1. In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use Develop

or Challenge Forms and Conventions of Real media

Products?

Questionnaire

• To ensure that the product followed the correct codes and conventions, I devised a questionairre which would allow us to have better understanding of the Thriller genre.

• We used this to choose the age rating of our film as well as the setting, and and what to pay attention to.

• The result of the questionnaire suggested that the storyline is the most appealing to the viewers.

The Film contains several conventions that are seen in

action thrillers

• The heavy use of weapons - just in the first two minutes, there is a killing.

• Also the film contains mystery; the identity of the hooded figure is completely unknown to the viewer

• The film opening ends on a cliff hanger, wandering why James is killed, and who wanted him dead.

Jon and I looked at various action and thriller movie

openingsJon saw:• Inception• The Adjustment Bureau• The Dark Knight

• I watched• The dark Knight• Iron Man

How did your sequence match real movies.

• In the film I saw, the cameras were all in fixed positions and panned around.

• This is evident in the outdoor scenes, where we used a tripod.

• Some thriller films particularly those that swing more in the psychological sub genre, use handheld cameras, in which the shaking adds a sense of mystery.

• In the indoor scenes where James is confronted by Katherine handheld cameras are used, as the audience doesn’t know where James is going and why.

How Does your Media Product represent Particular Social

Groups? • With the film, we used some stereotypes.• Katherine for example is the “perfect” wife.

She worries about James, and wants him to stay safe. Her role adds emotion to the story, and makes the audience generally feel sorry for her and also worry for what will happen to her when she finds out that James dies.

• Also, James plays the role of the protagonist unwillingly, which happens in most action/thriller films including Neo in The Matrix, and John Mclaine in Die Hard.
