• What is in the centre of the image?• The background setting is in the centre of the image, the models are at

either side rather than the centre focus.• What is on the periphery?• The outskirt is a rocky deserted background, it is plain with no bright

colour, this represents the clothing style of the shop being advertised.• Has the photo been staged?• Yes the photo has been staged as the models have been positioned

accordingly in order for the shot to reach its potential and portray appropriately.

• What do you think happened directly before the image was taken?• I think that directly before the image was taken, the models were

specifically positioned into that stance and aspects such as lighting and camera focus and angle were appropriately tweaked and checked.

• What do you think happened directly after?• I think that directly before the image was taken, the four band members

were specifically positioned into that stance and aspects such as lighting and camera focus and angle were appropriately tweaked and checked.

• Is the entire photo equally in or out of focus?• The photo is in focus, however I don’t believe it is

focused to the full maximum ability. I think this contributes to the alternative, edgy aspect of the shoot.

• Is the lighting bright, dim or shadowy?• The lighting is bright enough to establish features well

enough however it is not particularly bright. Shadow is used as they are outside so it may be due to sunlight and to enhance facial features.

• Is there any obvious cropping? What do you think was left out?

• The only possible cropping I can notice is the small absence of a part of the female models foot.

• What age, gender or ethnicity do they appear to be?• The models appear to be in their twenties, there is one male and female the

only ethnicity able to be identified is white.• What can you tell about them from their dress or situation?• The models appear to be very serious and focused. • Are they looking directly into the camera, inviting empathy or away, signifying

distance?• The female model is looking directly into the camera, on the other hand the

male is looking down at the ground. This shows diversity between genders and the lack of eye contact does signify distance.

• Is the photo taken at a high angle, making the viewer feel like they are looking down on the person or at a low angle, making the viewer feel like they’re looking up to/at the person?

• The photo is taken at a low angle and I think this signifies the high quality of the clothing brand. The audience knows that the clothing being modelled and advertised is luxurious and is therefore positioned above average

• What is their posture? Does the posture hint at other activities, feelings or situations that re not otherwise obvious in the photo?

• The posture of the models is relaxed and I think this shows comfort in the clothes that are being advertised which may entice the audience to buy them.

• Under what circumstances did the photographer decide to take the picture? Think about weather, time etc.

• Due to the shot being taken outside the photographer had to shoot at a time free of rain wind and too much sunlight. They will have probably shot at evening time of day at the shoot appears to not be too bright therefore peak sunlight may not have been appropriate.

• How ‘real’ is the setting? Does it look like an actual place or something more imaginary?

• The setting does appear real however it is a place that many people may not be familiar with as it is rural and quite unusual.

• What kind of ‘reputation’ does this setting have? What assumptions is the viewer supposed to make about this setting?

• The rocky desert setting has murky colours as connotations and I think this represents the ashy, edgy style of the brand.

• Why do you think this photo was taken? What is its purpose?

• This photo was taken as part of an advertising campaign therefore the models are used to display the clothing that the high-end brand sells.

• Where could you see this picture appearing?• I think that this picture could appear on

billboards or in magazines.
