Offshore AC platform

Offshore Wind Connections Platform - Gravity Based Structure

A Gravity Base Structure designed on a combination of well known technologies

The platform is transported on its own displacement by tug boats and ballasted down to sit on the seafloor –i.e. no need for Heavy Lift Vessel

The concept does not have the limitations in weight and size as lift-install concepts or other self-installing concepts such as jack-ups

Less sensitive to bad weather conditions during T&I compared to lift-install and also less sensitive than other self-install concepts such as jack-ups

Systems can be tested at quay side at the shipyard which enables a more efficient commissioning offshore

Aibel - Offshore Wind scope

– New offshore facilities; HVDC converter platforms

• Generic and cost competitive execution model

– Maintenance and Facility Services

• Optimization of lifetime cost through both construction and maintenance of platforms

– Other potential scope to be evaluated

– Focus on European market (Germany, UK)

Design process and verification• Analyse and verification of different platform

concept vs market requirements• > ”Gravity Based Structure” (GBS) selected• Joint ABB/Aibel twelve months FEED study • Based on proven technology within in oil and gas

• DNV reviewed• Tank tested

Page 34: Ung Energi 16.05

Gravity based structure HVDC platformBase spesifification• 600 – 1100 MW HVDC• ”Self-installed” gravity based structure• Fixed to seabed after installation• Water depth 15 – 45 m• Design base NORSOK, SOLAS, DNV• Power cables through J-tubes protected in legs• Design life 30 years

Dolwin Beta – Aibel’s first wind platform

■ Awarded contract in August 2011 (ABB)

■ Design and build Dolwin 2

■ Wind farm cluster near Helgoland, in the

German sector of the North Sea

■ Convert alternating current into direct current

before sending it onshore via subsea cables

■ Can receive electricity from more than 200

offshore wind turbines

■ The size of a football pitch

■ Accommodation for 24 people

Page 36: Ung Energi 16.05

Gravity based structure HVDC platformInstallation an commissioning• Transportation by tugs• Low weather dependence• Position secured by own weight, ballasting into

seabed• Minimize hook up works offshore • Offshore commissioning limited to energization

and trial run-after installation of HV-cable• Stability verified and only required during

transport and installation as structure when in service will rest on sea-bed

• No noisy piling required

Page 37: Ung Energi 16.05

Summary• Reliable design• Reduced installation risk• Low weather dependent installation• Expandable for higher power ratings• Environmental friendly• Maintenance platform for wind farms• Minimized life cycle cost • First platform will be installed offshore

Offshore Wind – a political market?

Political drivers• Need for energy• Need for substitute for fossile fuel

– Environmental– Less dependencies for import– Need for industrial development

• Sustainable energy production• Strong support schemes in the start-up phase• Financial crisis and budget restrictions in Europa

Business drivers• Need for energy• Need for substitute for fossile fuel

– Environmental– Less dependencies for import– Need for industrial development

• Demand for a 30-40% cost reduction short term• Lack of offshore competence and experience in the market• Sustainable energy production
