CHAGRIN FALLS HIGH SCHOOL. 400 EAST WASHINGTON. CHAGRIN FALLS, OHIO 44022. VOLUME 89.

"GhettoSuper tarthati whatyouar ..... " SMACK!! I hit the nooze button for the third time. Man, only three weeks into the school year, and I've already lo tall motivation to go. "Carroll, Get up! Your ride is here!" After finally getting up, I reached for the cleanest pair of jeans on the floor, and my favorite shirt. I grabbed a bagel and ran out the door. In spite of my frantic rushing, my ride Lewis, was late again. I paced back and forth, and then finally being five minute late already,! saw Lewis' White Rabbit VW pull up the driveway. "Lewi , You'reLate! You'relate!" "Don't worry about it, Carroll! We'll blame it on the con truction," hesaid, nonchalantly. "Hey good call, Lewi ! " On our way to school we passed the juniors breathle ly running to school. Man it sucks to be them, I thoughttomy elf. "Hey Lewi , turn your windshield wipers on. It's starting to pour." We pulled into the junior parking lot and hastily madethewettriptoourfir tperiodclas. It's Government with Mr. Johnson, where of course, for the millionth time we discussed the Clinton Scandals. I say "off with his head." Not only because he dragged our country through hell, but because the detail of his per onallife put me to sleep every morning. BRRRRRRRRRRRRING ............. The bell rang, waking me up to go to second period. "Yes, offtocomrnons!" I was really excited to do nothing for a whole period, but upon arriving, I remembered that there is no stereo in the Senior lounge, and after eating every breakfast sandwich, you have to cough up a hair ball. Well, too bad. I guess I'll be forced to actually do some homework ........... no, I thought, as I casually laughed to myself at that crazy notion. I'll just stare at the wall. Suddenly, aloud voicetookmeoutofmy trance. "Carroll!" "You have a detention for not signing into commons! "Mr . Gebler," I replied. "!talked to you for five minutes right when I came in. You know I'm here." "Carroll," he went on. "It doe n't matter. It's the principle behind the thing. I'm the advisor and I sign

2 opening

my elfintocommons. RulesareRules." I sighed, and signed myself into commons just as the bell rang for me to go to leave. I arrived at my third period class and I had a notice to see Mr. Goodwin ... IMMEDIATLEY. Irantothe office and waited in line as seven kids in front of me received a plethora of detentions, Saturday Schools, and suspensions. When it was finally my turn, Mr. Goodwin was demanding to know where I had been the period before. I took a deep breath and went through the story of how I forgot to ign in, and then already got a detention formymajortran gres ion. Hestemly gave me his usual speech, gave me another detention, and sent me on my way. I got back to class and Mr. Ricci was saying, "We will have a 100 point examination on what we went over in class today." After the bell rang, signaling the end of the

period, I tried to ask Mr. Ricci ifl could get the note or take the te t a day later, but Mr. Roberts came in the room, and they both took off laughing, leaving me alone to fend for myself. Therestofthedaywenton moderately problem-free, except for the time when on my way to eventh period, I had to go to the bathroom. The time between the cla es is very hort and the halls are alway overflowing with people, o I had to ru h. I

blindly ran into a stall, but was soon topped by a loud voice, "That's a fifth grade bathroom only! Your bathroom is on the bottom level." Rollingmyeye ,I etofftocovertwo taircase inthefifteen econd I had left. Unfortunately ,just as I reached the bathroom, the bell rang. My goal to relieve myself, was soon forgotten as now I had to concentrate on finding a pass to Lon char' Proband Stat cia . "Oh wait, I'll go to guidance". Finally the bell rang to ignal the end of school. An announcement sounded saying that, both the tudent council and the yearbook cla had a meeting tomorrow at7:00 am. I ironically belong to both of the e organizations. Looking ahead towards my long night of studying forte t I didn't know anything about, I started towards the office to erve one of my jug . It had to be at that exact econd that I would hear the voice of this guy I really liked, "Hey Carroll, Wanna go to the Metroparks and to around the fri bee fora while?" I dejectedly answered, "Sorry, I can't today." He went to ask someone else as I went to detention.

laking the first step in any endeavor is I always the most difficult part. Break

ing the surface, penetrating the outer shell, or coming through the looking glass into another realm, another level of reality, is crucial and impacting. To enter the realm of High School means shattering the barrier of appearance and waking up to the reality of growth and responsibility. Stepping into the world beyond the titles and accolades reveals the truth of determination during midnight study sessions, perseverance at morning practices, and dedication around the clock. Of course, all students eventually have to end their stay behind this side of the looking glass. Sooner or later, the time comes to checkout and venture out of this realm, to take a step towards another endeavor in another direction.

