log. A feelling of remorse is overpowering me, I should not have done that because the snake had shown no intention to harm me.

Good night, Diary. 8

Detailed Answer : Respected Principal Ma’am, worthy teachers and dear friends. Today I’ve got the golden

opportunity to express my views on the topic ‘Snakes - a beautiful creation of God, an object of our love and not hatred.’ We all know that we share the earth with fellow human beings, plants and animals as well, so we have no right to kill any animal. A snake is a graceful and majestic looking animal. Some people think that some snakes are poisonous and so they should be killed. But this is a wrong notion. We should have respect for these creatures and believe in the principle of peaceful co-existence. It is our moral duty to respect and protect the rights of the other creatures. We should co-exist in harmony with other creatures and not tamper with ecology which has been carefully planned and laid out by nature. We must realize that snakes are a beautiful creation of God. They are an object of our love and not hatred. 8

Must go by the voice of conscience, must have mutual respect, belief in peaceful co-existence necessary for survival, has no right to harm other forms of life, must believe in ‘live and let live.’ (any other relevant point) 8

Detailed Answer : The poem, ‘Snake’ reminds us of the fact that animals too have a right to life which we have

no right to deny them. One should always listen to the voice of conscience that does not allow us to play with these brainless and innocent creatures.Man cannot afford to tamper with ecology as it has been carefully planned and laid out by nature and it may result in the extinction of wild animals and in the depletion of forests and their wealth. Further man will have to face dire consequences like landslides, floods , droughts and famines if he harms the ecological balance. Nature has supplied the living creatures with abundant resources and man in particular has been able to co-exist with the least discomfort. So it is our moral duty to have mutual respect for these creatures and believe in the principle of Peaceful Co-existence. 8

Brutus’ love for Rome was greater than his love for Caesar - he believed that Caesar was ambitious. [CBSE Marking Scheme, 2016] 2

Detailed Answer :

Brutus was Caesar’s friend. He had a great Republican zeal, noble idealism and he was a great moralist. He was the champion of public liberty and freedom. But he was not a good judge of psychology. He got misled by the conniving nature of the conspirators and joined them to kill Caesar because of his love for the liberty and bright future of the Rome. He believed that Caesar was ambitious and that he would make the Romans slaves if he was allowed to live. Thus he killed him. 2

He reinterprets the dream as fair and fortunate. He also tells Caesar that the Senators have planned to offer him the crown. If he does not go to the Senate, they might change their minds on crowing him king that day. 2

Detailed Answer :

Caesar’s will was read by Antony. He told the mob that Caesar had left 75 drachmans to every Roman. He also read that the private gardens and orchards on the banks of the river Tiber were open to the public for rest and recreation. This was open not only for the mob but also for their heirs / future generation also. 2

Long Answer Type SolutionAns. 1 : Yes, I agree with Brutus when he says the given statement to justify his reasons for

assassinating Caesar. Brutus was a patriotic man. To him, the safety of the Romans was more important than anything else. His sole reason for joining the conspiracy was that he thought Rome would be ruined if Caesar was crowned. He had no personal grudges against Caesar; rather, he loved him dearly. But he sacrificed his love for Caesar to save his countrymen. The following lines spoken by Brutus prove this – “As Caesar loved me, I weep for him; as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant, I honour him: but, as he was ambitious, I slew him.”

Brutus also says at the end of his speech, “— as I slew my best lover for the good of Rome, I have the same dagger for myself, when it shall please my country to need my death.”

