Identifying Concerns and Setting Goals

Address Special Needs

Panel of 10 Faculty Members: Needed a collaborative workspace that was able to be comfortable and converted into a meeting space

Survey of Teachers: Survey of Eastview faculty and staff, data collected indicated that they wantedconvenience and beverage options for lunch

How we made our decision: We talked to our Interior Design teacher about taking leadership of the actual renovation of the room

Target Audience

Eastview High School Faculty and Staff: To eat lunch, participate in recreational activities and hold small group staff meetings

Eastview Students: A place for students to come and work on homework or get help from teachers

Extra-Curricular Groups: Using the room as a place to meet for special groups and after school meetings

Goal/Mission

To make the EVHS staff dining lounge an inviting place that could be used by

staff, students and extra-curricular clubs for collaborative working and

learning. Our rationale is that by helping our teachers we would overall

benefit the school as a whole.

Reflects FCCLA Purposes

To promote greater understanding between youth and

adults – we worked with adults to complete the task

To provide opportunities for making decisions and for

assuming responsibilities – we took it upon ourselves to

decide the options for further renovation of the room

To promote Family and Consumer Sciences and related

occupations – interior design is not only an occupation

but a series of classes at many schools

Relates to FACS

Interior Design:

• Using the elements and principles of design, to create a welcoming but functional atmosphere

• Being able to participate in a real world design project that parallels what the career of an interior designer entails. Budgeting, design process, client needs/wants

Forming a Plan

Scope

Steps: The initial teacher panel, the interior design class team board project, the design panel, the first stage of renovation, the Eastview daily show, and finally the design process

Barriers resolved: Staying within budget, finding an adequate amount of time and the pulling together of our resources for the renovation

Project Organization

Alternative action: Having the Interior Design students be more involved

Consequences: Students didn’t have as much power to know what was needed because they didn’t have as much access

Challenges addressed: Budget; we added a lot “DIY” designs because a lot of the staff liked them

PartnersSuperValu: We used this

corporation as an inspiration into the type of designs taken which were “collaborative workspaces”

Eastview Community Foundation: We were able to purchase products for the room from a grant that we received

Interior Design Classes

EVHS Faculty and Families

Work Plan• Interior design students were to get into teams and

present designs based on a budget of $2,500 and the client needs/wants

• Panel gets together to choose different designs from each board that the groups created to agree upon a final design plan that would be used in the room

• Group of volunteers incorporate the designs into the room throughout a weekend that was set for renovations

• Using the rest of the budget of $500, we put finishing touches to the room including wall art and lighting

TimelineSummer of 2013: Panel of 10 Faculty Members

Sept. 11: Project announced to the class by Jodi Hanson (Student Service Advisor)

Sept. 20: Field trip to SuperValu

Sept. 23-27: Classes work on project

Sept. 30: Groups present their designs to a 4 people panel

Nov. 9-10: Volunteers work on the Staff Dining room

Jan. 13-17: Take feedback through surveys from faculty

Jan. 20: Work with Ms. Hanson and decide how the last $500 is to be spent

Feb. 16: Bought the agreed upon products from the $500

Further enhancements are still in progress.

Activities, Tasks and Roles

• Activities: Volunteers met on Saturday and Sunday, November 9 and 10

• Tasks: To paint the room, bring in furniture and arrange it, put up the TV and put the bulletin board on the wall

• Roles: Ms. Hanson (Facilitator) Ms. Hendrickson (FCCLA Advisor and FACS teacher)

Budget• Grant received from the Eastview

Community Foundation of $2,500

• This was put into new side tables, lounge chairs, LCD flat screen (donation), bulletin board, a bookshelf and wall decor (paint)

• There was $500 left with the budget

• We bought a Keurig machine, wall pictures

and bookshelf accessories with it

Increase Awareness/ Public Recruitment

Our media outreach is our school’s daily announcments called the Flash and newspaper. It would show what our project was and how we did it. They also did a time lapse of the actual process

PR for Interior Design classes to encourage it as a course through a real-life example

FCCLA encourages cooperation between parties and that is exactly how we accomplished this project

Acting on Plan and Follow up

Project ImpactOur evidence of project impact was surveys after the fact

to gather data and personal opinion of our target audience

Youth Involved and Volunteer Recruitment

• Eastview Interior Design classes participated in the design idea/creation of the project

• During the renovation many faculty members, staff and community members came and volunteered their time

• Eastview FCCLA members also volunteered in the putting together of furniture, painting, and other activities

Uniqueness

• It was a unique project in that we collaborated with a variety of resources and were able to have the opportunity to create a space that would benefit our entire school.

• It was a chance to combine our FACS class knowledge and FCCLA purposes into a real world project that benefited our school.

Evaluation and Follow up• The dining area was found to be less accessible by teachers at lunch

time and concluded that the room would be better fitted for staff and student meetings by the surveys we created and the interview with Mrs. Hanson, the facilitator of the project

• Our future efforts include non-stop improvements that will take place throughout the rest of this year and next

• We truly appreciate the help of our Interior Design teacher, Mrs. Hendrickson for the support and help and also Mrs. Hanson for trusting us to create a well designed workspace that would be used for many years to come