So as we take the giant plunge into a new millennium, a new century and a new lifestyle, we are asked to enjoy it, to have fun, try new things, and to never look back. There are things we will never forget here, no matter how far we go, or for how long we are gone. But the first chapter of our lives is ending and there is nothing holding us back from becoming self-actualized individuals. So, good luck Class of '99, and never stop buying M&M's, because we all might be lucky enough to win the $2,000,000 grand prize. After all, we are what the new millenium is all about!

Freshmen' lives are new exciting and not as focu ed around their studie, . ophomore year also follows along in this adolescent quest of ocial rather than acaclemeic learning. Then BOOM! Junior year hit you like a "bat out of hell." Wake up buddy, it's time to do omething with your life. As much a you try to ignore it, the circle goes around and before you knO\v it you'll be 60 years old and out rocking on your back porch wondering where all those years went. Depressing .. . maybe. Despite the fact that Chagrin Falls i a small town and there is not much around, the students at CFHS call it home and have no problem finding plenty to do. As soon as the bells ring on Friday afternoon and they walk out the doors, they become completely different people. As they drive out of the parking lot and head home or to work, the student are preparing themselves for the time ahead of them. On their free time, students have a chance to escape the pre sures of school and enjoy themselves with their friend . Although the town of Chagrin Falls may eem to be boring with little entertainment, the students make the most of what they can do in their surroundings. With sporting event year round, dances such as the Homecoming Dance and Winter Formal, and the famous Pumpkin Roll, the students at Chagrin Falls rarely live a dull moment. And in tho e moments in between, students find ways to spend that extra time. Junior, Jeff Wilson confe es that hi favorite thing to do in his free time is "party at Shoecrafts." Shelby Ro en likes to "Shop and hang out with my friends" on her free time. With all of the clubs, parties, and the many other things that are happening in Chagrin, Sophomore Jenna Koepf asks, "What' Free Time?" It is evident that, although Chagrin may be small in size, there is much students can find to in their Free Time, including senior aspirations of "reading Great Novels and studying Greek Literature." Unless you have been tuck on a de erted island, you had to have noticed the overwhelming amount of construction taking place throughout the chool district. Even though thi is a major improvement for the school, there are many downsides due to the burden of construction. For example, the mass amount of dust and dirt in and around our chool. The con truction is also the rea on that many senior have lost the privilege to park in their rightful lot. However, when asked about this problem, Dr. Axner said that it was a small price to pay," to be with such a great principal." The burden that has been laid upon our chool i physical a well as financial with a co t for building of 21.8 million dollars. It is not hard to miss the new addition of students to our school- the fifth grader . They are not a threat to the rest of the student body, they are actually very sweet, but some students have called them a nuisance. The whole reason these munchkins have entered our school is because of the abundant construction to the district. Of cour e, the con truction is not all that bad. There are many positive a pects for the future, such as: new band, strings, and choir rooms. We will also add a new gym and more classroom , new industrial tech and science room , and a new grade 7-12 campu . We will surely mis the friendly constructions workers that have been part of all of the tudents' lives this year. They have been seen helping the students with their homework, eating lunch with them, and at times, getting in on a game of frisbee. Overall, the discomforts of this transitional year have been well worth it.

The choir and trings groups had a challenging and fulfilling year. With a competition in April, both choir and tring demonstrate their musical talent in Virgina Beach, Virginia. Their trip will begin with the 9.5 hour trip to

Virginia, where they will be visiting Busch Gardens, going on a dinner cruise, and meeting other mu icians. It will prove to be a great learning experience for both the trings and choir who have long anticipated this wonderful experience. The choir participates in numerous concerts such as the fall, winter and spring. This year both the Mixed Ensemble and the Women' choir will be carolling in downtown Chagrin. The Mixed En emble will al o be inging for the Rotar Club, Gurney School and will be traveling to downtown Cleveland and singing at the Arcade. The choir i directed and taught by Mis Jody Coyle. Tennis takes skill, and that is exactly what this years tennis team had. Although they got off to a rocky start, they turned up the heat and had a winning season. This years' tennis team consisted of two seniors, four juniors, and two sophomores. There is no doubt about it experience wasn't on the side of these talented ladies. They had a diverse and difficult schedule this year, but because of the captain's leadership qualities, they were able to pull together and

