On a piece of paper, draw a graphic organizer like the one below and record the phrasal verbs.

Hurry Up ! = Move faster / quicker !

Hurry Up! We’re going to be late !

Listen Up ! = Be Quiet / Pay attention.(Polite)

Listen Up when I am talking to you !!Please pay closer attention !

Shut Up ! = Be Quiet (NOT polite)

“Take up” = Begin a new hobby. Learn something new.

I’m going to ‘take up’ a new hobby. What do you suggest ?

I’m going to ‘take up’ a new language. Which is harder ?Chinese ? Or Korean ? ?

“Make up your mind” = Make a decision. Decide. Choose. Make a choice.

Make up your mind ! I don’t care where we eat dinner, but I am hungry !

“Make up” stories = To create stories.

The Boy Who Cried ‘Wolf !’ is a tale of a boy who ‘made up’ false stories.

Make up = To apologize after a fight / argument.

You two stop fighting and make up to one another. Say you’re sorry !

Look (it) up = Research something on-line or in a book.

If you don’t know something, look it up in the dictionary or “Google it”.

Wake Up ! = Become aware.Pay attention. Take action. Do something!

If we don’t wake up soon,it will be too lateto save the planet from global warming.

What proverb is this ???

The early bird gets the worm.

“Warm up” = Prepare. Get ready (usually before exercise)

It’s a good idea to warm up before exercising, by stretching.

“Catch up” = To talk to someone you haven’t seen in awhile.

I have not seen you in so long ! Let’s ‘catch up’ soon, over coffee or lunch.

“Step up” = To take responsibility or leadership. To work harder.

If you are going to pass this course, you had better ‘step up’ and work harder.

“Brush up” = to re-learn skills you learned a long time ago, to ‘refresh your memory’

I need to ‘brush up’ on my Spanish before my trip to Mexico. I haven’t studied it since high school.
