Branch Overview on Sustainable Tourism in South Africa.
Welcome.
In 1994 South Africa became a democratic country after years of
colonial and racist domination when the country embarked on the
road to reconciliation to build a nation united in its diversity.
This year, 2010 will be an important year in South Africa’s histori-
cal development. Over the past 16 years, South Africa has shown
the world that it is possible to emerge from conflict to the creation
of a prosperous, peaceful and stable multiparty constitutional
democracy.
The hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup has given us a unique
opportunity to make this event into an important marketing project
by working together to build South Africa into a powerful base for
economic cooperation and growth. We need to ensure that the
World Cup should enhance our global competiveness, which will
contribute to our long-term economic growth for sustainable job
creation and wealth creation opportunities.
In all of this, tourism plays a crucial role, which can be described
as our “new gold” which can assist us create jobs for develop-
ment and economic growth. Unlike the real gold, tourism is a
never-ending and inexhaustible resource for social cohesion.
Tourism in South Africa provides us with sustainable employment
for youth and women in urban and rural communities. We there-
fore welcome the support and cooperation of SIPPO, which is
helping South Africa’s small and medium tourism enterprises to
find market access in Switzerland.
The Branch, Overview on Sustainable Tourism in South Africa,
provide Swiss tourism business partners and consumers find
suitable products in our country, especially during the 2010
Soccer World Cup.
Together with our Swiss partners, we will continue to work to-
wards the growth of tourism in South Africa for the benefit of
all our people and I look forward to our continued partnership.

SIPPO was established as a mandate from the State Secretariat
for Economic Affairs of Switzerland (SECO), carried out by Osec.
The programme supports small and medium-sized enterprises
(SMEs) from emerging markets and markets in transition to access
the Swiss and European markets. In addition to this, SIPPO helps
Swiss and European importers to find suitable partners in emer-
ging countries and countries in transition.
The programme has five main goals:•
To inform the Swiss and European import economy about new •
market sources
To strengthen trade institutions and business sector associa •
tions in the trade promotion
process•
To increase the competitiveness of SMEs in selected partner •
countries
To develop the manufacturing and exporting skills of SMEs in •
selected partner countries
To establish qualified trade contacts between SMEs from emer •
ging markets and markets
in transition and the Swiss and European import economy•
Since 2004 SIPPO has also become active in the promotion of
sustainable tourism and is actively promoting tourism organisa-
tions and is supporting ministries from various countries;
e.g. Peru, Bolivia and South Africa.

Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) encourages fair and
responsible tourism development in South Africa, through aware-
ness raising, capacity building and the facilitation of a voluntary
certification programme that awards a special Trademark (label) to
tourism establishments in South Africa that meet specific criteria,
including:
Fair wages and working conditions•
Fair operations, purchasing and distribution of benefits•
Ethical business practice•
Respect for human rights, culture and the environment•

The Fair Trade movement started in Europe in the 1960s to help
producers in developing countries receive their fair share of the
revenue from the sale of their products in the developed world.
It is quite a novelty and for many people a surprising fact that it is
also possible to have fair trade in the tourism industry and not only
for consumer goods. Fair Trade in Tourism is about ensuring that
the people, whose land, natural resources, labour, knowledge and
culture are used for tourism activities, actually benefit from tourism.
In 1999 Tourism Concern, a London based organisation, initiated
an international network on Fair Trade in Tourism which focused
mainly on research, advocacy and information sharing. On 13 June
2002, the Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa Trademark (label) was
officially launched in South Africa - the first time in the history of the
fair trade movement that a trademark or label for the tourism sector
had been created. On 22 October 2003, the first trademark users
were accredited.
95% of Swiss tourists consider respect for local culture to be highly
important when choosing a holiday (Switzerland Travel Writers and
Journalism Club).
The enterprises presented in this brochure have all been certified
over the past years by FTTSA and do place emphasis on the 6
principles of fair share, democracy, respect, reliability, transparency
and sustainability.

to a couple who are rewriting history in their own quiet way. What

community development projects.

Introduction
The location was formerly an alien wattle plantation in the semi
wilds of a little known area of the Tsitikamma (Garden Route)
known as the Crags. The area‘s fynbos was rapidly disappearing
as invader plants strangled the indigenous forests. Then in 1993,
Andy Fermor decided to use his skills and energy to develop his
dream and build a tourist lodge.
Site and Surrounding
The lodge itself is situated on the edge of a gorge and is a private
nature reserve with panoramic views of the surrounding indige-
nous forests, valleys and mountains.