When Brutus says, “Not that I love Caesar less, but I loved Rome more.”, he displays idealism and nobility. 8

l Mark Antony touched the hearts of the people. l Proved to the mob that Caesar was not ambitious. l Exposed the wounded body of Caesar - showed them the stab wounds made by the conspirators. l He aroused their curiosity by repeatedly hinting at Caesar’s will. l Said that Caesar loved them and made the Romans his heirs. l His words were so powerful that the crowd turned against the conspirators. 2 × 4 = 8 (Any four points)

Detailed Answer : Mark Antony is a clever statesman and a good friend of Caesar. He is foresighted enough

to judge that Brutus is a famous public figure and has already won the approval of the plebeians, instead of the censure, after killing Caesar. Now it is upto him to turn the tide, which threatens to flow on the side of the conspirators. Antony proves to be strong in all the ways Brutus proves to be weak. His impulsive, improvisatory nature serves him perfectly to persuade the conspirators that he is on their side, thus gaining leniency. Throughout his speech, he keeps repeating, ‘Brutus is an honouable man.’ “I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him,” whereas he does just the opposite. He is able to persuade the plebeians of the

P-75S O L U T I O N S

conspirators’ injustice and gains mass support. He contradicts the charges of Brutus that Caesar was ambitious by pointing out that Caesar had refused the crown thrice, had filled the coffers of Rome and wept for all Romans. Not too scrupulous to stoop to deceit and duplicity, as Brutus claims to be, Antony proves himself to be a consummate politician, using gestures and rhetoric to his advantage. He graphically displays all the stabs, Brutus and others have inflicted on Caesar’s body and uses Caesar’s body to exploit the plebeians emotionally. He responds to subtle cues, tailors his words very deftly and uses the most appropriate actions to incite the people. He deliberately thrusts the words ‘mutiny’ and ‘riot’ at them and gets the desired results.

Unlike Brutus, who prides himself on solely acting with respect to virtue and blinding himself to his personal concerns. Antony never separates his private affairs from his public actions. So Antony’s eulogy at Caesar’s funeral is a master-stroke, and the mention of Caesar’s will that leaves money and his property to all Romans, acts as the final nail in the coffin of the conspirators. So, Antony’s speech is a combination of wit, irony, sarcasm, pathos and satire. 8

l Lost her dearest friend, Mr. Anagnos of the Perkins Institute for the blind.

[CBSE Marking Scheme, 2016] 10

Detailed Answer : When Helen was summoned by the investigative body to answer on the charges of

plagiarism, she was very distressed. In the beginning, she pleaded innocence and assured that she could not recall Miss Canby’s The Frost Fairies’ being read out to her. Miss Sullivan also had not even heard of the book called ‘Birdie and his Friends.’ Later, it was found that Ms. Sophie had read many books to Helen in Anne’s absence. Whereas, Mr. Anagnos thought that Helen and Miss Sullivan had copied someone else’s stories to impress him.

She found that irrespective of her explanations, the committee had already decided that Helen had copied ‘The Frost King’ from Miss Margaret T. Canby’s ‘Frost Fairies’. This had frightened Keller so much that she refused to resume writing. Even while writing letters to her mother, she would double-check them to ensure that each and every word or expression was her own creation. She was very upset and got many consolations. Even Miss Canby kindly sent her a letter. But still this was a black cloud in Helen’s garden of childhood.

This incident shook Helen’s confidence. It demotivated her and left her demoralised. It was at this stage that Miss Anne Sulivan came to her rescue again. She consoled and helped restore her self-confidence. Miss Sullivan persuaded her to write for the Youth’s Companion—a brief account of her life. Helen did so hesitatingly. But this incident made her lose her dearest friend Mr. Anagnos also because Helen had dedicated her book to him on his birthday, but he never stood by her throughout the court activities. 10

She had to study mathematics without the needed tools. The classes were larger and it was not possible for the Cambridge teachers to give her special instructions. Anne Sullivan had to read all the books to her. Helen had to wait in order to buy a Braille writer so that she could do her algebra, geometry and physics. When the embossed books and the other apparatus arrived, Helen’s difficulties began to disappear and she began to study with confidence. However, Mr. Gilman thought that Helen was overworked and was breaking down. He insisted that she was overworked, and that she should remain at his school three years longer. He made changes in her studies. A difference of opinion between Mr. Gilman and Miss Sullivan resulted in Helen’s mother withdrawing Helen and Mildred from the Cambridge school. Helen went on to continue her studies under a tutor. She had constant rows with Margot and believed that her mother loved Margot, her elder sister, more than her. Anne didn’t like the eighth entrant Alfred Dussel as she had to share her room with him. She used to have series of arguments with him. Then, there was Mrs. van Daan who didn’t like Anne at all. She always blamed Mrs. Frank for not teaching anything to Anne Frank. This used to upset Anne and she always retaliated, thus getting a black mark against her. One night her mother told her to sing the prayer with her but she didn’t like the idea and refused. Her mother Mrs. Edith Frank, became upset and complained to her husband. Mr. Frank had to intervene to solve this problem and advised Anne to listen to her mother. 10

