AMELIE

Classic French music to establish setting and genre Director titles Institution titles Production company Actors Narrative over music for short while; Gives in-depth description of

location, setting, date, current events. Location established Setting established Date and time established Main character introduced Title Genre; Romantic comedy

The film opens with a black screen and a classical orange font, listing both the director and producer. This is covered with classic French music which introduces the location and the characters. The shot then changes to a long shot where an old French path is displayed, establishing the location with a voiceover of a French male, reinforcing the location. It’s a completely French film.

The main characters father is introduced using a low angle shot which shows the high status of the character. He’s going through old business books which suggests very work orientated.

Later on there is a shot of actors names, filmed as someone lays out the letters on a mustard background which gives a very creative and unique vibe to the film.

The next series of shots are Amelie as a child and the activities she used to get up with, its comedic and sweet however the music doesn’t exactly match the situation and thus creates a mystery about her life and if its actually quite depressing or not?

Frida Kahlo

• Institution established • Production company • Director• Other main people involved in creation

of film• Music; Mexican which helps to establish

setting• Actors • Main character introduced• Side character introduced• Frida Kahlo’s’ work shown throughout;

reinforces films content• Genre; American Biopic drama

Frida Kahlo opens with animated pictures very similar to the artists painting style, which reflects the subject of the film.

Dark colours are used throughout, not only are they true to the theme of Mexican deep colours but also represents the negative theme running throughout the film.

The credits are shown as painted by hand next to the text, they move like turn a page which could represent/illustrate the idea that its about her life, from beginning to end.

The main characters are introduced with the central character through the painting with snippets of her life showing their relationship.

The music over the top is very traditional which establishes the setting as well as their clothing. This allows the spectator to feel as if they’re expecting to watch a traditional Mexican film about a famous painter and that at some point there is a tragedy to happen.

Romeo & Juliet (Moulin Rouge)

• Institution • Production company• Director • Setting established • Past events established • Introduce two main families • Outline of plot established• Genre; Romantic drama film adaptation

The opening for this version of Romeo and Juliet isn’t full of action as they simply use the name of the director, Baz Luhrmann, and actors to sell and excite the audience.

The opening, much like the beginning of the play tells the audience the plot of the play, however its been modernised and is presented as a news report, showing both families as huge company corporations.

There is flash cutting after this period, shown to be on the news, introducing both separate companies and thus their names and their opposition to one another. This, with the lady taking the news report, who is also reading a synopsis of the play/film confirms and reinforces the location and plot. The camera shots change rapidly to represent power, emotion and a sense of drama. There is a use of both diagetic and non-diagetic sound throughout.

Juno

• Music, very uplifting, reflecting the film’s genre• Institution • Production Company• Director• Actors• Setting established • Genre; American comedy drama (independent)

Juno starts as a real life film, and the opening dissolves into a hand drawn opening, this shows the audience it’s rather light hearted and comedic especially paired with the country style music.

The main character is introduced immediately as she is the only character in the opening sequence. The tracking shot suggests that the rest of the film will be about following her life and encounters. During this titles and credits appear along side her. Overall the audience knows this is about the life of a teenage girl in America.

The setting is established, one with the environment, the housing and people are shown as stereotypically American, the main character also establishes this with her drink, SunnyD, an American orange juice. The time is established by the type of drink, clothing and cars. It’s set in the 2000s. This is significant as it gives the audience a taster and a clear understanding of the place, time and character.

The plot isn’t given away at all during this point, only the genre, location and main character.