be as one. These ladies had many big victories over the season, but some of their biggest triumphs were against Wickliffe, Brush and Gilmore. They even had to go up against Division I schools, such as Mentor, Mayfield and Hudson. The lineup for this team consisted of Cate Larabee in 1st singles, Sarah Toth in 2nd singles and Cara Tallman at 3rd singles. Leading first doubles were Captain Lindsay Bartel and Katie Henderson. Sarah LeClerc and Michele Fallert round out the rest of the team in 2nd doubles. When asked about their season, Cate Larabee said, "We were not the most experienced team, but we hung in there and played with the best of them. " Next year the girls will return with five varsity players and they hope to win the CVC and make it further into the state tournament. The boys' soccer team continued the fine tradition with a 9-5-4 record this season. The team was lead by the senior captain Tyler Exline, who displayed his leadership skills on and off the field. Seniors Scott Locurto, Chris Wagner, Chip Conn, Joe Reinart, and Brad Thalman contributed to the strong upper class players. After a slow start the boys really turned it around and went on a streak of 6 wins and ties. Highlights of this exciting stretch of the season included Joe Reinhart's seven shutouts in goal, a 2-2 tie with crosstown rival Kenston, and a 3-1 win over Perry which clinched a share of the CVC title for the second time in three years. Dr. Mario Gerhardt achieved the amazing feat of recording his 300th victory after the sectional championship game, but the post-season run ended in a hard fought, district semifinal 2-1 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas. Although the team was not expected to accomplish much this year, they surpassed the expectations of other teams and achieved the goals they had set.

Since day one, the football team has always kept the attitude that they would win every time th y tepped out of the new locker room, and onto that fi ld. For the first four games they actually did. This team never let their guard down, knew what they had to do to win and th y did it. The seniors of this team really worked hard to make their final year of Chagrin Football outstanding. They all showed their enthusiasm with the help of their fans and cheerleaders. It was difficult to miss all of the spirit walking around the school during the week e pecially on Friday . Cha rin Football T-shirts, cheerleading uniforms, jer ey , locker tags, balloons, even our very own version of the "red carpet" look, in our own school colors of cour e. The Varsity Cheerleader tried their be t to be the qu en of spirit, but what would the team be without the Tiger pride of the players and coaches . Head Coach Mark lammarino has been practicing with his team since school let out last year, and he hasn't stopped yet. He is fired up about this season, and will not let a win slip past us. It takes a lot of talent and determination to go out on that field every Friday night, and know that nothing le s than perfect will be a cepted. This team took any mi takes in stride and had them fixed by the next game. The Chagrin Falls Tigers ' aim for personal perfection and that is just what th y get. The combination of coaching staff, cheerlead r , fans, and th player's enthusiasm, shows the spirit ofTiger Football is definitely committed to excellence.

Off the beam, over the vault, around the bars! Hard work and daily practice paid off for this year's six member gymnastic t am. With th loss of five tal nt d gymnasts from th past eason, it wa questionable if there would be a gymnastic team this year. However, the commitment put forth from each of the gymnast mad the team happen. The gymna t practiced ten hours a week, twice a week at a private gym and they gradually improved. In their first meet, Chagrin beat two of the three West Geauga teams, which wa a great start to the season. The only senior on the team this year was Vicky DiMichele, who began gymna tics her junior year a a vaulter, al o competing eventually on bar . A great new addition to the team was freshman Emily Wooden, who showed much talent in the port, and helped the team as an all -around gymnast. was decided, and we had just five short days to wait for the results. Homecoming Week was filled with theme-oriented Spirit Days. Wednesday night was the traditional parade from the Middle School to the High School, for the bonfire. Following the parade everyone gathered at the Stadium as the band played the fight song and students cheered for their favorite sports teams. After many cheers and the introduction of the fall sports teams, Dr. Axner dismissed the students to the back baseball field, and the bonfire was lit. Flames illuminated the sky and the sounds of fireworks filled the air as the students cheered. 'Orange and Black' Friday, kicked off the weekend festivities and got everyone pumped for the game. Along with the rest of the faculty, Mr. Ricci's sign "The tigers are Mighty .. chondria," displayed the contagious school spirit. That night the skin-headed team played a tough game against their rival Kirtland. As the attendants were escorted out onto the field, everyone eagerly anticipated the crowning of the Queen. A Night Under the Stars fit the evening perfectly. The sixty-five degree day turned into a warm and perfect night for a winter formal. The cheerleaders

