Term 2 project, 1E

A dog sled is a sled pulled by dogs over ice or through snow.

You would find dog sleds in the Arctic Circle which is at the top of the Earth.

It is very cold and there is lots of ice and snow.

In this picture, the land which is in the Arctic Circleis coloured light green.

The Arctic Circle includes parts of a few different countries.

• In the olden days, dog sleds were the main type of transport used to carry people around in the Arctic Circle.•They were also used for carrying things around the Arctic Circle, such as supplies (food, blankets, water), mail, and medicine.•These days, people race dog sleds as a sport.

•Dogs sleds are made out of strong but flexible wood.•These days people are also trying to make them out of fibreglass, plastic, and light metal.

• The type of energy a dog sled uses is pulling power. •When the dogs run, they pull the sled

along.• It is important to treat your dogs

properly so they are happy and healthy.

An interesting fact…

Different dogs on the team do different jobs.

The different jobs…• The lead dog is the most important dog on the team.

• The swing dogs come behind the lead dog – they help the lead dog to turn the whole team when you turn corners.

• After the swing dogs are the team dogs – they have lots of energy and speed.

• The wheel dogs are the last and they are usually the biggest. They must be able to pull the sled out if it gets stuck in snow or ice.

A person who travels by dog sled is called a musher.
