  1. 1. Photoshoot PhotoshootRejected photos and used photos
  2. 2. Rejected Photos 0 I decided not to use these photos for various different reasons. For example in most of the photos the models werent looking at the camera and I was trying to achieve a direct mode of address. 0 Also these photos wouldve made it difficult to follow the typical conventions because they are generally very central which wouldnt have left much room for cover lines and left third etc. 0 Being outside meant that there isnt much contrast between them and the background which would have made it more difficult to make the cover lines and other features on the cover stand out because font colour may clash as I found out while making my college magazine. The same goes for the double page spread as well as that has a lot of writing on it so it needs a strong contrasting background so the writing is easy to read and stands out. 0 Another problem with them being outside was that the weather that day was quite overcast so the lighting was quite dull and had quite a dismal feel which is unappealing to look at as opposed to a warmer lighting that wouldve been achieved if it had been sunny.
  3. 3. Good Photos 0 I used a black background by hanging a black blanket over a make-shift frame next to a window. This allowed me to achieve the contrast previously mentioned and added more light to the scene. 0 I also used a flash to make the photos brighter but as the backdrop is black it absorbed most of the light, this makes the model look very striking. Natural light from the window was also used as this gave the images a warmer feel which is particularly evident on the images on the second slide. However the images taken outside tended to have quite a dull feel due to the typical British weather as it was quite overcast but the natural light combined with the flash gives quite a warm feel. 0 I like the photos where the three of them are looking off into the distance because it gives a clear view of all of their faces but allows the image to draw attention to the front-person of the band who would typically be the face of the band. It also gives them a certain mysterious feel. 0 However with the images used on the cover I had my model use direct mode of address because this would draw peoples attention to it when it is on the shelf of a shop as people are naturally drawn to look at someone if they feel they are staring at them. 0

  5. 5. Used Photos 0 I took the top right and middle bottom photos at a festival last year. I thought the top right one was suitable for the banner as it was used as an advertisement for Leeds and Reading festival and as it shows a large amount of people happy and having fun at an actual festival which is what would be used in a advert for a festival as they would want to show that it is a fun experience. 0 The bottom middle I used as the main image on the contents page because it has appealing colours that go nicely with the yellow of the house style and is relevant as it was taken at a popular and well know music festival. 0 I purposely set the top left and middle and bottom right against a black backdrop because this simultaneously gives it the level of contrast I feel it needed to be able to outstand other magazines and makes it easier to place the cover features without having them clash. 0 I wanted the models to look quite serious as it makes them appear much more striking which means they would be taken more seriously however the bottom left and right images have a more laid back feel to them which stops it feeling too serious. For example the bottom right image shows them jamming with their instruments and they arent looking at the camera, they are just acting natural as though they were rehearsing or maybe writing a song.