The majority of Klippe Rivier staff members are previously disa-
dvantaged individuals from rural backgrounds, who have since

One philosophy of Klippe Rivier Country House is to support small
enterprises and buy local supply whenever possible. Guests are
encouraged to visit local art and craft businesses.
Klippe Rivier Country House has installed a wastewater manage-
ment system and utilises low-volume toilet systems. Waste sepa-
ration and alien vegetation removal are practiced on its grounds.
The establishment has also invested considerably in the preserva-
tion of the historic homestead and surrounding buildings.

Klippe Rivier has been converted into six luxury guest suites,
preserving the ambience of a bygone era. The interiors have a de-
finite „English country house meets Africa“ ambience which works
beautifully with the stunning architecture of the homestead.
Downstairs, three spacious bedrooms each have an open fireplace,
dressing room and generous en-suite bathroom with separate
shower and toilet. Three loft rooms upstairs are under thatch, offer
mountain views and have private balconies. A secluded cottage is
for the more romantic, with its own fireplace and private garden.
All bedrooms are air-conditioned.

for dinner.

Relax at the salt water swimming pool and enjoy the company
of owls in the oaks. Play a game of croquet and enjoy watching

a good stroll to the gum trees at the top of the farm and if you‘re
feeling energetic enough you can take the gravel road which leads

skills development projects.
Excursions / Activities
Due to the seasonal occurrence of certain species, Africa‘s Ocean
Safaris offers a choice of two different marine tours, each running
for between one and a half and two hours. Trips can be arranged
for groups of 6 or more passengers, depending on the season.
Throughout the year, Ocean Safaris offers the Discovery Cruise.
On this cruise they typically look for dolphins and visit the seal
colony on the Robberg Peninsula. The trip is preceded by a
briefing by the guide/skipper at the shop after all passengers have
checked in. Once all have been equipped with lifejackets and a
last visit to the loo, they take a short walk to the boats.
Each trip is different and as such there is no defined route that
they follow in search of cetaceans. This will be decided by the
crew in consultation with other vessels in the area, recent sighting
and prevailing weather conditions.

Introduction
The Alternative Winelands Tour, facilitated by Dreamcatcher, offers
a heart-warming and educational alternative to the mainstream
Cape Winelands experience.
Fair Trade in Tourism
Visitors on the Alternative Winelands Tour are encouraged to leave
the community environment as they would like to find it; this is
actively communicated through Dreamcatcher’s literature and a
pre-tour briefing offered by local tourist guides. Local entrepreneurs
are encouraged to reduce their own environmental impacts as well
as to educate their wider communities on environmental awareness
and waste management. Installation of the first solar geysers at the
Kamamma Homestays and Cook-up venues has commenced and
will continue until all entrepreneurs have replaced electrical geysers
with solar hot water systems. Turning waste into resources through
water-saving, recycling and replacing alien plants with indigenous
vegetation is on Dreamcatcher’s training agenda for 2010.
Excursions / Activities
The tour features insights into the lives of labourers who worked
the land during the establishment of the Western Cape’s wine es-
tates enabling visitors to learn about the challenges of hostel and
farm life and how the community has developed to present day.
The tour visits wine estates that have demonstrated a commit-
ment to employees (such as providing access to land and techni-
cal assistance to start their own wine label) and features a unique
opportunity to prepare (and sample!) traditional food during a
“cook-up with the Kamammas” – women from the local area.

represents a globally unique concept of an entertaining and inspi-
rational interactive exploration of Life in Mazes and Gardens.
Site and Surrounding
For the broad-minded personalities always in search of the
unusual there is Soekershof Walkabout in Klaas Voogds West
between Robertson and Ashton. ‚Weird but Passionate‘ hosts;
great stories; a wealth of plant life; the worlds‘ largest hedge-ma-
ze; time-travel with Albert Einstein; a stone-age cinema; the New
South African Handshake; philosophers garden and, of course,
the highly acclaimed succulent gardens with more than 2400
different species from all over the world in the unprotected open
air. Visitors can earn a memorable reward by fulfilling a quest in
the Klaas Voogds Maze.
Fair Trade in Tourism
Soekershof is a unique attraction that is based on providing
concrete benefits for its staff and other local stakeholders, while
also investing in the conservation of biodiversity. The business has
developed a workplace culture that is based on mutual respect and
communicating with one another on an equal level. Training provi-
ded to staff enables them to obtain national qualifications.
Excursions / Activities
The original succulent garden has been restored and extended to
the point where the garden today comprises in excess of 2’400
varying succulents, including cacti and other exotics that are
uniquely kept in the unprotected open air. The visitor’s centre
houses, among various delights, exclusive handcrafted gifts by
local artists. Full moon walks, corporate teambuilding, tea and
light snacks complete the experience.
Besides, Soekershof also incorporates a Philosophers Garden
and the largest hedge-maze in the world. This Klaas Voogds Maze
is not a maze in the traditional perception. It is a maze like life;
walking from one story into another. The stories (local folklore) are
visualised with objects towering above the hedges but as in life
there are also a few things visitors have to find in order to earn a
memorable reward.

