INTRODUCTION

Cold emails are tricky to write because they can

make you feel uncomfortable. However, the cold

hard truth is that cold emailing is a commonality of

the business world that you must become familiar

with.

So how do you do it? Next we will explore some

tips for writing effective cold emails.

MAKE A CONTACT LIST

Who do you want to talk to? You need to target the

type of person or business you want to send a cold

email to.

For example: a business professional who wants to

improve their craft might ask themselves the

following questions: Whom do I admire in my

industry? If I could pick the brain of anyone in my

industry, who would it be?

Once you have completed your list, you’ll have to

find contact information for your prospective

contacts.

GET TO THE POINT

Keep it short and sweet.

In a cold email, the person or company you are

emailing likely doesn’t know who you are. If they do

not know who you are, they are going to be looking

for some reason to continue reading your email

and, honestly, they will be looking for a reason to

care at all about your email.

Therefore, don’t clutter your email with lots of

pleasantries and formality: get to the point as

quickly as possible.

“Get to the point already!”

GET TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE EMAILING

Do your research!

You only get one chance to make a first impression,

and with a cold email your first impression is

incredibly important.

By researching your contact, you will gather

information that will inform your decision making

throughout the entire email.

You will want to tailor your message for your

contact as much as possible to increase the

likelihood that you will receive a reply.

SEND THE PERFECT MESSAGE THE FIRST TIME

I’ll repeat: you only have one chance to make a first

impression, so you’ll want to craft the perfect

message the first time you contact someone.

If you’ve done your research and take your time

writing your email, then you shouldn’t have anything

to worry about.

FOLLOW-UP

Did you hear nothing back? A good rule of thumb is

to wait two or three weeks for a reply. If you haven’t

heard anything from your target, then feel free to

send a follow-up message inquiring about your last

communication.