decorated the commons with balloons, stars, and lights. With a little imagination a night under the stars took shape. The Commons filled with people from all grades with one thing in mind : an evening offun and friends. No winterformal is ever the same, it is impossible to ever know what to expect. However everyone can always expect to have a good time. Half way through the dance the King was announced and crowned . J.P. Ponikvarreceivedthe honor, and wore his crown proudly. The football dance team returned this year to a fun and eventful season. They performed energetic routines and entertained the crowds every Friday night. Dance captains Joelle Van Skyhock and Morgan Hanner led their squad offive new dancers

through the season of Football Dance Squad . The dance team put together routines which entailed dancing and twirling their flags to the music played by the marching band . The dancers were featured during halftime by Cablevision in a filming of the football game early in the season . The team's energetic moves were enhanced by their brand new orange and black sequined uniforms and matching orange flags . The Dance Squad was very proud of their performances this year. A favorite of the crowd seemed to be their dance to the hit 70's song Jungle Boogie in which senior tuba player Jake Wilkof added his moves to the dance. Some other songs they performed to were Sell Out, Touch the Sun and Rock this Town in which seniors Brad Grabowski and Brian Miller did a swing dance with senior dance squad members Joelle Vanskyhock and Morgan Hanner. The jazzy dances done to these songs highlighted the girls' talent and energy and added an extra element of fun to the football halftime shows.

Senior Women Still Prevail

I t couldn't get any better. A beautiful crisp fall day, stands packed with people, and most importantly, adrenaline-filled girls

ready to play some football. The seniors, being more prepared than the juniors, had a whole squad of cheerleaders dedicated to pumping up the crowd on the upperclassmen's behalf. The game began with the seniors on defense. They were able to keep the juniors from scoring for the first three quarters until finally they used their master strategy. The senior women figured that in order to make the game a little more interesting, they would let the juniors score and then furiously catch up. After scoring the tying touchdown, the very mature senior women decided to leave it at that, in order to keep the junior babies from crying all the way home. The game was over and although the score board said 6 to 6, everyone knew who the true champions were: the seniors! After the game, the real competition commenced . Both teams met at the MetroParks and proceeded to participate in a full-fledged arsenal. Some Junior girls, such as Suzy Sutliff, thought that they could "outegg and cream" the senior women; however when the battle went down, the juniors got what they deserved. Although Powder Puff '98 was a very competitive game, a universal truth was understood by both sides: The only thing that matters is having fun, but seniors will always prevail.

AYITONTHE INE Service club devote their

efforts and LAY IT ON THE LINE for the community.

"You're lazy! Worthless! A Procrastinator! Going Nowhere!" Members of service clubs however prove this perception of adolescents wrong. Those involved in Key Club, Peer Care, TI/S.A.D.D., and Project Support interact and support the community in so many ways. They support local fund-raisers such as food drives and Habitat for Humanity. These clubs bring awareness to younger children about growing up and helping people. As for Key Club, their goal is to help the less fortunate. Throughout the year, they help the community by serving Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless, and they pay visits to the elderly at Hamlet. Peer Care is the most popular of the service clubs( for females). This club teaches its members to communicate with others, while being good listeners at the same time. Every year this club holds an overnight retreat where the members participate in role-playing activities. TI/S.A.D.D. helps students deal with the pressures of drugs and alcohol, and works with the elementary students. The members present skits, and talk to the elementary students, in hopes of helping them in the future. Finally Project Support interacts with the handicapped and the disabled. The members of all of these clubs are very dedicated and have to devote a great deal of time and effort all year long for the better of the community.

WORTH Student ften found activitie WORTH THE TIME when they put forth extra effort

HE IME

Clubs, such as Yearbook, Newspaper, Office Aids and Prism, take up a lot of students' free time. Although these clubs require extra effort, the participants seem to enjoy the work. Yearbook is faced with the task of presenting the events that occur each year amongst the students. From the football team to superlatives, every aspect of the High School is covered. The staff must work extra hard to meet their deadlines and avoid all errors. In order to accomplish this feat, dedicated yearbook staffers attended a four day Journalism Convention at Columbia University in New York City this past spring. The Yearbook provides a source of memories and a record of the year. Just as well, the Newspaper staff keeps all of the students informed about what is happening during the school year. Office aids are a huge help for the secretaries. They sacrifice their study halls to provide services that are time consuming. If the office aids were absent from the daily curriculum, there would be no one to deliver the sacred detention slips or absence sheets. Prism puts out the yearly production of students' creative works, publishing the talents of the young writers in the school.