the Klaserie, Umbabat and Manyeleti reserves. In recent years, the
fences separating Timbavati from the Kruger National Park were
dropped, thus forming a pristine wilderness area of approximately
three million hectares.
Fair Trade in Tourism
Umlani has developed a Youth Leadership programme at Welver-
diend Village, where the majority of staff originates. This program-
me, which is linked to the Wildlife College, entices historically
disadvantaged learners to visit Umlani. There they gain insight
into environmental issues and find out about eco-tourism career
opportunities.
Umlani’s has an exemplary staff HIV / Aids programme, designed
by the local expert Grace Mashaba, featuring awareness work-
shops and one-on-one staff counselling. Umlani also provides
staff with medical care, including the right to consult a traditional
healer, which is aligned to the FTTSA principle of respect for hu-
man and cultural rights, as well as for the environment.
Hotel
Each hut has en-suite facilities including an open-air bush shower
fuelled by wood fires. The hut is comfortably fitted with white
mosquito nets, crisp white linen and towels as well as with stan-
dard bathroom amenities, bottled water (although the tap water is
perfectly safe to drink) and insect repellent. Umlani‘s philosophy
of simplistic luxury and ‚getting back to nature‘ is enhanced by
the romance of operating without electricity, so each hut and the
entire camp is lit by oil lamps, providing a warm and romantic
atmosphere.
Excursions / Activities
Umlani offers two game drives per day in open top Land Rovers.
The morning game drive will leave at dawn and the night drive will
leave in the late afternoon. There is always a ranger on stand-by
for an optional morning bush walk. During the day, guests can
go on short walks with the ranger after breakfast or lounge in the
hammocks around the swimming pool.

Thakadu River Camp is a five star wholly community-owned ten-
ted safari camp within Madikwe Game Reserve in the North West
Province.
Site and Surrounding
The main camp is located between the Marico River and a small
tributary of the Marico.
Fair Trade in Tourism
Thakadu is an eco-tourism partnership between the North West
Parks and Tourism Board, the Molatedi community and The
Madikwe Collection. This pioneering partnership concept is an
innovative approach to community development in South Africa
whereby (in the case of Thakadu) the community owns the assets
and outsources various operational aspects with a skills transfer
objective.
Hotel
The camp is set within the riverine canopy along the banks of the
Marico River and comprises twelve tented suites, each with their
own viewing deck overlooking the river. The tents are large and
spacious and are wonderfully decorated and appointed. Within
the canvas frame, the interior is uniquely designed to incorporate
a full bathroom. Each tent has a sliding door that opens onto a
private deck overlooking the river. Of the twelve tented suites,
four are family units, each with an extra sleeper couch catering
for children.

Introduction
Tuningi Safari Lodge is an elegant five star lodge.
Site and Surrounding
The lodge set in a tranquil valley in the magnificent Big 5, malaria
free Madikwe Game Reserve in the North West Province.
Fair Trade in Tourism
Madikwe is special in that its conception was a tactic to save
the area from poverty and so was born out of a sense of social
responsibility. The communities in the area have not only been
involved in contributing to the project but also benefited greatly
from the jobs that the reserve has created.
Hotel
Tuningi Safari Lodge can accommodate 16 (sixteen) guests in
exclusive villas and the lodge itself has been designed in such a
way that it can be divided for families, intimate groups or VIP’s
in search of utter privacy - a concept that is unique to Tuningi.
All rooms at Tuningi and Little Tuningi have air conditioning, ceiling
fans, gas fireplaces, en-suite bathrooms, beautifully appointed
baths, outdoor rock showers and private wrap around wooden
decks. The design brief was to create space by blending interiors
with the bush through utilising retractable doors and windows
wherever possible.
Excursions / Activities
Tuningi’s game rangers are of course highly qualified but more
than this they have a skill for making guests feel passionate about
the environment and wildlife while offering a unique opportunity
for those willing to be educated on many aspects of wildlife and
bush etiquette either on foot, for those brave enough, or in 4x4
open air vehicles. Lion, elephant, buffalo, white and black rhino,
leopard and the rare and endangered wild dog are only some of
the unique sightings to experience during your stay.