Detailed Answer : Before going into hiding Anne had a normal relationship with her mother. She would

tease her about her boyfriend. Even when they all went into hiding, her mother was very understanding. But gradually the misunderstandings started building up.

Anne’s relationship with her mother changed into a complex and complicated one. The complexities arose from the difference in disposition and temperament between the two and the complications stemmed from these complexities. Anne felt that she did not fit in with them, she saw her mother as being very sentimental and always trying to put up a picture of a family that got along well together without taking into account individual feelings which might be different than the one she imposed upon them. ideal mother who would support her emotionally. She felt that there was lack of sweetness and more of sacrcasm in her mother. Her accusations affected her so much that she did not confide in her. She never felt one with her mother. Anne was an independent spirit and could function in life without her mother’s support. We can look at it this way that her mother somewhat knew about this and in order to retain the parent child relationship, she treated Anne like a child because it is hard for a parent to come to terms with a child who doesn’t need a parent to live life, who is capable of taking care of herself they are, so her mother did not understand that and continued to flow the parents’ template of behaviour. Fact of the matter, is every child is different and there are no rules when it comes to bringing up a child. So there seems to have been a gap in communication from both sides and this led to a difference of understanding between mother and daughter. However, as Anne grew up, she forgave her mother for her failure and decided to be more considerate towards her.

Anne’s parents had to migrate to Holland in 1933. The Frank sisters had to leave their Montessori school, were ordered to study in Jewish schools, father had to sell his business.

(CBSE Marking Scheme, 2015) 10

Detailed Answer : Anne was a courageous Jewish girl. She lived in Frankfurt with her family till she was four

years old. Then her parents immigrated to Holland in 1933 and she was sent to stay with her grandmother. Her sister Margot also stayed back with their grandmother. They were both sent to Montessori school and received their education there till Anne was six. But due to anti-Jewish commandments, Anne was sent to a Jewish Lyceum and she had to leave the Montessori school. Anne did not like it and there were tears in her eyes as well as in the eyes of Mrs. Kupercus, the principal of the Montessori school. Then came the anti-Jewish laws by Hitler which set the trigger for the sufferings and problems suffered by Jews. These decrees restricted the freedom of Jews. They were required to wear a yellow star, forbidden to use street cars, they could not even own or ride them. They were supposed to shop between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Thus, we can see that Anne faced ‘racism’ at many junctures of life but the final blow came when they received the call-up notice. Her father immediately decided to go into hiding. They had to walk in the pouring rain to reach the secret annexe-their hiding place. The living conditions were poor in the annexe but they had no other option and stayed in hiding till the end. 10

Ans. 2 : The inhabitants of the secret annexe continued to have squabbles and heartburns on one or the other matter. Mr. and Mrs. van Daan quarrelled loudly and nastily. Mrs. van Daan was a disagreeable woman who frequently complained something or the other about Anne. She had a row with Mr. Frank only because she found the Franks using her china instead of their own. Anne’s mother and Mrs. van Daan did not get along well, no harmony existed in Anne’s family too. Dr. Dussel proved to be a very stingy, selfish and mean man, denied Anne the use of a table and he continued to violate the laws of the annexe thus, risking his and others’ lives. Dr. Dussel was a selfish man who never bothered about others. He was an irresponsible person. The Franks also were not a happy family. Anne always thought that her parents loved Margot more than her so she never paid any respect to her mother. With the result that the atmosphere in the annexe was not friendly. WORKSHEET-115Ans. 1 : Anne’s fountain pen was one of her most prized possessions which she valued highly. It