CLOSIN Foreign language club try CLOSING THE GAP by tying different culture together

THE

AP This year's Spanish Club has participated in many exciting events through

out the year. Beginning the Spanish Club adventure, students traveled to nearby Spanish restaurants such as Old Mission and El Rio de Bravo. Spanish Club also has many "fiestas" after school, when the students meet and make different Mexican dishes such as quesadillas, burritos, and "arroz con polio" This year's Spanish Club officers are: president, M.E. Bruce, Vice President Jeremy Galante, Treasurer and Secretary Derek Lomas. Officers will help to plan the trip to Costa Rica this Spring, where the Spanish Club members will be able to "Close the Gap" while learning about the different culture of Spanish countries. This year's German Club also got to enjoy the food and culture of Germany as they traveled to the Hofbrau Haus, where they experienced delicious foods such as Bratwurst and Sauerkraut. German Club is planning a fascinating trip to Germany this spring break, where they will be visiting Berlin, Munich, and Austria. "I am really excited to visit Germany and experience the different culture first-hand. I am also excited to see the different monuments" states sophomore Bethany Harnett with enthusiasm. The experiences of this year's German Club will be one students will not forget. This year's exchange students, Rodrego Tejada and Kei Sato are "Closing the Gap" of different countries as they bring their experiences of Bolivia and Japan to us. Both are members of Ineract Club, and on his spare time, Kei is a great addition the this year's Swim Team. By There a Collin and Kari Wilson

HEADS ELD After hour of practicing, competi- I GH tion club had their HEADS HELD HIGH during victorious moment .

Academic Challenge members meet everyday for one to two hours in preparation for big events. They practice their skills using computer programs, filmstrips and trivia questions. The team competes against various local schools. Their biggest rivals include Hawken and Solon. The team took tenth place overall in Ohio last year at the CWRU Trivia Challenge competitions. This year the team plans to remain competitive in competition although they will not appear on the television show, It's Academic. "The team members are witty, intelligent, and dedicated to the success of our club," says coach Laurie Chojnowski. The Speech and Debate Club meets once a week and individually spend countless hours practicing and memorizing speeches that they prepare for monthly competition against local area schools. The team competes through the months of October to February attending ten to fifteen tournaments. The members work diligently on one speech and take it to the competition, however, if that particular speech does not receive a certain score by the judge, it must be redone for future competition. Each member team concentrates on one main speech, in hopes of making a difference and convincing others of their opinions. -Elizabeth Debelak and Em my Wisniewski

Community oriented club are GIVI G THEIR TIME for a drive toward excellence

HEIR IME

A day in the life of a boring person involves he or she going straight home after school, pigging out on Doritos, and then sleeping until Beverly Hills 90210 comes on. But a day in the life of a diligent student involves a wide variety of after school activities. Students that give their time for school clubs do not necessarily receive tangible rewards such as prizes or gifts, but they get the honor and self-gratitude of knowing that their work has paid off. Weightlifting, for example, helps students' physical composition improving their health, endurance, and fitness. Art club has an incredible effect on people, especially since one of the teachers, Mr. King has inspired many of the club's students to reach for their goals and dreams. Science club members are lucky enough to have the interesting mind of Mr Buckle at work for them. The word is that if you want to hear a good joke, join science club. Students involved in the drama club show their appreciation for the arts by attending professional performances. These clubs show it is beneficial for all student to give their time.

TAKING ULL RCE Student gain leader hip po ition

a they find themselve TAKING FULL FORCE of an organization

The leaders of our student body are represented in the form of Student Council and National Honor Society every year with great class. The basic roles of Student Council are to set up dances, represent the student body and help run the school. The peers that are elected into office attend weekly meetings, retreats and special events. The National Honor Society is a select group of students who are recognized for their grades, participation in extracurricular activities, and overall character. The requirements to belong to The National Honor Society are an overall G.P.A of 3.5, numerous community service hours and leadership qualities. Industrial Strength is a new program that involves supporting the new changes around the High School. With the new middle school adding on to the high school, it is crucial to have a good transition these next two years. The job at hand is in good hands with Chagrin's Industrial Strength class.