had a thick nib and had led a long and interesting fountain pen life. The fountain pen packed, in cotton, had arrived all the way from Aachen in a red leather case. She liked it the moment she received it as she felt herself to be the proud owner of a fountain pen. To her good luck, she was allowed to take the pen to school and even her teachers let her use it in the class. She was provided with a new case for the pen at the age of twelve. She liked the pen so much that she took it with her even to the annexe. The pen had raced through countless diaries and compositions. But one day, when she swept the floor after rubbing beans she accidentally threw it into the stove and found the remains in the morning. At first she was very sad but later she was happy that at least it was cremated just as she would be one day. 10

Ans. 2 : Miep Gies was a close friend of the Franks, as she worked in Otto Frank’s company. Her husband Jan and she both helped the Franks a lot when they were preparing to shift to the secret annexe. She even baked cakes for them on special occasions. In other words, she turned out to be a good friend of the Franks who helped them in their hour of need. Miep often visited the secret annexe and brought the news from the outside and of course a breath of fresh air too whenever she came. Since Anne didn’t have any friend, she sometimes found a good friend in Miep. Miep always tried her best to make the situation of the persons hiding in the annexe a little more comfortable. 10

She read the biographies of Galileo, Galili and Franz Liszt. She was interested in reading the Bible and Greek and Roman mythology. She wanted to become a journalist.

Like any other child, she loved her parents but later developed a dislike for her mother as she used to compare her to Margot, her elder sister whom she felt jealous of. She always had a feeling that her father loved her more than her mother. Anne was an optimistic girl who learnt a lot from her sufferings. She always believed that a time would come when all their problems would be over and they would lead a happy, tension-free life after the war had ended. Anne had many friends but not a single one in whom she could confide. Thus, she made Kitty, her diary, her friend and gave way to all her feelings in it. Anne died of typhus in the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen in late February or early March of 1945.

Detailed Answer : Anne Frank was a shy girl but she was intelligent and perceptive. She had many friends but

could confide in none of them. She had to shift to the secret annexe along with her family members after the call-up notice. Thus, she spent her growing years in the shadow of the fear of being caught, the fear of going to concentration camps if caught and the fear of the consequences of the war. She always led a restricted life. She was an introvert who never shared her feelings with others, that’s why she considered Kitty - her diary as her friend and entered every minute detail of her life in her growing years. Her growing years were not very pleasant. She had to make adjustments in every step of her life whether it was the sharing of her room with Dussel or the sharp remarks of Mrs. van Daan. She always felt lonely. She considered herself to be a song bird without wings. She felt isolated from the world. She didn’t like to spend time with her mother as she always felt that her mother was closer to Margot, her sister than herself Anne. While staying in the secret annexe, she could not get an education. Life in the annexe made her believe that there could be no such things as truth, justice or God. That is why she was turning into a confused personality. 10

also loved to read books. Mr. Frank wanted that both Anne and Margot should read the Bible, especially the New Testament. Margot learnt shorthand during her stay at the annexe and learnt Latin also. She even translated Mr. Dussel’s letters in Latin before sending them which Mr. Frank disliked. He forbade her from doing it. Mr. Alfred Dussel also liked her and made it clear to Anne by saying that he would have shared the table with Margot if she had asked for it but definitely not Anne. At one stage, Margot felt herself attracted towards Peter but when she discovered that Anne was emotionally attached to him, she gracefully withdrew herself and told Anne so that she was not unhappy about it. But unfortunately, Margot too died at a young age in the concentration camp a few days before Anne died. 10

Anne always felt uncomfortable in her presence and regarded her as an imperfect mother. She longed for a mother who would understand her and love her as all other mothers do. Mrs. Frank was never seen participating much in the squabbles during their stay in the secret annexe.
